  • So far I like it Nov 14, 2017

This is a little tedious for me, because I am not a Japanese beginner. I have known kana for a long time, and I wish there was a “test out” option for it, but i don’t mind a little knowledge reinforcement. I do really like the games and the method! The writing recognition is a tad finicky, but such is all tablet/phone games with the recognition so I’m not mad at it. Overall so far I think it’s fun and good. Will update after more playing time, but as for now, it is for sure well worth the few dollars!

The mini games get repetitive pretty quickly. If you're looking to actually looking to LEARN Japanese, this is not the app for you. It teaches you to read and write characters, but it doesn't teach you any real words to apply the knowledge (at least, not during the Hiragana phase, not sure beyond that yet). It's also irritating when you're writing during the 15 second challenges because if you get a character even slightly wrong, or if you're stylus skips, you lose points and the teacher gets really angry looking for far too long, which is not conducive to learning. Overall I enjoy the game, and I will continue playing it because I spent money on it and it is structured to learn N5 and N4 Kanji, but I wish there were more variety to the mini-games, maybe a sprinkling of vocab (maybe even a phrase or two!), and more built-in reinforcement for how to write the characters in each lesson.

I really like this app and it helped me very much learning Hiragana. I really really hate the baseball minigame. I appreciate the idea but as it is now it doesn't add anything to the game, as it's just writing with extra steps.. it takes really long too. Maybe remove the tapping part at the end or change it to something else .

Useful tool for learning when all I have is a phone on hand. There are some issues with the minigames and certain strokes are difficult for the app to recognize. Also, I am quickly running out of material to study, would love to see more kanji lessons in the future.

Overall I like it. The writing recognition can be a bit finicky. The mini games are timed and a bit stressful because of it in my opinion but crashing and burning is a good way to really know if you something I guess. The teacher will also growl at you and do a “face palm” if you mess up during the lessons. I’m just a beginner cut me some slack?? Wish the game was more encouraging and forgiving that way. But overall it is a fun way to lightly study on the go.

Finally got off row one Hiragana. App refused to accept my あ no matter what! Also those who are slow due to disability must RUN from this app because ir will never work for you! My brain processes to slowly for this app so it took MONTHS to get past first row! Plus it kept making me start over frombeginning every time I opened app! (Use masahiro mizutani writing hiragana Robo apps instead! Just search for Kanji Robo then click on his name. The music Robo uses is repetitive but I still love all his apps! The icon is blue and red. Has opponent named robo. Repetitve but at least writing portion works!)( I use kana drill to learn kana and about 86 words of hiragana. ) I DO love the Sushi counter game and wish I could just play it and skip rest of app! Hated the memory fighting game and the baseball game. Thanks!

The accuracy of the writing detection is abysmal, majority of the time you can be perfect within the guide and it will fail you, I've been more accurate making squiggles than try to follow the prompts. The mini games range from ok to very annoying. The worst being the memory minigame where you need to remember a the order in which the characters are displayed then repeat them. It's definitely geared towards younger kids, but I think even t they would be frustrated by some of the inconsistencies.

Drawing the characters is far too sensitive on some characters, and gives too little time to figure out exactly what the boundaries are to draw them. for example "so" is almost impossible for me to get correctly. The varied minigames are also a nice touch and a valiant effort, but overall i spend more time trying to figure out each new game and determining the exact to-the-pixel stroke than I do learning.

The transitions on this app are very slow and the English is very awkward. You have to wait to be told to draw each stroke which feels unnatural. The TIMER is so bad. If you're trying to make someone remember how to write don't put pressure on them let them memorize it. It's executed well in the mini games but timing when writing is so nerve wrecking that I can't even recall the hirigana. But the worst part is you have to be very precise when drawing hirigana. It's very discouraging and also very confusing when you actually were drawing the correct hirigana. It's so bad I've actually forgotten some of the hirigana I've learned. Skip on this purchase it's not worth it. I wish I could get a refund this is horrible.

Disappointing that the developers didn't forewarn that the app isn't compatible with iPhone 4 vers. 7.1 , especially as they are aware of other compatibility issues. I would like to be able to use the app, but it's impossible as the app fails to load.

Fantastic app to learn to read and write hiragana, katakana, and kanji!! I use it and so does my 8 year old and 6 year old. We haven't had any trouble with writing detection. We're using Samsung Tab A 10.1 devices and a Pixel 3XL. Using the Samsung pen makes it even better! We've tried many, many, many different Japanese learning apps and this is the best one!

Just what u was looking for. The games help with the memorization, and are actually kinda fun. I love the dojo zen mode as I can use it to repeat the characters I'm studying at my leasure until I feel comfortable with the characters

Really good game to learn. Feels like its actually teaching me rather than just showing me. Recommend 100%! worth the little bit of money.

Several times, the app just goes blank nothing when toying with the settings. Also the red screen curtain gets irritating and feels very slow in between when loading repeatedly after each character

It's a nice app but needs quite a bit of polishing. Some games become frustrating because control is bad, in the restaurant often the plate doesn't get picked up or dropped correctly, and why the mad tapping for batting?! As others said writing recognition is too temperamental at times, and they do not recognize/teach similar ways to write the same character. i.e the hiragana for ki is not accepted with the full leg. Ke is recognized with a straight line, but ko fails if there's no curve..

  • Good App but minor flaws Oct 6, 2016

    By CalciferCritic
My favorite thing about this app is how it teaches you to draw the characters correctly. But my least favorite is how slow each lesson goes by. The mini games, although meant to help break the monotony of the lessons, end up drastically slowing the process down...to a crawl. After a while, they make me switch to a faster, more fluid app. If they added a way to disable the mini games (or added faster mini games similar to Mind Snacks) and streamlined the lessons a little more, it'd be perfect. Overall I would recommend the app. It's good and I'm glad I bought it.

  • Excellent But Needs Improvements Apr 14, 2015

As someone who loves Japan and Japanese culture and pop culture, I found this app very useful. It's helpful as far as learning all three writing systems--hiragana, katakana, and kanji--but when actually writing, the accuracy and timing is frustrating. If timing could be fixed a bit and more leniency towards actual writing, the memorization would also work better. However, this is one of the best apps I've ever used to learn the Japanese writing system.

Just bought this so I could give it a try before I recommend it to my students (I teach Japanese in high school), but it hangs and will not launch on my iPhone 6 with iOS 10.0.2. All I get is a black screen. Please fix!
