  • Should be combined with Microsoft Family Safety Sep 24, 2020

    By Phil Wells
I now have two separate apps - Microsoft Family Safety and Xbox Family Settings - that I can use to manage my kids’ access to their devices. I can set app-specific limits in the former, but not the latter. Other settings are available in the latter but not the former. Why have these not been consolidated into a single app that can do everything?

Makes it a lot easier to control kids settings....would be nice to be able to add or remove family members from it though.

I know it may not be popular but I need an effective way to get my kids attention without physically standing between them and the TV. Please add a “pause” button for us parents! Great app

A simple to use way to monitor my kids screen time without having to go to a cumbersome website. 5 stars, would limit playtime again!

Please add the ability to change whether my child needs permission to make purchases or not. This is the main thing I use and it’s basically the only family safety setting missing..

Look, I'll be honest: the app is in the worst state it's ever been. Mobile play is a joke, the controller function now has too much lag and bugs out, your captures take an absurd time to load, there is too much re-tapping to get menus to transition, parties now bug out, and even messages triple send sometimes. This upsets me because the previous version was pretty much flawless. A little slow loading videos, but that's it. This new version just isn't anywhere near what it was.

The old app was better. I could add money to my sons account, limit time on specific games, and it just seemed to have a lot more options. On this app I can’t do that and the old app was completely changed so now I have to go to some website to change the time allowed on my sons games. I give him a little extra time on weekends so it’s a pain to have to go through extra steps. I’d love the old app back, or combine the two to give us parents those options again.

All of the features I used this app for have either disappeared or gotten worse since this "update." Achievements completely removed from the app. The remote function is harder to find and doesn't work as well. Not to mention they removed the TV part of the remote completely. I could go on for paragraphs listing all of the things that got worse about the app but instead ill just hope they plan to restore features now that the new UI has been rolled out

All I wanted this app for was to look at my captures from my phone and to answer my messages easily. This fails at both. Over half of my captures refuse to load and if they do, they take forever to buffer. The messages glitch out and it often results in you not seeing recently sent or recieved messages and messages doubling. I don't use many of the other features but this app has become stupidly difficult to use recently. It used to be so much better.

While I understand the need to update the app to allow for XCloud, it has made basically every function of the app slow and clunky. I mostly used the previous version of the app to share and watch game captures and at least the former iteration of the app could play these videos seamlessly. Very disappointed in this update, I hope they can fix it soon.

The only legitimate use of this app is to control your Xbox through your smart phone so you don't have to have a bulky controller out and on all the time. Everything else is really just extra niche stuff. Somehow after the last update you've ruined the one thing the app was probably really used for? How is this possible when the remote function itself basically didn't change? Edit.. Swipe function issues on the remote seem to be resolved. It's at least usable again. Bumped up to 4 stars.

This is much better than the Family Safety App (a nightmare). But I think you must have both apps if you want to manage your kids screen time. Clunky and counterintuitive. Adding screen time should be easy. It’s not. You can only add time in specific blocks. For Instance: If you want 1 hour and 15 minutes for your kid you have to select either 1 hour OR 15 minutes...then wait for your kid to shout from the basement “I thought you said 1 hour 15 minutes! My time just ended!” THEN you can add the rest of the time. Once you select a time you’re bound to it. It’s a pain and silly. This is one example of the sloppy design.

I can appreciate the improvements made to this app, however all the features I previously used have been removed. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is no longer being able to view xbox live games and sales. Even the games shown that friend play won't show a price or options to buy. Instead it just says Download to Console, whether or not it is owned. Only use the app has now is to look at owned game library, which is the only thing worth an extra star, and chat with friends

The new design and layout is pretty but it has taken away so much functionality that it is almost not worth having on my phone anymore. I can't browse the store or redeem codes anymore. If I want to see what's on sale I have to wait until I have the chance to get on my Xbox at home. Very upset and disappointed. Why would you take away the ability to browse the store??

Awful, the new update made video captures unwatchable as they now run at 10-15 frames per second. Not only that, but it also removed a key feature that allowed a user to share pictures from the phone library through Xbox messages. I hardly ever use the app anymore, whereas previously it was the true companion app for my Xbox One experience. As someone that doesn't care about remote play this update has brought more bad than good.

Why does Microsoft, one of the biggest soft and hardware developers in the world have to have so many badly managed apps to control a console. Designs it from the ground up, make it user friendly and consolidate it in one app and not a little bit here and there. Poor Managment and control of the products being put out the - maybe it’s time to switch to Sony!
