  • Idiosyncratic but usable app— watch out for downgrades Jun 8, 2019

    By Squatbetty
I really hate it when functionality I depend on is suddenly removed. I was standing on the band stand, having said "sure I can do that tune" but when I go to the songs section my buttons to charts and lyrics are suddenly no where to be found, so then the whole band has to wait for me while I find a work around. This is just poor developer etiquette. Smart lists are not a work around— it means I have to make 5 clicks instead of 3 which is already 2 more than it needs to be. Sometimes I end up needing to get to a chart while the song is underway, so the amount of thinking you have to do to find it can really matter. Can't the last used song database come up as the start page? Also save functionality should really be automatic because that is the norm these days.

I used setlists for a long time but it hasn’t been updated in years and gets buggier over time and as OS changes occur so I’ve been searching for an alternative. I tried so many others and none did everything I wanted, or just felt as good as setlists did in its heyday. Having used BandHelper in the past I decided to give this one a go (I rarely need lyrics apps unless it’s a last minute gig or I suddenly have to learn a lot of new songs, otherwise I prefer the more professional approach of knowing the tunes and not having an iPad on stage). This app does everything I need an more and does it elegantly. It just feels great and works. I just input over 100 songs using the built in lyric search and it went smoothly and quickly. Finally, I think I can stop looking for “something better.” To the developer: please a million times, please, never keep this app alive forever! I’m so dependent on it now and I hope I can keep using it for the rest of my life!

Overall I like it but I feel $20 is pretty expensive considering most the features seem to ask you to pay more... Maybe if it was free to start.

I loved the app until the May 2019 update. They took the music and notes icons away from the left side of the screen as well as the slide bar controller for the music. Now, you can only play the song without controls. The icon was moved to the right side of the page. If you want to control the music you must be in one of your set lists. That's BS. If I want to play any of my songs, I shouldn't have to have them in a setlist. The old version let me play and control music from any directory of songs. Update: Got the smart list setup. Works like the original list did and you can pick different options. It just involves another step. I still liked it the old way better, but this is workable. Hence, rating up to 4 stars.

I’ve been a singer for a long time. All different genres and styles. As such I have a boatload of notebooks and 3-ring binders full of song lyrics. This AWESOME app allows me to put all of my lyrics in one place on my iPad. The ease of importing lyrics from the web made it so easy to transfer ALL of my song lyrics to the app. It’s really easy to put lyrics to your own songs in too. I’m involved in a few different projects, and always doing guest spots so I love having the ability to create set lists for each project using the master song list. This is a great app. I no longer have to carry a huge case with books full of lyrics. Worth every penny just for that! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This app is extremely customizable, and is feature rich. It does everything I need and quite a bit more. Seems like the complexity may be off putting to some users, but definitely not for me. I really appreciate how much capability this app has, and it was well worth learning how to use the advanced features. One time I found a bug in the app. I opened a help desk ticket and developer was very responsive. They fixed the bug quickly. Very impressed with this app. Keep up the good work!

How do you sync your database with a new device. I got a new ipad and want to use the new one for my gigs. How do I transfer all the songs over??

If i can only cleanup my database of mistakes doing batch imports of songs and midi presets, AND copy songs and midi presets between databases (for different bands) I would keep using this. I feel like i deserve these simple features for the money I paid. I am used to selecting multiple things in deleting in almost every computer I use. Pretty simple it seems. But no, still not available despite it being pretty obviously needed by others in the forum. Honestly, NOT to bash, just an honest observation, the developer got greedy, it seems. I have seen logical and reasonable feature requests that got answered with something like, “Sorry not available but if you upgrade to bandhelper...” I have switched to OnSong.

I wish I could explain to the app developer how badly I need to be able to view the song in the Songs tab. This functionality helped immensely in rehearsals when I would need to both play and edit songs at the same time as well as add new songs. This one function missing has really made it hard to use the app as there are no work around that are as quick and easy as it used to be. I’ve been told to use the Smart Lists but they don’t work nearly as simply and quickly. I’d be happy to discuss why this doesn’t work with the app developer if they’re interested.

My purpose to purchase this app that I can share my screen/music chart to all musician while playing on stage but the connectivity is really bad. When I open song/chart from the host iPad p, it takes too long to show change on the follower iPads. The test was to put 2 iPads side by side. To test putting away 5-10 ft then we couldn't get the connection at all. If u disregard this feature then I guess you are fine. If I don't need this wireless feature to share screen, then I rather use forScore or NextPage3 app instead

I was trying to use this app as an alternative to SetList, which has a lot of bugs. Basically I just wanted a list of songs & some way to pull up info on the songs as I went through my set. Problem is, this app is a maze of epic proportions. It's cluttered and has way too many features and menus to flip through. I technically can sort of do what I want with it, but the design is so unintuitive that I decided to look for other options. From my standpoint, it's not worth the price tag.

SAVE YOUR MONEY - for a non-free app, this app works almost as bad as Snapchat. It crashes CONSTANTLY. I've tried updating it to no avail. It's really too bad, because, at its core, it's a really great idea, but it crashes on me more than it works (which, during a gig, is a massive bummer). They should give this app away for free, with how bad it works. I have free, third-party apps that work better than this. Maybe if they figure out all of the bugs, it'll be good. Not happy so far.

I had really high hopes but this app is just WAY too frustrating to set up. It crashes a lot, auto-scrolling is a nightmare to get correct scroll speed, and layouts are complicated and confusing. Wasted money other than to send midi presets to my midi devices but many other apps can do that too. After sending so many crash reports I finally gave up. Wound up with an iPad and Onsong and now have a working solution.

This app is pretty amazing! It just keeps getting better. Great job Arlo for making it easier for musicians to create set lists and keep different collections of songs at your fingertips. So many great features in this app. I use this exclusively for set lists now. I am in three different projects and it’s very helpful with different singers, musicians, genres of music, etc. fabulous communication from the developer as well. Very timely and informative. Huge fan!

Amazing ideas but they are not implement properly. Crashes all the time and doesn't feel reliable for a gig. I've heard from fellow musicians that the iOS version is bug free. So please please fix it for Android... Edit: after a couple of updates things have improved by a huge margin. Thank you!!!

I play i a praise team, and have been using this app for about 2 years now. I love that I can download a song from song select and insert it right into the app. I use pads that I can start from this app... really all around great app. the rest of my time uses the Band App, and love it as well. Argo is awesome when it comes to tech support, top notch in fact!

Pretty cool app, however it does not allow you to drag and drop songs between sets or to rearrange them. This is shown in their getting started video and was a KEY feature I wanted. Still waiting for support to tell me why this doesn’t work SIGH Update*** Support contacted me and show me how to do this Unfortunately they don’t clearly state how to do this in the instructions However now that I know how to do it this app is great Very cool Just make sure that you follow all the instructions this app has a lot of potential

Immensely complicated but has a massive amount of functionality never had a crash while in gig mode but the menu system needs to be addressed too many settings all over the place making a complicated task like midi via Bluetooth a pain to nvigte to the 4 different menus that contain midi settings. This is the It seems this app has evolved from a simple idea that has become a monster. Arlo you need to study interface design and navigation however still a great app I can't live without

I bought this app with THE SPECIFIC REASON OF SENDING AND RECEIVING MIDI DATA. It was another couple bucks extra to get the upgrade, which is no big deal, what is a big deal is it won't let me install the upgrade. I select it, push continue...and NOTHING! And now I just paid 15 bucks for NOTHING! Fix this please so I can actually automate my rig, and you will get your 5 stars. I am thoroughly pissed right now....

After updating to 6.0 the lyrics and song icon disappeared. I have been using it this way for years. Support says to use show or smart list. I don’t like this view and it’s bulky. I may have to find another program.
