5 Benefits of Locking Your Phone Screen

Locking Your Screen Can Protect Your Privacy

The first benefit of locking your phone screen is to protect yourself from identity theft. Your phone goes with you just about anywhere. This means that all of the information that you have on your phone goes with you. That's why protecting your privacy and the privacy of your friends and family is essential.

So just imagine having your phone stolen without it being locked. This means that someone who is good at hacking might have access to your bank accounts, your emails and much more. Not only that but the thief will have access to the phone numbers of your friends and family.

Yes, having your phone with you all the time is convenient and helpful. But it also is convenient and helpful for those who find it or steal it use it to take your money or identity.

Locking Your Screen can Lower Distractions

Along with protecting yourself from identity theft, locking your phone can also reduce distraction. When your phone is unlocked, you are going to be tempted to check your email, social media sites, and play your favorite games. This isn't such a problem when you are at home and relaxing. But if you are at work or school, the last thing you need is to have more distractions.

So let's say you are in a meeting at work or you are in a class at school, and your phone is unlocked. You decide to just check your Facebook feed really quickly. But then you see someone has passed you on your favorite game. So you decide to open up that app and overtake them.

You might miss something important during the meeting or class, which is bad enough. But even worse, your boss or teacher might catch you. In other words, locking your phone is the best idea when you are out and about.

Screen Locking can Help Save Your Battery

Furthermore, did you know that locking your screen can cut down on how fast your battery can drain? There's nothing worse than needing to use your phone and finding that your phone is dead or that you are down to 10% battery life. If you are somewhere where charging your phone is not a big problem, it's OK. But if you are out hiking somewhere and you are using your phone as a compass or just for safety, it's important to preserve your phone battery.

Since we're discussing preserving your battery, some other ways that you can preserve your battery is by turning off your notifications, going on airplane mode or even turning down the brightness on your phone.  Another good way to do is to download an app that optimizes your phone battery

Locking Your Screen can Save Data

Now, let's talk about another great reason to lock your phone. If you're lucky enough to have unlimited data on your phone plan, then this isn't something you have to worry about. However, those of us who don't have unlimited data or who have had high bills due to using way too much data know how big pain data overages can be.

It's so easy to go over your data, especially when you're bored and sitting in your car waiting for your child to come out of school or when you're eating at a restaurant alone. You play a game here or check your email there, or, the mother of all data eaters, watching a viral video and BAM, you have an expensive phone bill. But if you lock your screen, you're less tempted to sign onto your phone.

Along with locking your phone, you can also download a data tracker app to help you keep track of the data you're using.  This way, you don't have to worry about any unpleasant surprises on your phone bill.

Locking Your Screen Protects Your Phone

Finally, let's get real here. We take our phones with us everywhere, like work, parties, restaurants, shopping, bars, etc. Some places you're with friends and you don't have to worry about anyone doing anything untoward with your phone. Other places, not so much. You could have your phone stolen and the next thing you know you have phone calls to Australia on your phone bill that you know you didn't make. Locking your phone can help you avoid this problem.

Even if your phone is lost or just misplaced, you may have information on there that you may not want out there for the general public to see.  Things like the text fight you had with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or the time you were being catty about a coworker to your sister. Locking your phone can help you with avoiding all kinds of embarrassment.

You never know what might happen. You might miss something important or you may have your identity stolen. Neither possibility sounds like a good one. So the next time you go anywhere, think about locking your phone. Even if it just saves you from a high data bill, you might find that it's worth it.
