  • Best scanning and OCR app that exists! Dec 8, 2018

    By djlmx
I’ve been using FineScannerPRO for a few years now and it just keeps getting better! Scanning is simple with the iPad or iPhone and OCR is very accurate. I’ve been using it to recognize text in both English and Spanish, both of which work great. The new page area recognition features make it easier than ever to scan pages with little or no manual adjustments. Recognized documents can be downloaded in several useful file formats including MS Word, RTF, and plain text. I now do all my scanning and OCR on my iPad instead of my dedicated scanner. It is just so much faster and easier. You can also make a “photocopy” of any document just by printing the result of your scan. I would highly recommend this app!

I have well over a hundred recipe books on the shelves, plus many hundreds of individual recipes from the New York Times and elsewhere in three-ring notebooks. I needed a way to get printed contents into my AnyList recipe and grocery shopping list app. FineScanner Pro is this home cook’s perfect OCR dream app for moving ingredients, preparation, cooking times, servings and nutrition data and more from shelf or binder via the camera and into my device. If I need to, with FineScanner’s help I can do meal planning from among my favorite recipes while sitting in the grocery store parking lot... A capability once limited to expensive laptop and desktop software is now within affordable reach of the stovetop!

Garbage OCR. But as a scanner to make pdf it's great.

In 1988, I purchased one of the first OCR scanners on the market for $12,000. Since that time, I have purchased several OCR desktop applications. But none of these can measure up to the ABBYY FineReader PDF Pro. It is without peer in the OCR scanning market. I can now do better, and more efficiently, on my iPad what any desktop software can do. I highly recommend this product to anyone needing to convert image to text or convert between a variety of formats. You will not be disappointed in the outstanding performance of this app. Earlier I did have a problem with the app, but the support staff resolved it promptly, for which I am grateful.<br> FROM THE DEVELOPER (Jun 7, 2021): /r/n Hello ____, I'm sorry for delay with the reply. I frequently receive scanned PDF's in image format only that I need to markup and comment, which is only fully possible with recognized text. No other PDF scanner app that I have found, despite many having otherwise excellent features, allows you to import PDF files and then export the text recognized files to another app, except for this one. This single app has now made my iPad a true laptop replacement. Thanks for a fantastic, simple to use app that does exactly what it promises.

I am a history graduate student who needs to scan documents as quickly as possible in the archives. This app has everything I could ever need to accomplish the mission — auto capture, OCR, automatic cloud sync, and (most importantly!) the stability to scan in massive documents. This app has never crashed on me, not even when I scanned a folder with 400 pages of correspondence into a single PDF file! I recommend this app as a superior alternative to all of my colleagues who contemplate purchasing a handheld scanner.

Question to developers: how can I delete all my old scans? I scan and send a lot, so deleting them one by one is not possible. Especially when using the color filter. I wish I had this app a year ago before I paid a kinkos $40 to scan 50 sheets of oratory for me.

It works better than other apps I have tried. The interface is not quite convenient: no "open document" button to load an existing pdf for recognition (but you can do it using "share" function from file explorer). Nevertheless it saves lot of time recognizing complex formatted documents (with digit and text tables, lists, pictures, columns, etc)

Not a good app to scan books. App doesn't recognize book edges and cuts off corners. Also many pages are blurry and many re-takes are necessary. Finally, I scanned a poor copy of a 285 page book, but it wouldn't share to email or anywhere else - just stalled in processing. Very disappointing. I might as well just take pictures of the books and save the $60.

Do you want a high quality scan that is also searchable? You are out of luck here. You have to accept a low quality compressed image if you want OCR. ABBYY says this is because of pre-processing. Other companies provide both. I am guessing that the OCR is done on their server which is why it is compressed for transit. This may also be a privacy and compliance issue for some users. ABBYY has not responded to my recent query. Even the OCR is not tops in my testing. I use the business card scanner by ABBYY, but Finescanner is simply not useful software in its current form.

Update: after spending $50 on this app, they are still spamming me and trying to now get a subscription fee. This is a terrible app and not worth the money. I purchased this in order to quickly scan several cookbooks that I have. This app has several flaws: -Poor edge detection Once you take photos of the book pages, you must go through and manually pick the edge of the book. This is tedious and other apps do a much better job with much less manual intervention. -Long processing time After the edges of the book are marked, the images must be processed and sent to their servers. This seems odd and unnecessary. It also took a long time to process for just a few dozen pages. -inaccurate OCR Even after all this, it still made many mistakes which are time consuming to correct. I am extremely disappointed with this app and do not recommend others purchase it.

After taking the pictures, you can't make zoom in order to see if they are good. You can see the quality of the pictures only after you saved to PDF. If you disabled the option to save the original file, if the pictures need to be cropped or retaken, you have to scan everything from the beginning. Also, even if you opted not to save the original file, after a few days you will find a copy in your gallery and if you delete them, you will lose the PDF files from the app.

Using the lower resolution of my s20 cameras. Can't import photos. Notably lower quality than free competitors like adobe and officelens. I switched even if i paid for this app, just because of the quality and other features like cleanup, where you fix the edges.

It captures the documents really fast, straightens the edges and fixes color, so documents look like documents, not photos. The flow is really smooth. I connected it with my Box account, so the docs get saved right into the Box and are available immediately on all devices. Saves a ton of time.

  • Needs additional page formats Oct 26, 2018

    By BrownlowRanch
I use this app almost daily; it is one of my all-time favorites. I just wish it had additional page formats, as I frequently need to scan ledger size (11"x17") and larger architectural plans and the app only has 4 standard sizes from which to choose. Add these page formats, or the ability to manually set page size, and I'll re-rate at 5 stars.

I use FineScanner a lot and love that it can save to my dropbox and Google drive. But I have noticed a major quality decrease when I take the picture in FineScanner versus when I take it with my regular camera app and then import it. I wish I didn’t have to do the extra step to get a good quality picture

Works well, but no "select all"!? Seemingly the only way to select all your files is plugging your phone into a computer. There's no viable way to select all your files to share them. This is a glaring omission.

The OCR is pretty weak. Not sure it's worth the price I paid. Scanning itself is fine but capturing text from printed book pages wasn't great. Every fourth word or so was messed up. I imagine this wouldn't be helpful for anything handwritten either but I haven't tried.

The server is working again, but I’m still upset that prior to purchasing this app there was no indication that the processing would be done on a server instead of on device. Phones are pretty powerful these days and FineReader on the Mac doesn’t need to use a server. It means I have to use a different scanning app when working with sensitive legal documents on the go. Fortunately there’s a lot of competition in this area.
