A broader search function would be nice. I'd like to search my USB from the outset without requiring me to go into a specific folder.

Several reviewers either based their comments off an older version or couldn’t figure out how to use it. As soon as I got on the same network as my receiver (NR656) I saw it and connected. I was able to enable and disable each zone independently, set the input, and control volume to each. That’s really all I want to do so haven’t explored further. They did try to make the interface modern and it complicated things a bit, I would have preferred simple and clean, but that’s the norm these days... all the functions I need are there and work.

I mean, all I am using this app for is to change inputs and volume when I can't find the remote and it works great for that.

I already have a universal remote that does what I need and for basic functions I use Alexa... but when it came to listening to my music library — which is on a usb hard drive — it took way too long to get to where I needed. This app eliminated any and all difficulty. The app recognized my receiver immediately, and within a few button presses I’m listening to the song I want. What used to take 3-4 minutes (sometimes longer as I have around 1000 different artists on my HD, some are full discographies) now takes about 30 seconds.

I was surprised to find this app still supported. It has worked for me since 2016, when I first got my receiver. I bought the Harmony Elite remote, and use that for controlling my home theater on average. However, lately I’ve been using the USB function to play Apple Lossless and FLAC files on the TXRZ810, but the Harmony Elite wouldn’t allow shuffling of files on USB. Luckily, the Onkyo app allows shuffling. Now how cool is that. Not sure why the majority here hate this app, but it’s second only to the Harmony Elite in my book, and is first for shuffling USB files.

Despite the negative reviews from users, this app works exactly as advertised. The real problem lies with the receivers or amps it is controlling. I discovered that the most expeditious way to get the app back to functionality was to unplug the receiver. Apparently, when the receiver is in standby, it's not resetting whatever buffer is used to play music from internet, network, or bluetooth sources. Only a hard shutdown will do the trick. Some food for thought.

Every app has learning curve, but once you figure it out, the question is, does it actually do want you want to control the device. Happily this app works pretty good. With one exception, you can control just about every important parameter on each zone, including tone and some speaker tweaking. The one exception is the inability to activate the sleep timer. That’s unfortunate, since Onkyo buries the sleep timer deep in the main menu and you need to have the TV on to use it! Otherwise, it’s a pretty good app, certainly worth downloading and using.

The purpose of permission consent dialogues on Android is to ask for permissions when you actually need them, not just on app start. You could easily ask for the permission when trying to setup new devices. Just because we don't want to give you permission on startup, why can't we continue to control the devices we have set up? As for other parts of the app experience, it could be better. turning on a device is simple, but getting to the volume controls is a pain.

I am able to connect to Bluetooth and it shows it by my phone name, but no sound. I’ve had this problem before and updated the Onkyo receiver. It continues to happen and there is no update, phone is up to date and I end on the phone for hours with NO fix. Also the app stops working and there is no reason UPDATE - after reloading, updating phone, nothing worked Until - I unplugged my Onkyo for 2 minutes and then replugged in and everything works - I’d give more stars if it was more stable

  • Where is the volume control? Nov 22, 2019

    By Datbates
Uh, the most important reason for this app and I can’t find it. Just lay out the app like the remote. How hard can this be? People know how to use a remote. Why make the app rocket science? It should have quick access to the functions of the remote and a menu that matches the settings on the unit. Some developer has forgotten the first rules of user interface design. What does the user want, not what looks snazzy. Edited: finally found out you have to be on the selected input to have the volume control show up. At least I know how to make it work for me, but everything I said above still stands. I gave you back one additional star because the app can (eventually) do what you want.

  • Searching...Searching...Searching... Jun 11, 2019

    By JerseyBob54
This app worked really good for about 9 mo starting mid 2018. When I used it, it always found my TX-RZ620 within a few seconds. Starting a few months ago, it now only finds the receiver about 5% of the time. I even have my router set up to give the receiver the same IP address each time, and I search using that specific address using this app, and it still will not find out. Onkyo’s response is to power cycle the receiver and then power cycle the router. Seriously? What’s the point of having a remote app if you have to walk around the house pulling power cords in and out? I’m really tired of watching the spinning wheel and seeing “Searching” whenever I use this app. The RZ-620 is my second Onkyo receiver. I have found both to be good to very good A/V receivers but with dismal performance when it comes to networking. C’mon Onkyo, you can do so much better!!!

Worked great until Fall 2020. Now 90% of the time it just says that it can't find the receiver (TX NR696). I know it's not anything else in the setup because 10% of the time there is no problem. All firmware updates have been installed.
  • Needs Work Mar 13, 2021

This app needs a ton of work. Issue 1 need to stop the side rocker volume buttons from turning Zone volume up and down when in Zone 2! Issue 2 - In Audio Adjust menu - Add all the speaker volume adjustments instead of only sub woofer and center speaker. Why on earth you only added those two and not the rest is stupid! I hate having to go into the settings and listening to the super loud tones just to adjust surround speaker volumes! Issue 3 - Allow easier device access for zone two. Meaning if I want to use my phone to listen to music in zone I don’t want to have to put my phone in AirPlay mode the select in the app my phone then go back to AirPlay menu on phone and select the Onkyo receiver! Then fix volume adjustment! Issue 4 - To change audio modes have a drop down menu for each one (Movie, Music, Game, THX, add one for Dolby)! This would make sound adjustments so much more easier and seem less. Issue 5 - Get rid of music optimizer switch, it’s completely useless and does nothing! Issue 6 - Remote section is useless make it have the same buttons as the actual remote!! There are a few more but this app has amazing potential as replacement for real remote, but the lack of development is completely abysmal!

I have to reboot my cable modem/router for the App to see the receiver 1/2 of the time. It works great whenever it works. I have the latest firmware and network standby on. The receiver doesn’t drop WiFi. I have zero problem with any other WiFi devices. I have bought 2 receivers for a planned 3 zones each in my house and the purpose was to use the app to integrate it all with the app. Thinking about going with another brand. Don’t want to have to reboot modems just to listen to music..Onkyo can do better. I hope that they don’t abandon their customers by ignoring this issue.

Let’s think for a moment about what you want to do with a remote app and a receiver with two zones. Change the volume quickly and easily comes to mind. So bad. Just so bad. Why do I need to click so many times? First I have to figure out which of the indecipherable little icons takes me to the place where I can choose the zone. Then I have to select a zone, and then click to get out to the place where see what is playing, then, FINALLY, I can change the volume. God forbid if I then need to turn down the other zone. Seriously, how odd would be to just have one screen with the volume controls for both zones or, a master volume control? I would give this app negative stars but that doesn’t seem to be an option.

Finally. They have the network connectivity right. The old app had huge latency with a 5 second delay before the receiver responded. The new app performs substantially better. They touched up the interface and made it slightly more refined. The Menu has been reorganized. Please add the MODE button the e-remote controller. I dislike finding my remote to make the mini player active.

I LOVE this app! I have 3 zones set up and can always get music or surround sound where I want it. I have seen others say that it disconnects, and it does, but it comes back when you wake up your phone. Again, I just love it and the fact that wherever I am in the house, I can stop, start, turn it up, turn it down, change inputs -- it's great! I would really hate having to go to the main room and pick up the remote and interrupt other users every time I wanted to adjust something.

Seems the problem might be inadequate user competency. I love the ease and versatility of this controller. I can easily run my sonos or other streams through my patio speakers while playing something completely different in the living room surround system. Love the receiver, too. I only THOUGHT my 25 year old Technics receiver was great until I heard this through my Klipsch speakers. Thanks Omkyo - keep on truckin!.

Works pretty well. I can change volume, change inputs (see below), and control playback. Strange behavior: Deezer and Tidal can be controlled via this app as stated. But I cannot enter into these services via the app. Instead I must use the infrared control equivalent remote functionality and navigate via the menu displayed on a TV. After this has been done, this app can control them just like other streaming services.

When this app works, it's pretty handy. It will let you change sources, volume, and do some simple fine tuning of the system without digging into the setup. However, when it's not connecting reliably it can be very frustrating. That's the experience I had recently after an update. I did all the things suggested on the Onkyo page; cycle power to receiver, phone, and router in the order suggested. Uninstall/reinstall the app. Check firmware. No joy. I finally got it working again after using the remote control to go into Initial Setup and reenter the Wifi logon/password (skipping all the other steps except network). I know it was seeing the network before this was done because music streaming still worked. Can't say exactly what the problem was or if this will work every time, but it worked for me.

A couple of things, if the included remote is going to be sparse (like the 787), make the app control EVERYTHING. Not just a couple of things. Speaker levels, assignments, everything -and don't stop whats playing with a UI when adjusting either . 2nd, don't just name the app "controller". when you're going through apps you automatically look for Onkyo not controller. Call it Onkyo Controller.

The original Onkyo App was well designed and easy yo use. This new one works, but the redesign of the UI has made it awkward and fiddly. For example, in the old version you could flick between the receiver remote and the source/screen remotes instantly (controlled by HDMI). With this you have to navigate menus to get there. Its a major step backwards, and makes me regret upgrading my receiver.
  • Oct 8, 2018

Having this functionality in my receiver is great, but this app is what you get when a graphic designer creates the app and not a UI designer. The app is beautiful yet clumsy and cumbersome. Key features are hidden behind features most people won't use. How about a simplified interface option that gives you access to the basic remote control functions like volume when you're not necessarily streaming audio from the receiver?
  • Not connecting Apr 12, 2020

    By ForestOnkyo
I have the same issues I’ve seen others describe. I have used the app often without issue. It seems, more times than not, to have issues connecting to my receiver. Even after cycling the receiver power, and ensuring that network standby is on, I can’t connect. I rely on the app for network streaming to my outdoor speakers. I really don’t want to have to run downstairs and turn everything on from the remote every time I go outside. Onkyo really needs to provide an update of some sort to make this reliable.

I like the user friendly layout but the app has connectivity issues. 1. I often enter the app with the TX-8270 undetected. But it is and always is WiFi connected. 2. TIDAL chrome casting is also a big issue. Almost unusable which is sad because TIDAL is above Spotify, given the MQA and FLAC. If someone intends to use Spotify then one might as well buy a nonHifi amplifier.. 3. But I want lossless quality hence the use of TIDAL and TX-8270. Please resolve these or try at least. Kind regards Chad

Rarely connects to the receiver. This is an embarrassing attempt at an app.

This app has been working without any real problems for nearly a year. It’s not very intelligently designed - I agree with the reviewer who had trouble finding the volume control. Anyway, it has now suddenly failed completely, on iPhone it won’t even load any more. I’ve rebooted the phone as well as deleting and reinstalling the app twice but it won’t even bring up the first screen. My guess is that it’s not compatible with the latest version of iOS - but that’s just a guess. From this experience and reading other reviews, I get the impression that Onkyo really don’t take control from mobile devices very seriously - like it’s a nuisance that they have to do but can’t really be bothered with.

I got a new phone, so I thought I would try this again. It doesn't work. Search play store for 'Enhanced Controller for Onkyo and Pioneer'....it works. Onkyo just pay the guy that made this (probably out of frustration)..and make it your official application.

I have 2 Onkyo receivers, one upstairs and one downstairs. The one downstairs plays music outside with zone 2 set up. What I can’t understand is the app Never connects to the downstairs like it use to in the past.... and it’s band new. Either I’m having to do a master reset on the receiver OR I’m having to uninstall the app. Either way, I can’t understand why Onkyo can’t get this fixed and have more users download their app to use their product? Maybe Onkyo doesn’t care about apps theses days and mind you all of my devices are all up to date on the latest versions. Definitely a unhappy customer that in this day and age your products and apps can’t connect with each other. That’s why I’m giving you 1 star.
