  • Fun and curious story for adults Nov 9, 2017

    By StereoRealist1957
Murder, mental illness, fairy tales, and skullduggery. How can you go wrong? The premise is interesting; you are investigating a case via short videos stored on an old desktop PC. All you have to do it piece it together with the limited tools at your disposal. Using keywords, you view the videos, seemingly at random, to pull the together the story of what happened. (There is a *trick* to viewing the videos in order.) I enjoyed the story, and the actress, Viva Siefert, is beautiful and intriguing. At the end, I am still left with questions about what really is happening, but a story that excites your imagination and curiosity after it ends is part of the fun. *** Technical issue: on the iPad, the game runs upside-down, making it impossible to use my keypad. Just saying. ***

I love Her Story! Much like Device 6 and Year Walk, I lost myself in this game, although 'game' is not quite the right word. Immersive mystery story is a better descriptor. You are dropped into the story with no information and no instructions. Armed only with access to an old-school database of clips from police interviews and your own research skills, you must piece together the story. I must note that there is no way to 'win', although that only adds to the artistry of the game. The real point of the game is the experience of learning the story in bits and pieces and watching how your impressions change through the the experience. It leaves one wondering, both in the game and in life, do we ever truly have the full story?
  • Good game, slightly frustrating on an iPad May 22, 2016

    By BlueIceEye
This was a great game. I couldn't put it down! I did get frustrated b/c I was playing on my iPad and it made me hold it upside the whole time. I couldn't use the keyboard stand, and I either had to type upside down or constantly flip the device. That said, it didn't STOP me from playing, so don't let that stop you either. Just be aware before you buy that you can't use your device as you normally do. The game and mystery itself was a lot of fun though. If you like straightforward games with clear directions you will NOT like this game. If you like getting pieces of a mystery in no particular order and figuring things out then you will LOVE it!

More of an experience than a game, overall this was an excellent time and it was fun to keep track of your own theories on what's going on as you watch the videos and choose to investigate what you want. I do agree that there should be more to wrap it up as opposed to the way it "ends." Overall, five stars for the acting and the concept, and the intrigue I felt while playing it.

If you need your gaming experience to have a specific list of rules, your objective constantly spotlighted with an icon hanging over it, or enemies to destroy, then this game is definitely not for you. However, if you are of the ilk who can take initiative, listen intently, and put two and two together, you will enjoy the process of deciphering Her Story. Simple production values and a very solid performance allow you to concentrate on the unfolding narrative and be immersed in the experience. You rely on your own skills at putting information together to solve the case, just like a real detective has to. The one downside, I would say, is that despite all the preparation and obvious hard work that went into putting the game together, the actual gaming experience is entirely too short.

Her Story is a different kind of game — other reviewers do a good job explaining what it is, but not all of them mention what little instruction exists. You literally have access to a computer terminal of clips and nothing else. Watching all the clips and searching for different ones seems to be the only thing you can do to figure out the story. On iPad, the screen is locked the wrong way (home button on the left) so it cannot be used effectively with most keyboard docks and an iPad Pro. This is a simple fix, just enable rotation. I’m surprised this game has been around so long and that fix has not been implemented yet. I will give Her Story a continued look and update my rating if my opinion changes.

The game is fine. I was confused on how exactly you progress or solve the case because it doesn't directly tell you. I played for about 2 hours and decided to see what I needed to do by looking online. It turns out you basically search different clips until the game decides you've seen enough and asks for your opinion on what happened. There are 217 clips. The actress herself and allowing the player to be a realistic detective were great, I just would have liked for there to be more to the game.

This is a great game. The price doesn't bother me--I choose to look at it like I rented a movie for the night, since I did finish it in a matter of an hour or two. I liked seeing the story in bits and pieces. It wasn't overly confusing, and it did add a slightly creepy air at certain points. However, once the chat screen popped up (perhaps because I'm on a phone?), the video interface moved to the side to expose another clickable (the purpose of which I'm not exactly sure), cutting off my access to the fifth video in a search. So I'm pretty sure that I'm not able to see everything there is to see. I do still have quite a few questions, and maybe that's a feature of the game, but I think it's more likely that I just can't access all the videos due to telling the little chat guy that I'd figured it out. So don't end it until you are sure you've seen everything. All in all, creative and engaging, but four stars for not being able to go back and re-watch everything.

Amazing game! the gameplay is pretty new and fascinating. the ending was a little abrupt and maybe ambiguous, but getting to it was a real pleasure! I would love to see more games like this one, with new crimes or mysteries!

My fiancé and I are big fans of the old Law & Order so this game is like a dream come true. It was so much fun trying to piece together the story :-) I will say however, it is definitely not for everyone. If you enjoy mastery, mystery, and games that blur the fourth wall, this might be for you. This game would be most suited for fans of text-based adventure games, or fans of interactive non-linear "literary" experiences like The Path. This is not really the game for those of us who (me included) like 5 minute pick-up-and-play games in which you try to 3 star every level. Approach it with curiosity and an open mind and I'm sure you'll love it!

Awesome game on Steam. But do not buy it on phone. You can't bypass starting video. It's been like this months, still no fix, no answers.
  • Frustrating Jul 1, 2018

I liked the mysterious nature of the game, but there is NO definite ending. You are never told anything or shown that you got to the end of the case or you have watched all the relevant videos. I kept waiting for something to tell me I solved it, but nothing ever did. It was only after I went online to chat groups that I figured out that I had solved the story literally the first day I started to play. I do not like games that have no sense of accomplishment or finality. The idea of the game is clever. But it’s ridiculous to not give it an ending or definite story. It’s like the makers want it to be so mysterious that they forgot to have an ending. It felt like they wasted my time because I kept searching and playing, thinking that there was more to the story because there was nothing telling me I had won or found all the videos. It’s also ridiculous that there are sites dedicated to the discussion of what the real story is. If no one is sure, then the creators have not told a tight, definitive story in the first place. If you are happy to just wonder and never know for sure if you’ve figured it out, this game is interesting. If you like closure, you might want to skip it.

Don't buy this on your phone. You cannot exit a video after playing it. I have to start the whole game over every time I want to exit a video. Please fix this issue.

Does not work on my Pixel. I am excited to play this game and I believe the publishers are working to fix the issue. Any time I play a video, I cannot exit out of that video without restarting the entire game. Will update my review when I can play it!

Doesn't work on Pixel at all and the developer, despite being aware of it, doesn't seem to have done anything to fix the issue.

The title says it all. I don't write reviews (this is my first ever), and I am compelled to share that in spite of the "innovation" or "edge" this "game" may tempt you with, it ultimately does little more than intrigue the user until interest is lost. The acting is subpar, at best. Of course with Leo Dicap winning a GG for his miscast performance in the travesty that is "The Revenant", I am not sure most people will even see how blatantly thespian (and thus bland, since we ain't watching a play) her acting is... It's moot though, cause if this were $.99 then I'd say, buy it, but at the price it's been at, trust me, you may as well find some fulfillment figuring out some answer or getting some concrete sign of progress in an equally interesting game that does not purport to be unique and not feel shafted out of the small fortune which is the cost of Her Story. Honestly, it gets old REAL FAST.

I love FMV games. Unfortunately, this is not a game. Watching clips and figuring out new keywords is cool, but its also the ONLY thing to do. Even the game Desert Bus gave you a point for completing. For this game you simply decide when you've played enough, and THAT is the ending.
  • Apr 12, 2021

I can't play this game because I can't exit videos once they play. The exit button just disappears. That's the main mechanic of the game so it's literally unplayable. Bummer, I was looking forward to it. I'm using a galaxy s21.

Really bummed I bought this and it has a bug that makes it unplayable which hasn't been addressed for months. Google play won't let me refund either so now I'm just stuck with a broken app. Disappointed in both Google Play and Her Story.

There aren’t many games like this. The developer came up with a second game with more characters but it was less involving and the story line was weaker, I thought. I really liked this game, I liked the storyline, the writing, the acting. I wish it were part of a series with the same format, one person of interest being interviewed and you comb through the fragments to piece together the truth. I really had a lot of fun with this one. Please send more!

Her Story is a game about watching videos in a police database to piece together the story. The interface is an old computer operating system, mainly using search terms to uncover more pieces of the video. The game is about discovery, with some surprising plot twists along the way. Take notes, be patient, and keep an open mind as you play through Her Story. A game like this is special because it is unlike most games. It makes you think, and it does not reveal everything to you throughout the game.

This is a truly unique mystery game that will leave you wondering what the truth really is. I'm dying to know for certain myself. If you enjoy watching real life murder mysteries on TV, and trying to solve them...you will enjoy this game. But beware, the game does not tell you if you are right or wrong. I've read that the developer created this game with only one correct answer in mind, and I'm glad because I don't like it being left open for interpretation. I want to know the truth!

I played this a few years ago when it first came out, bought the app version as well as the computer, and I'm coming back to it now because I've been thinking about it. It's easily one of the most engaging games I've ever played, the storytelling and the acting have made such an impact on me that I still recommend this game to people on a regular basis. I would love to see a sequel someday, or at least a new game using the same premise.

So after reading reviews and a price drop I had to try it. I was a little confused at first there are no instructions but I caught n quickly remembering what I had read in the reviews. I have another game that I play everyday and have done so for a year....haven't played that game since I picked this one up. I can't seem to put this down . I have figured a lot out rather quickly. It shocked me I guess I hit the right keyword. Threw me off guard though I wasn't prepared for it lol. Great game however I already know I won't get the complete story with this one....I'll have to wait for pt 2 I'm sure...and I want to know 🤔...her story

Many comparisons to Gone Home can be made here, and it's all good. The story is very self aware, keeping things to itself but revealing little tantalizing bits and twisting your perception as it does. There are several a-ha moments that are extremely rewarding. The best part is that the story's progress is completely dependent on the player's approach; the odds that two players experience the game the same way is are very low. The acting can be hit or miss but bravo to the lass for shouldering every bit of spoken and acted dialogue in the entire game.

I've yet to solve the mystery or mysteries behind the game, but the design is already inherently intriguing and the more you search for answers, the more questions arise. The only thing I ask of the iPhone/iPad version is orientation awareness; with the standard iPad Smart Cover the screen is upside-down! The game itself is fantastic; this one minor design flaw does not take away from the game experience itself. Very happy with the purchase.

  • Game good - not worth it Aug 16, 2016

    By Shutting down.
This game has a really good story, a lot of twists and turns and is simply amazing but is not worth $5 and here's why: I just beat the game in an hour or less. Why spend 5 dollars on something that lasts 30 minutes? The story is amazing and I would suggest it to a friend but I would just let them use my phone so they wouldn't waste their money. This game isn't as good as Device 6 (I compare these games together because they are both good story driven games) because Device 6 took days to complete and was $4 - worth the money. If you can blow $5 do it - it's a good short story - if you want a game worth your money - go to year walk or device 6.

Not sure of what this 'game' entails, really just kind of up in arms about it, but its not quite engaging enough for me to want to figure out what the point of this thing is. Maybe I'm just missing something completely, but idk and I'm not concerned enough with whether or not that is the case... uninstalled 4 refund

Does not work on my Pixel. I am excited to play this game and I believe the publishers are working to fix the issue. Any time I play a video, I cannot exit out of that video without restarting the entire game. Will update my review when I can play it!

  • Not really a game. Jun 28, 2015

I'm all for interactive stories, but that would be a loose definition. This is a game in the absolute loosest sense of the word. You type in words to find videos and watch video clips. You don't really have to do anything with them. You don't even really have to pay much attention. You just have to find keywords to find all the clips and once you've found them all, that's it. There's nothing more to it. No real puzzle solving or much of anything. It's not a terrible app, it has some merit, it's well written and the acting is solid. I just don't think it's worth $5. I'd say to wait until it's on sale if you're still interested.

Awesome game on Steam. But do not buy it on phone. You can't bypass starting video. It's been like this months, still no fix, no answers.

Don't buy this on your phone. You cannot exit a video after playing it. I have to start the whole game over every time I want to exit a video. Please fix this issue.

This game is so difficult to run. I play a video and have to restart the app in order to continue. This is unplayable I don't understand how this can exist on a store.

Doesn't work on Pixel at all and the developer, despite being aware of it, doesn't seem to have done anything to fix the issue.

This is not a game. You search through video clips to piece together a story. That is all. There is no end where you see the entire story or have the true story revealed. It is all open to your own interpretation. The interface is not plausible. You are searching archives where you can only see the 5 earliest clips returned by your search terms and no more. The entire game is to guess search words to find all the clips. This might have worked as a small puzzle within an adventure game.

Don't bother if you have a Google Pixel. I thought the bug that freezes the game after exiting videos would be fixed by now, but it's not. Game is still unplayable for Google Pixel users.

Can't play this on a Pixel. Freezes after a few seconds into any video. Last update from this developer seems to be from 2016, so chances of a patch are slim to none. Avoid.

Hasn't been updated since 2016. The game is unplayable unfortunately which is a bummer because I've heard it's good overall. Developers seems to have just let the game go.
