  • Good planning CCD camera view Dec 5, 2018

    By romadave
I am impressed at being able to combine my CCD camera view and telescope optics to get a FOV. As I zoom in on a target, the FOV maintains aspect ratio to the target. I’ve checked a few and indeed, the size of the object matches what I’ve gotten on my CCD sensor. This is very handy for planning because some targets would be too big or small for my FOV so I can find a more suitable subject for a photo. App has very good graphics compared to others I’ve used and the size and orientation look correct.

My daughter wanted a simple app to help her use the telescope she got for Christmas. This isn’t it; it’s much more complicated than we were expecting. I suppose it works, and if you’re a professional astronomer it would make sense. I’m not sure though, because we don’t understand the majority of the features. For peasants like us, the compass feature is all we need, and it wasn’t easy to find, as it’s on a scroll at the bottom. We needed “sky for dummies.” After about an hour into messing with this complicated app, we found Venus on the app and then saw it in the sky, and a little 8 year old was really excited about it. So there’s a win.

Really pleased with this app. It's helpful in finding objects in the sky and provides a wealth of info on quite a number of them. Wish the image and info databases could be expanded by an in-app purchase. I don't use this to control my telescope so I have no need to upgrade to Pro. It does hang once in a while but that seems to be due to my device being overdue for a restart. Many thumbs up!!!

This could be great APP except for some limitations. The positive is, it has a great display of the sky with many helpful tools. One of the tools I like is being able to save my DSO viewed objects. The however is that it is very difficult to acquire a clean link between the iPad and the Celestron Nexstar Evolution mount. With WiFi. With having WiFi as the only available link it becomes useless in a populated area with 2 or more fellow star gazers also using wifi. If they could update the APP to allow a mini USB connection passing thru the Hand Controller. There is another App that I stumbled across That utilized this connection. It uses a mini USB cable that connects to the HC and passes the commands onto the mount. There is also a path for EQ mounts where the connection is direct, bypassing the HC. Even though the APP is free it does not come up to the quality of the user interface and display SkySafari. One thing I said earlier is the ability to save your viewing history and printing out a hard copy. If this app incorporated a USB connection it would have a 6 plus star rating.

I have just installed SkySafari 6 Plus on my Andriod tablet. It looks good so far I have been going over yu tube videos to get a run down on how to get the most out of it. The one thing that I have noticed mine has not got the advanced search window, any reason for this? I have not had it on long enough to give a fair review. Robert Aust'
  • Love the app but for one little hiccup Jan 3, 2021

I absolutely love this app. I’ve used just about every version that’s been released, and I’m very happy with it. That said, I also love the calendar function that shows me the upcoming events but touching the button to “VIEW” the event on the map won’t work. I hope it’s fixed soon, and I know for people who are newer to astronomy it would really help them find things more quickly.

Very impressed with this upgrade. I had the free version of this before and thought it was okay, nothing special. This version really does everything. I do my image planning and future projects with it. Only reason it's getting 4 stars is that I can't get the laptop version going. It keeps saying that I need the 6 plus version to get in. Which is what I have. Other than that it does everything I need.

I love this app but have been e experiencing a minor issue. I'll be looking at a particular constellation or other object on the map, when suddenly the app switches to sky-scan mode. I use this app mainly for identifying the stars in my photos, so I almost never use sky-scan. Is there a way to temporarily disable it?

This app is smooth and powerful. I will like learning how to use this great software. During my first session SkySafari alerted me to an HST pass. My ten-year-old observing partner and I enjoyed watching the low-angle pass on my iPhone almost as much as we would have liked directly observing the orbiting observatory. Tonight I loaded a second copy of this app on my iPad and watched my niece load another copy on her iPhone. It still works great!

I’ve been using SkySafari + for years. I love that such a powerful App lives on my phone so I can refer to it anytime at home or in the field. It works great to control my Goto telescope for observing and astrophotography, and functions perfectly in remote places where there is no cell coverage. Most excellent for beginners and experienced users a like. Don’t hesitate to get this app!

Useful for GoTo, but makes my One+ 7 pro run slow, app performance not good and kills battery fast when running. No other apps do this. Free version did not have this issue. Also, gives notifications for satellites despite being disabled in both the app and Android settings, kinda annoying since I dont care when ISS or HST are rising. Can't give more than two stars in it's current form due to the performance issues, given the $15 price. Also, wants to charge me to install on 2nd device, not fair
  • Good app. Confusing reason for update. Jun 27, 2018

    By William Winters
This business model of making a new version as a new app, asking users to repurchase it, and removing the old version from the store is confusing. I uninstalled my previous version to install the new version, after being prompted to download the new version from within the app. I realized after installing the new version that features had been removed, and that I needed to purchase this “plus” version to re-enable the features I lost. I couldn’t find the previous version in the App Store, so I just paid for this. The developer has pointed out that the old version can still be downloaded from the App Store in the previously purchased section of my account. Thanks.

Edited: Okay to good. A few suggestions: separate lm settings for asteroids-comets vs satellites; folders, searching and sorting in observing lists; addition of major eclipses and occultations predictions; addition of major variable stars light curve data; more active support. PS: ES iEXOS mounts are not in database. Lack of communication and app development. Edited - nonresponse from the developers continues. Edited DEC 2020: Frequent need for Play Store or Service for license is a privacy violation. 1/6/21: The app often complaints about license, as my Play Store is turned off and Play Service is blocked by firewall by default. This is a bug report, not a feature request.

  • The best app for stargazing and more Dec 10, 2020

    By Fd133
Don’t waste your money on any other app. Spend the money on this app and you will not be disappointed. It is very good, though not perfect, at providing accurate information regarding the piece of sky at which your device is aimed. It does suffer the occasional hiccup with detecting the compass heading that your device is pointing, but that is unavoidable.
  • Jan 30, 2021

Absolutely worth it for the ability to flip the starmap so that it matches what you see on a reflector telescope. Then you add the extra stars that are not in the free version and star hopping is made so much easier! Not to mention you can add your specific equipment and it will calculate and cast a circle on the map so that it matches what you see in your scope perfectly.
  • Very Detailed! Aug 17, 2020

    By BigRedDest
Having used stargazing apps in the past, both free and paid, this has been one of the easier, more detailed, and user friendly apps. The video tutorials and clearly labeled icons make it super easy to navigate and personalize. I just got my first telescope and this app makes it super easy to locate and observe the night sky!

  • Highly customizable, powerful tool Feb 24, 2021

    By BWV149
I’ve been using Sky Safari for a few years and am delighted by its versatility. It has a wealth of data, including surface maps for all of the planets and many of the moons, and even the thousands of man-made satellites. One of my favorite features is the ability to orbit planets. I used this feature to verify the visuals for a maneuver in The Expanse, and to debunk the fakes that are claimed to be from Perseverance. It’s easy to connect to a telescope mount with inexpensive hardware. I would like to see a more powerful mode for moving the mount that simulates alt/az motion on an equatorial mount, as well as easier navigation to points in the sky—right now that only works if you have a target in the app’s database I would love to see the ability to add objects. Great workhorse!
  • Glitch Jun 9, 2019

    By Davexyzzyx
Sky safari 6 plus seems to have a glitch. The setting for horizon and sky does not work when you show grid with equatorial coordinates. So you set horizon and sky for “opaque” or anything else and you get what you expect with grid set to horizon, but not with any of the other 3 coordinate systems. It used to work and then suddenly stopped a few weeks ago. Very annoying. This works fine on the pro version on my mac.

I enjoy the Sky Safari Plus and the Free Sky Safari apps. One problem. There is no longer connection to Sky Week. To contact anyone regarding the issue, you are sent to an off site that simply doesn’t work to get help. I’m hoping someone will see the problem and fix it. It’s been down since January 2020.

This app is amazing visually and I love that you can point to two stars and it will tell you the distance those stars are from each other that is awesome. But I can not get app to work well enough with my 5 se and skyq-link when it does sync right it seems to always take the longest route to an object and the controls are not good either to many icons. I see a lot of bad ratings for the Celestron sky portal app but it works great for me.
