The 411 from our Appventurer
How we tested?
Many of the apps claimed to have huge libraries of comics available, so I tested this by searching for a range of different comics to see which ones they had.
Where possible, I downloaded the comics onto my phone for offline viewing, and I paid attention to how easy that process was. For example, with some apps, you had to pay for additional chapters, whereas with others, you had to pay a monthly fee, but then you could read as much as you wanted.
Finally, I also scored each app on how well the digital comics stacked up with their physical counterparts when it came to the artwork. That’s a huge part of reading a physical comic, and I wanted to have an equally enjoyable experience.
With all this in mind, I reviewed all the apps and decided on my top 3.
Why get the app?
You can explore new and popular titles or get some classics from the archives, and if you’re a purist, it also gives you a way to read a comic, over and over, without worrying about scuff marks, page tears, or any wear and tear.
More About Marvel Unlimited: Our Pick
When you first open up the app, you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store as the fantastic visuals immediately jump out at you, and you’re faced with so much choice.
However, if you’re not too sure, you’ll be happy to know that everything is neatly categorized for you. Meaning you can view comics by their series, characters, creators, or even by a specific event such as the “Age of Ultron” or the “Inhumans Vs. X-Men”
As you begin to read, you’ll be blown away by the quality. The artwork is fantastic, as you’d expect, and it’s clear they’ve put a lot of effort into the app, but what we felt was the standout feature was how you scroll through each page. It’s perfectly optimized for mobile, and while some of the apps we tested required you to zoom in to read each section, Marvel makes it as easy as possible.
Snags but not drags:
We get it, that they’re trying to serve their traditional audience first, and they probably want to keep handheld comics alive (something we don’t think will ever die). Still, as an app user, I’d love the ability to catch up on my favorite series the moment it comes out.
More About Shonen Jump: Runner Up
You’ll be able to find classic comics, as well as the newer popular releases, and with the ability to store 100 chapters at a time on your device, it’s perfect for scrolling through an entire series or viewing when you’re not online.
When you open the app, you are presented with a variety of options, and you’ll be able to find a comic to read in seconds. They’re handy categories waiting for you, such as the ability to jump into a new series or explore new volumes. There’s also a search feature that allows you to look for a particular comic while also telling you how many chapters and volumes each comic has.
Once you find a comic that you’re ready to start reading, you’ll be blown away by the artwork. Each page is full of expressive, attention-grabbing designs and images that display a thousand thoughts and emotions in one snapshot, and you’ll quickly find yourself exploring each page instead of simply skipping through.
There are a few small things we’d like to see improved with this app, such as the ability to bookmark certain sections or the ease with which you can start a new chapter. Still, to be honest, that’s a very small price to pay for such incredible content at a ridiculously low price.
More About Crunchyroll: Also Groovy
There are over 1000 different anime shows and 30,000 episodes to choose from, including popular titles like My Hero Academia, One-Punch Man, and Attack on Titan, so you’ll always have something new and interesting to watch.
However, to get access to online viewing, extra streaming capabilities, or some of the other benefits and discounts, you will need to get the MegaFan membership, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Something that many fans will be wondering about is whether or not the shows are dubbed. In our test, we found that most of the shows are subtitles only, although some are dubbed, and it will indicate that when you find the show.
The app is great and nicely arranged, and everything you need is easily accessible.
The graphics and animation of each show are nothing short of great, and they do a fantastic job of bringing each show to life.
Other Apps Considered
Great app that almost cracked our top 3. It has a fantastic selection of stories and incredible artwork on each of its comics. There’s a wide variety of titles to choose from, including fan favorites such as “Under the Oak Tree.” For only $2.99 a month, Manta is a fantastic app.
The artwork and design of each comic is breathtaking, and they had a great selection. However, if there were one fault, it would be that at times we did find some comics hard to read due to how they’re presented.
The artwork, design, and available comics are all great. However, we found the app very messy and hard to read, which isn’t what you want when trying to locate your favorite comics. We also didn’t like how you had to buy coins to read certain comics and felt that was a hidden way of making you pay more. We’d much rather pay a set monthly fee to be able to get unlimited access.
Another app with great comics, fantastic artwork, and incredible design, but unfortunately, it’s also another app that we feel missed the mark with pricing. You have to buy coins to access certain chapters, which we feel is an underhand way of getting you to pay more money. We’d much rather pay a monthly fee so that we can read what we want when we want.

As a freelancer, I use all types of different apps so that I can manage my time and remain organized with ease. I’m always on the go so I love anything that can help me to stay on top of my tasks but for fun, I love playing games or watching movies.
I’m a huge sports fan so I’ll usually be checking the latest scores or following up on my teams and I also like to expand my mind with audiobooks and podcasts. Using apps allows me to get through so much more in a typical day that I simply wouldn’t be able to cover otherwise and I love it.
Being able to write about apps is pretty great as I get to research the best apps out there and find the hidden gems that people may not know about then share that information to help others discover their new favorite apps.
