After having used the “family” of Sky Safari apps, I am convinced these are the best star and space observation apps on the market (App Store). The Sky Safari 6 plus is full of features, facts, and lots of “cool toys” to keep an individual busy for a long time learning our solar system (and beyond). I had a little problem with a download recently but it was quickly remedied with the recent download. If you’re at all interested in observing or learning the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies, I highly recommend this app.

Simply the best sky simulation for stargazers period! I use it for planning my observing, choosing field of view and composing astrophotos, and controlling my telescope mount (GOTO and pointing). Absolutely beautiful and accurate sky renderings including Jupiter's red spot and moons! A joy to use.

My daughter wanted a simple app to help her use the telescope she got for Christmas. This isn’t it; it’s much more complicated than we were expecting. I suppose it works, and if you’re a professional astronomer it would make sense. I’m not sure though, because we don’t understand the majority of the features. For peasants like us, the compass feature is all we need, and it wasn’t easy to find, as it’s on a scroll at the bottom. We needed “sky for dummies.” After about an hour into messing with this complicated app, we found Venus on the app and then saw it in the sky, and a little 8 year old was really excited about it. So there’s a win.

So far it is great. I gave it 4 stars because I have not been able to get out and see how it works controlling my Nexstar 9.25. The best planetary app I have so far.

This could be great APP except for some limitations. The positive is, it has a great display of the sky with many helpful tools. One of the tools I like is being able to save my DSO viewed objects. The however is that it is very difficult to acquire a clean link between the iPad and the Celestron Nexstar Evolution mount. With WiFi. With having WiFi as the only available link it becomes useless in a populated area with 2 or more fellow star gazers also using wifi. If they could update the APP to allow a mini USB connection passing thru the Hand Controller. There is another App that I stumbled across That utilized this connection. It uses a mini USB cable that connects to the HC and passes the commands onto the mount. There is also a path for EQ mounts where the connection is direct, bypassing the HC. Even though the APP is free it does not come up to the quality of the user interface and display SkySafari. One thing I said earlier is the ability to save your viewing history and printing out a hard copy. If this app incorporated a USB connection it would have a 6 plus star rating.
  • Good planning CCD camera view Dec 5, 2018

    By romadave
I am impressed at being able to combine my CCD camera view and telescope optics to get a FOV. As I zoom in on a target, the FOV maintains aspect ratio to the target. I’ve checked a few and indeed, the size of the object matches what I’ve gotten on my CCD sensor. This is very handy for planning because some targets would be too big or small for my FOV so I can find a more suitable subject for a photo. App has very good graphics compared to others I’ve used and the size and orientation look correct.

Great app when it works but it has a serious flaw. File downloads can popup when you open the app. They are ultra slow (hours, days), the progress bar doesn't work, you can't stop or delay the download and ,accordingly, you are locked out of the app until the download finishes. Keep Stellaruim as a backup.
  • Great BUT needs feature Nov 28, 2021

I use this app all the time but found one issue. When looking at the entire sky mag limit is set to something reasonable like 7, but once you zoom in, ie: telescope fov, the mag limit SHOULD change to the selected telescope. I observe variable stars and when I move to a variable its really difficult to identify the variable when I zoom in because most of the stars are missing. If I change the star magnitude limit, when I zoom out again the sky is filled with stars. Magnitude limit should be set by telescope+eyepiece and fov reticle combination.

I enjoy the app and appreciate the extra data you can get when you get more information on a sky object. The calendar of items to look for is really helpful!! Update: my app is now stuck in an endless loop trying to download 11 files. Please send out a fix!

  • well, it worked once May 14, 2021

i purchased this for both iPasOS and MacOS and support is non-existent, referring me to forums where the most recent posts are a year old. on April 23 i used Sky Safari Plus (iPadOS) for the first time to control my Celestron NexStar 6se, and all worked fine. we then had rain for weeks, and on May 11 i tried to use it and it connected fine but after many failed alignment attempts (not me, the stars were aligned with the reticle in my ASI294mc) i gave up. last night, May 13, it wouldn’t even connect, gave the Connection Failure dialog box multiple times, even after completely powering off the scope and quitting/restarting the app. i then immediately started up Celestron Sky Portal and it not only connected, but alignment was perfect the first time. i tried again this morning to connect via Sky Safari Plus on both iPad Pro and iPhone 12 mini, with Connection Failure again. useless investment.

This business model of making a new version as a new app, asking users to repurchase it, and removing the old version from the store is confusing. I uninstalled my previous version to install the new version, after being prompted to download the new version from within the app. I realized after installing the new version that features had been removed, and that I needed to purchase this “plus” version to re-enable the features I lost. I couldn’t find the previous version in the App Store, so I just paid for this. The developer has pointed out that the old version can still be downloaded from the App Store in the previously purchased section of my account. Thanks.

Plus version does not connect to skywatcher synscan using Android. SynScan works but not Sky safari 6 plus. Wasted 3 hours trying to configure poor instructions. Frustrating app. Their website is broken, can't even sign in to the forums. Service is awful. They took 16 uds and have no support.

Paying this much for an app you would not expect to get spammed to upgrade every day, but you do. Each new day you must dismiss an ad for the pro version. There is no way to opt out, so you just have to deal with it. If I could get a refund I would, but they didn't start this when the app was newly downloaded. Very scummy behavior. The app itself is decent and has some nice features.

  • Love the app but for one little hiccup Jan 3, 2021

    By SippinZin
I absolutely love this app. I’ve used just about every version that’s been released, and I’m very happy with it. That said, I also love the calendar function that shows me the upcoming events but touching the button to “VIEW” the event on the map won’t work. I hope it’s fixed soon, and I know for people who are newer to astronomy it would really help them find things more quickly.

Very impressed with this upgrade. I had the free version of this before and thought it was okay, nothing special. This version really does everything. I do my image planning and future projects with it. Only reason it's getting 4 stars is that I can't get the laptop version going. It keeps saying that I need the 6 plus version to get in. Which is what I have. Other than that it does everything I need.

I love using this app when I'm out with my scope. It really helps me find objects and is great for planning sessions too. A necessary tool in my stargazing tool box for sure and convenient to have on my phone too.

I have tried a lot of mobile planetarium apps and have only gotten the paid upgrades for Sky Safari and one other. The only thing I prefer about the other app is it has a simpler view of the night sky and is easier to pick out the star patterns as my eyes see them.
  • Better Than I Expected! May 21, 2018

This app is smooth and powerful. I will like learning how to use this great software. During my first session SkySafari alerted me to an HST pass. My ten-year-old observing partner and I enjoyed watching the low-angle pass on my iPhone almost as much as we would have liked directly observing the orbiting observatory. Tonight I loaded a second copy of this app on my iPad and watched my niece load another copy on her iPhone. It still works great!

  • Highly customizable, powerful tool Feb 24, 2021

    By BWV149
I’ve been using Sky Safari for a few years and am delighted by its versatility. It has a wealth of data, including surface maps for all of the planets and many of the moons, and even the thousands of man-made satellites. One of my favorite features is the ability to orbit planets. I used this feature to verify the visuals for a maneuver in The Expanse, and to debunk the fakes that are claimed to be from Perseverance. It’s easy to connect to a telescope mount with inexpensive hardware. I would like to see a more powerful mode for moving the mount that simulates alt/az motion on an equatorial mount, as well as easier navigation to points in the sky—right now that only works if you have a target in the app’s database I would love to see the ability to add objects. Great workhorse!

Not bad, night mode is handy, not as good as stellarium web for pc, but on par maybe better than Star Walk
  • Glitch Jun 9, 2019

    By Davexyzzyx
Sky safari 6 plus seems to have a glitch. The setting for horizon and sky does not work when you show grid with equatorial coordinates. So you set horizon and sky for “opaque” or anything else and you get what you expect with grid set to horizon, but not with any of the other 3 coordinate systems. It used to work and then suddenly stopped a few weeks ago. Very annoying. This works fine on the pro version on my mac.

I enjoy the Sky Safari Plus and the Free Sky Safari apps. One problem. There is no longer connection to Sky Week. To contact anyone regarding the issue, you are sent to an off site that simply doesn’t work to get help. I’m hoping someone will see the problem and fix it. It’s been down since January 2020.

This app is amazing visually and I love that you can point to two stars and it will tell you the distance those stars are from each other that is awesome. But I can not get app to work well enough with my 5 se and skyq-link when it does sync right it seems to always take the longest route to an object and the controls are not good either to many icons. I see a lot of bad ratings for the Celestron sky portal app but it works great for me.
