Best Apps for Your Remote Side Hustle: The Bottom Line
Working from home has plenty of perks. If you're looking for a side hustle that will boost your budget, you've come to the right place. We tested the best apps for the job.

Introduction
Have you lost your job due to COVID-19? Looking for work to pay your college tuition? Fortunately, finding a side gig has never been easier. There are plenty of apps offering thousands of ads. Sometimes, the sheer scope of possibilities can seem overwhelming. Are all the ads legit? How much can you hope to earn? We have decided to test the most famous apps in order to determine which are the best in the business, landing on Upwork as our top choice for their extensive gig offerings.
Just as we expected
Why we chose Upwork:
- Enormous selection of remote gigs that will fit just about anyone's skillset

- 1,086 mobile game developer jobs and as many as 11,894 gigs related to WordPress design
- Many ways to customize your profile in fine detail or even create multiple "storefronts" for different clients
- Everything can be done through the app and there is practically no need to visit the website
- You can securely control your funds and withdraw payments
- The app is perhaps a bit slow but still extremely useful.
An extremely strong second
Why we chose Fiverr:

The 411 from our Appventurer
How we tested?
Naturally, ease of use came next. A user-friendly interface will always set a top-notch service apart from its less-than-perfect counterparts. Design, speed, and ways to browse were also among our top priorities. We also made sure that all the vital functions were accessible through the smartphone version - without the need to reach for the website on your desktop. Of course, we couldn't wrap this up without checking how safe and secure money withdrawals are.
Why get the app?
The main reason Upwork stood out from all its competitors was the sheer number of jobs available to any eager freelancer. With thousands of opportunities waiting in each and every category, it is bound to satisfy the needs of everyone looking to earn some extra cash. Of course, functionality, design, and ease of use were just as important but they would've been useless if it wasn't for the fact that the online service is filled to the brim with credible ads. Luckily, it is not the only place to go to, with Fiverr and Glassdoor performing almost as well. Each offered unique features and a substantial selection of adverts. If you have enough time, we urge you to explore all three. Still, Upwork managed to snatch the top spot, making it the go-to place for finding extra work for students and seasoned professionals alike.
More About Upwork: Our Pick
New adverts are posted practically every minute. You can easily manage both old and new proposals, make and accept offers - begin working on a project and bring it to completion - all from your smartphone or tablet. There is literally no need to visit the (otherwise amazing) website at any point in the process. Everything can be done on the go. Edit and customize your resume, manage, and withdraw money - all in a perfectly secure environment free from risks of external intrusion.
Speaking of money, you might want to bear in mind that Upwork will take a percentage of your earnings. For every new client, they will take 20% until you reach the $500 mark, then move down to 10% until you hit $10,000 and, past that number, stick to a mere 5%. The rates are comparable to nearly all other similar platforms and, while not ideal, are definitely compensated through the sheer volume of gigs available to any freelancer willing to put in the work.
In order to land the best gigs, you will have to create an enticing profile. Showcasing all your best work is essential, especially in categories in which a portfolio is a must. Still, what happens if you specialize in more than one niche? What if you are good at writing as well as web design? There's an easy solution for that. Upwork enables you to create multiple "storefronts", so to speak, and present different skill sets to prospective clients in such a way that you're never seen as a Jack-of-all-trades. Instead, you can have one profile that depicts you as a skilled WordPress wizard, and another that will show you like the veritable wordsmith that you are.
Snags but not drags:
Fortunately, the software never froze nor crashed so none of our work or careful searches were ever lost. Ultimately, a bit of lag is a fair price to pay for the opportunity to snatch a genuinely great remote gig.
More About Fiverr: Runner Up
Almost as famous as Upwork, in the last few years Fiver has managed to position itself as THE place to find a quick gig. Potential earnings do stretch well beyond the initial $5 mark and even the most experienced code wizard will be able to find something worth their while. Of course, those just starting their journey are not forgotten either and someone possessing a somewhat slim set of digital skills will still get to earn some cash.
Overall, Fiverr presents the eager freelancer with a considerable number of ads, albeit somewhat lower than Upwork. We encountered 1,049 mobile app creator gigs and 8,004 jobs concerning WordPress. What surprised us the most and propelled the app to our favorite top three in an instant was the sheer number of categories we were able to choose from. It ranged from web design and copywriting to 3D-modeling as well as more surprising gigs in real estate. You can even find a job as a tarot reader with 102 gigs just waiting for you. This really goes to show that the app covers just about any category you can possibly think of.
You can refine your search, filter by price range, employer level, and experience on the platform. You may also choose specific details of the contract that suit you and use that as your main browsing criteria. The possibilities are practically endless and you can always play by your strengths - whether you have a diverse and robust skillset, or are just a novice in the field.
Still, we were unable to give it the top prize for one specific reason. The platform remains a challenging one due to the fact that it is not very easy to establish yourself and gain the attention of clients. The algorithm favors those with previous experience and can easily bury your profile in a sea of others. You will need to spend a lot of time building your reputation. Note that taking too many low-cost gigs can hurt it. Of course, the situation is far from hopeless and, with a bit of dedication, you can overcome all the obstacles and become a top paid professional. Don't be discouraged and take this initial friction as a test of your commitment. It will be amply rewarded.
More About Glassdoor: Also Groovy
This is a robust and thorough mechanism that positions Glassdoor into a league of its own. It is useful both for ambitious young individuals fresh out of college as well as more mature workers looking to switch careers later in life. It prepares you for the big day and lets you know what to expect. You can even use the app to get ready for an interview and really ace each and every question. What more could you ask for?
Uploading and adapting your CV as well as profile preferences is, for the most part, a simple task. You can focus on a specific region or cast your net globally. Keeping an eye on individual companies is also an option that is made even easier once you turn on alerts and notifications. At the moment, the number of jobs is equally divided between traditional and remote work, although, chances are that in the near future the pendulum may swing in favor of the latter.
Perhaps the most obvious downside to Glassdoor is its slightly lower number of remote gigs compared to the other two top contenders. The digits are constantly growing but months or even a year will pass before it approaches anything close to Upwork. However, it still remains an excellent choice, especially for those who take their career very seriously and are determined to climb the corporate ladder.
Other Apps Considered
It took a good deal of testing to determine whether Indeed or Glassdoor would make it to the finals. It was definitely a close call. Indeed is a very good app with a huge selection of ads and a straightforward, no-frills design. Still, the way of applying for jobs seems a bit antiquated and the clunky process made us feel as if we were dealing with a website made in 1999 instead of modern-day software. In addition, the app is heavily focused on applicants from the US and UK, leaving the rest of the world without the right number of opportunities. If you're eager to go in deep, don't skip it. Still, it definitely wasn't our favorite.
Freelancer makes an effort to gather everyone from translators to legal professionals, as well as those specializing in economics and design. A large number of jobs are offered on a daily basis and these may as well be worth looking into. However, a fair warning is in order. During testing, we have faced a number of technical glitches. We tried to contact customer support but it took them three whole days to come up with an answer. This left a somewhat lackluster impression.
This app offers a diverse range of hourly gigs - both online and offline. However, it seems to be more focused on the latter, giving us only a small number of jobs we were focusing on. Finding a remote side hustle won't be easy with Instawork. Instead, it is the place to go for delivery drivers, people working in hospitality, and medical staff. Still, all of these will require you to get out of the house which is not ideal if your main goal is to stay away from COVID-19.
The platform is extremely easy to search and is enhanced with a number of added features, including note-taking, browsing by geographic location, salary-range, etc. Still, when it comes to actual gigs, the results are somewhat similar to Instawork. This large online employment marketplace simply focuses more on traditional positions, offering very few opportunities for students and freelancers to work from home.
Surprisingly enough, this platform was more than obviously inspired by Tinder. In order to start your search, you have to create a succinct yet eye-catching profile and - start swiping right to apply. In addition to this interesting and unique approach, there is also a robust search engine where you can filter the role or position you are aiming to get. Still, the results are not particularly refined and it can take quite a bit of time to dig up what you're looking for. Despite this, it is a pretty decent platform with loads of opportunities for remote and part-time work.
One to keep an eye on, even if we consider some of its minor flaws. It offers the user an excellent and very transparent way of tracking all the money earned. It makes it so much easier to understand the income as well as potential expenses. Simple navigation and a sleek design are its main selling points. It even has a telehealth option - in case the stress at work gets a bit too intense. It may be important to note that this is an app of more recent date and, at the moment, offers fewer jobs than some established names on the market. In a few years, it could easily turn into serious competition for Upwork and Glassdoor. For now, it remains very cool but not much more.
The one thing that sets this app apart from all others is an extremely fast way to set up an account. It's a good place to find work as holiday staff, a babysitter, or for teen workers looking to augment their pocket-money. When it comes to remote work, however, JobGet follows Ziprecruiter and Instawork, favoring traditional gigs over their more modern alternatives. Ultimately, the quality of this platform depends on what you're after. It is definitely a good choice for a younger crowd but experienced developers and web designers ought to look elsewhere.

WriterMy phone tends to be filled to the brim with apps I am either trying on for size of using on a regular basis. I use them for a variety of tasks, including sketching and creating art, keeping in touch with friends, being up to date with the latest news, learning about diverse spiritual practices and, of course, playing games!
With over 10 years of experience as a translator and writer, I channel my creativity into writing about things I enjoy. My education in business (I hold a bachelor's degree in operations management) is but one part of expertise. I have worked for art magazines, spiritual blogs, news and business sites, and now I explore the fascinating world of apps.
My previous work is as diverse as my interests. Fresh out of college, I was employed as a translator and interpreter at the fringes of the corporate world and the NGO sector. After switching to writing, I first focused on business news, then shifted to working for a series of art magazines (WideWalls perhaps being the most well known), and even wrote content for a couple of spirituality-focused apps for Labyrinthos Academy. Little did I know that I would eventually devote a good chunk of my time to writing about all sorts of interesting new apps out there.
