First I want to compliment the person that delivers our paper ON TIME! We went through quite a stretch when the paper was either late or not delivered at all. I always prefer reading an actual paper but had no choice for a while to read the digital edition. I slowly got used to it s I stayed with it. My wife prefers the paper version. However, there is one thing that’s annoying. When starting out be clicking the “e-newspaper “ it opens as two front pages side by side. I finally figured out a work around but I don’t understand why it’s programmed that way.

Overall nice job. When going from article to article however, sometimes the wrong picture loads for a story.

Revising my previous review: I have learned to accept the ads, everyone needs a source of income. My last eat suggestions are just some tweaks for a smoother User Interface: 1. there is no function to close videos once they are viewed, forcing me to close the app and open it again; 2. If the app is suspended, the previous article will not load again, forcing me to close the app and open it again; and 3. I cannot always find the latest articles when searching for their specific titles. If you have a dedicated app development team, these would be great bug fixes to implement if you have no plans to redesign the app.

Why is all this old news right up front each day? I want what’s in theCourant for that day not stuff from January or even December that’s no longer ever relevant! I’m reading both the paper version and the digital version, side-by-side each day, to see whether I want to switch from paper to digital. So far the digital doesn’t measure up. Why? Phyllis Satter

Even after several years, I’m still so disappointed in the Courant’s apps for iPhone & iPad. No where near the content of the physical paper. Lots of old news continues to appear on top of screens. Lots of repeat stories as I scroll. Too heavy with photos stories. Too many good paper apps - get your IT guys to do a real update.

Two things left out of this article 1) the book “Complicity...” while it was research supported by the Courant the names of the writers should have been included: Anne Farrow et al 2) the school project discovering black governors buried at the Ancient Burying Grounds should mention the school and if I remember correctly it was supported by The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving

I am grateful for some of your amazing reporters who are not afraid to ask questions . You need more people of color as reporters and more positive stories of people of color .

It could be better. Not enough sports. Minimal stocks/business and too many AP stories because not enough local reporters.

  • Next to impossible to use... Jun 14, 2020

... unless what you’re looking for happens to be right in front of you. I get better results searching their Facebook page. They used to have a clickable front page which was great, but the only way to access the rest of the paper now is a category bar at the top of the page. So there’s literally no way to just read the paper from front to back. The search function is unusable. Results come up with a photo (!) and a short headline but no date which is completely worthless. For example, there was an update on an accident in Cheshire two days ago that killed a child. When I tried to find the original article in the search bar even the article I was reading didn’t come up when I typed in “Cheshire”. It’s like trying to find a book in the library with no lights on. Frustrating and awful.

I use this because our paper only shows up about half the time. The app used to be tolerable but yesterday it started to freeze up and has been unusable since then. Now the app won't access the paper at all. It only gives a "web page unavailable" message.

the new version of this app is a complete failure. It will not allow me to download the e-newspaper. i can only view this at home. i can't view it on the road. i would have given it no stars but you need to do one at a minimum.
  • Unclear subscription prices Jan 5, 2020

    By jadayjr
This is a good newspaper burdened by an opaque and deceptive subscription policy. The deal is you sign up at a highly discounted rate and then some months later (not stipulated) your credit card is suddenly charged a significantly higher amount. You call customer service (Phillipines, I think) and they knock down your rate for a few months and the same process is repeated. Nowhere is it possible to find a clear list of rates or any indication of the duration of the rate agreement. So, you are completely at their mercy regarding rate increases and they do not notify you when they increase. The editorial staff would be horrified that this is going on. Seems highly unethical, I think.

Similar experience to other users. Im a paid subscriber and when i click on certain stories it says i need to subscribe. Update window saying " explore new features" constantly pops up. reinstalled app with no success. It needs work.

Can SOMEONE turn off the damn pop up telling me that the app was updated? I got it. After picking no thanks, the pop up should quit but no, it pops up again and again and again and again....
  • Irritating ads even for paid subscribers Nov 27, 2018

    By Yatesa01
The ads have become much more invasive recently, even when I am already paying to access the articles. I could live with the ads injected between and in the stories, but the auto-playing video ads, which are very startling, especially when you are trying to read in a quiet place, and the full screen ads that I have to sit through when I first open the app, are really obnoxious. Please choose a business model and stop alienating your paying customers.

  • Simply awful Nov 19, 2020

Does the IT department that supports the Hartford Courant have no pride. The app is clumsy, loaded with ads, even though you are paying a subscription. It is slow and clumsy and the design comes from a different planet. My current issue? It won’t let me use it because it wants me to subscribe. I have a subscription and have had one for 30+ years. Does not have a login option though it once did. I am in IT. This is a classic example of ineptitude and is an embarrassment and it never improves.

  • App Crashes a lot May 2, 2018

This app seems to crash a lot under ios11. It either locks up in an article and not scroll, or it freezes then shuts itself down. Nice to be able to read the Courant out of state, but this app has stability issues.

  • Horrible app with loud commercials Oct 23, 2018

    By Fpzjr
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to read the news in a quiet waiting room or at night and all of a sudden, an ad starts playing with very loud audio. I understand advertisements are needed to help pay for the news, but playing an ad without me tapping on it is ridiculous. I have made many complaints, all falling on deaf ears. I finally canceled my subscription.
