  • A serviceable port to an excellent game May 21, 2019

    By christyan mackie
Beamdog's rehabilitation of the old Baldurs Gate games and Planescape has put a fresh new veneer on some of the best storytelling video games have to offer. I applaud their effort to port these games and offer them to a new generation of gamers almost 18 years after their original release. However, the love and care put in to the port is not enough to completely overcome the issues of bringing a game into a medium the original devs would have never dreamed up. The screen is too small on most iPhones to truly experience the game, and on newer phones the length surpasses the aspect ratio leaving long black bars on either side of the game. (An aside, there may be a function in settings that I keep missing that would fix this) An iPad will circumvent those issues or a DS stylus in a pinch, but the touch controls will always feel a tiny bit clunky compared to beamdog's excellent PC remaster. Otherwise the game is preserved and improved with much effort and care, and if you can handle a small amount of frustration this game will certainly reward you.
  • Needs Menu-Zoom functionality! Mar 13, 2018

It’s gonna have to be a solid 3 for the port alone but if the game had a user-friendly zoom-in functionality for the menus it could be a 5 star masterpiece. I’ve tried playing this game on the road and it’s unbearable on a bumpy ride. It’s worst than 3-D glasses at the theater! It’s a shame, my phone is now the only place I can get my game on these days. You guys should challenge yourselves when porting these hidden gems, what’s your motivation? Easy money? Fast cash? Because your work will be reflected in the end-results. I hope you guys look into this deal-breaking issue. Good luck 👍🏼 Edit: thanks for taking the time to read my review. I already tried the UI menu scaling and it’s still not enough. I press the wrong buttons like 60 percent of the time. The buttons are not clunky or unresponsive; they’re just too small to accurately interact with them. Especially on the road.

Very good on 10" tablet. Game itself is easy, some obscure quests may require walkthrough, but main quest can be easily solved without it.

Still SO playable after all these years. Really enjoying it. I was worried it would be too small on my phone phone but it seems to work. Love it!
  • Works great on 9in iPad Pro with stylus Jan 16, 2021

Been wanting to play this for a while, and decided to go with this version vs the far more expensive PS4 Icewind Dale bundle. I’m just finishing the first area, but already loving it! Much easier with my Apple Pencil, and I’m thankful for the Zooming, Text Scaling and Difficulty Settings. I wouldn’t play this on a phone, and honestly anyone who sees the UI and thinks it’s comfortable to play on a small screen may be expecting too much. If I had to nitpick, sometimes it takes a few tries to click on NPCs, and to press-hold on items to view them. But so far, no other complaints. So grateful I can play this on the go.

Got this in 1999 for PC... it was fantastic then and again now... the enhanced edition is a superb gentle and caring update. A pity we don't get actual manuals and story books and maps and other items to do with the story like we used to.

I love all of the d&d games that are in this bundle but for some reason this is the only game that doesn’t support the X, XS, 11, type screen size and I know this might also be a lot to ask but could you also hide the bar at bottom or at least blend it in like most of the games you know the tiny bar at the bottom of the screen however there are no real problems with the gameplay that I have seen so far thanks for reading and I hope that this is fixed on all of the games it would make them perfect!

if you are interested in this game after playing baldur's gate or games alike, you'll find the combat gameplay very dissapointing, (you don't need to develop any complex strategy to finish it). I think is better to see this as a point and click adventure game with a really beautiful writing, covering many existencialists dilemmas. The android port works excelent, im playing in a lenovo8 tablet, i dont recomend this for phone users because the screen would be very small.

I have a XS Max and still the text and buttons/controls are tiny. It often takes several tries to hit the right button or dialog text. Not only are all the controls tiny, but there are a ton of them all next to each other so it is all too easy to hit the wrong one. Maybe add a pinch and zoom everywhere not just on the view area?

This game is NOT suitable for playing on a normal sized phone. I have just purchased the game and had a headache looking at the screen. Tried to seek refund but Google play said it was not their policy so money wasted. Could continue playing but would simply be too much of a headache and I have perfectly good eyesight. Maybe it might be playable if it were for someone who has already played the game previously and just wanted to revisit the game.

Yeah this game is broken. Can't attack anybody and crashes. Luckily got it on sale for 2 bucks but honestly doesn't seem like it was worth it due to not being able to progress past the first area that you start in the game.
  • Still made no effort to improve this game? Mar 18, 2020

    By Dameonherby
Someone commented on this TWO YEARS ago, the devs responded, but seemingly nothing came of it; the buttons and options for this game are incredibly tiny, requiring pinpoint accuracy to activate them, creating an extremely frustrating experience just trying to play the game. The Baldur’s Gate games aren’t so bad thanks to the UI buttons being larger and clearly labeled, but the UI for Planescape is different, the options are smaller, closer together, which makes them harder to press. And no, increasing the font size doesn’t help with options that are represented by images, and not text. You want to attack that enemy? Nope, instead of selecting your weapon, you just unpaused the game and had your party swarmed by enemies, who are now dropping like flies while you panic trying to hit the pause button again, and failing repeatedly. Seriously, ADD A UI SCALING OPTION!

Purchased in 2019. Installed fine on my modern Chromebox. Played deep into the game. Returned to it today but although installed there is no way to start, update or uninstall it. Now it says that it's not supported on ChromeOS. Are there plans to support this again, or is my app now useless?

Unplayable on an iPhone 7. Yes I adjusted the settings. I wish I could get a refund. I get suckered by every tactical rpg they put on here! Update: developer responded. Go to this website a give us more details. Here are the details. Your game is unplayable on a small screen and you or Apple should give everyone who bought it on a phone a refund

This game is frozen in time and the effort to port it to mobile was minimal. It’s like an unresponsive site that just scales down for mobile. Trying to click the menus requires multiple taps and seeing what’s you’re clicking requires a telescope. Don’t buy it if you’re hit with a pang of nostalgia. You’re better off with your memories of the original game.

Don't buy this if you don't play it on tablet. Buttons in the menu is too small and not respond well to tap. Also the the game can rotate itself and scale itself to an unplayable game and when you try to rotate your phone it won't fix. I totally regret my purchase. For a paid game it have major bugs even before the game started. I wish I can have my money back
  • Menu is waaaaaaayyyy too small Mar 13, 2019

Can’t press the right buttons most of the time cause the menu is too small. Needs to be at the very least 4 times bigger(seriously). I just can’t play it. It also seems unresponsive to what I’m trying to do but maybe my fingers are just too big for the freakishly small buttons.

Sorry for hijacking this review section, but I was hoping I could get the devs’ attention on this. As for this game, it’s amazing, really. A bit unplayable on my phone but plays really well on iPad. Unforgettable storyline, gameplay, dialogue, etc.

    By Highwayhigh
Excellent port of an excellent game, but it really needs a cloud save feature or a way to backup saves. I had an iPad crash and I lost a 20 hour game save. This is a common feature in most modern games and it’s especially useful when playing across iPhone and iPad

I wish I had seen the “iPad only” suggestion before buying this one. I’ve wanted to play this game for years, but my old eyes and stumpy fingers make the tiny UI a non-starter. Always read labels thoroughly, kids!

I literally can’t pick up the scalpel at the very beginning of the game. Having an SE, I knew there’d be some difficulties due to the size of the phone, but I figured you’d at least be able to scale the UI. Nope. Just glad I bought this instead of BG or ID. Better 4 down the drain than 10. Don’t buy if you have an SE.
