  • Forvo is amazing, but a learner should be careful Jun 4, 2018

    By Raheemooh
My first language is Arabic, I’ve noticed a problem with some “category work” and “spelling small vowels -Harakat-“ and those problems could be fetal if you don’t notice. A collage could become a kidney! And vice versa, hundreds of words could be contaminated like that. Otherwise, the service is incredibly useful, it helps me with my second language -English-, also with my hobby languages (Japanese, Korean) and also with any sudden interest in how a word is pronounced in any language. Finally, about the app. I really find the design more comfortable than the website. But I have two complaint: First being an able to record my reading for a word that has been recorded. Second, I can’t report or edit a word writing wrong or easily confused between two meanings; sometimes I want to make both pronunciations and writing much clearer.

It helps a lot to get the CORRECT PRONUNCIATION, but you gotta make sure the word is written correctly, since the app doesn't have a built in dictionary, but LET'S BE CLEAR, this is not the app's responsibility, it's yours, so make sure you have a nice dictionary or Google translator before trying your words on FORVO.

  • I did expect a bit more... Feb 7, 2020

I have used the website for years and found immense value and help. I figured that I would buy the app for a slightly more convenient use. For $2.99, I did expect a lot more functionality and content than what is available. Definitely not worth the cost, in my opinion. One problem that I have come across is that recording new words is hit or miss on the app, as maybe 30% of the words and phrases came out loud and clear enough to be worthwhile. All of these recordings were done one after another, in the same quiet environment, with the same microphone. I’ve made other recordings with this same mic with no issues, and have had 3-4 hour long conversations, again with no issues, before and after recording words for Forvo. Either the recording or the playback is having issues, but this problem only seems to exist on the Forvo app.

Being able to find actual people pronouncing words instead of computer generated voices is wonderful for learning correct pronunciation. I am studying the Russian language and there are subtleties that computer just don't get (yet). This app is still buggy and in an hour of use crashed a few times. But that is ok because it is easy to just start it up again and continue searching for pronunciations. This app deserves high marks in spite of its flaws. Bravo!

  • Great App, but please add Landscape. Feb 3, 2018

This is a very useful tool to help with pronunciation. The only feature missing is landscape view. I use this app on my iPad which I use almost entirely in landscape mode, so it would be nice to have that feature. Otherwise, I’m happy with the app.

Have to make an account to use the app, and every method of making an account was denied. It said my email is invalid, then when I tried logging in with Facebook or Google it said user inactive.

You can't access app's content without letting her to know your exact location. Basically you have to write your address. Without this you are lacking content you already paid for such as saving some words to check them later. It was the purpose of buying this app instead of using it online. I had to register using VPN to maintain some privacy which I didn't wanted to share. It is not right that I had to look for such solution.

  • why would I use this? Jan 24, 2018

    By Blue Pine
UPDATE: It's been over a year, so I gave it another try on my iPad. Looks like they're getting closer to being useful, but there was no way to favorite a word. Perhaps it was hidden under the three dots at the right. HOWEVER, every time I tapped on the three dots, IT CRASHED AND CLOSED. So I had to pull out an old iPhone that I never use, download an older version of the app to that, and suddenly the three dots worked, and I was able to favorite a word. So, since I don't want to use the older iPhone, and since this app crashes on my iPad, I'm going to delete it again on my iPad, and hope they keep working on it. And I hope they'll eventually make it possible to allow me to save favorite pronunciations on my device. It they keep working on this, and make it useful, I'll give it five stars. But for now, down to one star. PREVIOUS REVIEW: Perhaps my expectations were too high. I can't really find any reason to use this. The website is easier, and better. I'll probably end up deleting this, unless they provide more functionality, like letting me save my favorite pronunciations on my device so that I can re-listen over and over without logging in. Now THAT would be helpful as I try to learn a new language.

  • Forvo is great but app needs Work Aug 31, 2019

Forvo is super awesome, but there are a handful of easy fixes that would make the app a lot better: The UI in the search screen is tiny and isn’t even close to utilizing the entire screen. Poor design. There’s not button to quickly clear out the search bar. This is a simple efficiency issue. I’d rather not press backspace a bunch of times. After typing a word into the search bar, pressing “done” on the keypad should be programmed to activate the search, but instead it just minimizes the keyboard and then you have to press “Search”. Another easily fixable efficiency issue. It doesn’t need to know my location. It needs to know where I’m from. My language variant is not reliably tied to where I happen to be in the world at any given moment. My language variant is tied to where I’m from and where I’ve lived for a long time. So instead of asking for your location, the app just needs to ask you where you’re from and where you’ve lived for longer than a year or so.

After years of not using this (when I heavily used it once) I find myself coming back to find the pronunciation of aponeuroses where I could not find it anywhere else for the plural version. If you find yourself unable to find something on here, just use Google Translate as a last resort.

This is a really helpful app for me. There is a feature to play audios for all favourite words. So I can listen to all words. I hope I can make a favourite list of 1000 words. I use the app daily. Thank you so much for making such a great app :)

Extremely helpful when learning a new language and being able to pronouce words that may be difficult to nail their pronounciations as a new learner! Definitely would recommend! It helped me pronounce jongen in dutch by hearing several native dutch speakers, both male and female, pronounce this word. Much better than the system computer generated voice that often accompanies apps and language learning softwares!

As an audiobook book narrator, I have used Forvo as a great resource for years. There is only one drawback in my mind to this app. It is portrait alignment only. For some reason the designers haven’t added a landscape option if you turn your iPad to the side.

This is a very helpful app when reading a manuscript with words from other languages, seems to work well so far, no complaints yet, and has had my word available about 50% of the time, and I am working with Greek mythology so not too bad, I guess

Search bar needs to be permanently embedded in the same page as the results, so that we can search for a new word without having to hit the magnifying glass button. And as soon as we press on the search button the keyboard needs to automatically pop up. Searching for new words to be seamless and requires little effort as possible.

Would be better if would work in landscape mode on the iPad, most of use use the iPad more like a computer now and i have disconnect the keypad to use. Wish the most popular recording of a word would come up first and not have to go down through several menus to retrieve. Otherwise good app for language learners.

My main complaints with the app interface are: not sure how often it is supposed to synchronize but it can take days, lack of control over your lists, and for some reason phrases can’t appear on your phone app, only words. It’s useful if you know what you want out of it, but come on guys, you can do better.

"option not available for this phrase" What is this supposed to mean, except not being able to save some phrases in favorites? It appears in a toast when I click certain pronunciations Sound recordings are not normalized. Some you can barely hear, you dial the volume to max, the next one breaks your ear

Having more than 100 words of your favourites visible in the app would be nice. Kinda makes the app useless as I still have to go through the ball ache of going on the site to view more than 100 random words from my favourites. Would have been 4 stars but since I had to pay for the app, I am a little more annoyed. Will update review to positive when my issue is fixed as this is the only problem but its major.

the app is okay overall, but why are the usernames not visible immediately in the search results, and why is it impossible to view the speaker's location information, if both those things are readily available on the website? it doesn't make sense, and I got a refund because of that, sorry

Frustrating. Can't log in without setting a location. This feels intrusive. When I relented and switched on location in order to log in, the location was selected as an unknown neighbour's house and postcode. This is unacceptable! I want to use the the app, and have paid to do so. I am not happy, and would welcome help as to how I can do so without setting a location, or using someone else's house number and postcode! really disappointing, as i want to listen to first language welsh speakers.
