Last updated:

Bowling, a sport where players score points by knocking down objects with a rolling ball, can be enjoyed by everyone irrespective of age or prior knowledge of the game. Traditional bowling is an indoor activity that can be played competitively or simply for recreation. Today, however, there are also bowling apps that can offer just as much fun and excitement, which you can download on computers and smartphones.

Bowling is a sport in which players roll a bowling ball down a long and narrow path towards a set of objects known as pins. Today the sport has become refined with state-of-the-art bowling facilities and bowling gaming apps virtually simulating the game. However, the game has evolved throughout history.

The original history of bowling can be traced back over 7000 years to Egypt. However, in the 1st and 4th centuries, the Romans and Germans played a game of knocking over objects with ball or stones. Gradually, this morphed into lawn bowling, which became popular across England and Germany in the 14th century.

By the 15th and 16th centuries, it had spread all over Europe and Asia as pin bowling. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, bowling had spread to the rest of the world. Even though variations of the game developed as it got to different countries, the American Bowling Congress finally established the rules for the Ten-Pin bowling in 1895. Today, even though the idea behind the sport has not changed, traditional bowling has improved through the course of history. With the rules of the game refined, bowling facilities such as bowling centers, the ball, and pins are also better improved.

Furthermore, in the 1970s, the game of bowling revolutionized into arcade bowling. The era of arcade games caused companies to design arcade bowling games. They were fashioned to simulate traditional bowling and were widely accepted quickly. You can still find them in restaurants, sports bars, and bowling alleys.

Today, however, arcade gaming has been replaced by computer and phone games. Individuals can now enjoy virtual bowling games on their smartphones without having to visit a bowling center. Players can also challenge others in tournaments and one-on-one competitions.

There are five different types of bowling games, and the most common is the Ten-Pin bowling game.

Ten-Pin Bowling

The Ten-Pin bowling game is more popular across the United States, where it is known as "bowling." The game uses large balls that have three finger holes. The ball size ranges from 6 lbs to 16 lbs. The game also includes ten equal-sized pins arranged into a triangle, called a frame. The pins are made of wood or plastic material, and each weighs between 3lbs, 6 oz, and 3lbs, 10 oz. They’re usually 15 inches tall and 4.7 inches wide.

Nine-Pin Bowling

The Nine-Pin bowling, also known as Kegel, is very popular across Europe. The ball used for this game doesn't have any finger holes, although there are balls with two holes for beginners to make learning easier. The game also involves rolling a ball down a long alley to knock down pins, but in this case, there are only nine pins set up.

Five-Pin Bowling

Five-Pin bowling is more common in Canada. It consists of five pins set up in a triangular formation, and it includes a hand-sized ball with no finger holes (Five-Pin bowling also has balls with a single thumb hole). The fewer number of pins and smaller balls make it easier to play.

Candlepin Bowling

This bowling game is popular in New England. The pins are thin and tall like candles and set up in ten frames. The game appears easy to play, but knocking the small pins over is quite challenging.

Duckpin

The Duckpin has the pin shape and rules of Ten-Pin while employing the light-weight of a candlepin ball.

One of the advantages of virtual bowling—the bowling game apps—is that some of the games offer different types of bowling. Players can select their preferred bowling type and enjoy the complete virtual bowling experience for free.

Each type of bowling game has its own set of rules. In 10-Pin bowling, the most popular variation, each bowler has two chances to knock over the pins with the bowling ball. If a player achieves 12 strikes in a single row, scoring the maximum point of 300, then only a single spin is needed.

The rules also hold for bowling game apps. However, apps that offer different types of bowling games are more flexible. The bowling game selected by the player determines the type of rule guiding each game.

Mobile phones can accommodate different kinds of applications ranging from instant messaging apps and photography apps to game apps, including those that use emulators. You can also play virtual bowling games on your Android or iOS smartphone app without having to play the sport in a physical bowling alley.

The best bowling game apps come with single-player, 2-player, and multiplayer features with quality 3D graphics and animations. They also host virtual online tournaments, allowing you to challenge different players around the world.

You will find that hitting virtual pins with virtual balls is just as thrilling as the traditional sport. Even for people who have never bowled, it is quite easy to learn. You can download a bowling app and start playing as a beginner. In a short while, you will be able to play the highest difficulty level.

When you're not taking selfies or chatting with friends on your smartphone, you can entertain yourself by playing bowling games. Our list of the best ten bowling games will give you an idea of where to start.

    • Frustrating at first until you slide your hand along the side of the phone to keep the ball straight with your finger. Now it's fun. Thanks

    • This game is amazingly awesome! Developers did a really great job making this. The only suggestion I have is to possibly create a "chat" feature, where you can show an emoji or show a word while the other person is playing to make it more fun and interactive, but other than that, super awesome game!

    • Love the real feel of lanes. The spin after you throw is too easy. The curve before doesn't really seem to work the way it should. And there are fewer game modes then I would like. I gave it 5 simply because the pins act like they do in real bowling.
