Some of the songs are free, most require a monthly subscription, and all of them are 'ukulele karaoke' - chords, lyrics, and a moving line to keep tempo. The app will not show the melody music or teach you how to play anything but chords. Disappointed. But nice as far as it goes. more -
This is Very Effective for a Beginner

They have a selection of videos teaching a handful of basic chords and strumming patterns which are very efficiently and clearly produced. The free songs (as well as paid) include chord guides and strumming patterns for each chord used in the song with links back to the chord instruction videos for clarity. This is more than sufficient as a starting resource for a beginner who is a motivated self-learner. I have tried learning mandolin and guitar in the past but struggled because I have very weak hands, but with this app I have already played a song on the ukulele and greatly enjoyed the learning process. It felt more like a game than a learning drill. I’ll work through more of the free songs and chords but I’m already considering paying for full content. more -
Good - Could be Better

The first thing that comes to mind is the whole “starter kit” marketing. The kit is really just the ukele - anyone can download this App... I would give purchasers of this starter kit some sort of incentive like a free year to the full app. From what I understand you could buy any ukelele and use the kala app. The second thing is the lessons in the app. They are so so, as mentioned by others most are about 10 second clips with a zoomed in camera and no real tips. My final complain is that in the progress section of the app - none of my playing is saving. I’d love to see my progress and have played numerous songs to completion but it still says that I need to play songs to add data. On the positive I really like the interface of the strings to guide you as you play. The app has the right foundation just needs a couple tweaks and the kala starter kit needs more bang for its buck - doesn’t really separate itself from any other ukelele. more -

I just recently picked up a ukelele and my family is surprised by how quickly Ive learned. The app has a tuner and new songs every so often. Highly recommend to first time players! Takes the frustration out if learning and makes it fun. At the end of every song the app even tells you which cords you need to work on and gives recommendations. Two thumbs up!! more -

Then I took my ukulele camping with me and actually sat down to look through the list of songs available, and I was blown away. I ended up playing for a number of impromptu sing-alongs. In particular, there was one individual pretty deep on the spectrum, who I've had trouble connecting with, but I learned during this trip that he loves to sing! Thank you so much! 😊🎶 more -
“Ukulele Hero”

This was the most fun, easy to re-learn App I used. The tuners are great and extremely accurate. The song library is always growing, and has classics, all the way up until this week’s top hits (I’m not kidding- they have Doja Cat already). The videos of the chords and strums were easy to follow and very clear. You can also play along WITH the song that’s playing, and they even have the chords pop up to the timing of the tempo (which is changeable if you want to slow it down if it’s a harder song, or speed it up to kick your jamming skills a notch). So with the chords popping up to the timing it’s almost like guitar hero, but for Ukulele (“Ukulele Hero…”). ;-) more -

(Jason Mraz "I'm Yours") I've never played an instrument before! I've always just been a singer. This is amazing, the short videos are perfect for giving you the chords and strum patterns, the songs can be searched by the chords you know, or you can select and refresh yourself on the chords within each song. The settings make it even easier. 10/10 recommended! more -

Then this past Christmas I received an iTunes gift card and I got this app and I love it. It has tons of songs from old traditional to the Beatles to Adele and more and they are always adding new songs. When you pick a song the app plays the melody and you play the chords and as the melody is playing it shows you what chord to play next. When the song is over it will say show results and it will rate how well you did on that song. For each song it also shows you a strumming technique to use for that song. I am having so much fun with this app. It also has a tuner so you can tune your ukulele first. If you are trying to learn the ukulele this app is for you. more -

At first I was going to try the app for a month to see how it went, but I loved it so much I bought it for the year. I have learned many chords, strum patterns, and some of my favorite songs with this app. I love how many choices of songs and genres are offered, with more songs added all the time. Playing my uke with the help of this app has really encouraged me. I wish someone would come up with an app this user friendly for the guitar, too. I highly recommend the Kala app, and also the ukuleles they sell! more -

The song learning is kinda like a guitar hero experience game that you can change the tempo for better success while lerning how to transition chords. It gives feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to work on. This is my last day of free trial, so I guess I will see how much I like the free version. I love it as it is right now. Update: I paid for the full version. No regrets. more

It's not clear what notes you are supposed to play when. I miss being able to have the landscape view for playing and the immediate feedback on the song. Some of the songs are out of sync with the lyrics or just not the same chords they were in last year. (see Santa baby). Will not renew my subscription if it's not improved. This app leaves me sad and frustrated. more -
App needs better feedback
Nov 15, 2019 By 0kami_RoseI was tuning my ukulele as instructed is stated for the first sting I started on it was too high therefore I turned it down and it was all good the string was tuned and I was happy. I went to the next one it stated it was too high and kept saying that no matter how low I went to tune it. Therefore I went to the a string it stated too low therefore I tuned it higher and higher next thing I know the sting breaks by this point I’m upset because now I’ve broken my ukulele and need to replace my string when all i wanted to do was tune it. Please fix this so it doesn’t happen too others. I understand that I should have knew it was getting to tight I had a feeling but decided to ignore due to positive ratings. I am deeply disappointed but not trying to be rude in any way or form because I know how notes, letters, texts, ect. Can and may be interpreted in other ways please state I know it’s my fault as well but please understand that I am a beginner whom is trying to play the ukulele and become good at the instrument I hope to at least get the hang of. Thank you for reading I know this takes time off from you but please fix this. more -
Aug 3, 2020 By David BoydFree songs should be free and not say "get full access" in a box. This app doesn't work well with a kala baritone since you can't change the key to DGBE. Transpose is spotty in what you can shift up or down. If you press down on the wrong part of the screen to change tempo the song will play instead of changing tempo. The advice it gives or doesn't isn't always helpful or even appear. I can butcher a note to high heaven and somehow the app will think its good. Needs more work. more -
songs missing, not a great update
Jul 19, 2022 By KingCharles_the30thBeen using the app for a year or two to relax and sing to my favorite songs, but since the new update things have been getting worse such as chords changing in songs that weren’t there before (for example Bm was added to my go to 4 Non Blondes song “What’s up” and now is difficult to play). But today I think there was a licensing update because half of my song are gone from my favorites playlist (I think I had 20 total). Most of entire bands are missing like Coldplay (“Yellow”, “The Scientist”), Snow Patrol (“Run” “Say Yes” “Chasing Cars”) and more. I know there’s not much you can do about licensing, but a way to see notifications on the app for updates like these would’ve been better than to find half of your favorite songs just gone. It’s just a bummer. more -

There are so many pop-ups asking me to buy various services that only slow it down further. All I wanted was to use the tuner but it's buried under a bunch of nonsense. And then the tuner itself, honestly isn't even that good. I just ended up getting a physical tuner and deleting the app because the experience was so awful. more -

I was so impressed with myself, but even more impressed with the simple genius of the App! I took a break and came back to an updated version that looks fancy and works like crap. What the heck? Ugh, bring back the old version!!! This is not what I signed up for 😭. It can’t get permission from my microphone, there is no option for it, so I can’t tune play along anything. No landscape mode anymore. Everything is so buggy I can’t open chords without it crashing or even hit the play buttons to here the songs. UGH and now I’m stuck with a subscription for this. Can’t I just get the old version back? Or at least a refund? I can’t even use it!! more -

First, I shouldn't only be able to play 1% of the songs in the app. Second, I'm playing the notes correctly, and the app says I'm not, even though I'm playing them how the app wants me to. Lastly, the tuner doesn't work correctly. I selected C and the tuner said that C needs to be almost as loose as physically possible to play correctly, then when I'm playing, says that C is out of tune. Please fix these problems and it will be a 4-5 star app. more -

You can't even play a song thru because it stops to nag you! From what I could see the tuner is like a bad joke. The format is clunky and nonintuitive and lacks any kind of control for scrolling thru the song unless that basic feature is locked behind the paywall too. I'm not going to sign up for a service they won't even let me evaluate properly first. more -

How the hell am I supposed to decide if I like whats on offer if you keep hastling me the second I'm through the door!? Invasive notifications and a poor experience overall. Uninstalling. more -
To hard for beginners on the gutair

Can you add a easy thing because all ur songs are really hard to play you don’t even give us much time to do a song because the notes come by too fast! I’m rating this game 2 stars because I wanted to learn how to play the guitar but this game doesn’t really teach you anything but playing songs I’ll rate this game 5 stars if u can make it easier and make it so you have more time to get the correct note on playing the guitar! U did kinda good on this game I’m waiting for you to change and I’ll rate you 5 stars thank you! 😁 more

“Ukulele Hero”

This was the most fun, easy to re-learn App I used. The tuners are great and extremely accurate. The song library is always growing, and has classics, all the way up until this week’s top hits (I’m not kidding- they have Doja Cat already). The videos of the chords and strums were easy to follow and very clear. You can also play along WITH the song that’s playing, and they even have the chords pop up to the timing of the tempo (which is changeable if you want to slow it down if it’s a harder song, or speed it up to kick your jamming skills a notch). So with the chords popping up to the timing it’s almost like guitar hero, but for Ukulele (“Ukulele Hero…”). ;-) more -

(Jason Mraz "I'm Yours") I've never played an instrument before! I've always just been a singer. This is amazing, the short videos are perfect for giving you the chords and strum patterns, the songs can be searched by the chords you know, or you can select and refresh yourself on the chords within each song. Then this past Christmas I received an iTunes gift card and I got this app and I love it. It has tons of songs from old traditional to the Beatles to Adele and more and they are always adding new songs. When you pick a song the app plays the melody and you play the chords and as the melody is playing it shows you what chord to play next. When the song is over it will say show results and it will rate how well you did on that song. For each song it also shows you a strumming technique to use for that song. I am having so much fun with this app. It also has a tuner so you can tune your ukulele first. If you are trying to learn the ukulele this app is for you. more -

At first I was going to try the app for a month to see how it went, but I loved it so much I bought it for the year. I have learned many chords, strum patterns, and some of my favorite songs with this app. I love how many choices of songs and genres are offered, with more songs added all the time. Playing my uke with the help of this app has really encouraged me. I wish someone would come up with an app this user friendly for the guitar, too. I highly recommend the Kala app, and also the ukuleles they sell! more -

The song learning is kinda like a guitar hero experience game that you can change the tempo for better success while lerning how to transition chords. It gives feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to work on. This is my last day of free trial, so I guess I will see how much I like the free version. I love it as it is right now. So fun to learn to play!

It really helps to play along with the app. I love how lots of songs can be played a step up or a step down. That can help when the chords are more difficult or when a song is sung outside of my vocal range. It’s fun to have the lyrics and sing along! I love the built in tuner and the song selection is pretty strong, too. I love when the app also shows a strumming pattern for a song. It would be cool if there were a place to suggest new songs. All in all, great app! I recommend it all of the time!! more -

I can find most of my favorite songs, and the app makes learning fun and easy. The way you learn is like Guitar Hero, except with a real instrament. You play the song, with the notes coming on the screen along with the words, kind of like karaoke. At the end, if you want a review, it will give you tips along with how well you did with each chord. :) more

The only thing I would change is I wish I had an option to turn off the color coding for the chords. While it's helpful at first, my brain is starting to associate chords with colors rather than the chord names themselves, which isn't helpful in the long run. more -

Hate to say it but so much better before the update

I had spent serious time creating my favorites folder and they are nowhere to be found, so last night I spent an hour creating new favorites and this morning they were all gone again. There is also not a place where you find all of your favorites, you can only change the song list to list your favorites first. Or am i missing something? I’m not sure why they messed with it. Update made free songs stop working

The free songs are supposed to be usable without a paid subscription, but since the update, you can only play a 30 second preview. I assume that’s a bug and not a deliberate decision, but it’s still annoying. Update: I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and the problem is gone. So if anyone has a similar problem, try a reinstall! more -

What it is really lacking, and would make it excellent, is if it shows you the strum pattern along with the scroll bar while playing a song. For a beginner, that piece is essential. Some of the songs are free, most require a monthly subscription, and all of them are 'ukulele karaoke' - chords, lyrics, and a moving line to keep tempo. Good - Could be Better

The first thing that comes to mind is the whole “starter kit” marketing. The kit is really just the ukele - anyone can download this App... I would give purchasers of this starter kit some sort of incentive like a free year to the full app. From what I understand you could buy any ukelele and use the kala app. The second thing is the lessons in the app. They are so so, as mentioned by others most are about 10 second clips with a zoomed in camera and no real tips. My final complain is that in the progress section of the app - none of my playing is saving. I’d love to see my progress and have played numerous songs to completion but it still says that I need to play songs to add data. On the positive I really like the interface of the strings to guide you as you play. The app has the right foundation just needs a couple tweaks and the kala starter kit needs more bang for its buck - doesn’t really separate itself from any other ukelele. more -

Plus new songs appear, disappear, appear again, and are now gone. The recent update said new songs would be added each week, but they keep disappearing. The biggest puzzle is for a few days I had songs where next to the tabs that say "Practice" and "Ukulele" it also had "Band" and "Lyrics." These features and are now gone. Why? Is this an upcoming update? more -
Tuner problem and trouble pausing the song

However, with this app it took a while, the tuner had a hard time deciding whether the note was in tune or not. Now moving on to pausing the songs, sometimes when I was playing a song I would need to stop the song, but the song is hard to pause, I still don’t know how I do it. I just click random areas in hope the song would stop. Other than this the app lets you pick what tempo you want and helps you keep the tempo and every thing else it’s supposed to. more -

The tutorials for chords are links to videos that last 10 seconds without any verbal instruction. They need to offer more for people actually trying to learn music. Like suggested finger placement, as I find some of the chords difficult to place my fingers for. Also for the iPhone 10 and 10S they have not optimized their app for these phones screens. It is often cut off near the top of the screen. more -

best to buy a real tuner
Feb 10, 2022 By Dragon workerso i have a kala ukulele, and i’m a complete beginner that doesn’t really know music and can’t tune by ear. i was using this app specifically to tune my ukulele, i wasn’t really interested in the other functions so i can’t say anything for them. started tuning for my session today, first three strings were perfect. last string i kept tightening and tightening and it still said it was too low. again, can’t tune by ear, so i relied completely on this app. i just kept tightening, and then the string snapped. i won’t be able to get a new string for a few days, and therefore can’t play for a few days. i highly suggest for other beginners to get a real tuner and only use this apps other functions. more -

Transpose is spotty in what you can shift up or down. If you press down on the wrong part of the screen to change tempo the song will play instead of changing tempo. The advice it gives or doesn't isn't always helpful or even appear. I can butcher a note to high heaven and somehow the app will think its good. Needs more work. more -
songs missing, not a great update
Jul 19, 2022 By KingCharles_the30thBeen using the app for a year or two to relax and sing to my favorite songs, but since the new update things have been getting worse such as chords changing in songs that weren’t there before (for example Bm was added to my go to 4 Non Blondes song “What’s up” and now is difficult to play). But today I think there was a licensing update because half of my song are gone from my favorites playlist (I think I had 20 total). Most of entire bands are missing like Coldplay (“Yellow”, “The Scientist”), Snow Patrol (“Run” “Say Yes” “Chasing Cars”) and more. I know there’s not much you can do about licensing, but a way to see notifications on the app for updates like these would’ve been better than to find half of your favorite songs just gone. It’s just a bummer. more -

There are so many pop-ups asking me to buy various services that only slow it down further. All I wanted was to use the tuner but it's buried under a bunch of nonsense. First, I shouldn't only be able to play 1% of the songs in the app. Second, I'm playing the notes correctly, and the app says I'm not, even though I'm playing them how the app wants me to. Lastly, the tuner doesn't work correctly. I selected C and the tuner said that C needs to be almost as loose as physically possible to play correctly, then when I'm playing, says that C is out of tune. Please fix these problems and it will be a 4-5 star app. more -

Play list is gone
May 24, 2022 By HSCDSHThe app was “improved” a few months back. Since that time I rarely use it. I loved it before the changes and would recommend it to friends. The new version removed my playlist and that is my biggest disappointment. Not as user friendly. So sad. I renewed it anyway hoping it would grow on me. It has not so I am looking for another app. Second issue is the new songs are all current songs. You rarely have anything of vintage music that is added. So my playlist disappeared without any warning and no new music that I care for. Bummer! more -

I didn’t know about this, and a few days after I downloaded the app, it said I had to buy a subscription to be able to play or even access certain songs. The ones it DID let me play, it only let me play for like 30 seconds. But the tuner is free, and that is good (the only good thing about this app). You should get it if you are willing to pay. Also, it doesn’t have every song, even with the premium. You can suggest songs, but the ones that aren’t originally played with a uke they don’t have. more -
New Tuner Failure

It also had a chromatic tuner available. With the new update, the tuner is way off. I can strum one string and have the same tone each time and the marker jumps from too low to too high. Even if I try to tune to what the tuner says it is inaccurate. This is unfortunate because in my opinion Kala had the best chromatic tuner on this app. more -

It's not clear what notes you are supposed to play when. I miss being able to have the landscape view for playing and the immediate feedback on the song. Some of the songs are out of sync with the lyrics or just not the same chords they were in last year. (see Santa baby). Will not renew my subscription if it's not improved. This app leaves me sad and frustrated. more -
App needs better feedback

I went to the next one it stated it was too high and kept saying that no matter how low I went to tune it. Therefore I went to the a string it stated too low therefore I tuned it higher and higher next thing I know the sting breaks by this point I’m upset because now I’ve broken my ukulele and need to replace my string when all i wanted to do was tune it. Please fix this so it doesn’t happen too others. I understand that I should have knew it was getting to tight I had a feeling but decided to ignore due to positive ratings. I am deeply disappointed but not trying to be rude in any way or form because I know how notes, letters, texts, ect. Can and may be interpreted in other ways please state I know it’s my fault as well but please understand that I am a beginner whom is trying to play the ukulele and become good at the instrument I hope to at least get the hang of. I was so impressed with myself, but even more impressed with the simple genius of the App! I took a break and came back to an updated version that looks fancy and works like crap. What the heck? Ugh, bring back the old version!!! This is not what I signed up for 😭. It can’t get permission from my microphone, there is no option for it, so I can’t tune play along anything. No landscape mode anymore. Everything is so buggy I can’t open chords without it crashing or even hit the play buttons to here the songs. UGH and now I’m stuck with a subscription for this. Can’t I just get the old version back? Or at least a refund? I can’t even use it!! more -

You can't even play a song thru because it stops to nag you! From what I could see the tuner is like a bad joke. The format is clunky and nonintuitive and lacks any kind of control for scrolling thru the song unless that basic feature is locked behind the paywall too. I'm not going to sign up for a service they won't even let me evaluate properly first. more -

Scroll allllll the way down to the bottom and click on your Apple ID. From there it will take you into account settings. You will find your subscriptions in there where you can cancel the subscription to this app. As an experienced musician this app is not worth the time. Maybe for a brand new beginner with a soprano uke, but not anybody who already knows chords, how to strum, or has a baritone ukulele. Don’t waste your time. more -
The update ruined the app

I had been using the app for about 10 months and felt like I was learning and getting much better. I started out at 1 star ratings after finishing a song and was regularly getting 3 stars. Then I updated the app. The problems are: 1. Deleted my old playlist. 2. Although my microphone is on, the cord feedback now requires headphones. 3. Got rid of the score and star rating on how you did playing a song. 4. Scrolling through songs is glitchy and there is a faint imprint of the song list with the scrolled list behind it. Can’t tell what song you’re actually clicking on. 5. The strum patterns are not as useful as the old style. 6. The whole interface is clunky. I love my Kala ukulele, but the update ruined this app. more -

There are allot of missing ukulenny tutorials from the app after the update, for me is a huge downgrade even the design and the ui is bugged. more -

Updated app just keeps crashing

What’s Groovy
My friends gave me a $300 USD ukelele for Christmas, and up until now I have never gotten down to learn and play it. I was just browsing around for ukelele apps and found this. I was kind of glad that I found this app, because my ukelele is the same brand, Kala. I opened it and found many songs to play along to, although some were part of the “full access“ package. Since I didnt know ANY chords or notes, I watched the videos teaching the fingering on different chords, and once I knew enough, I played all these different songs, and already on the first day I could play the song Lavenders Blue. I found myself playing on Kala for three straight hours. Yes, I am not exaggerating!!! THREE HOURS STRAIGHT!! I already knew I had to buy the full access, and I am still so happy I found it. I have improved soo much using this app, so thank you to whoever started this app! There are many other reveiews for this app, and most say its bad and give it 1 star. I strongly disagree because it gave me a head start on ukelele and aftr 3 weeks Im still using it, and I am not planning on quitting. There are no problems for this app, nothing to improve! Its amazing 💯

What’s Subpar
Initially a really good app to learn to play. Enjoyed it a lot. Suddenly, version 3.2.1 has none of my playlists that I saved. Email to support pretty much sent me a list of non-relevant articles. I enjoyed this app and I'm frustrated that now I am locked into a year subscription that does not give me the benefits I'm paying for.

You can now create your own multiple playlist and auto-play the whole list in the song player.
NEW 7-Day Challenge:
Start your own 7-day challenge and learn to play from Day 1! You will be surprised when you can already play many songs on Day 7!
NEW Improved Strumming Pattern Learning List:
You can now find the videos for all patterns in one list in the LEARN tab.
Improvements & Bug Fixes:
* Song Player UI, including text size adjustment to fit all the lyrics on the screen
* Auto-play your favourite songs in your playlist.
* Play page design improvements - you can now easily find songs by genres, new/ recently released, featured beginner songs etc.
* Fixed issue where some songs ended too early

Chord Tracker enables the app to listen when you play in real-time and provide useful feedback to help you play better.
Landscape Song Player Improvements:
We've ironed out minor display issues and made a few improvements to the song player in landscape mode (yes, you should try it, if you haven't already!).
Bug fixes and performance enhancements:
Majority of the fixes and improvements are under the hood but you may find some noticeable improvements in the video and song player.
