  • Another brilliant piece of storytelling by the twisted minds at rusty lake Feb 27, 2017

    By Dubs1
The puzzles are more compact this time around, but it doesn't make them any easier - they always seem to find the perfect balance of challenging and thought provoking very nicely. The story adds so much information to the rusty lake series which I loved every moment of...this one is probable less scary, but it can be very disturbing at times which I always love. The story ties a lot together from their previous games, so recommend playing those first and you will understand this so much better and give you that 'ooohhhh - no way!' factor/reaction. Plus, once you 'beat' the game there's extra secrets/content with some REALLY challenging puzzles, but it's always satisfying and worth it...plus these guys are nice enough to put a link in the game right to a walkthrough if you ever get stuck...another brilliant story told rusty lake style, and I can't wait for their next game in the series which they say will be out sometime soon!

  • I DO NOT want this ride to end Apr 2, 2019

In all fairness I’m writing this review before having finished “Roots.” I am a little over halfway through, and am parceling out the remaining chapters like pillow mints, one or two a day to make the experience last - and that ain’t easy, kid. “Roots” has everything...and more. Superb puzzles that feel organic in moving the story along. And what a story - replete with well-crafted characters whose motives and emotions are so bizarrely human. And all achieved without dialogue, only through unique artwork and audio effects. Perhaps it is inaccurate to think of “Roots,” (or any of the Cube escapes) as devastatingly dark comedy, but I do chuckle while I shudder. And the gleeful anticipation I had before playing this game could’ve led to disappointment. But I really should know better than to worry about a letdown when Rusty Lake’s involved. Silly me.

I like the story and the art. The puzzles aren't that hard, and the interface is mediocre. Often I find myself with the solution in my mind and struggling with the interface to implement it. Personally I dislike trial and error puzzles and there are a few, which are even worse because of the cumbersome interface. As I said, I've enjoyed the development of the story but I'll stay away from further releases because of the easy puzzles and the difficult interface.

I previously wrote a review for one of the games in this series (the birthday one) without realizing the games were all connected because I had only played the first - I wrote feeling it was too violent. The suddenness of the storyline (the birthday one) took me way off guard since I didn’t know it was a part of a much larger story. However, after playing through all of the games and finishing off with this one, I’m completely blown away by the level of intricacy and detail invested in this series. I’m actually preparing to go through a grieving process knowing I’m all caught up on them, knowing I’ll have to wait for the white door to continue my infatuation, and knowing that after that, I’ll have to wait for more to be released (if that even happens - ahhh! 😱. Excellent series - I highly recommend!

After binging on all the cube escapes I bought The Hotel and was quite disappointed on that one (couldn't reset the room level without resetting the whole thing) so it was with a bot of temerity that I putchased Roots, but so don't regret it. Roots was a pleasure to play and graphics are easy on my eyes which lack the acuity to play most escape games out there. Have now played all Rusty Lake games and eagerly waiting for more to come out!

I have played all the rusty lake games. More than once. Even bought Rusty lake game, which was amazing by the way. But this one has been a huge disappointment. All i have to do is click and turn off my brains. Expected way more from you guys!

The cube escape series is simply one of the best games I have played, everything from the puzzles, story and spookiness factor are great. But the paid games are quite different and a disappointment compared to them. Roots focuses on telling the background story for the cube escape series, but telling that story takes precedence over having a quality game. It's really 33 separate and easy puzzles. Happy to pay the developer to support them, but it's really a donation for the series.

  • Colorblind beware! Jul 11, 2019

    By Rick.in.ICT
Firstly, if you are colorblind (or even partially, like me) be warned that several of the puzzles depend on color matching to solve. But that not why I gave it such a low rating, I don’t expect the world to cater to me. I rated the game so low because several of the puzzles just flat don’t make sense. Even after resorting to watching the walkthrough for a couple of them,I was left scratching my head and thinking “ok, but it still doesn’t make sense...” The story is definitely... unique. I will give it that. All around, for the price I don’t feel like I wasted my money. However, I would not recommend it to a friend. If you really like puzzles and need to kill a few hours and the price is under $2.00, eh, just don’t say you weren’t warned.

  • Love the game... if I could only play it. May 16, 2018

    By Grey_Lyn
I absolutely love this game. However, I can’t get into my “settings”, without the screen turning black and the app crashing. I can’t do anything, I.e let my screen go into sleep mode, look at another app, etc) without the game crashing. Once I start the game back up, it’s wiped clean. Last night I was at puzzle 24, I believe, pushed through the hours of the night to finish it (in fear of it losing all my save files).. only for it to randomly crash on its own and start me from the beginning.. all. Over. Again. If it would allow ppl to save their progress and not wipe it whenever it wants, I would give it 5 stars. Because it’s an amazing game.. but I can’t keep restarting the same game over and over again and dish out hours upon hours of redos.

  • My fave Rusty Lake game / reset explained May 2, 2018

    By RatFink64
This game is really one of the best but I am stuck at level 22; I inadvertently moved the bandages off screen and now I cannot complete the game because there seems no way to get them back. I am afraid if I reset that the entire game will start over? I tried to contact support but they told me to check the walk through. If I can un-stick this problem I’ll bump my rating up to 5 stars because otherwise this truly is one of the best games around. Just wish I could complete it! Edit: Rusty Lakes support person told me that if you choose to reset from within a level it gives you the option to reset just that level or the entire game. So... problem solved! Now that I’ve finished all the RL games I am hoping there will be a new one in the near future.

Hi, I love the Rusty Lake series and already played several of them. Because of the very short episodes this one loses some atmosphere and the puzzles are often too easy to solve. Having to push a child with his teddy into a well is quite cruel and left a bad taste during the rest of the game.

  • STRANGE Dec 21, 2016

    By DelleeComeOn
Many conflicting feelings after completing this game. I have to say after playing the whole thing, I found the game itself enjoyable, but the story disturbing. It didn't bother me though, it was just sometimes too depressing and unpleasant. But it might bother others. The game itself was okay, as it was long and it did in fact have a story. But I found the puzzles, for the most part, too easy. Definitely not as good as the Cube Escape series. The Cube Escapes were more surreal, scary (not just disturbing), and had harder to solve puzzles that were more fun. Oh well, I guess you can't get everything in one game.

  • Really disappointed. Sep 1, 2017

I've played all the cube escape games, and I was excited to play this one, except for one big problem: it doesn't save. EVER. If I click the little settings gear in the top left corner, the whole screen goes black (tried closing and opening the app). I've gotten as far as level 22, and I just went to play again (I've been leaving it running in the background so it doesn't restart), apparently I waited to long and once again, I'm back at the beginning. Super frustrating.

I have two problems with Roots. First, multiple fails on installation. After I got through, it was a breeze until the Child's Play. Emma won't react to Albert? Even after I reset the game TWICE. Please do fix this bug, because I'm a true blue fan and have played all of the game so far (Rusty Lake: Hotel included) and I have to say that I highly admire this universe and all of its craft. I'd be damned to not finish it in an orderly manner. Thank you! -Mr. Fox

Hi Rusty Lake. Big fan of all your games. I’ve been playing for a long time. I recently bought Roots and came to a glitch that will not allow me to go forward in the game which is very disappointing because I’ll have to restart the game in order to continue. I would like a refund if that’s okay; even though I fully intend to keep playing the game and all your games in the future. Thank you for the joy you’ve brought me and I hope this message reaches you well.

  • Escape the room type game, eh. May 11, 2019

    By Ncadmin
At the heart of this game is Escape the Room type puzzles. It’s probably the best of them if you like those games. I particularly don’t. It’s strong points are that it’s got a back drop macabre storyline where the story does move forward in the background as you proceed and while many of the puzzles are different than most and more interesting, it’s still ridden with click-fest mentality bordering on ridiculous room entities such as wood planks that slide up and down a window but aren’t removable but they slide freely as if they’re magically there. You also have puzzles where you need a combination and all you have to do is click some wall picture to get it. To me, that’s not a puzzle, it’s a click-fest. Some are more clever than that but the pattern is there. Escape fans will delight while old-time adventure gamers will turn their noses.

I should start by telling you that i am a hige fan of the series. One of the main reason i actually bought the game(i haven't paid for a game before) was because i couldn't get enough of rusty lake games. But that was also a problem with this one, there was just too much content. If youce played even simple ones like cube escape :Arles, the stages were far more spacey and mysterious and challenging than in any one of the stages you get in this game even after you pay. Repetitive. Disappointing
