Want to sell your clothes but don't want to spend a lot of time creating listings? ThredUP is the app for you.
Why we chose thredUP:
- Sell and donate your clothes in one step — ThredUP is the simplest of all the apps we tested. They send you a bag, you fill it with clothes and accessories you don’t want anymore and send it in. They sell what they can and donate the rest (or return to you for a fee if you prefer)
- You don't have to worry about listing items, shipping, or communicating with buyers. ThredUP takes care of everything for you, including setting prices, although you can change the price if you want
- Items are sold on consignment and are listed 30-90 days. You are paid when they sell
- For a wardrobe refresh, opt for shopping credit instead of a cash payout to earn a little more
- Your payout is likely to be lower than other apps, but it also takes much less time and effort
If you’re focused on decluttering more than earning money, consider ThredUP.
Best Local Marketplace
Psst ... you may not have to download a new app to sell your stuff online. If you're on Facebook, you're on Facebook Marketplace.
Why we chose Facebook Marketplace.
- Built right into the Facebook app, Marketplace lets you list anything from cars to knickknacks and sell them right in your neighborhood. Or ship to buyers around the world
- App offers lots of tips for creating postings and meeting safely with buyers
- Because Facebook doesn’t handle the transaction, they don’t take a fee
- As with all things Facebook, the actual quality is less important than the fact that so many of people use it. Marketplace has lots of users and that means lots of potential buyers
Best High-End Fashion App
Fashionistas and shopping mavens will appreciate the chance to get good prices for their luxury brands — as well as browsing for deals.
Why we chose Tradesy:
- Tradesy specializes in high-end clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and wedding items. If you have these, you can make good money on the site
- Clear and detailed process for listing items. They ask for precise photos (item from the front, back, label, any flaws)
- Smart Pricing feature allows you to maximize your earnings without letting your items sit on the app for too long
- Multiple shipping options accommodate most users
- For items under $50, they take a flat commission fee of $7.50. For items more expensive than $50, they take 19.8%. The commission is very high, but if you have luxury items to sell, Tradesy users are willing to pay higher prices than other sites, so you stand to make more money here
If you have a closet full of high-end clothes that you want to swap out for this season's trends, check out Tradesy.

The 411 from our Appventurer
How we tested?
I made a draft listing on each app to see how the process went. The ideal was a simple process that also allowed for customization. I was also on the lookout for any helpful guidance the app provided to help make the process easier and more profitable.
The buying side of the app was also important since listed items are sold in the app’s marketplace (in most cases). So I browsed through the shopping parts of the app as well, looking at how well-organized they were, what prices were like, etc.
Here at Appgrooves, we’re focused on value. When it comes to apps for selling stuff, that can have a lot of different meanings, depending on your priorities and what you have to sell. So I included apps that prioritize earnings (of both high-end and regular items), as well as apps that are focused on selling quickly and easily, even if the payouts are not as high.
Why get the app?
Communicating with buyers is likely to be easier from your phone because you always have it with you, so you can respond quickly. And, since many buyers will be shopping from their phones, it helps to be able to see what they will see when they view your listing.
More About Mercari: Our Pick
I don't know about you, but I have no idea how much my stuff is worth. I'm talking about the little things. The t-shirts I don't wear anymore, the old cell phone, the books I don't want to read again. All the things that are no longer valuable to me but may be to someone else. Mercari solves that problem.
The seller experience on Mercari is designed to help users earn as much money as possible. While it's easy to list whatever items you want to sell, you can also opt to go through a set of questions asking if you have popular items. These include high-value items like phones and sneakers and cheaper items like t-shirts. If you have an item, tap yes, and the app adds up the average that your items sell for to give you a sense of how much you can earn. This process gives you a good sense of what sells best on Mercari and may give you some new ideas of what to sell.
The listing process is quick and easy. You post up to 12 pictures of your item, describe it in your own words and select options for category, brand, condition, and more, then set your price and shipping preference. Based on your price, the app will calculate your selling and processing fee right there and let you know how much you’ll earn. That means no surprises at payout time.
For sellers who want to earn more and enjoy goal-setting, Mercari offers a helpful tool. Just set your earnings goal, and Mercari will help you track your progress, providing selling tips along the way. This is a great motivational tool to help keep you on track, whether your goal is earning more or decluttering. Of course, the selling experience is only half of the equation. If the marketplace for shoppers isn't good, it will be harder to sell your items. Fortunately, the shopping experience on Mercari is excellent for both searchers and browsers. Popular categories are clearly displayed, and you can search for specific products easily. There are deals to be found, but the prices aren’t necessarily bargain basement. And that means that sellers can make good money here.
Snags but not drags:
Mercari is great for selling items that fall outside of major categories. But if you want to sell something from a major niche, you may want to check out an app specializing in that area. For instance, apps that are focused on fashion may showcase your clothes and accessories better and attract shoppers prepared to pay more.
Mercari's prepaid shipping label only covers items under 150 lbs. While you can choose to ship on your own, it might be more cost-efficient to sell larger items on a local marketplace app, so you can arrange pickup with someone in your area and not worry about shipping.
That said, Mercari offers an exceptional experience for sellers and buyers, and if you're looking for a one-stop marketplace app, this is the one I recommend.
More About thredUP: Runner Up
Gather round my fellow lazy and busy people, and let me tell you about ThredUP. If your closet is overflowing, but you don't have the time, energy, or desire to spend a lot of time pricing, listing, and shipping each item, get thee to your device's app store and download ThredUP. With the tap of a button, you can order a free "clean out kit" and take care of your closet in a single afternoon.
While on other sites, you handle listing, communication, and shipping for each item, (as well as figuring out what to do with unsellable items); with ThredUP, you just fill a bag and send it in. ThredUP's clean-out kit is basically just a large plastic bag. You fill it with clothes, accessories, and shoes that meet their criteria. Ship it back, and they list and sell what they can.
If you want to refresh your closet, you can choose shopping credit instead of a cash payout. ThredUp also partners with many clothing brands to offer credit on new clothes.
While ThredUP won’t work as a side hustle, it's a perfect solution for a one-stop shop for closet cleanout. Consider the money earned a little reward for decluttering.
More About Facebook Marketplace: Also Groovy
The main selling point for Facebook Marketplace is that it is Facebook’s Marketplace. Built directly into the Facebook app, if you have a Facebook account, you won’t have to sign up for a new service, make a profile, or any of the other setup things that other apps require. Communication with potential buyers takes place in Facebook messenger. The ability to use the tools you are already using is incredibly convenient and a good argument for choosing Facebook Marketplace.
But the best feature of Facebook Marketplace is not that you already use it, it’s that everyone else does too. Particularly for selling things locally, where you have a smaller pool of potential buyers, it helps to be on the app where all the people are.
Many other marketplace sites take a fee, but on Facebook Marketplace, you take care of everything yourself so they don’t charge at all. While this means you can make a larger profit, you have no protection against scams. Facebook does provide some tips for making sure that you get paid for your items, as well as guidance on how to meet buyers safely.
You can post items to ship, but I think Facebook Marketplace is best as a local marketplace. Large items like furniture and cars can be difficult to list online, and the Marketplace app offers a way to reach a large pool of buyers quickly and efficiently. For smaller items that are easy to ship, you may want to consider one of the other apps on the list because you are likely to make more money on those sites.
More About Tradesy: Also Groovy
After you enter the pictures and description of your item, Tradesy helps you set a price. The app will offer a suggestion based on market data, but you can change it if you like. The “smart pricing” feature is a good way of earning as much as possible without having your listing sit for too long. You set a floor price -- the lowest price you are willing to accept for the item. Then, the price of your item drops twenty percent weekly from your original asking price until it hits the floor.
You can choose between three different shipping options: a shipping kit, where all the shipping materials are sent to you, a printable label, or supplying all your own packaging and postage. So whether you have a small shipping empire in your living room or don't even have a printer, you're taken care of.
Tradesy takes a whopping 19% commission on items over $50. While this is about double what apps like Mercari and eBay charge, the total price of items sold on Tradesy tends to be higher, so payouts can be large. Customers come to the app looking for high-end goods and are prepared to pay for them.
Other Apps Considered
OfferUp is a wide-ranging marketplace for local and shipped items. And I'm not joking about wide-ranging: the listings for my area included cars, a toilet, tchotchkes, and crafting materials just on the opening screen.
It’s easy to post items to sell, and you can choose between shipping and meeting up with local buyers. This is a good choice for selling locally but doesn’t have as large a user base as Facebook Marketplace, our pick for local selling. It might be worthwhile to list your items on both apps, however.
The original online marketplace, eBay continues to be a great place to sell almost anything. You can choose between auctioning items and setting a price. With a large customer base, you can definitely make some extra cash on the app, but some newer app options are more user-friendly.
That said, eBay is massive and has a proven track record of providing users with a side hustle, so it's worth checking out.
With an interface that resembles Instagram, the ability to connect with friends on the app and share posts on your social media accounts, Poshmark seems to be making a bid to be the social media app of secondhand fashion. While I question whether that’s something we needed, the app does have a large user base and is easy to browse. The app feels more oriented towards buyers than sellers, but since you want potential buyers to enjoy using the app, this may be a benefit.
On Depop, users create shops to sell clothes and accessories. Definitely, the most youth-oriented app we tested, the app would be best for people with a lot of trendy items to sell. You have to make a store to sell things (you can’t list individual items), so the app is a bigger commitment than many of the others.
But if you are looking to build a side hustle, Depop lets you brand yourself more effectively than other apps. Having a store makes it easier to attract repeat buyers.
Decluttr offers a simple process for selling CDs, DVDs, games, and tech. If you have lots of these items, it might be worth checking out. You scan in the barcodes of DVD's etc. or select the model of tech device to get your payout information instantly. Then you just send in your stuff.
However, the app is clunky and difficult to use. You can’t shop on the app, but they do pay outright for items when you send them in, so checking out the marketplace for buyers isn’t important with this one.
Caroline Rothnie
Hard as I try to keep a minimalist phone, I can't stop downloading more apps. In addition to my can't-live-without apps for organization, music and podcasts, fitness, and meditation, I'm constantly trying out new ones. So I love apps, but it's a complicated relationship -- some of my favorites are for keeping me off my phone/internet.
In second grade, I attempted to do a book report on a story I had written myself, so you could say I've always thought of myself as a writer. These days, I write a wide variety of web content with a focus on mental health and productivity. I also write personal essays. I live in Kansas with my husband and two dogs.

Spring is here, and if you're looking to declutter and make some extra cash at the same time, there are many apps to help. We tested nine popular apps for selling your stuff online to find out how to make the most money with the least effort.
Mercari, a marketplace where you can sell almost anything, was our favorite for its great seller guidance. We also loved ThredUP's one-step decluttering process and found that Facebook Marketplace was best for local sales. And Tradesy was our favorite for high-end fashion.
