this app is really good, 1% chance you might find a weirdo😂, over all really good. if your wanting to learn Russian, french or Chinese this the app for you, or my foreigners who want to learn english theres alot of native speakers. there was a shutdown a week ago, and tandem wasnt working for 4 days. hopefully it doesn't happen again

  • 5 Star app if glitches can be fixed. Still HIGHLY recommend!

    by jacey.love.hate.you

I really want to leave more than three stars because this app is so fantastic in theory. The problem is that a lot of the time your messages are in accessible because you have to scroll up and then down and then up and then down and repeat about four or five times to actually get your messages to load. When I first downloaded the app I had gotten over 200 messages the first day and it made it really rough to talk to people and figure out who would be a good teacher and mentor and that I could help in the same way because with so many messages coming in and not being able to load more than the first 10 to 15 messages made it extremely difficult. Right now I have my free 30 day trial for pro and so far the pro options are really great. I would give this App five stars in a heartbeat if and only if we could get a little bit smoother interface and a better flow when trying to load Messages. This app has so much potential and you can really learn a lot there are many very helpful people I still highly recommend that you download this app and try to get to know people and talk with them about the languages you’re interested in because it’s still a very valuable app. I really haven’t had any issues with spammers or bots or Advertisements or anything like that which is great!

  • Good app, with some improvements it will be great!

    by theclarest

I only downloaded the app just today, so maybe that's not long enough to judge it, but I'm thinking of these things now. I really love having live conversations with people all over the world! I am mostly talking to people from the Spanish speaking world, but I can't figure out how to also search for and start a conversation with someone who speaks a different language (because I also want to improve my Korean). I have enjoyed my short text conversations, but I haven't used the video calls yet because of my schedule. Another problem I have with the app is that it has limited translation abilities, which I guess can be a good thing so you don't rely too heavily on built in translation, but sometimes it helps to move a conversation along faster if you can look up a word rather than ask "Cómo se dice "..." en inglés?" each time you don't know something. This app also has an option to play a language game with someone who is also active on the site at the moment, but it always says "connection failed" when I try to play a game, even over a strong wifi signal. If these small things are fixed, I'll definitely change my rating!

  • by Amir Yekta

I've been using this App for almost 3 years, it's awesome, but the new update is really bad. conversation are now limited to only native people of the language that you are learning and you can't talk to other people with different native languages, even if you add an specific country. that's really a weak point now

  • Pretty good as language exchange apps go

    by djdkdkkddk

Does have all the normal problems of language exchange sites, namely that it doesn't give enough prompting to start interesting conversations and you have to do all the work if you want to actually find practice buddies. I would love it if there were better search options, like self-assignable tags that allow you to search for people with similar interests. The existing search options also shouldn't be so limiting. I personally prefer to talk to non-natives learning the same languages as me because it's less intimidating. Also the "only show natives" and "only show perfect match" buttons shouldn't be mutually inclusive. I think the thing I dislike the most is the topic prompts. Almost everybody uses the dumb autogenerated topics like "I can teach you German grammar" or "Let's talk about what it means to be human", even if they have no interest in talking about that. It's a nice idea in concept but I think it at least needs more interesting, relatable prompts, and if possible just more incentivizing to customize your profile in general might go a long way towards more interesting conversations.

  • by Farid Fakharzadeh

Not satisfied with the recent update. I mainly use the app for the purpose of learning about different cultures around the world, but now I'm only limited to members who speak my target languages. For instance, I cannot search people who are native English speakers, simply because it is one of the languages I know and I'm not learning it.

  • Wow wow wow

    by foupourfrancais

C’est super! This app does almost everything i want it too. I like the text functionality that allows you to correct & translate messages people send you. I also like that you can just send voice messages instead of calling each other. It’s much less pressure. Overall you get such a bang for your buck with this app and you get what you put into it. So far I’ve met many people who are serious about language learning. Very patient and willing to help you if you help them... the fact that you can skip the line and get a 7 day free trial for tandem pro (without entering any card information) is so nice. After only 2 days using pro I can say paying for a subscription is absolutely worth it. One functionality I’d like added is the ability to turn voice messages into text... at times if someone I’m chatting with doesn’t understand what I said in a voice message I write out everything I said. It would be nice if a speech to text feature was available for voice messages. Also at times I want to speak but I don’t know what words I want to say. The quick action translate button is handy for texting but not for speaking. This means if i toggle from a text translation to a voice message I lose what I just translated... and unless I have a great memory I forget what I wanted to say. If there was a way for the translation to still be seen on the screen where you record a voice message that would fix everything.

This app is perfect. I made too many international friendships and also I'm improving my English. I found tourists and help them to travel to my country. I realized so many interesting thing about diffrent cultures.

  • Best way to learn a language.

    by The_Khwarezmian_Shah

I have tried many language apps, some rather expensive, and while they are good for reviewing vocab, they aren't very fun and they aren't very effective. However, with this app, you can have conversations with real native speakers who are trying to learn your own language! I have been conversing with several Russians over the last few days and I have learned more about the language and culture than I had in many weeks through less effective means. Not to mention I have made many friends who I can talk with every day! I just can't think of any negatives with this program: the ads are not annoying, it is rightfully simple and straightforword, and you have a nearly endless list of people who want to learn your language and teach you theirs! I must recommend this to anyone who is interesting in learning a language. It is an essential.

  • by Aaron Klein

It's a good app but they put out updates before making sure if it will work. The app is unusable on my phone after the last update.

  • Awesome way to practice a language

    by molamolafromlisboa

I always tell myself I should start getting comfy speaking a language, and really force myself to speak it without a translator. Tandem, thank you! This app is forcing me to practice my Portuguese, but this review will be in English. 😉 Tandem has an easy to use GUI, but I didn't know of all the features until I saw people I was talking to use them. There are built-in ways to comment and correct a message someone previously said that is very easy for them to read. For example, the corrections and edits are explicitly colored. It may be a simple feature, but I definitely wouldn't take it for granted. I wish there would be a way to correct on someone's "comment." Currently, my workaround is to copy the portion of the comment I want to correct as a new message, and correct it myself without the nice coloring.

  • by Simon Tablazon

Really nice app, but I have one complaint. For my chinese conversations the messages don't get delivered for a long time. It always says "Sent" but not "Delivered". This is not what happens to my other conversations from other countries.

  • Good in principle, not great for learning

    by enelson76

This app has the right idea, and has worked in helping me find good people to practice Chinese with. But here are the the main issues with this app. First, you NEED a better iPad version! It doesn’t rotate into landscape mode so I can use it with my keyboard. That’s a show stopper for me! Second, I love the in-place translation services to facilitate communication when you don’t now how to say something, but many times I’m told that the translations aren’t great. Third, and this isn’t the fault of the developer, but most people on this site are more interested in just chatting in their own language, than learning/teaching. It seems more like a hangout place than a learning app. So you’ll have to sift through many people to find ones that are truly interested in helping you learn. But overall, this is a great concept and I hope the app continues to refine and become a learning tool.

  • Great but not perfect

    by zBen Ctarik

I have had this app for about 8 hours and i love it. I've practiced a lot of spanish, helped with a lot of english, and had a few genuinely interesting conversations. the issue is that I've practiced spanish, despite downloading to try to lean hawaiian. The app is great for what it does, but it offers so many different languages as options to put on your profile that it's a real shame you can't search for people by language. I've gotten lots of messages from spanish russian and turkish people, which is great since i don't mind helping with english and i want to practice all three of those languages, but i'm finding it pretty hard to find anybody who speaks anything else. All in all, I'd call this app a good idea done well but missing a crucial feature.

  • by Rajesh Rathode

it is best app i would recommend to those people who are really want to improve their communication skills on any language

  • Best way to make friends from around the world!

    by Qman_15

I love this app. It is so easy to meet fun, interesting people and practice your language skills at the same time. I also appreciate how hard the Devs are working on it, too, with updates like the recent World Cup feature. One recommendation I have is to add the ability to send gifs or pictures from the text chat like you can in GroupMe. This would change the game because emojis can only take you so far. One bug I noticed is that no matter how many times I approve/grant tandem access to my Facebook likes, I can never get them to show on my profile, and I can’t see others’ Facebook likes either. Still, overall, great, quality app.

  • Good App

    by Mast3r Click3r

I have 2 ideas that would improve the experience. Have a range of 1-5 when people sign up to show how much they desire to learn the language. Or how much time they will give daily/ weekly. Then people can be paired with others who are willingly to spend a similar amount of time with each other. This has been a problem because some people don’t want to give that much time. Or too much time. Also, have an option to pair people with their same level of language, which would require a range of 5 options for language level, not 3. Being paired with somebody at the same level has worked out the best for me. This would result in people using the app more and relationships lasting longer. Maybe some people would like to be paired with others who have the opposite skill level too. Both of these ideas could be a filter for when searching for learners to chat with. Give sample structures and ideas on how to go about learning. Ex. One person translates their language sentence into the other using google etc. They read it in the new language and the other listens and corrects. And they can switch.

  • by Stanislav Kalishin

Thank you for the great app! But why not the ability to send videos? At least short?

  • Problems with sent messages

    by AugustoB92

This app is cool. it’s useful to meet people and practice languages. However, there is one technical difficulty that’s annoying. sometimes, when you send a message, it says “sent” but in reality, the recipient never received it. and it can happen with messages sent in between other messages. so you can send 3 messages in a row, and messages 1 and 3 are received but message 2 is in “sent” mode but i can tell the person never received or read it because the mode hasn’t changed. it can lead in disruption of conversation because of you asked an important question and it’s never received but a message before and after are received, it would definitely be confusing. that needs work

  • I think it’s an awesome idea

    by EmilyShiranui

This app has really effected me, I have made friends on the app and I really enjoy being able to share my cultures with others and vise versa. Something That I believe that could make the app better is develop more on the social media aspect. It would be really cool to see the people you follow being able to post pictures or stories similar to Instagram and snapchat. I understand this is geared towards language exchange, but I just think building more of a social media attribute would make the app more desirable to use. Any way that’s just my opinion, other than that I really like this app and I am great full to live in a time where this is possible!

  • by Nicolás Jiménez Bautista

I really like and enjoy using the app. it's a must if you want to learn from other cultures and languages.

  • great !! but need bug fixes

    by Moonlight nasa

It would be great if you add an option to delete all the messages once , without deleting one by one , and also please support iPad version by allow Horizontal option, also support log out option ( which mean not receiving any notifications!) because in this i even received notifications while i’m already logged out! so you guys need to fix it , also when i delete a conversation. and shut the app and reopen it again, i find the conversation that i’ve been deleted ! so it’s frustrating. everything i delete in this app i found it again! so what’s the point of delete button!

  • Good for finding the right partner

    by Adrian Beaker

I was looking for an app that would allow me to see more details about potential language partners and set parameters when I’m searching for them, so I can find the best possible match of languages, interest, etc. This app does pretty well. The only real downside that I can see is that come when you click on a message from a language partner, you don’t have quite as many options as you do in Hello Talk (Translate, Comment, Correct, etc. are there but in Hello Talk there are more and they’re laid out better). But this really isn’t a big deal.

my chat records disappeared, can't find it anymore

  • please help😊

    by Wifowbruxvalf

I have had this app a little over a week and I love it. I haven’t had any issues or problems until today. It says I have no members that match my filters, which is pretty impossible since earlier today I had a lot. I went through my settings and the filters to see if maybe I had accidentally hit something, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t anything different from earlier to now. I tried deleting the app and redownloadjng it, and also resetting my phone, but nothing is helping. It is a great app, though, so as long as this gets fixed, I’d say it is definitely worth downloading!😊

  • FIXED: Won’t let me change my gender

    by MidnightAlure

I’ve used tandem years ago, and it worked fine (which is why I’m giving it the first two stars). Unfortunately, I’m trying to make a profile now and choose “Female” as my gender, and it gives me an error when I try to continue, saying “Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again.” So, as of right now, the app is unusable. I’ll give it a better rating once I can actually use it. UPDATE: Actually, restarting the app fixed the problem. It’s still a bit off-putting for there to be an immediate problem when trying to sign up for an app, though.

  • by Beluma Castillo

its a great app for mandarin, people is so nice

  • Don’t update it. FIX IT DEVELOPERS

    by Emmticing

I really want to give this app a 5/5 but this last update killed it for me. I have so much fun meeting new people and learning things about different languages. I’ve made connections and support systems that would never have been possible HOWEVER this last update gave the app all the problems that it never had. Within two seconds of opening the app it just freezes, requiring a force quit every time. When it works it’s perfect for my new friends and I. But i can’t tell how many tones I get to use it anymore because it seems like I’m just force quitting every other time. Besides that, this app is wonderful 🙃

  • Incredible community and service!

    by 838575884

Tandem is a great community of people who want to exchange languages. I've met so many friendly and enthusiastic partners on this app. It has helped to improve my language skills immensely. Their service team is amazing as well! I had a slight problem with an over friendly partner, and they immediately replied to my report and banned the user. I was impressed with how quickly they responded to my request. I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to learn or improve their language skills. A+ rating from me 😊

  • So much fun!

    by Chiefstingy

So I have had this app for less than a day. I would have to say it is some of the most fun I have had in a long while. In the past I wills have to meet people from all around the world through aol and yahoo messenger. Now that those are basically gone, this is a great resource to practice the languages I know but also to meet amazing people. Some drawbacks. I was being messaged like crazy. I tried making myself not online but was still getting a new message every 5-10 minutes. Using the voice messaging was really slow. It took a while to download and play a voice message, even on a strong WiFi (assuming it is a peer-to-peer issue). Have not tried video chat because, well it was my first time using it and people didn’t trust me yet and visa versa. Overall I enjoy using the app. I have already started recommending it to my friends. It is much easier to use than other language exchange websites out there.

  • Best Language learning app!!!

    by BirdyBelle26

I downloaded tandem and was so impressed with it that I bought premium three days in, not because you need to (like at all) to get use out of the app but because I wanted to show my support and to keep it free for everyone to use. I have connected with so many people willing to help. I have already had 4 video calls in one week of the app! All in all, if you are serious about actually learning how to communicate in your target language than this is the app for you!

  • Drowning in messages

    by RWine :)

Tandem has a huge community which is fantastic, and it's user friendly. But there are SO many people constantly messaging you that you lose the people you were trying to have a conversation with, etc. I wish there was some kind of separate tab for new messages separate from current conversations and a filter to keep certain people from messaging you or something. I've been discouraged from using it because I feel so drained going through the message after five minutes to find the few cool people I am trying to talk to or delete the perverts.

  • Great app, made some friends

    by Dontluvittomuch

This app is super cool, and i’ve made a bunch of friends with others that help me improve my french, while I help them improve their english. There are some things that I would like improved though, like the ability to change the first profile picture and change your level of language as those are determined when you first create your account and cannot be changed later. Overall, great app and I would recommend for anyone looking to improve their conversational skills in a foreign language.

  • Tandem

    by Lawrence712

It’s generally a pretty good app to me. After all, it’s all about making friends and learning languages. I have been using it for years and even had to sign up for a new account after I forgot the password for my previous account and lost all history data. I don’t use it that often tho. It’s more like aa app I tend to use once in a while(probably one of the reasons why I haven’t improved my Spanish much after so many years. But I DID found it got very inconvenient when they started to charge for translation feature.

  • Sometimes messages don’t seem like they have been received

    by The Citative

Sometimes if I receive a message, i can’t tell because the chat doesn’t change from white to grayish. This will sometimes cause me to not see someone’s message and not notice until a month later I know this isn’t just for me because it seems to be happening to others as well, I’ve talked to a fair amount of people and usually our conversations stop because someone has missed a notification, even if we were having a great conversation

  • Probably my favorite app of all time

    by Stephen & Co

Easily the most effective language learning out I’ve ever tried. I think I’ve learned more in the last week talking to Tandem users than in the 6 months prior. The community is expertly curated and everything seems to just fall into place easily. It really is incredible. The ONLY complaint I have is that it absolutely wreaks havoc on your battery, which is strange given it’s just a chat app. Less than an hour using the app is enough to drain a full battery. Hopefully that’s just a bug they can fix.

  • A Great Gateway to an Ultramodern Cultural and Linguistic Adventures

    by JRonah

During my time using this sources of communication with foreign citizens and colleagues, I have never been disappointment with its layout, attributes, or in-app opportunities. It makes me feel so good to have people from so far away contact me out of the blue just to speak with me and learn from me. Widening my academic horizons through exploring foreign lifestyles whilst sharing my own essences and peculiarities of life makes me feel indefatigably fulfilled; while continuing on my erudite life-path.

  • Amazing! But one request

    by 1914Kyle

This app is wonderful. I like it way more than HelloTalk because of the vibrant colors and modern layout. Although, I think the community page should be formatted like HelloTalk where the people are separated by tabs at the top of the screen, of the languages you are learning. I’m studying Chinese and Korean, and there are many more Chinese speakers than Korean speakers on the app, and it makes it very hard to find Korean people to speak to, because there are too many Chinese speakers. That’s my only complaint, otherwise, very amazing app. 감사합니다~!

  • This app has changed my life

    by judahorion

This app is brilliant. It’s beautiful. It’s helpful. It’s the closest thing to immersion many of us will have. Learning Spanish was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and this app helped me become fluent by connecting me to native speakers across the globe with whom I can speak to at any time. The built in correction function, translate function, and comment function are smart, and there is even a tutor section if you want more direct formal learning. This app is amazing. Thank you developers!

  • I love it!!

    by Dorothy Fidler

I have been using Tandem for about 3 months now and I love it! I don’t pay for the membership, but I still have unlimited language learning opportunities through other users. I can ask natives questions about their language and teach them about English. You can send audio messages to learn pronunciation. And it’s so fun and easy to chat or call internationally! The worst part is having to deal with different time zones! 😂 as I keep learning languages, I’m excited to progress in my communication with natives ^^ ❤️❤️❤️

  • Like G-rated Tinder but for language learners, lol

    by sull-dawg

I like the concept of meeting people from around the world and getting to know them while helping each other learn a new language. I downloaded the app today and have already started several fun conversations with people from halfway across the globe. So far no serious complaints. Maybe only complaint would be the ads, but that is a nuisance in every app these days if you want it to still be free. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Messaging Problems

    by Room a

I only have one problem with this app but it’s a fairly big one. There seems to be some kind of sync issue whereby a delay occurs in sending or receiving text messages. Sometimes the delay is minutes, other times it’s hours. Other than that it’s a usable app and there are quite a few people who are actually serious about language learning. Devs, please fix the messaging bug; I’ve read reviews from others with the same issue.

  • Good app, but it needs more filters

    by Star girl !!

I love this app so much, it really helped me to learn the language I wanted, but from today something in the app changed and almost anyone with any language showed up on the community which wasn’t related to the language that I speak or learn! And I also got some messages from people with different language goals! I mean if there was a filter to choose which (countries/languages) do we want our profiles to be shown to, would’ve been absolutely great.

  • Good app, but...

    by turkeylover7777

It is a very good app. But has a tendency of not showing earlier messages in the same chat. The messages are still kept on their servers, but the app can randomly chose a date in a chat after which earlier messages won’t show. Once it happens that erroneous date is considered the beginning of your chat. And you won’t see any earlier messages whatsoever. Very frustrating! The issue is systematic. I installed the app on different devices. Nothing improved: on all devices, chats stop at exactly same dates the app arbitrarily chose prior. So the problem is on back end, not only the app itself. Deleting, re-installing won’t help. App creators told me to reinstall with a new update. I have already updated the app twice to the latest version. Nothing helped 😭

  • Really serious

    by Lily Drimm

I really love that app because people here are actually here to learn languages and not trying to date or what.. I’ve seen that on a other platform and it’s just really tiring. Here, I can make actual friend with whom I can exchange about languages! (I gave five stars however I think the distance between normal and premium is a bit too close, there’s a lot of things that aren’t really premium-worthy I think...)

  • A Fine Language Exchange App

    by CycleWalla

Tandem allows users to communicate freely with partners, and and encourages a review of the language exchange session. I have enjoyed communication with my colleagues, who seem to be very open to conversation across languages. The voice message facility is quite good. The live phone conversation is not as good, but the live video conversation option seems to be ill suited for speaking with a partner in Russia. Otherwise, the text editing and correction facility is good.

  • A learning community

    by C. S. Neto

I enjoy using this app because of the community aspect of it. One feels part of a village where every neighbor is on a mission to improve themselves linguistically, and that makes the interactions even more relevant and engaging. One can read a language book, but one must also be immersed in conversations with foreigners who are native speakers of the language one is trying to learn, and the Tandem community provides just that. C’est genial!

  • Amazing app

    by Dsaszasaza

My favorite language exchange app. It has many helpful features and lots of people to practice is. The only problem, there are periods of time when no one is sending me any messages, and then suddenly there dozen of people trying to talk to me at the same time. I can’t respond to everyone and sometimes miss out on great language exchange partners. It would be great if people messaging me could somehow be distributed.

  • Great app, but needs some work.

    by Lauren Rausch

I’ve met many great people on this app and have had amazing conversations!! But it’s almost impossible to find the people you were talking to because they don’t separate new conversation requests and conversations you are already having. They need a system kind of like Facebook or something so it separates the people into two separation places. This would make the app 10x better and a lot more user friendly!

  • Great Language App

    by N.DR8KE

I love the interface and how clean it is. I’ve been using the app religiously to talk to people from all over the world since I downloaded it two weeks ago. Which has also been a problem because it’s hard to organize all of those conversations. There should be a way to filter your conversations by the ones you speak more frequently with and by the ones you have a tandem with. Just a thought.

  • I love this app.

    by YukiHarudoni13

I’ve been learning Japanese and Tandem has been a great help. I love this app and the people on it. It is a great way to immerse yourself digitally and also fix grammatical errors. Since you are talking to a real person, time zones may be an issue (Japan is 16 hours ahead of Arizona, so me and my friend often stay up late to talk to each other). However, since it is a living, breathing person, it is to be expected.

  • Great way to learn a new language

    by Mykie222

I love Tandem. Ive been brushing up my French in preparation for a trip and it has definitely given me more confidence in my speaking. Once you find a great or a few great folx to talk to, it’s really nice. I also love the different tools on tandem like the translator and correction tool. This makes learning a language really fun and more interactive. I’ll be using this app to learn other languages... as soon as I get French down pat. Lol

  • Great for video calls, not so great for texting

    by Gradmigo

It really needs a search though messages functionality. I understand that main purpose of the app is video chats, but texting is much more convenient and can be done much more regularly, especially with people from different time zones. And searching through messages can be such a pain. Another nice thing to add can be some built in dictionary in which you can add new words and phrases.

  • Great app with room for improvements

    by Alvzla

I’m addicted to this app. It has reinforced my desire to keep learning other languages while speaking to real people and getting to practice and teach what you know. Nevertheless, there’s room for improvement: -The app won’t let you write references for other users whenever you want. -If you don’t connect your FB account at first, you won’t be able to do it afterwards. -You are not able to look for people on your own, it display a list of users and you can take your conversations from there. -It doesn’t allow you to add your location manually. The list of opportunities goes on, but it works perfectly for what is meant for. I’m confident the app developers will keep improving the UX and will make better versions in the near future.

  • Great Idea but... (personal opinion)

    by TyWala

This app is amazing. My only qualm is the fact that I get so many messages. It can be overwhelming. If there is a feature that allows you to mute conversations, that would be lovely! Other than that, I really do believe tandem has been a great gateway to improve my language skills. You’re able to converse and practice what you’ve learned so far. You will also continue to learn as you chat with new people.

  • Just what you need

    by Xyntro

Very nice, no bugs. Audio quality is determined by your mic, not the app. It’s very easy and fast to connect with people and start chatting. It would be nice to archive conversations, but at least the most active ones are presented first. The app has formulated conversation starters which are often accidentally misused and abused by non-English speakers. These need to be removed or have translations to other languages so people know what they are saying.

  • Please change some features.

I normally don’t write reviews but I do really like this app. However, I came on here to say that there needs to be a feature where you can choose which countries people are able to connect to you from. I received way too may unsolicited messages from people in countries where the language I was learning isn’t even spoken. I didn’t feel too safe because of this.

  • This App is lit, fam

    by Mackimo

It's great. You just make a profile in 5 minutes and immediately start finding neat people who speak the language you want to learn and also want to learn your language, which (since you're reading this) must be English. and y'all just speak back and forth in each other's languages and basically proofread each other.

  • Great App!

    by BrittaMenzel

This app has been a huge help to my husband and me with our language learning goals. We have made many friends who we will stay in contact with for years to come. My only complaint is that sometimes when it’s super busy and a lot of people are using the app it slows down or crashes, but that has only happened to us a couple of times in about 6 months of using the app.

  • Recommend for you

    by Miss DSA

This app is good for those who wants to improve knowledge in any language. Developers are good people! It’s not like you need pay money to be able to learn something (e.g. you can set many languages to study and it’s free, you don’t need vip membership)! Here some billing things but not so much and they don’t bother you! I highly recommend you to download it!

  • I like this app But why

    by Maroc maroco

    I have been using this app for almost two months from now, i just checked my dms and went back to check some others, my home page is completely empty, there is no single persons profile on the wall!! I changed the filters as it asked me but it didn't work!!! I hope it's a technical problem ;-;

  • Best App Ever

    by Maciasmelmelanie

I’ve had this app for such a long time. This is probably one of the best apps out there. It’s so easy and fun to find language exchange partners! 😀 I made a friend from Japan and we became so close that we ended up meeting in real life!!!!! This app helps you get closer with different cultures and you get to meet friends from different countries! I recommend this app highly! So download it now!

  • LOVE this app, just needs one improvement..

    by Jj12021996

This app is really cool. I can talk to whoever I want from any part of the world. The only problem I’m having is that whenever I log on, and people see that I’m online, I start getting tons of new messages (when I first made my account, I got at least 50). I wish there was a way to stop new incoming messages if you already talk to a few people on a daily basis.

  • Location Services

    by b00mb00mb33pb44p

My location is way off and it’s not my phone it’s the app and i just wanted you guys to know b/c I’m sure others have the same problem. I think it would also be cool if your coders could do something like what instagram used to have, so w Tandem after talking to ppl youd create a map showing the connections you’ve made

  • iPhone 11x max issue

    by hngrlvn

If the app is on when I lose interest connection, I have to delete and reinstall the app again. It locks up, and even next day, doesn’t work. However I still think it’s the best app to meet, chat with people around the world. It is great for learning not only a new language, also traditions, history, and social nuances.

  • Great app, little buggy though

    by Paquistio

Great app to make friends across the world and learn a new language. The only downside is that the app is a little finicky and sometimes shows when you’ve received a message. Also I’ve noticed my phone get unusually warm when I use this app. I wish there was a way to only purchase an add free experience, but that’s only is available with their subscription plans.

  • It’s not fair... 😞😔

    by D3n153-36

Look, I just downloaded the app and I just got done typing my email. Right after I got done putting my Birthday it immediately saids that you have to 14. Look guys when I first this app I knew had to be 13 or something so had to force myself waiting another year so can be old enough to use this app. I’m only 13 and I don’t want to wait another year just use this app... . I really, really want to learn Chinese and Spanish. Please do something about it.. 😞😞😞😞

  • App kept freezing on 3rd day

    by Shachimitsu

I really wanted to give Tandem a high rating , the interface is good, setting up a profile is easy, browsing profiles of tutors and learners is fun, the chat functions are engaging and from the first day I was able to find people to communicate with, on the third day the app started freezing. I tried closing the app then reopening it several times, I tried restarting my phone, but to no avail. I can no longer do any of the functions; I can’t even scroll. As soon as the app starts I have approximately 3 seconds before it freezes on me. Tandem team, please help me resolve this issue, I don’t want to cut my Tandem Journey short due to this technicality.

  • One day 5 stars

    by Mikeivystandsup

Look I don’t know what kind a weird memorization drills or flashcards you guys are using but there is no substitute for human interaction when it comes to talking in this thing but wasn’t me away with its ability to teach me so much in one day I highly recommend it and I really recommend you paying for the pro version. Exactly what I needed.

  • Blown Away

    by Brigsy22

This is the first time I’ve ever written a review for an app because of how happy I was. Honestly super impressed with this set up. It’s very similar to a Facebook Messenger set up but with some added tools that make it super useful for learning! Plus everyone on here wants to learn something and everyone is happy to help! Really impressed. 10/10 recommend

  • I love Tandem

    by MikeAndersonWA

I love this app on my iPhone, however on the iPad it is incredibly limited by the simple lack of ability to use it in landscape mode. I was super excited when I saw this app available on iPad, because I’d much rather type messages to people on here instead of on my phone due to the keyboard case, however the keyboard case only works in landscape mode, thus rendering that useless. I don’t know a single person who enjoys typing on an iPad in portrait mode.

  • Sleek app and real people

    by Seatealover

I've never used another app like this before, but I think it's crazy that I'm able to meet others around the globe who also want to learn a language. This has connected me to several others who are interested in doing language exchanges and I'm excited about the possibilities that lie ahead with Tandem :-)

  • Great app; but could be improved.

    by Cupcakepanda97

I’ve just got it today and already I love it! However the only issue I have with it is that the translated messages are...very grammatically incorrect and sometimes hard to understand because of it. I think that if you could improve how well the texts are translated then this app could be perfect. Overall it’s incredible so far!

  • Need MORE users!

    by zizhguo

It is a good APP there’s no doubt about it, but why there are so less people that every time I scroll down the user list and it’s just those faces showed up again and again. To developers, you might want to make it the better quality to attract new users and take another promotion strategy. Come on, I really like this APP, and I don’t want it just slowly dies.

  • Best way to learn another language!

    by vega-situ

The people I’ve met through Tandem are pretty awesome! You learn together by exchanging words, sharing stories, and whatnot. I also want to commend Tandem’s customer service, they are awesome! They were able to retrieve my account when I could not retrieve it. Absolutely helpful and prompt response. Thank you, Tandem!

  • Fun

    by ️Yukiko

It’s fun to learn languages from people your age from all around the world. They’re natives so you can ask them about slangs and abbreviations that most teachers don’t know. Although very easy to move about, I find it difficult to start or continue the conversation. They are not very outgoing and often don’t reply but maybe that’s just me. Great app for learning though\^_^/

  • Great for meeting people!

    by Poppyninja

This is an awesome app! Within a few hours I was able to have several conversations with people from all over the French speaking world! The people on this app have been screened so there’s no spam or creepy people and the conversations you have are genuinely conducive to language learning!

  • Good, not great

    by walesmb

I love this app except for the fact that it only allows a few translations per day. When lee info a new language, translation is necessary. This app only allows a few translations within a 24 hour period. That means having to turn to other apps to translate what people are saying to you. It gets very frustrating. Aside from that, the app is great.

  • Best app!

    by Shonniek

So far i like this app a lot! As soon as I made my profile, I immediately started getting messages. I have had this app for less than 24 hrs and i have already spoken to so many people in English and Spanish. It’s easy to use and i like that you send voice messages and even video call.

  • Love it but tends to freeze up

    by Joanam5623

I love the app, I love how I can connect with people, send messages and do audio messages to practice pronunciation and conversations, the only downside is I’ve been having issues with it sort of freezing and there have been a few days where I couldn’t access the app even when I’m connected to my WiFi.

  • Love it!!!

    by Tiana🦄

Yes there are somethings that could be slightly improved but whatever! Tandem is my favorite app, i have made so many new friends and we have taught each other so many new things! You can video or audio call, and of course text... the people are kind and fun, there is so much to learn!

  • My eyes, please! Dark Mode

    by nickviewtime

This is the very best app out there to learn new languages with strangers. Of course, there are games, and a lot of features but it's missing most important one; dark mode. Dark Mode is a most have, especially for Tandem Pro Members like me. We gladly pay for a better experience. As a Tandem Pro Member, I am requesting Dark Mode. Protect my eyes so that I can keep using Tandem and discovering new cultures, souls, and countries. I know you can do it.

  • Language Exchange and Building Friendships

    by MeridianHawke

I love this app! I have found many new friends and everyone is so nice and helpful. It’s so much easier to learn from native speakers and it’s a great bond to help each other learn. I have tried other apps similar to this one but this one is my favorite. The community is exquisite!

  • I think it needs an update.

    by Ndcl00

This is an overall great app and I’ve already met so many people who are all so nice! I love the correction system for when you make mistakes and the translation works amazingly, but I’m not getting notifications even though the push notifications are on and people are not receiving my messages.

  • Good app so far

    by HeJabated

One night I made conversation with two people and both of the conversations disappeared the next day. I had another separate conversation with a third person and that one was still there the next day. Is that a bug or something that the app is supposed to do? Thanks, the app is great so far besides this problem.

  • ❤️

    by MidnightDani

I love this app. Being able to speak to people in my target languages has helped me a lot. I also really like that you are anonymous. When you talk to people they only know what you tell them so there isn’t any fear if meeting creeps. You can just block them. Excellent safe way to talk to natives!

  • !!!

    by Detective Vu

I love this app and I’ve only had it for 3 days! But I downloaded this on my iPad and want to transfer it to my phone, but I forgot my password. I wish you could change your email and password... it would make it so much better! Anyways I still love it, I just wish I could change the email I used and password...

  • Some Features don't need to be In-App Purchases

    by SoCal_Travie

Such as unlimited translations many language learners such as myself use Google translate or some other free service when not in close proximity to a secondary language dictionary. All other aspects of the program are awesome though.

  • Tandem

    by TandemUser

I think this app is great! It is essential to use the language you are learning or you will lose it. I like how on this app you can learn more than one language for free. Also you can post pictures on your profile sharing your culture which I like too.

  • Serendipity

    by ShanaShine

I was not expecting much so I was really surprised! This site is so well thought out and fun to use. I have already met a couple friends which I was not expecting at all. I am absolutely happy with this app and I would encourage you to do yourself a favor and try it.

  • I like the app so far but....

    by Kairi81

I downloaded this app and have been enjoying the overall experience of it BUT it is incredibly buggy for me. It crashes and freezes CONSTANTLY to the point it’s turned unusable. I’ve also had quite a few people tell me they can’t actually see my messages even though they did receive my texts.

  • Great Language Learning App

    by Scoot_Jansen

This is a must-download if you are serious about learning a new language. You learn so much faster when conversing with native speakers. I only don’t give it 5 stars because there is no landscape functionality. I would love to be able to use my iPad and keyboard to write messages.

I love this app for learning a language it truly is a masterpiece, but to be completely honest the amount of random men in my inbox moments after I joined was a little scary, they all wanted to know where I lived and came onto me in ways that I felt uncomfortable. I just want to learn German.

  • Great app!

    by SethRi0t

I’ve had this app for about 3 months now! If you are learning a new language, this app is a must have. I’ve met so many good people and a few whom I think I’ll be friends with for life! I hope everyone’s experiences can be as great as mine have been!

  • Freezes on launch a lot

    by Zappernan

This app is an amazing way to learn through others. It’s great to communicate with outgoing individuals and learn language in a casual way. One error on the apphas been addressed in an update but still hasn’t been fixed yet. The app freezes when it launches and that makes it frustrating to talk to my new friends.

  • I love it!

    by Fab flab

This is one of the best apps for language learning. Everyone here is so nice and wonderful. I'm love speaking in different languages and making friends from all around the world. Some sites like this are sketchy but this is so legit! You can talk to anyone your age, it's perfect!

    by zBen Ctarik

  • Best App to learn a language

    by Mellzzzzzzzzzzzz

This app is great with linking you to tutors as well as finding native speakers to chat with. Occasionally you will run into a random perv asking you for nudes BUT for the most part, most people are here to learn.

  • I love it

  • Not bad

    by shianna19

So far, so good. But I think the more you chat, the slower the app gets. So have a notebook so you can write the details from your conversations and then erase you messages frequently to keep it from slowing down. I think that might work.

This app is awesome. You can connect with local speakers and start learning fast.

  • Love it !

    by Starrr_rrrrrrrrr

I love this app it’s such a great way to practice the language you are learning. I would definitely recommend it to everyone. You not only learn but you make friends !

  • Good App

    by Mast3r Click3r

  • !!!

    by Detective Vu

I love this app and I’ve only had it for 3 days! But I downloaded this on my iPad and want to transfer it to my phone, but I forgot my password. I wish you could change your email and password... it would make it so much better! Anyways I still love it, I just wish I could change the email I used and password...

  • Enjoyable, but needs improvement

    by Lucy Eyelsbarrow

I just downloaded this app today. I am enjoying it, but the number of requests is overwhelming. There should definitely be a way to filter out requests more. I’ve filtered by age and requested only people of the same gender, but before I figured that out I got 50 requests in under an hour. I think I’ll enjoy the app in the long run, but it’s frustrating that there aren’t ways to limit the type of contact more, and that people can message you regardless of if they fit what you’re looking for (many messages from people who aren’t native or fluent in my target language, which is fine if I’m just there to teach English, but my goal is to learn AND teach with the same partner, so even though I’m sure they are lovely people, I would rather not be getting so many messages from people who don’t even fit what I’m looking for). It’s just a little overwhelming, the point was to develop meaningful language connections, so it is a little frustrating that it’s so difficult to do that between constantly filtering new messages and reading all the profiles to see who fits, etc. In general, though, it’s an awesome concept, and I’m excited to use it more in the future and can’t wait to see what kind of improvements they make over time, and I like that they do filter the people they let use it. I definitely got fewer creepy requests than I expected considering that most social apps have a lot of people with ulterior motives and most of the people contacting me are actually there to learn and speak about language.

  • Great app!

    by TeslaJunge

I love this app! It’s helped me with my languages, and I’ve met some great people on it :) if you’re learning a language get this app. It works great, except for my notifications, which are a little broken for me (I don’t get any, which can be bad sometimes😬)

  • Good but..

    by _Tasha_12_

Every time i send a message it will not go through or it takes a while to send. It is not my wifi or connection, its the app. Ive re installed the app many times but this problem continues to be an issue. This is not good because i cannot communicate regularly at all. Please fix this issue.

  • Love this!

    by audreyEA

This is a really good app! I love it because it connects me to real people. I suggest having multiple conversations at once to get the most out of it. But it is sometimes hard to get a conversation going. I love this!

  • It’s so helpful

    by kaylollipop

This app is really helping me learn Italian by having and holding real conversations with real people. I personally love it.

  • 3/5. Stick to HelloTalk.

    by Babaju2

I’ve been playing around with Tandem for a few days and here’s my detailed take on it: The good... I really like being able to search by topic and by age, or toggle “my gender only.” There is also a few days long screening process so they apparently only let you join if you’re serious about language learning. Unlike HelloTalk, it actually even has a video chat feature which would be super useful because you can have a real conversation with someone that way. So, the features makes it come off as a serious language exchange app with a lot of ways to find an ideal partner. It definitely has potential. Now for the problems... I used the free 1 week pro trial, and when I opted out of it, maybe I pressed something(?), but I got charged $38 USD for a 1 year subscription. It seems most likely that it defaults you to a 1 year subscription after the trial ends. I had to contact Apple and get a refund and cancel the subscription. I saw other similar reviews that took note of this problem. It needs to be fixed. That was frustrating. I have a professional looking profile and messaged ~100 “active” users a nice inquiring introduction message. Only ~8 actually replied *at all*, and most of those who replied did so with short one word answers to everything I said and did not try to correct my errors either. So much for language exchange. I had just one good conversation with someone. Otherwise, it felt like a big waste of time. Hell, if having a text chat is this impossible, I can’t imagine trying to find someone to have a phonecall or video chat with! I see this as an issue because the ‘screening’ process or whatever is inadequate if it’s so difficult to find people who are willing to talk. It actually doesn’t seem to do anything positive. There are a lot of people waitlisted from even using the app for weeks on end, yet hardly anyone who’s “active” really wants to talk. It seems a good idea on paper, but honestly the developers should either rethink the screening process or just remove it. Because of the long screening process, the number of available users is limited. Thus, there are not many potential language exchange partners on Tandem. However, I had expected the screening to make it likely that the people I tried to talk to would be more serious about language learning. I was wrong. I can find a serious partner much more easily (although it’s still difficult) on HelloTalk simply due to the sheer number advantage and many who post ‘moments.’ So, I will probably stick to HelloTalk.

  • Great app!

    by SethRi0t

I’ve had this app for about 3 months now! If you are learning a new language, this app is a must have. I’ve met so many good people and a few whom I think I’ll be friends with for life! I hope everyone’s experiences can be as great as mine have been!

  • Banned

    by let me learn!

I was banned from the app for an unknown random reason . I hope the app management will get in touch to clarify. I hope it’s not a discriminative behavior!

Of course this is a nice software. But I think here have some ideas for you guys. You guys can add Sth like personal blog like Facebook or Twitter. These things can arrow users post their photos or videos on it.

  • Excellent learning app!

Practice your language skills with real people. Very nice people. Enjoy!

  • Need to fix notifications not showing

by Mena B (Sabah El Kheir)

Great app! I like using it. But the notifications do not pop up. I tried to reinstall the app several times and it doesn’t work. Would give 5 if it wasn’t for this dumb mistake

  • Very well!

    by Klt$100rocks

This app has so far been very well! Everyone is very helpful and kind!

  • Great!

    by ErikaMoze

This app has been great so far! I’m trying to learn Chinese after having lived in China and everyone is so eager to help. I love the audio feature, it’s come in handy a lot, and I’ve made dozens of friends using it! My only complaint is that the calling connection is super unstable.

Lol

  • A review

I love this, it’s so much fun talking to people and learning with them.

  • Nice!

    by ahs876

Really good app! I love it so far. The only issue I have with it isn't the apps fault at all, but a lot of people treat this like a dating website, which isn't fun, but past that I love it.

I was not expecting much so I was really surprised! This site is so well thought out and fun to use. I have already met a couple friends which I was not expecting at all. I am absolutely happy with this app and I would encourage you to do yourself a favor and try it.

  • Fantastic

It’s really More than my expectation !!

  • Tandem

    by TandemUser

I think this app is great! It is essential to use the language you are learning or you will lose it. I like how on this app you can learn more than one language for free. Also you can post pictures on your profile sharing your culture which I like too.

Your app keeps freezing on iPhone X as soon as personal hotspot is connected and disconnected. Other than that. The app is very good.
