Medical Record Keeping Apps are a Valuable Resource

Medical Record Keeping

In the history of modern medicine, medical record keeping has been one of the most essential tools used to keep people healthy. A medical record is a comprehensive collection of notes and information created by doctors on a specific patient throughout his or her lifetime. These records contain any information from a patient's hospital and doctor visits, including any notable information that could be used to help the next doctor that sees the patient, whether it's years down the road or just a few months.

This isn't just a benefit for health care providers: it's a requirement. Laws are in place to ensure that all health care providers keep a record of every patient's visits to every doctor or hospital so that their information will always be on record for the next doctor. This information includes X-rays, any sort of test results, and any sort of treatments used. That way, future doctors of the patients will have an idea of what might work for certain conditions and what doesn't. They will also be able to fact check any patients on what kinds of medications they're taking.

Medical Record Importance

While medical record keeping seems like the obvious best practice for the overall health of a patient, it has a wide variety of benefits for the entire health care system and patients themselves. In order to be properly licensed and certified, each health care provider must keep proper records. This makes sure that patients get the proper care if they move or are required to switch doctors.

Even though doctors are still required to keep proper medical records, the most effective method of record-keeping is when the patients maintain their own medical records. These new personal health records, also known as PHRs, used to be kept through third parties. The records were kept safe on Internet databases and made available for a small fee. The major health administrative agencies such as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) support the third party holding the information to ensure its accuracy and security.

Medical Record Mobile Apps

Even though keeping medical records on third party websites was an effective and convenient method, the rising prevalence of smartphone use improved on the idea greatly. Mobile programmers began creating medical record mobile apps that allowed users to keep all of their medical records in one place ... a place they always carried with them on their person.

You see, third party websites had to be very careful about who accessed the medical record information on their clients so security was tight. Users would often forget their ID number or password, creating a headache for both them and the doctors trying to access the info. With a record-keeping mobile app on an iPhone or Android, you not only have quick, easy, and secure access to your files, they're stored in a location that you can actually work with. Sharing documents from a medical history app is a much easier task and allows for more sharing options than using an Internet site as storage.

Understanding Family History

Along with being able to easily access and share your medical records, these apps allow users to see into their past. Understanding your family's medical history is essential to living a healthy lifestyle in numerous ways, and medical record-keeping apps can give you access to your family's medical history with new convenience.

We've all been sitting in the doctor waiting for an appointment and filling out paperwork. It asks what medicine you're allergic to, if you've ever broken a bone, and if anyone in your family has had heart problems. You flashback to your last doctor visit when your mom told you to let them know about your Grandpa's pacemaker. Or was it your Grandma's? That unsure feeling when completing important information that your doctor will use for medical condition screenings isn't something you want to experience. Mobile medical record apps will help you keep track of the sheets you've filled out, and there are even ones that allow you to keep your own notes. So when your dad mentions something about how you have a family history of high blood pressure, you can write it down and stop the guessing games.

Sticking With a Comprehensive Health Plan

Along with keeping track of your own and your family's medical history, medical record mobile apps will also allow you to create and maintain a comprehensive personal health plan. While these apps provide other useful tools like a quick medical dictionary and contact info for the nearest health specialists, knowing how to sustain a healthy lifestyle is one of the most essential benefits to utilizing these apps.

From knowing the danger signs of high blood pressure to guidelines for healthy eating, medical record apps will allow you to track what doctors have told you - understand where your problem areas are and work toward a healthier you. If you have to manage diabetes or avoid addictive substances, your medical records will remind you of the best steps to take and what to watch out for. These apps aren't just a place to store files: they could be a key to living your best life.

While medical record keeping has been an important part of personal health for centuries, the latest in mobile app technology allows you to have a personal health assistant right on your phone.
