The 411 from our Appventurer
How we tested?
Dealing with passwords is serious business. You wouldn't want to let a hacker wreak havoc on your portable device any more than you'd want a burglar in your home. This is why we approached this task with utmost dedication.
The quality of the encryption is, of course, a primary concern whenever you decide to focus on passwords. The better it is, the better the app will fare on our list.
A top-notch password generator is another essential piece of the puzzle. If the app doesn't perform in this department, we won't even consider it in any shape or form. Secure autofill features are just as important.
In addition, we also paid attention to any extra features, the overall functionality, and performance, as well as the price points of each individual piece of software.
Why get the app?
Some people will treat their passwords rather casually and then be left in a state of utter shock when something bad happens to their personal information. This is simply not the way to go. Today, the safety and security of your data are at a premium. Malicious attacks can and do occur. Don't take this situation lightly. A password manager is an important part of your digital arsenal.
There is, however, another reason why you might want to consider using such an app. Ask yourself - do you honestly remember each of the seventeen different passwords you use? Chances are, no one does. Obviously, you wouldn't want to get locked out of your Facebook account or favorite game. That's why it's better to keep all the most important passwords at your fingertips - especially if one of your devices decides to break down for no reason whatsoever.
More About Keeper Password Manager: Our Pick
More people are connected to the internet than ever before. The number is only likely to grow. This brings with it multiple benefits but also substantial risks. The question of security is an important one, especially today when malware, adware, ransomware, and all other kinds of malicious code are just floating around, waiting to destroy your device. If you're genuinely serious about protecting your digital possessions, a robust system is an absolute must.
The name of Keeper Password Manager has long been mentioned as one of the best solutions out there. Many people have touted it as the most comprehensive piece of software to hit the market in recent years. This sort of hype, however, always raises a tiny bit of suspicion. As a team that has dealt with apps in great detail, we have an eye for flaws - and some pretty exacting standards.
Fortunately enough, Keeper Password Manager has somehow managed to work its way into our hearts - and our smartphones. This platform lets you sync and manage all your passwords - across all devices. No lag, no glitches, no mishaps - nothing but smooth sailing. It literally stretches over phones, tablets, and desktop devices, giving you full control of the process.
Cyber threats are sure to be drastically diminished with this system in place. Touch ID and Face ID are a good way to make your (already heavily encrypted) password vault extra secure. You can store unlimited information, generate strong passwords, and even share files with people you trust.
Each option, each segment, each section is arranged in such a way so that access to it is perfectly intuitive. Navigating through the pages of this app is likely to become second nature in a matter of hours. It's been a while since we had the pleasure of using such a simple yet effective set of tools.
The autofill feature is nothing to sneeze at either and will save you a good deal of time when filling out endless forms on the internet.
One thing that sets Keeper Password Manager from all other apps we have tested is its unique mechanism that enables the user to know when (or if) their passwords have been jeopardized. The program goes so far as to trawl the depths of the DarkWeb in search of such security breaches. If someone has hacked into any of your accounts - you will be the first to know.
You can also take advantage of a great family password manager plan, as well as select up to 5 trusted individuals to serve as a safety net in case something goes wrong. The chances for this, however, seem pretty slim as Keeper Password Manager is about as secure as it gets.
Snags but not drags:
Obviously, an app as good as this is pretty much bound to come at a price. The trial period is free but, for full functionality, a bit of an investment is needed. The good news is, this software won't leave you penniless. In fact, it is a lot more affordable than the other contenders in its niche. A personal plan will cost a mere $2.99 a month, while the family pack will set your household back $6.99 per month - when billed annually. For this sort of app, it is well worth it.
Another snag we might want to mention is the face scan feature. It is a great idea that, for now, lacks the stellar performance of the rest of the platform. In short, it takes a bit of time to get things right. The feature won't necessarily work in less than ideal light conditions, and you may need to have a bit of patience in order to get things done.
More About 1Password: Runner Up
Some apps take the world by storm, appearing out of nowhere and positioning themselves pretty well from the get-go. Others build their reputation slowly, allowing their user base to grow over a span of several years. 1Password has been around for a while, slowly but steadily climbing all the way to the top. Today, it is one of the most recognizable names in the niche - for a reason.
Bringing together simplicity and security, this app doesn't pretend to be something that it isn't. Instead, it brings its best foot forward, making sure that it does not make any promises it can't keep. The ones that it does make, however, it sticks to through and through.
The procedure is simple enough - you just add your passwords and let the app do its job. In case you need a new code, you can always use 1Password's powerful generator to come up with a genuinely strong pass for any website or service you wish to be a member of. You can easily store all this info on one device - or spread it across numerous platforms.
Despite its simple interface, 1Password doesn't focus on just one thing. Instead, it can also be trusted with your personal documents, financial info, or indeed any type of files you would like to keep under lock and key. Heavens knows the internet is not exactly a safe place.
Just like our winner, this program gives you a chance to add trusted people to your network - someone you can contact in case you get locked out of your Facebook profile or bank account. For added security, there's also the Fingertip unlock.
Another reason why this particular app made it to the top 3 is the sheer volume of data it is able to store. Just in case you don't get lost, it also has a thorough search function that enables you to browse all your stored digital items within seconds. You will be able to find just what you need - each and every time.
Last but not least, we should mention the deal with payments. Yes, that is the only downside to this story - the fact that after a 14-day free trial - you will need to subscribe in order to continue reaping the benefits of this cool password vault. Fortunately, the price is only $2.99, billed yearly, so you might as well consider this sort of arrangement. Even if 1Password does offer fewer options than our winner, it is still an app that covers all the needs of the average smartphone user.
More About mSecure: Also Groovy
Let's face it - our list wouldn't be complete without mSecure. Unlike 1Password, this app hasn't been around for long. Still, in a comparatively short period of time, it has managed to garner such a remarkable amount of praise - we simply had to pay attention. Believe it or not, this is the one to turn to if you want things done properly. Sensitive information will be shielded the way it ought to.
Behind a rather simple and unremarkable interface lies a true beast, quietly purring yet ready to pounce each time a threat rears its ugly head. The app boasts a unique model of protection. In addition to traditional measures, it introduces the industry-standard AES encryption into the mix, making sure that your precious information is kept safe and secure. The developers definitely didn't want to take any chances.
You have the master password, pass generator, fingerprint scanner, etc. - all packed into a pretty small piece of software - but that's not all. This app also has a strong auto-fill system that allows for the use of no less than 20 different templates. In case that's not enough - try making your own, for that is something that the software will also support.
Another innovation we should mention is intelligent sorting, filtering, and grouping of all information - better than that found in most other apps. With it, it will be practically impossible to lose track of your info. An added bonus is a password analyzer which will go through all your logins and pick out those that are too week and/or in need of an update.
Unlike many security apps, mSecure can be used free of charge. Of course, some functionality will be limited, but it will still cover the basic needs of just about anyone. The pro version does come with a price tag, but, fortunately, you can test it for an entire month - for free - so that you will definitely know what you're getting yourself into if you decide to purchase. No need to commit to a subscription because a one-time buy will keep you covered forever. Whichever path you choose - you can rest assured that this amazing new app will do a great job of keeping your passwords safe.
Other Apps Considered
We'll be perfectly frank - this is a pretty cool app, to begin with. Everything runs smoothly, as it should - until you get to the multi-factor authentication, that is. This part of the program will sometimes work - at others refusing to budge an inch. This is, in our book, a major red flag. Being locked out of a single website is one thing, being locked out of your password manager another altogether. Not a pickle we'd want to get ourselves into.
This app aims to serve as a password vault and an autofill plugin. It covers passwords, payments, and personal details, and a number of other features. It is quick and responsive and even boasts a VPN service. The latter, however, is where the platform fails in a rather spectacular fashion. Instead of keeping up with the high quality of other segments, the VPN bit is surprisingly glitchy and won't keep you connected for more than three minutes at a time. If only the developers had refrained from venturing into unchartered waters, things would've been so much better. As it is, the app feels incomplete and potentially problematic.
This platform promises to keep everything synced between all of your devices. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite deliver, especially since it will often have trouble connecting. Navigation is another issue. It is deeply counterintuitive and straight-up difficult to deal with. Frankly, we were not in the mood to waste half an hour of our time trying to do something that, with any other piece of software, would take about five minutes. Getting lost in the obscure corridors of Bitwarden's interface is not our idea of a good time.
Managing passwords like a boss, this app is comparatively easy to use. In fact, it is one of the simpler we had the pleasure of testing this time around. So simple, in fact, that it has left us wanting just a tiny bit more. It seems to lack some of the features that other platforms have by default. It's lightweight yet somehow still manages to be a tad slow. Despite a very promising start, we ended up uninstalling it after only half an hour.
Known for its excellent VPN software, Nord has quite a reputation to live up to. We had some pretty high expectations going into this, only to get out of it ever so slightly disappointed. The app offers decent but ultimately mediocre performance. To top all that, there is an obvious nudge and push to pay for the premium version - something that persists throughout the use of the platform. While we do understand that this is necessary to keep the service afloat, it can sometimes turn into a solid source of annoyance. In addition, the app is Android-only, a limitation that doesn't sit too well with us. Overall, we'd rather go for any of our top three.
RoboForm works as a stand-alone app as well as a Chrome plugin. It is a solid piece of code that, however, will only work on more up-to-date devices. You can basically give up on this one immediately if your phone is not running either Android 8 or any of the later versions. This should be fine for most users but, unfortunately, that is not where the story ends. The app is surprisingly demanding and will hog up a good chunk of your device's memory. It can easily slow everything down to a crawl. This is pretty awkward, especially since most password managers should ideally be imperceptible and work in the background. We would rather opt for something more discreet.
Some apps specialize rather narrowly while others attempt to cover a good deal of ground. SecureSafe falls into the latter category. From passwords to credit card details and e-banking codes - even acting as a file safe - it casts a pretty wide net. Too wide, perhaps. Some features are more robust than others, with autofill straight-up refusing to work. We tested this on not just one but two different devices and the problem persisted throughout. This is not a good sign and is the main reason why the app remains confined to our "honorable mentions".
Stefan Racic
My phone tends to be filled to the brim with apps I am either trying on for size of using on a regular basis. I use them for a variety of tasks, including sketching and creating art, keeping in touch with friends, being up to date with the latest news, learning about diverse spiritual practices and, of course, playing games!
With over 10 years of experience as a translator and writer, I channel my creativity into writing about things I enjoy. My education in business (I hold a bachelor's degree in operations management) is but one part of expertise. I have worked for art magazines, spiritual blogs, news and business sites, and now I explore the fascinating world of apps.
My previous work is as diverse as my interests. Fresh out of college, I was employed as a translator and interpreter at the fringes of the corporate world and the NGO sector. After switching to writing, I first focused on business news, then shifted to working for a series of art magazines (WideWalls perhaps being the most well known), and even wrote content for a couple of spirituality-focused apps for Labyrinthos Academy. Little did I know that I would eventually devote a good chunk of my time to writing about all sorts of interesting new apps out there.
