  3. Try Different Rangefinder Apps to See Which One Works
  4. Improve Your Swing by Using an App to Track Shot Statistics
  5. Check Out Other Apps to Improve Your Game

Golf is an intricate sport. The tiniest hitch in your swing causes the ball to hook left or right into the rough. However, like other sports,  the game of golf has seen significant improvements due to the advancement and application of technology. Now remembering to download a rangefinder before you head out for a day of golf is just as important as remembering your tees. The right rangefinder app in the hands of someone who knows how to use it is a dangerous ally.

Therefore, using a GPS rangefinder when practicing at a range or on the course will show your distance limits with each club in your bag. Once you know the limits of each club, you can start making better club choices as your game progresses, keeping you from taking an unnecessarily risky shot when it is achievable with a much easier club. If you want to use a rangefinder but are a little worried about the price, no worries. With mobile phones as powerful as they are, you don't even have to go out and buy and expensive laser rangefinder. In fact, some range finders are even available as free apps for your iPhone or Android.

Smartwatches have been a huge blessing for golfers and really any sports enthusiast. With an Apple watch, Android watch, or Garmin watch, there are hundreds of different GPS and other golf apps to help improve your game. The right GPS app can quickly tell you the distance to the hole with just a quick glance at your wrist, so you aren't always pulling out your phone in the middle of the course. Another feature you should be aware of when looking for a golf GPS apps is the ability to track your swings automatically.

So, not only will the right app automatically track your swings on each hole, but it will also store the swing number for each hole so that you can look back at it later. Reviewing your numbers is an excellent way to track improvement. With a quick glance at your history on different courses, you can see exactly which area of your game you need to work on. Maybe your midrange game was your weak point but according to the data, it really could be your driving, placing you in less than ideal positions for a midrange shot.

Now that you've started to play with a rangefinder app, don't restrict yourself by trying just one app. There are hundreds of options out there, so make sure to at least try a few different types. Apps like Skydroid offer satellite overviews or just about any courses, and the ability to map a course if no preexisting map exists. Skydriod, and apps like it, are a good choice if you are having trouble finding any maps for your home course.

Meanwhile, other apps offer voice command options, which can be beneficial to some or annoying to others. Then there are apps like Swingu that make it easy to not only track your swings but bets as well if you like to add a little extra pressure to the tee off. If you're looking for discounted green fees as well as a  range finder, then check out Vpar. Of course, there are hundreds of more apps like 18 birdies, hole 19, and Across just to name a few, so you get an idea of just how many rangefinder choices you have.

So, now that you have a stand alone range finder app you like, take advantage of the statistics these apps provide to improve your swing. Even a simple golf GPS app provides a plethora of information that can be used to up your game. Accurate statistics about your 3-putt greens let you know how your short game is looking and what shots you need to work on the most.

Also, look for a GPS app that tracks your "Stiff Chip" percentage. A pro golfer should almost never miss a putt within 3 feet of the hole. Most Garmin golf watches or other apps can track your stiff chip percentage and if it's not great, get yourself to the putting green.

Of course, answering the simple question of how far am I away from the hole can only improve your game so much. So, once you have selected a rangefinder app, take some time to look around at the other golf apps that can help you improve your score.

Some shot tracer apps will analyze every part of your swing. If you are looking to put in some hours, these apps are perfect. They range from free options offered via Huddle to apps where you can spend some money and have a professional golfer break down your swing. That's where they tell you precisely what you should work on, and that's all from your smartphone.

If you are looking for ways to get more tee times, golf apps have you covered. From discounted tee times to making reservations at the clubhouse, these apps can help you get out there and practice that much faster. After all, the only way to get better at golf ... is to golf.

Then, of course, some apps can help you score some cheaper golf gear. Unfortunately, there is an advantage to using nicer clubs, but those clubs can be costly.  Luckily, with the right golf gear app, you can keep your eye out for sales on some of the best big-name equipment or maybe get some gently used clubs that aren't quite the right fit for another golfer in your area.

Now that you are ready to start looking for a rangefinder app that you love, remember these five tips and your search will go smoothly. Check out the list below for some examples of what makes a good golf range finder if you're looking to save even more time.

    • This app has been exactly what I was looking for. A simple gps I can use on my Apple Watch while out on the course. The yardage has been accurate when checked against my rangefinder within +/- 3 yards every time I checked. Being able to select what club I just hit and track my shot is great for learning how far I actually hit each club out on the course. I haven’t paid much attention to the suggested club yet but once I get more shots saved on each club I’m sure that function will be handy. After one of the updates the app dropped off of my Apple Watch so I contacted the support team. Messaged back and forth several times and they reached out to the development team. Within a week of reaching out to them they had another update sent to the App Store and I now have the app back on my watch! My experience with their support team (Christi) was top notch.

    • This app is or pretty cool and very useful. It can replace taking notes on a scorecard as well as track important stats like fairways hit(even has option to Indicate direction ball was off the Fairway), greens hit, number of chip shots, and most important for myself personally is number of putts per hole. I knew that I needed to work on my putting but I had no idea how many strokes per round it was costing me. At least 17 per round, birdies putted into double bogeys, it’s very frustrating but gives you an idea of where you want to get some practice in. Overall cool app, download if you are serious about your game and enjoy using technology to learn how you can improve your scores.

    • I have used several apps and have not changed since finding this one 3 yrs ago. Does everything I need it to and always works well. My two pieces of feedback are these: 1) I admit I'm ashamed that I want this however, if you can chose to add penalties while keeping score you should have a summary in the statistics area. 2) I like the idea of having the ability to choose different scoring games but think it would be cool for there to be more option and how to play them. Often my golf buddy's and I are wanting to play a different game but alway settle on skins because we don't know where to look. Thanks for the great app and keep making improvements.

    • This is a very detailed and thoughtful tool to the recreational golfer that’s looking to step it up a bit. I started using this app 8 years ago. 1000 rounds later...I’m still using Golfshot. Thank you for helping this navy veteran navigate my way around the course and develop a bit of skill along the way!
