  • Missing key features. Feb 27, 2018

    By Dan Dunmire
Review Update: Thank you developers for the quick response and feedback. While I understand the need to update the app; it would take far more time to update the app to replace the 2.59:1 with 3:2 than it would to replace the text in the literature and on the site to reflect that change as well. The manual being a compiled PDF shouldn’t take the time it has taken to address this and on the site itself it still lists 2.59:1 as a framing option. I do thank you for the clarification and quick response. Original Review: Everything I have seen directed me to Filmic Pro for my handheld cinematography. Which to me was a massive testament to this app. $25 for the app and all of its features is a great price. My issue with it is that the entire reason I purchased this powerhouse was to shoot in 2.59:1; an option replaced on my iPhone 8 Plus with 3:2. There’s no literature I can find for how to get this option back; nothing in the manual; and nothing in the Aspect Ratio video on the site. I’ll keep the app as I love the lighting controls as well as the dynamic focal point control; this app gives a fantastic angle of control to my cinematography that I no longer need my Canon or Nikon to achieve.

I do like this app as it gives me alot if control over my videos. HOWEVER it's got some bugs in it. Here are my complaints so far. 1. My audio doesn't sinc up most of the time. It can off as much as 14 frames. This takes time in post to fix and ultimately time that doesn't need to be wasted if it weren't for that glitch. 2. Recently my footage is upside down. This wasn't always the case but just a recent development. I can fix it in post but I still feel like it's wasted time.

  • Fantastic! But I'd love to see a few more crop guides! May 18, 2020

I really do love this app, and I don't want to come across as negative - this is THE best filmmaking app in existence, nothing is better when it comes to smartphone videography! But I have one feature that I would love to see in this app which would make it perfect, and that would be the option to film in more aspect ratios than what's currently available. I'd love to see 1.85:1 and 1.50:1 for example, but I have one very specific request, and that would be the ability to frame for a 1.66:1 aspect ratio - which was actually possible in previous versions of this app if what I've seen is correct - because this is my absolute favorite aspect ratio for filming my projects. I don't know how difficult this would be to add these feature into the app, but it would be my dream come true to see more crop guides introduced and a return of 15:9 (1.66:1). I hate to sound negative, especially when this app is already practically perfect, and I hate to go on about my personal issues instead of talking about improvements which could help everybody across the board (though hopefully other people would take advantage of these new crop guides, should they be added), but this would absolutely make my day. Thank you for all the work you put into this wonderful app!

Personal use or business, this app WILL benefit you. If you're invested enough in the digital film age, this will prove useful someway, somehow. The cost of cameras and editing software ALONE should convince you to get this app. Live analytics, manual and auto focus, ease of access to change exposure, audio sensitivity control, guides, frame rate options, a company that listens and interacts with the community-- the list goes on, I couldn't be bothered. I WISH the native camera app on smart phones was this intuitive. The fact that I live in a day and age where I can practically have a movie camera in my pocket is astonishing, all for such a generous price (granted you have a phone at all. If you're reading this, I'm left to assume that you do). Buying this will NOT turn you into Christoper Nolan, but the HANDS ON advantages that this app provides you are a no brainer. Quentin Tarantino didn't have a movie maker in his pocket growing up. But YOU can. As someone who strives to live in the entertainment industry, this is a must for me. I have gotten to experience so much from this app with my PHONE that I would not have otherwise experienced without investing in a thousand dollar camera. If you're interested enough in film, are super low budget, and want an introductory taste? Buy this app now.

I love all the features, but video from this app is ALWAYS noisy compared to the stock Samsung app's on the Note 10+. Update: With the new Note 20 Ultra's camera capabilities, this app is obsolete. The output is a mess compared to the stock Samsung app. Anything zoomed over 1x is a pixel fest. If you switch to manual focus, good luck getting anything to focus at all. Really not worth the price of admission.

On a Nokia 8 it works ok apart from the audio which whistles and generate weird feedback noise. On a Sony Xperia 5 it is unstable, particularly when using an external mic and using the Remote app (via the Nokia 8). Most annoying are frame rate issues, recording at a supposed 30fps actually records at 28.831fps (what the hell use is that?) or at a variable frame rate averaging at 29fps which is even worse. The remote app is it's most redeeming feature, Cinema Pro or MCPRO24FPS otherwise better.

  • Unstable app. Crashes too often on iPad pro and iPhone 11 Oct 2, 2020

The app has only ever been stable with built in device microphones. Hopelessly unstable with sound interfaces and sound sources that are perfectly stable with other apps. App destroys live event video with error messages claiming that it cannot save to camera role after it has been given permission and when there is over 100GB of storage space to spare. So unstable that it takes at least three Apple mobile devices working in parallel to achieve the result we would have gotten from a single major brand digital camera. The app is only suited to very short video clips where multiple takes are possible. It destroys live event projects because it’s too unstable for those, and too easily crashes for numerous reasons, even a mic battery failing or a mic pulling loose. There is never any graceful recovery, it just wrecks the video. Support can’t help with any of these project ruining software design defects. A major rewrite of the software to make it reliable will be needed.

  • You get 10 stars Sep 11, 2020

Best app on the market. I got some major ideas for this app. Send me your email. I’ve used many apps and this is flawless. I’m a reggae producer who started video recording. I use a gimbal. Filmic pro. Filmic remote. Mic and light using only my iPhone. The videos are speechless. But I see some ideas that could lock the market. Expand the lens to 6x like the app for my gimbal. Add under community access to sign in a Client to access their camera but record the video into my filmic pro. That way I can record people from around the world in high quality. Make the app access more features on the gimbals. And a story mode like the app for my gimbal. That stitches video together into a movie. I would give you 9000 stars. I compared a few footages from filmic and the iPhone camera. No comparison. Filmic is like having a expensive dslr camera in a iPhone. Ohhh another thing. Add filters in a in app purchase for the lens. Another thing I thought of. Under audio. Add access to iaa apps. Like MicSwap. And we can swap the mic in the video to different mics. And filmic would be Hollywood. Oscar. Etc etc.

I really enjoyed your app until I was no longer able to manually control focus when using selfie mode this was something that was really appealing to me when I bought the app, now I'm left feeling disappointed. I hope it's fixable and fairly soon! As you can imagine it's putting things on hold. Once fixed definitely 5 stars but for now 4 :(

  • Indie Filmmaker Must Have App! May 9, 2018

    By Actartactivist
I’ve been using filmicpro for years (back when the app was $1.99 and iPhone 4’s were all the rage!). I was excited about the idea of iPhone filmmaking then and made a number of projects for the iPhone film festival circuit. Then I stepped away from iPhone filmmaking to focus on other indie films with a variety of camera types (not mobile phone related.). After a few years, I came back to this app and iPhone filmmaking because I love the flexibility of it. I purchased the new $9.99 additional feature with LOG as a setting option and I have to say, I am SO SO pleased to see FilMIC pro has continued to update their app and make iPhone filmmaking more of a legitimate and credible option for the independent filmmaker! The newest features with adjusting the ISO, focus pull, light balance, etc is really awesome! With a few options in lens attachments in addition to this app I really love how versatile it is becoming. It’s still not going to give you the performance of a DSLR or studio level camera, but it is definitely a viable option for filmmakers now! And I love it!

  • Removed the promotional link in the main menu (y) Sep 12, 2019

    By rallyfan1234567890
The previous version has a promotional link front and center in the top-level main menu, which I think was inappropriate, in particular when there is also an Information / Support page which would have been perfect for that. That’s great. However the app still does not work with the Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal, which has been widely available everywhere for several weeks now. The app connects, but the gimbal functions don’t work, for example the Rec button on the gimbal changes the volume, zoom does nothing, etc, so the DJI protocol changes and Filmic currently lags a little behind. In addition to the obvious, it would be nice to add a tracking mode that controls the gimbal motion from the app, where we could drag an arbitrary rectangle anywhere in the frame, and the shot would keep whatever is there at that position in the frame (specifically, not necessarily centered!) - that would be the next level of awesomeness! Thanks for the update, yet already looking forward to the next one.

I just wanted to provide an update to what I wrote a month ago (below), as I've been using Filmic Pro quite a bit in that time and have a much better handle on how it performs. I've increased my rating to a four, as once you get used to it, it's really a very good app. I normally use a BMPCC4K and edit in DaVinci Resolve and have used results from my phone in Resolve and I'm quite pleased as to how I can integrate video from my phone with video from my BMPCC4K. Despite the significant differences between the two cameras, the results can blend in well. I'm still hoping that Filmic Pro can update the app to allow shutter angle as a default setting with all fps choices. Give me that and it's a five star app. I just bought both the Filmic Pro and the Cinematographer Kit for my Xiaomi Redmi Note 9s and both work perfectly. A quick test with the Evaluator app indicated that all would be good and so it was. The only thing I can't work out is how to get the focus circle and exposure square both to appear in the centre of the screen on start up and the exposure square to be a bit larger. Additionally, I'm not sure whether the app sets the shutter angle automatically to 180 degrees, for when I open the manual control, the shutter speed is never twice the fps, but usually much lower. After a couple of days use, there are two issues that disappoint greatly. Firstly, the fact that you can't set a shutter angle and have it default to 180 degrees of the fps set is a huge omission. Secondly, whenever you set shutter speed/ISO, and return to the main screen, the settings revert to what it was before adjusting or you can't refocus/re-expose. Two major shortfalls for a pro app. I wanted to provide an update on this app. Firstly, other than the issues I noted, this app really does make the phone video work so much better. Editing in DaVinci Resolve produces excellent results and would be outstanding if the camera in the phone was one of the higher end ones. I've also been in contact with Filmic Pro and explained my issues, hopefully more clearly. If they can implement what I've suggested, then this app will offer features similar to a cinema camera.

  • FilMic Pro: Sure, it’s at least worth the money. Jan 23, 2020

    By Dudesaboy
FilMic Pro is great with iPhones. On the iPhone 7 Plus alone, it’s able to shoot 120 Frames Per Second (FPS), and just imagine what it could accomplish with future smartphones. On the new iPhone 11, it can even shoot 240 FPS. That’s totally unheard of for any phone camera. One thing I would ask the developers to do is not limit all of FilMic’s functions to the iPhone 11 Pro. I mean, granted, I’m sure a lot of Apple fans have the Pro models, but some of the functions are restricted to just these fans that I speak of. For example, the iPhone 11, the phone which I currently have, has a wide and ultra wide camera. The FilMic app has no problem zooming in, but it will not zoom out. What good is and ultra wide camera if I can’t use it? The Pro model phones can zoom out in the app, though. Also, I would like to see automatic focus. The focus is only controllable by the app user, so this ends up with slight imperfections. Overall I enjoy using this app, and can’t wait to see what future updates can accomplish.

I purchased this app because I had heard many great things about it and I will say that I was very impressed with a lot of the tricks of this app has to offer. However what’s been disappointing me over and over again is it the app has been crashing when using high frame rates, and not even for that long of a period. It will freeze when entering the review portion of the app where I would view the videos I’ve taken. I’ve also had times where I am switching resolutions and the app goes into mirror mode, which I’m sure is not supposed to happen. The image becomes upside down and reversed left to right making it impossible to record until I shut down the app completely and sometimes even have to turn off my phone. I have had the focus and exposure dials randomly start turning on me and I’ve also had exposure settings changed even though I have had them locked in. Overall I’m pretty disappointed because I never had these issues with ProMovie recorder which was only three dollars and I had heard amazing things about this app. These bugs could get taken care of I would be 100% satisfied because there are a lot of great things this app provides but I’m just not there yet. Thanks guys.

I would love to give this app a 5 star rating as it has many pro level functions and features. But the pixelation issue that occurs when zooming (something which doesn't happen with any of the 15 other camera apps I've tried) means it unusable for me. So if you need to zoom be wary. Otherwise this app may be perfect for you. (Tested on S7, S9, Pixel 3, Huawei Mate 10 and P30).

I bought the app with the cinematography kit. It has good features but it seems to have a lot of noise compared to the native One Plus 7T camera app. The log V2 mode is good but it seems the dynamic mode has some issues now compared to when I first bought the app and the cinematography kit. The app gives you a lot of control over things but the video captured is too noisy and is kinda not good. I hope it gets fixed soon.
