I agree with many of the comments here. It is a beautiful calendar - the artwork is so lovely and it definitely made me long to be somewhere cold and snowy but it was very “one note.” I really love doing the activities - and while there are the standard games and information like puzzles, card games, and a book about Nordic holiday lore - it isn’t nearly as interactive as it has been with past calendars and it was a bit of a let down. I know it takes a lot of work to do the calendar every year and with all that is going on, it may not have been possible to do more. As with so many other things, let us hope that next year is better.

If you are completely new to the JL Advent Calendar, this is a smooth, interactive calendar, and you may be quite pleased. Having been a long-standing user of the one from the website, I am disappointed in several ways. First, I can no longer give these as gifts to my distant family & friends with any assurance that they will be able to actually use them on whatever kind of system they have. Second there is no “bulk” discount unless you buy from the site. Problem there is that it only works on iMacs & PCs. No phones or tablets. And if you have an old operating system on your computer, it will not download & be operable. The setting is as beautiful as in past incarnations, but far less interactive. No fun little surprises, like squirrels popping out of chimneys. And few options for fun make-it-yourself activities as the days go by. Mostly just what’s available before the days actually begin. The smashing balls game is more regimented, and I’ve yet to earn a really decent score in the building-with-blocks game. (Of course, I just may be getting too old. 🙄😆) So while this has been a happy staple on my gift-giving list in the past, I am very sorry that it isn’t this year. I do hope that improvements are planned for next year, or I may not even purchase it for the few on my Family Share. I have been priced and technologied out of the market.

The app is delightful. However, having bought it for family and friends I thought the calendar was free, as it has been in previous years, for JL members? I used to be able to view it on my tablet by signing into JL. This year I have had to pay, and additionally, pay more than I would if I had bought a single calendar through JL. Very disappointed.

I love your advent calendars and have been doing them for years with my now 6-year-old son. I was so excited to see an iPhone app! His favorite feature has always been the snowflake maker, but if it’s on here, we can’t find it! So my feedback is that we are disappointed to not be able to make snowflakes this year. Also, I think in previous years there was an icon that took you to a complete list of activities, and that was very helpful. But I’m not seeing it either. This is an update. After having the app for a couple weeks, I agree with the other disappointed reviewers. I miss all of the personalization from previous versions, and I find myself only remembering to check the advent calendar every 3 days or so. My kids don’t even ask to play with it. If the cut back in content is due somehow to the craziness of 2020, then I understand. But next year I’ll be looking at the included content a lot more carefully before paying $5 for this app.

Delightful, as always, with enhanced graphics and new activities. Love the many "Easter eggs" in main scene and cottage. Gnomes are a great addition! Two requests from me and my annual gift recipients: 1) Make more clear that mobile version is a separate purchase and not free with desktop, as in the past. 2) Add back activities for some days. At 12/15, no snowflakes (!), stained glass/coloring, etc. Videos are cute, but interactivity is the most fun. Others unhappy about this at Apple store.

My family LOVES this advent calendar - when October comes each year we start looking forward to the launch of the new theme and calendar. In the future I am hoping you can look at the games through the eyes of the old or low vision - there is now not enough contrast on the games for my mom to be able to distinguish the ornaments, or the card games. The only game my mom can kind of see is that Tetris-type game. Also, I am hoping that come December 1 we will see the moon phases again? My family also misses the old ornament game .... just relaying our thought and wish list. You have a wonderful team of designers working on this and coming from a family of designers, we enjoy all the fantastic nuances within. THANK YOU for listening! Can’t wait for the start of this years calendar!!!!

This app works perfectly fine. In fact with the ability to use the touch screen to move things around it is better than the desktop version. Do not get it if you only have a smartphone. It will be too small and not as enjoyable. It is a real shame that so many people are review bombing this app just because they don't know what they are doing or didn't read the instructions. And no you can't gift this app to someone. This is different from the Desktop version you get for free because you have a Jacquie Lawson account. You have never been able to gift playstore apps. If you want to gift this app so someone then send them a Google play gift card which they can use to buy the app.
  • A stripped down, melancholy Advent for the covid year Dec 6, 2020

    By K8lowe
I have been enjoying Jacquie Lawson calendars since her Seaside Advent several years ago. The music, artwork, and activities are always imaginative, interesting, and fun. This year, I can only describe her Nordic calendar is Spartan. Fewer activities, and melancholy, albeit beautiful, music, with some old favorite tunes thrown in. I’m sad, but understand the difficulties experienced this year trying to put this together. The artwork and animations are still wonderful. Happily, I’ve saved all my logins for all my earlier calendars, which are all still accessible (Seaside will always be my favorite) so I can enjoy all the music and activities when the sadness of this year becomes too much. The 2020 calendar reflects the pain of this year and is appropriate for this season of horrific loss.

Ah, the magic. This gets better and better every year, Jacquie is an amazing artist, weaving her magic with the lightest of touches. Previous years I've had to be online to view each day's clip, but this year it's all been offline which is fantastic, means we have been able to watch them in comfort, not perched like sardines in the data hotspot by the window! This lovely calendar is a tradition at ours now, thank you so much Jacquie x

I love this advent calendar. I’m wondering if something is wrong with the app, though. Last year as I progressed through the month, my little fireside room filled with activities and there was a book that told me more about the day’s theme. This year, aside from my shelf filling with gnomes, nothing has changed or been added to the room so far. I feel like I’m missing something. The art and music are still beautiful and the little films are charming.

I have loved these advent calendars for years, but this year’s version gets only two stars because of disappointing content and changes in marketing. I long made it a practice to purchase at least 10 advent calendars from the JL website to send to friends and family. But I did not do that this year because it was clear that the version from the website would run only on computers and not on mobile devices. The iPad app required a separate $4.99 purchase from the App Store. Well, o.k., I figured, even though $4.99 is expensive for an app with a known life expectancy of 25 days. I bit the bullet and bought one for my iPad. I purchased only a couple on the JL site for friends because I had no idea what devices most of them might want to use, and I didn’t want to send a gift that then might require an out-of-pocket additional purchase. Nevertheless, I eagerly awaited Dec. 1 to begin opening the calendar, anticipating its usual trove of gorgeous art, interactive games and activities, and interesting explanations of Nordic Christmas traditions. And then the Grinch really rode in. As of Dec. 6, I had found one out of three: Plenty of gorgeous art, but a dearth of interactive activities and no explanations, for the most part, of Nordic holiday traditions. This year’s calendar is a shadow of its former self. Score another one for 2020, I suppose.

Bought it for my phone, but it's really too small to enjoy. Bought it for my Windows 10 with Edge PC, but after multiple attempts I couldn't get it to run. Tried all FAQs and sent help requests to JL, but nothing helped, so got a refund. The free version for members from JL also didn't work. My tablet is a Kindle Fire; downloading Play Store just looks too complicated, so I won't be enjoying this year's calendar. VERY disappointed, as I love them. Would have given at least 4 stars, but lack of anything to help brings it down to 1. Didn't hate it, just couldn't play it.
  • Disappointing Dec 6, 2020

    By Khomeschool
Each year we wait in anticipation for December 1st to start an exciting interactive experience with the Jacquie Lawson advent calendar. The past few years made me eager to buy this year’s version. What a disappointment it has been. In previous years there were fun games associated with many of the days. When there was a skiing mini video there was a skiing game where you had to ski Ted down the mountain and avoid obstacles. When there was a mini video about beautiful plant arrangements, you were then able to create your own and it would be on display in your cottage. Not so this year. It would more rightly be called a video clip advent calendar. We are so disappointed this year. There have also been books in previous years that appear daily on your shelf in the cottage to go along with the day’s theme giving additional information into the tradition or activity for the day. We always enjoyed this educational piece for learning more about the geographical area represented. Those are no where to be found this year either. If it was a matter of explaining up front “things are a bit different this year due to restraints on our designers because of Covid” or something I would not have come with such high expectations. As it is, it has been a huge let down and I’m sad I bought this version.

I have sent out these beautiful Advent Calendars every year and all have loved them. But this year sending them has become very complicated, making me very frustrated. As a non-tech senior, it makes no sense at all to me! IOS & Google only?? I have Chrome just like I did last year, but now I don't know if the people I send them to will get them if they don't have what's required? I've spent +HOURS trying to figure this out, and have had to travel to family for help, and they were confused as well. Tried to get the 'free' one so I could see it as well (always wanted to) but struggling again. The help was no help. So sad because this is a wonderful animated card.
  • Impossible to give as a gift vs easy previous years Dec 18, 2020

    By honorrah59
This app works fine on my tablet....however, This is such a disappointment this year and probably the last year I will gift this advent calendar. I sent this as a gift to over 70 people who I have sent to in years past and just loved it. Sadly most people no longer have laptops and so could not use the gift I sent them via the Jacqui Lawson website. Some people had to download the app to their tablets therefore requiring the recipient to pay for a gift I had already paid for. Some Could not download or had errors...basically of the 70 people I sent to, only 20 people had success. I am now going to request a refund from the website. In order to gift you have to know each persons personal computer system..Apple or pc...do they use a laptop, tablet or phone? And I could not find a way on Apple App Store to gift the Mac tablet so many folks were extremely disappointed this year. So why would something work in 2020? Whomever at Jacqui Lawsons company decided to take a very simple process and make it harder was a foolish decision. Using this advent calendar on a web browser worked just fine and everyone could open it...never had a complaint before.

I am absolutely disgusted that there is a charge for the app when, as a member that has purchased 10+ advent calendars for family and friends, they have to pay to view a gift that I have sent them!! Especially my 77yr old Mother who does not have a desktop, only a tablet, and who is not computer savvy, and lives alone and due to the current Covid19 restrictions I can not visit to download for her. I purchased for her, as done for the last 4 years, so she can while away a couple of hours playing.

Cottage worked for one or two times. Now will not respond to touch. Have to reinstall to see if that helps. Very annoying. Also I second many other reviewer's complaints about paying twice, and not being able to EXIT the calendar. Twice as annoying. After waiting many YEARS after the Apple phone version to get an Android version, I expected better.
  • Sad Dec 19, 2020

I’ve been a member since the early 2000’s and had the pleasure of using the very first advent calendar you put out, through to this year. I always marveled at how each year it got better and better. And then whomp, 2020 hit, and this version is such a monumental let down. My mother (who has had them for as long as I) wanted to use it on her laptop and and never got it to work, with very little help from the company to resolve it. And I thought I’d just buy her a version for her phone but she resisted, and now I’m glad that she did. The graphics are lovely and the video snippets are fine. But labeling this as interactive when users of calendars before will know this to be false. I respect that it’s been a doozy of a year, but switching marketing and all that was working well right before the holidays without a better explanation is a shame. I was really looking forward to this and now I really question if I’ll continue with my subscription which I never would have thought I’d say.
  • This frustrating Nordic Calendar!🤬🤬🤬🤬 Dec 12, 2020

I have sent your wonderful calendars for years to my friends, family and grandchildren. Everyone can hardly wait for them once Thanksgiving is over. This year COVID 19 has infiltrated your work space. Of all the times to change your format ...when we least need another stressful thing to take care of. The calendar has been difficult all the way around....how can I send a surprise little gift when I have to ask these questions. And then trying to get the app for the iPad , which hasn't worked without glitches. My friends, family and grandchildren are mostly all disappointed. Thank God I didn't order as many as I usually do because I certainly wouldn't have plagued any of them with this calendar. Good luck on next years sell. I'd like my money back!

Stopped working on chromebook after 2 days. I hate that this company did this instead of sticking with the web browser version. Never had a problem with that; a joy every year. Now my daughter is so upset we can't get it to work consistently. Just uninstalled to reinstall. We'll see if it works. This is ridiculous though. Will not be buying next year if they don't offer web browser version.

Delighted to see this in app form as I have purchased every one published so far. Had planned to pass this year had it still been web-based. A smooth download, usual beautiful graphics and lots to do in the chalet before December starts (and afterwards!). Cannot comment on the day to day functioning of the app until December, of course. I doubt I'll be disappointed!

This really helped get me in the spirit for Christmas. I enjoyed the games and the soothing music. I didn’t care so much for one song that was loud and Marching Band themed music. I would like to see more of this product available in the App Store. I looked for the English Garden and the Curios, but could not find them to purchase as an app. Like many others these days I am rarely on a desktop and typically on an Ipad. I appreciated an app for a more sophisticated and mature taste, most of what is available on the App Store is infantile, puerile, insipid , and commonly vulgar. Thank you for making this product ! I enjoyed it completely.

I use this on my smart phone and have no problem at all viewing it although I do have quite a large screen. The calendar is beautiful and I love the fact that you can decorate your own tree. I love the fact that there is always something happening and the fact that it changes as the sun comes up. If you like advent calendars then this is well worth the money. It's a shame it can't be sent as a gift on android but that's not the fault of the supplier.

The interactions, things to do, characters, music are phenomenal! Super job! I love it!!!! I have it on both my iPad and iPhone, so of course, I have to keep them up-to-date! I even love finding those adorable gnomes hiding around the village. I love the games, art, music, interactive characters, the decorations on the little trees on the first road of the village, and in the room! I’ve changed the couch, chairs, and love seeing the gnomes lined up on the shelf after I find them. I like tapping them, petting the dog and cats, and of course, I’ve loved decorating the Christmas tree! Thanks for allowing us to have 3 and switch between them!! Love it!!

To the reviewer who accidentally sent people the desktop version of the calendar from the Jacquie Lawson website, the FAQ there says you can get a refund from them. The mobile/tablet apps are only sold via official Apple and Google Play app stores. I'm really pleased it's a speedier, app-based calendar this year. They are always good fun and have a variety of short animations and activities revealed day by day in Advent, plus some to explore beforehand. The Nordic theme sounds perfect.

Wonderful upgrades and the quality is SOOO beautiful! I found all of my questions answered in your FAQ section. I read some others had trouble downloading the app. My phone & tablet are both newer Samsung's so I'm sure that helps a lot w/ the levels of video requirements for your gorgeous graphics. Thank you so much for this wonderful and very personal (I have Nordic ancestors) calendar! I usually gift copies to my grandkids so I'll just buy them each a Google Gift Credit. 😉

My mother-in-law sent me my first Jacquie Lawson Advent Calendar a few years ago and my husband and I have enjoyed them every year since! The artwork is beautiful, the history and lessons are fun and interesting, and games keep us occupied on snowy December days. It’s become something I look forward to every year and I can’t wait to share the music and fun scenes with our 1 year old daughter this year! Thanks for making this part of our family holiday tradition!

  • Snowflake maker? Dec 15, 2020

    By MathTeacher:
  • A stripped down, melancholy Advent for the covid year Dec 6, 2020

I have been buying this advent calendar for a while and am always so excited for it! Every year, my favorite part is always the mini games and activities. From skiing games and snowflake making to cookie decorating, I have always have fun. However, I barely got any games in my daily activities, and only had them in the home. Although the videos are beautiful, they are not as fun as the incredible games. I maybe got 2 or 3 games that were not in the home this year. It was especially sad because of the corona virus and such an odd Christmas, I thought it would maybe even be a more special calendar. It was really underwhelming compared to previous years, and I hope this does not continue.

The Advent Calendar app is fun as usual. However we are very sad about having to make an additional purchase to use it on our Nook tablets as we have done previously. The calendar is a gift that a friend has given us for several years. She would be very disappointed to hear the additional purchase is required. Worse than this is that when we decided to go ahead and purchase the app we could only install it one of our Nooks, which use the same account to uninstall and install the other Nook.

Sumptuous multilayered graphics this year and all works fine for us. However it has been a real shame that pretty much all of the daily baubles have been videos. No snowflakes so far. Far fewer activities. Ultimately disappointing. Edit: why on earth choose a video of a colouring in scene being coloured in over an activity of the same?

I am a 10-year fan of the Advent calendars, send MANY of them as gifts each year and am happy to see them available for tablets & phones, although personally I'm going to stick to the large screen on my computer. HUGELY disappointed that Google Play won't let me purchase a $5 gift card online, so that I can gift the Android version. Guess that portion of my purchase will be staying with Jacquie Lawson instead transferring over to Google. The Apple Store lets you gift an app, so they will be getting a piece of my financial pie.

We have bought these over the past 4 years, and thoroughly enjoyed them with our kids. This year, each day is a short video, with no activities. The videos are cute, but our children loved the activities. We miss the snowflakes, cookie decorating, and snowmen. We ould love to see these return in 2021.

I have treasured these JL calendars for many years, and I typically buy 10 or more as gifts. A change to marketing was the first disappointment I encountered as JL somehow thinks I can correctly guess how each recipient will want to play their calendar. I gave only 2 as gifts this year. Daily disappointments followed: a dirth of activities (no designing cards, snowflakes, snowmen, cookies, wreaths), no library detailing Nordic seasonal activities and customs, a solitaire game I have won once in 13 days. Perhaps a fuller description of the differences between this and previous year’s calendars would have helped me choose more wisely. Fingers crossed that next year’s design foregoes the app store element and returns JL to its former glory and marketing independence.
  • Appropriate for 2020: Disappointing Dec 26, 2020

    By littlepipkin
Have loved the advent calendar for years but this one just stunk. You cannot gift the app to others so even though my mom bought it for me I still had to spend money to use it on my phone. So few activities, games, art to create yourself. Very little explanation of Nordic culture and tradition. The gnomes were fun but this is basically 25 videos with very little to do or interact with. I would up finding the link to last year’s calendar from the Cotswolds because it is way more fun. Hope next year it will be more like it used to be. I don’t want to just watch animated videos of bears.

We look forward to the Jacquie Lawson advent every year. Unfortunately, it’s been a disappointment this year. The artwork is beautiful, as always, but I didn’t pay for 25 days of videos. I miss the interactive surprises that pop up during the month - decorating cookies, making cloth, making snowflakes.... nothing this year. I’m glad they started us off with a lot of games before December 1st and the gnomes are cute, though too easy to find, but with such a disappointing year, we rely on things like this calendar to lift us. I don’t even open it everyday anymore. Once or twice a week is enough.

  • Do not buy Dec 20, 2020

I love these calendars and buy for friends every year but this years was a disaster. You couldn’t buy mobile version for other people. Since that is what most people use I couldn’t do my traditional gifts. The calendar itself has been a disappointment as well. Usually throughout the season these will have little interactive things to do like decorating stockings, making wreaths etc. which is always my favorite part. This year there is hardly any interactive items. So disappointed on multiple levels this year. Really hope they get act together next year so I don’t have to retire the tradition permanently. Next year get back to more interactive stuff too! Should have one every couple days.
