5 Tips for Choosing an App for Buying and Selling that is Right for You

Last updated:

Finding the right app for buying and selling can be hard if you don’t know where to start. We put together a list of 5 things you should consider before you make your pick, so you can easily find the right one for you.

Are you looking for an easy way to sell things online? Or, do you want to find the best deals for clothes and shoes? Before you start, identify what your needs are, so you know exactly what to look for.

Keep reading below or...

Go To Best 10 Apps for Buying & Selling
  1. Locate free & sale items to save money
  2. Learn how to buy & sell to make money
  3. Save time by buying & selling only the items you need
  4. Find sales near & far to easily locate exactly what you need
  5. Get new customers by discovering new places to buy & sell

For those of you who want to find great items without spending a lot of money, you’ll want an app that lets you create watchlists, so you can get alerts when an item you want goes on sale. With instant notifications on your phone, you will never miss a great deal again.

If you want to make sure you are getting the best deal available, you’ll want an app that compares prices at nearby stores, classifieds, and websites. Apps like RedLaser and Goodzer even let you scan barcodes for items when you are at a store, and they will instantly notify you if you can get a better price somewhere else.

On the other hand, if you want to save money shopping at a specific store, you might prefer an app that searches for any free coupons and discounts you can use. For extra convenience, some apps even use your GPS location to notify you of any special offers as soon as you step into the store!

Want to make some easy money? Many users sell items, both new and used, really cheap on apps like Craigslist and eBay. You can find anything from Verizon smartphones to vintage furniture at prices you probably won’t find anywhere else. Spot a great deal, buy it at a low price and then resell it at a higher price. It is that simple!

For those of you who want to buy and sell things online but don’t know where to start, you’ll want an app that keeps it simple and walks you through the process step-by-step. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, and OfferUp are designed for the casual seller, so you can easily learn how to sell products online with just a few taps.

Is this your first time selling? You might prefer an app that streamlines the process by requiring minimal input on your end. Apps that offer services such as prepaid shipping labels or that use your GPS location to maximize your exposure to potential buyers, can make the process of buying and selling much easier.

If you need help making up your mind between two items, you’ll want an app that highlights top customer reviews. By reading other people’s opinion on items such as cell phones, speakers and tools, you can easily identify the pros and cons for each one and be confident with your decision.

Want to make easy money by selling unused items you have lying around the house? You’ll want to sell your items on online thrift stores such as Depop, ThredUp, and Vinted that will help you turn your used clothes into cash.

On the other hand, if you simply want a fast way to get rid of any unused items, you might prefer an app that automatically makes an offer on items that you want to sell. By simply uploading a brief description and picture of your item, you will get an offer on the product right away. Selling your items to a reseller is an easy way to make quick money, without dealing with customers.

For those of you who want to buy, trade and sell specific items quickly and efficiently, you’ll want to use a specialized shopping app that caters to the type of item you have in mind. For example, if you are only interested in buying shoes, you’ll quickly find what you need with a shoe shopping app rather than a marketplace app that sells thousands of different items.

In fact, specialized shopping apps tend to have a large selection of specific types of items. So, if you are having a hard time finding a particular item, such as an old book, then your best bet is to use a dedicated book app, like BookScouter and BookChor.

On the other hand, if you are looking to buy a car you saw at the Detroit Auto Show, you’ll benefit the most from a specialized car shopping app like CarMax, Cars.com and True Car. Apps that sell specific products typically have guides and search filters to help you find exactly what you are looking for. For example, a car shopping app can let you filter results by year, model, make, seats, trunk size, mileage, and more!

Whether you are interested in buying or selling necklaces and earrings, or man stuff like motorcycles, black dress shoes or a wallet, using a specialized shopping app can save you time by showing you only the types of items you are interested in. Not only will you quickly find what you want, but you also won’t be tempted into buying things you don’t need.

For those of you want to buy and sell items online without the delay typically associated with out of state shipping, you’ll want an app that uses your GPS location to find the bests deals near you. Apps like Craigslist, OLX, and OfferUp enable users to easily buy, swap and sell stuff locally.

If you want to buy large and heavy items, like furniture or cars, you might prefer an app that lets you filter search results by location. By restricting search results to your city or neighborhood you can figure out a cheap and fast way to pick them up directly from the owner. No need to pay expensive shipping fees!

On the other hand, if you are looking for specialty items such as vintage clothing, art pieces or old books, you might want to expand your search to include other countries, like Canada, Mexico, Colombia, and more. By searching for items on international apps and websites, you might have a better chance at finding those unique items you are looking for.

If you are having a hard time selling some of your items, you might want to expand your exposure by using apps that are used by millions of people around the world. Quickly check the number of downloads an app has, so you can get an idea of how many people use the app.

If you want to reach the largest number of potential buyers, you’ll also want to make sure you pick a shopping app that is available on both Android and iOS phones. That way your items can be visible to anybody, regardless of the type of phone they use.

Whether you want to buy or sell items, it is also a good idea to shop around on more than one app. Marketplace platforms like Resale Connection, Clothes Closet, Clothes Mentor, Whoo Upscale Resale for a Cause, Plato’s Closet and Target tend to have a wide variety of items. However, you might be surprised with some of the neat things you can find in for sale by owner apps like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Offer Up, Swappa, and Close5.

Now you know everything about buying, selling and trading items online. So, go ahead and check out our list of the Best 10 Apps for Buying and Selling!

    • I’ve had this app for a few years. Let me tell you, it is phenomenal!!! Women’s, Men’s,& kids clothing and accessories. Of course like any other site there are some scammers who will try to get you, but they are taken care of quickly and the vinted team is always 100% ready to help with any issues. You can pick your preferences so you don’t have to scroll through tons of items you’d never want. All items I have ever purchased have been exactly as the seller has described. You can get some AMAZING deals and the bundles are even better! 99% of the people are super nice and very communicative. Tracking is super easy. The only thing I will say that needs fixed is when a scammer leaves a bad review on your account, it cannot be removed. That is my only complaint. Poshmark and Mercari do not compare in my opinion because everything on those sites are so pricey for the same quality pieces you would get on vinted and for a lot cheaper! Definitely recommend vinted ❤️

The pictures and the ways that they design the game are brilliant, especially the levels that require you to interact with things before you can find what you need. Hope that there will be more updates soon and I am really looking forward for the new levels!

Poshmark - Buy & Sell Fashion
    • I sell on this app and I have over 100 listings. I love it so much and it has only been 1 and a half months and I have already sold 10 things! (Considering that these are all my unworn clothes or slightly used clothes that I was going to give away) it was very impressing. I have all 5 star reviews! But, the one thing is Poshmarks fee is pretty high. If you sell something for $10 you only get $7.05. Or, $100 you only get $80. So it is a 20% fee. I have found other apps that don’t have a fee like this app Vinted, but when I sell something it wants my Social Security number, so don’t get that app by the way. However another thing Vinted has us where you can chose how heavy what you are shipping will be, so you don’t have to pay 6.99 for shipping after your first purchase. I think Sellers should be able to chose the weight so buyers don’t have to pay so much! But other than those two minor improvements Poshmark could make I absolutely love the app and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in buying, or selling on this app. It is completely secure and doesn’t ask for you social like that Fraud app Vinted. And has a buyer return policy, so if you don’t get what you were supposed to then you get your money back! Anyways, definitely get this app and check it out!

    • Ignore the old reviews that say it crashes constantly, that it’s spam, disorganized, not managed etc., All that is untrue. You can sort and search by category, name pr type of item, price etc., You can also Reserve items for your buyer and schedule a meet up. It then goes into both of your “My transactions” tab. It even sends a reminder message to buyer and seller the day of the meet. Each group “community” seems to have their own rules but lots of them are the same. Negative reviews here complaining about those rules should not have joined that community. The rules are listed right on the same page as “request to join”. If they didn’t like the rules why join? I myself want a group that has some rules, structure and has someone available if I have a question. I don’t get that with other buy and sell apps. I like that the groups are local. I don’t have to worry about where the item is located or how far I have to drive to get it. Much better format too! So easy to find what I am looking for.

    Mercari: The Selling App
    • I’ve been selling items on the Mercari App for 2 years and have NOT had one bad experience. A couple of things positive, Mercari only takes 10% and now when you go through a few steps to verify who you are, and a small fee, you can get paid immediately to your bank account once buyer has reviewed you and accepted your items. I would say the only thing which could use improving is the ability to manage your page and how items are arranged. You either have to list everything in each category back to back or all your items are just listed how you enter them. I find it a bit sloppy looking but I’m meticulous about organizing and how it appears to a buyer. At least you don’t have to share each item individually every day in order for your items to be seen and show up on search results. Make sure to be very descriptive in your title and your item will populate on a search. I don’t sell as much on this app as other apps but when I do at least the majority of the money goes into my pocket not theirs.

    • Actually, it's been fun. Picked up some promo gifts, won a few low priced bids which surprized me. Got everything i've ordered or won. Everything was straight up , as described, and all shipments came on or ahead of time. Not getting what I order or shipping problems are why I left "Wish" !

letgo: Buy & Sell Used Stuff, Cars, Furniture
    • I was talking to Someone on the app who was selling a new phone and I offered cash but he wanted a “down payment” of 50$ sent to him on ‘Cashapp’. I asked why and he said because last time he met someone with money in hand the person apparently ran off with the phone from him. So I believed him and i sent him the 50$ and he claimed he never got it yet it sent to him so I sent it again and found out I actually sent 100$. He told me to meet him at a park and once I notified him I was there, he never showed up And didn’t respond for hours. This happens twice after I threaten to call the police on him and file a report. He then didn’t respond to me on letgo and claimed I was scamming him for money yet he never even showed his face or name to me. He refuses to meet with me to do the transaction yet I said I’d let him keep the 100$ if he still met up with me. Annoyingly he never did and ive been left with just being able to report him but not get any return or have him punished. I’ve been using this app for a few years now and have sold and bought a lot of things with no problems and have even ha many family and friends join the app and I am verified. It’s quite upsetting that I have to report this person to the police and his brother for scamming me and never showing up. Please ban them Immediately and have them reported as well thank u so much. I’d really hate to retire from such a good and fun/easy app.

OfferUp - Buy. Sell. Offer Up
    • Offerup is seriously the best selling app (for me). I stay in the Dallas, TX area and as you can imagine there are a lot of people here. So, I guess there’s a lot of traffic in my area for selling and buying items. I have over 700 sales and with all 5 star reviews. Anywho, the only issue, which isn’t really an issue. I’m just being picky now because offerup is so perfect lol. The only flaw I believe offerup has is the fee for shipping your items. I know Facebook marketplace only charges a 5% fee of the item price (it doesn’t take in account the shipping cost, which is good). Mercari charges a 10% fee (of the sale, doesn’t take in account the shipping cost as well). If offerup could go back to being somewhere in the middle like it used to be when they first started, that would be awesome! I think they were charging like 7.9% when they first opted in the shipping option, then increased to 9.9% and now we’re at 12.9%. I’m just worried they’re going to keep increasing and with shipping prices increasing as well, it makes it a little tougher to really make money as a seller and to give good deals for the buyers. That’s it, that’s me venting haha, but offerup is great! If you have issues with offerup, good luck reaching them through their email or app. They only respond to me on Twitter. So, give Twitter a shot!
