I'm a fan of MLive's news however this app is very clunky: 1 - It keeps signing me out even if I check the "remember me" 2 - I can't share articles from the app to my social media because the app doesn't seem to have the web links for the articles

Like that there’s something news-related specific to Michigan in the App Store, but this app leaves me wanting something better. Inconsistent loading/refreshing within the app. Search function is essentially useless. Aricles that I open from a notification freeze the window in the app, and you can’t back out of it. And most recently, every article that is offered within a notification I receive is behind a pay wall. I understand the need for revenue, and would happily support local news sources, but not for a product that is poorly executed. At the very least, breaking news should be available to non-subscribers. Hope it improves someday.

decent app, it use to be very buggy but they have worked out most of them
  • Problems, problems Dec 12, 2019

    By Rubidium
A generally good app; a nice collection of local stories that matter. There are two fairly glaring problems with the app, though: (1) the search function is broken and yields zero hits no matter what topic or thing you search for. (2) Lacks the ability to turn off or filter topics you would rather not clutter your news feed with. I don’t really pay much attention to sports, but this time of year (mid-December), almost all of the news on the home page is sports related; it would be nice to be able to turn off news on subjects or topics that don’t matter to the reader.

They started pushing notifications...which is fine but when you click an article in notifications it never takes you to that article, it just takes you to their front page. And half the time I cant even find the article after searching for a bit.
  • Tech issues with iPhone8 Aug 21, 2020

    By CarolineEWL
News display is too wide for iPhone 8. Have to scroll to see end of line for every line of text. Can pinch in and hold, but goes back to wide when I let go. Map is not interactive as described, at least on iPhone 8. Coverage of state news is good.
  • Location of stories May 29, 2019

    By saginawbaygrl
Would be better if the location of a story was better defined. For example sometimes a township is named, and not the county the township is in. Some counties have townships with similar or identical names so only by reading article and recognizing, or not, nearby locations like roads, can I see if an article was near me. The articles take a while to load when my phone isn’t connected to WiFi. Comments cannot be seen when using Internet Explorer.

West Michigan, and Grand Rapids in particular, is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. People here work together to find solutions to problems by honoring diversity and inviting everyone to the table. Reading the Grand Rapids is the best way to start the day by staying connected to a community that values communication, cooperation and collaboration between all residents!
  • Occasionally hangs, weird formatting issues Aug 25, 2019

    By Stikboy
Tends to hang when loading the over abundance of ads crammed into every article. Still serves up those annoying fake winner apps that require you to quit the app to get away from the scam site. The way overused slideshows usually display blank pics; but high def ads - or they just hang the page. Many times it just opens to a blank page and I have to go menu spelunking to get content to show. Way too much sports fluff stories, and stories with (do not edit) or (insert caption here) still in the copy. Better than an actual newspaper for reading, but far worse for wrapping fish.

I understand the need to make money but today's news has only 22 stories 12 of which are subscriber only. $9.99 a month is way off the mark for a news app. There are tv streaming services that cost less. Detroit Free Press is $1 for 6 months. For $4.30 a month you can get the print Sunday edition delivered. Likely uninstalling today. If you ever revise your subscription plans I will reconsider this review and using your app again.
  • Horrible before, can’t tolerate it now Dec 22, 2020

    By Rjphonda
I’m officially deleting the app and I’m kind of sad. Here’s why. The previous version, with the swiping articles across the top, was terrible. To be a statewide news source, there were hardly any articles and you couldn’t tell the difference between statewide and local. And it pretty much consisted of all sports stories. I really only opened it when I was utterly bored. Fast forward to your new version. I got excited the first time I used it, just so much better look and feel and more content that had more variety, to just sports. And then it happened. I clicked NEWS in the menu along the left and began to scroll. 2, 3, 4 stories down and it rolls quickly back to the top. I guessing it’s refreshing, but seriously? I can’t get further than 5 stories down and normally a lot less. I’m done. Dee. Leet.

  • So Tired of being asked to sign in Apr 14, 2021

    By wealthforall
I have been a subscriber for my entire life and I am 74 years old! Sometimes I get into the EReplica no problem. Sometimes I can read MLive articles no problem. Other times, it asks for uid and password. It references both Mlive signin and Jackson Citizen Patriot sign in at different times in the log in process. They are two different ids and passwords for me. I go look it up and sometimes one of them works and other times it doesn’t. One of them uses my thumbprint on my ipad and lets me in and then a couple seconds later pops up again with the darn login message. Makes me want to just give up and cancel the whole thing.

If I access a story from a notification, read the story, and then exit the story without leaving the app, the entire app freezes. This is the number 1 issue I’ve had since downloading the app. Sometimes when I open an article, it opens zoomed in and reverts to the zoomed in state when I attempt to zoom out to view the whole article without having to scroll side to side. I’ve had to close the app and reopen it to resolve, which is also a problem because in some cases I haven’t been able to find the article once I do so. While some of the other issues I’ve had have been fixed, this app has always been buggy and inconsistent.

So, firstly, this app really should be just a sports app. More than half the 'Top Stories' are sports. Why bother having a separate sports page or Mlive Sports app? Secondly, I get notifications for stories & when I click on them it goes to the main page & then I can't find the article. Useless.

    By HTR-7065 in the 313
I’ve been using this app without any problems whatsoever for the last year but today’s update totally broke it. It crashes immediately after launching. This is the only reason for the one star. I tried rebooting my device (iPad) with no luck. Please provide feedback if this is a known problem. As far as the content, having lived in various locales “outstate” for many years growing up and while in college and grad school, its really nice to have a solid source for news like Mlive that covers areas outside Metro Detroit. Thanks!

There's a glitch with the articles. Sometimes, an entire section is on the application's "Saved" folder. This MLive app stops and closes when I want to share articles; except on the Facebook application. I want to share and save articles on other apps. Facebook takes a lot of my memory. Fix the glitch to save articles on the app and the ability to share articles on other apps; besides Facebook.

I hate that it resets my selections about every 2 weeks so if I want to quickly pull something up, I have to go back and do it all over again. Now, there is NOTHING under the selection tab. Also, when I get a push alert and select it, it doesn't take me to that story. I have to go hunt for it. Provides local news but not without annoyances along the way. Almost not worth it

Downloaded to keep up with what is going on in my area and Michigan in general. The biggest fault is the push notifications don't coincide with the news feed. I hit the story and see everything but the item I am looking for. Or I have tapped on stories and the story before it pulls up. As I read other reviews I see the same issue
  • The story? Jun 7, 2020

    By Mspeepers
What story? Who, what, where and when? What next? That’s my reaction to your “stories”. There is such a profound lack of information mixed in with a good dose of misinformation that I keep deleting the app. Then I add it back, hoping things will be better. I vote for more news, fewer ads and write valid stories instead of lists of teasers that link to more flashy ads. What a waste of time.

The app is good for news I suppose. However the stories never seem to change when you want to see a specific region's news. The worst part about this app is that it will literally take 5 minutes for the stories to load at times. Sometimes a shorter wait, but always a wait.

It’s nice to get local news however when I have my home town selected I wish it only showed stories from my area and not stories from statewide. I want to know what’s happening in Kalamazoo not Ann Arbor. If I want other towns news I’ll go to the statewide section. I would think the Kalamazoo section would only show those stories.

You guys have got to fix this last update. Very buggy. Noticeable delays when clicking on something. Comments seem to get attached to wrong stories. And for goodness sakes, there MUST be a way to allow people to opt out of (filter) topics. There are days where EVERY single story on the "front page" is about sports. It's way too much.
