This is the most fantastic language app ever and I have tried many. But I am starting with two courses of French in community college and the app is still a challenge. So use other resources as you need to help. I find the grammar explanations clear and concise and helpful. The clever stories are fun even for a 60 year old. It should be considered a supplement to speaking and not a replacement. Seriously, no app can replace talking to real people. That is too much of an expectation and not a fair criticism. That said, the best way to learn — go to France. I will get back to France as soon as I can! With this app I will feel more confident to speak with the locals in their native tongue....but there are grumpy people all over the world.

I really like the method, so fun and complete. But why, oh why so expensive??? Where I live I could afford the best french course paying the same investment I would if I decided to pay to use the app :( pricing is really disappointing.

  • The best French lesson app Jul 30, 2017

I can't say enough about how much I love this app. The lessons are funny and enjoyable to the point that I'm disappointed if I forget to do my daily lesson. Each one is designed thoughtfully and with so much detail. They poke fun of the French while always giving you little culture lessons. The jokes are snarky; you may not have perfect French but you are treated you like an adult. It is immersive yet allows you to translate into English if you really need to, which is helpful. I took French in college so I wasn't a total beginner. If you are looking to pick up your rusty French, forget other apps, this is the one for you! If only they had one for Spanish too.

First 7 lessons free and fun. The humor is subtle and greatly appreciated. I checked all the English translations just for the jokes! I also like the mix of French accents: France, south of France, Canada, etc. Even as a beginner, the grammar explanations in French were understandable. Alas, the pricing! 65 USD/mo pay as you go or "cheapest" $864 up front for 3 years. C'est dommage!

Some days you get lessons some days you don’t , after ten days I have received no further lessons , corrections are slow in coming , it’s all about grammar , if you don’t have a good understanding of grammar you will be lost , the cartoons are very annoying, and it’s very expensive, you can get the same info by reading a grammar book, does little to help you speak the language

I really enjoy the lessons and the materials are all high quality. The problem is that it is expensive and it does not allow you to go at your own pace - it limits the lessons you can do, and if you miss them you cannot make up for it. Would not recommend you buy it (I bought it but regretted!)

Yes the lessons are fun and interesting and I looked forward to doing them. And during the trial I started to justify spending the $24/month on this program. Lo and behold at the end of the trial I go to sign up and it's $24/mo with a 36 MONTH commitment or $65 month to month. I actually logged back in a couple hours later because I was sure I misread something but no, that's the price they've come up with. And for that you are extremely limited to five 5-10 min exercises per week? No thanks!

  • Up to 5 lessons a week Jun 3, 2019

Up to 5 lessons a week, that about sums up my thoughts about this app. It’s insanely expensive, and you are held back from trying to go further at your own pace. Listen if I’m paying hundreds of dollars a year for an app, I want to be able to get more than 5 lessons a week out of it. It was cheaper for me to sign up for French classes and take them in person for two semesters at my local college than it would be for me to use this app. Think about it.

I can tell that there is a lot of effort put into building these original lessons, but let me be candid about the UI: It sucks. When every other app uses a "card design" and allow users to swipe/switch between them, this app uses the outrageous web view, and it often requires scrolling up and down a few times to finish a question. Also, the 3x3 cartoon images can be too small on the phone screen, and it is very difficult to read the texts. I do not think I want to subscribe to their expensive monthly service.

The app is really good and fun. However, the questions where you're supposed to pick one option from the ones that roll out, don't work. When you click on the answers to roll out, the app shuts down and doesn't allow you to answer the question.

I decided to pick up an app to help me brush up on my French. I'm glad I chose this one. The lessons are personalized to what I need to focus on and the animations are fun and funky with well written and spoken dialogue to help with ear training. Would recommend highly if you want a bite sized refresher. I do not know how well it would be for someone with no previous knowledge of the language as it jumps in quite quick with oral dictation and verb conjugations.

I really like this app, entertaining and gives intelligent semi personal feedback. Nice explanations and a variety of activities. However, 400 dollars for fifteen minutes five times a week is way too much. I would consider buying a subscription at 100$ lower the price so we can join! :)

The experience is like watching the trailer of The Silence of the Lambs. You buy the ticket then realize you will watch Snakes on a Plane instead.Overall the content is good, support team is responsive. The first free videos of VH/aliens are very fun and engaging. They are a memorable learning experience, you crave for next lesson. But things changed aftet I bought the subscription.Videos became rare. Now when I get any, they are dull or cliche. If I had known, I would not hav paid so much for an app

The inital seven lessons are really well structured and I got a lot out of them. However, the full course is horrendously expensive if you can't make a long term financial commitment to it. £50+ per rolling month! Not worth that sort of money for software delivered training, especially when compared with the cost of say, Netflix or Spotify.

I love it, but some of the audios are not playing or malfunctioning. Despite it, it's a great way for me to revise my rusty French. Too bad the prices charged are too excessive.

  • good way to learn french on your own Mar 31, 2015

Likely this is the best of the iPad French language courses. It is entertaining and fun to learn. Still, it doesn't replace having to speak French in front of people and having to communicate what is on your mind. I wish it cost less than it does; this is one of the more expensive language courses on the iPad. I have found it better than Rosetta Stone.

The app is only fun if you already know enough french to read and understand most of the content because it is highly based around grammatical content. It attempts to be fun but is not fun and confusing for people actually learning from knowing nothing at all. I think it was built for intermediate level students that are already studying in a lesson based class. The en english buttons don't translate instructions more than once. Given that I'm struggling to even get past 7 lesson tests to even get to the real lesson based content I don't think I'd enjoy paying for something way over my head. Also, why am I being tested over 7 lessons? Why not just one preliminary test and set me on the appropriate lesson level? I also think that basing the lessons on grammatical content does nothing to help someone learn to speak. This app will only create students that have good grammatical book skills and no applicable speaking ability.
