Coloring Books: 5 Benefits of Coloring for Adults

Stress Reduction & Mind Relaxation

Adults who already use coloring books say the activity has a calming but fun experience that helps them remain in touch with their creative sides. As a result, more grown-ups are starting to pick up on what used to be called a ‘childish’ fancy.

For starters, it would help not to confuse coloring with expert art therapy services. The reason is that such service involves a client conferring with a qualified therapist.

That said, we affirm that coloring is one way to show yourself that you care about you. It gets even better when you take part in this exercise as a group, the benefits can be profound.

One of the benefits of coloring is its ability to ease the amygdala — the portion of the brain responsible for your fight or flight response. This action puts your mind to rest and relieves you of all pent-up pressure.

However, even though this appears to be a very recent discovery, the idea itself dates back to the early 1900s when modern psychologist Carl Jung recommended coloring mandalas as a form of therapeutic tool. Decades after, his methods are still being prescribed to PTSD patients.

After a long, stressful day of work, coloring is the right activity to ease you of stress and refresh your mind, readying you to take on the next day with renewed vigor.

Sharpen Your Creativity

Coloring frees your brain to boost and express your creativity. Researchers have found that trying out different strokes and color combinations activate portions of the brain that are necessary for innovative and creative ideas. With each stroke and pattern, you can create something on a coloring book that you might otherwise not have imagined possible.

If your day job is a form of art — such as content writing, graphic design, and others that require your creative juice to keep flowing all day, there are days when you feel too drained to create anything. On such days, the freedom of artistic expression that comes with coloring could be the panacea you need.

Ward Off Negative Thoughts

The world today is filled with feelings of anxiety, worry, and fear. There’s an onslaught of negative thoughts with the general populace worrying about one thing or the other. Coloring can help the world be right again.

Are you afraid or anxious about anything? Coloring can efficiently rid your mind of negativity and replace it with a more favorable pattern of thinking. The process of coloring involves creating mental pictures of the image you’re trying to color by complete concentration on the images in your mind. The full focus slowly begins to replace the negative thoughts. The more you focus on these mental pictures, the clearer your mind becomes. Positive emotions, such as the joys of coloring, also begin to replace all the feelings of fear, hatred, and other negative emotions.

According to Neuropsychologist, Dr. Stan Rodski, engaging in adult coloring, has tangible neurological effects. It’s for this reason adult coloring books are becoming more popular.

A Form of Meditation

Meditation is a powerful tool. You can only achieve a real sense of self when you regularly attain the inner calm that comes with meditating.

Coloring induces a state of calm that is very similar to the feeling you get when you meditate. As you color, your mind slowly begins to let go of all worries and thoughts to focus on your strokes and the image you’re trying to create.

As you gradually sink into this state, you arrive at a more relaxed state of mind, a state when all the usual chatter is silent, and all you have is your clear mind and the coloring. Creating art through coloring helps you declutter your mind, and you can enjoy the silence. Sometimes, in that silence, you can connect with your inner self and get answers to your questions.

Relaxation & Fun

Coloring is simple. It’s an art that should be enjoyed by all. Just like comics, it is not for children alone. Besides its mental health benefits, it can be fun for adults too. However, many adults can’t remember what it means to have fun. When was the last time you relaxed and enjoyed yourself as much as you did when you were a kid? Can you remember the last time you flipped through a kids’ comic or laughed at a funny meme?

Many people have forgotten what it means to do things just for fun; however, coloring can be a way to have all the fun and excitement again. It can bring back many happy memories of your childhood, and you can have unlimited fun while at it.

Coloring is an art for all. You don’t have to be an artist, nor do you have to be a child to enjoy it. Check out our best coloring book apps to start enjoying all its therapeutic benefits.
