Your Smartphone is Your Companion

How many times have you checked your smartphone today? More than you can count? We can all agree that the device is such a helpful companion. Calls, texts, schedules, news, social media catch-ups, app discoveries, and the likes.

Your phone can notify you of severe weather situations. It has an inbuilt feature called the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The device draws signals from the nearest network mast or cell phone tower and you get emergency alerts in return. The warnings are specific for impending hazards expected to hit your location.

The WEA signals can be enabled for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flash floods. It also covers emergencies that might involve dust storms, and even AMBER alerts.

Like many cellphone notifications, WEAs work when you've activated them. So, check to be sure you haven't turned them off. Constant emergency alerts may come off to many phone users as intrusive. But they can be gems in alerting you about the next weather hazard.

Reports shared after a tornado in Georgia revealed eight persons sought refuge after getting weather alerts about an incoming storm. The monstrous storm ravaged their home and property, but no lives were lost.

This case demonstrates the power of acting timely on the information. The Wireless Emergency Alerts are accessible whether you use an Android or Apple iOS device. For iOS users, open the "Settings" app and locate "Notifications" to enable the emergency alerts.

Android users can also get weather alerts in Messages. Open the 'Messages" app to locate the settings and enable the alerts notification.

Weather Radios Are Still Great Accessories

It's good to rely on smart devices for all kinds of notifications. But their reception to service signals might not be very active during severe weather conditions. Weather radios are never old fashioned when it comes to weather alerts. Buying an NOAA weather radio is a proactive decision you'd be happy you made. You and your family would be well-informed before and when weather storms strike.

You can program a modern weather transistor radio to alert you ahead by entering your country's six-digit code. The receivers are effective in cases where your country has been added to a watch list due to an impending weather hazard.

There are more advanced weather alerts devices that allow you to customize the type of alerts you want to receive. But these functionalities don't mean radios don't experience shortcomings. In a 2011 tornado strike, the morning storms affected the signals of radio transmitters. The winds uprooted the weather radio transmitters. The tornadoes struck later, with many weather radios receiving zero alerts.

Regardless, weather radios make good backups to TVs and mobile phones. When it comes to safety, it's OK to have more than one back up.

The Local TV Channel

Nothing beats a good old TV in the business of breaking news. Internet connections may not always be efficient in severe weather. But your local TV channels would be there to feed you news updates nonstop. From weather emergencies to weather news and safety measures, the TV is well-rounded.

TV news does more than just report or weather alerts. Most take the weather news to another level. They show coverages of terrible thunderstorms, floods, weather hazards, and areas that need emergency units deployed.

TV stations invest a lot in getting the best news across to you. From expert meteorologists to weather forecasters, weather conditions are tracked regularly for reports. Of course, televisions aren't immune to signal disruptions and outages. But having the weather situation shared professionally is an excellent way to experience the news.

The proactive emergency tips and live weather reports still distinguish the TV from other options significantly.

FM Radios Still Exist

The transition of FM radio is fantastic. Not one technology has been able to overshadow its relevance. Going for a run with your phone? In your car or at home? You could open the radio app on your phone, or switch on your car radio if you’re on a trip.

FM radios are buzzing with many channels. But what you need is a station known for transmitting weather reports. In tornado emergencies, many weather radio stations are on standby. The transmission of live weather feed begins, and listeners can follow the weather situation.

Apps Are Miracles

It's great to have many backups, even when it comes to smart gadgets. Smartphones have become a big part of society. Subconsciously, we turn to them for everything. It's expected we look at our phones for the latest update. But we wouldn't need to always wait on WEAs. Apps can complement WEAs and deliver better severe weather notifications.

The best severe weather apps have an excellent interface and regular broadcast features that let you see weather reports daily. You'd never have to wait until it's too late. The experience feels a lot safer when you know you can track severe weather alerts no matter where you are. Following up weather on Android is an entirely refreshing and reassuring experience.

Apple users can also install apps that deliver insights and broadcasts on severe weather for iOS.

Severe weather can be dangerous and life-threatening. But one way to be assured of safety is to be prepared for it. Prepare yourself and your family with backup. Choose from our list of Best Severe Weather Alerts Apps.
