I have expected so much from this app. It indeed gives a lot of options to control your camera. I even bought Zhyiun smooth 4 BECAUSE of this app to be able to control it. I am constantly having issues. Timelapse files corrupted (after reinstall now it works), the app is heating up the phone extremely (have to turn everything else off) BUT the biggest issue, and the reason why I am considering asking for refund, is the skipping in random times when recording. It got better after the update but still it is there. Doesn't matter I charge battery full, empty the space, give it the highest priority, reduce the bitrate, change codec, it JUST SKIPPS and this sucks a lot. Who wants to watch skippy video? I use One Plus Nord 8GB ram... I am starting to hate this app. (However I really want to use this app as it has great potential). No word in the official support related to this issue.

  • Fantastic! But I'd love to see a few more crop guides! May 18, 2020

I really do love this app, and I don't want to come across as negative - this is THE best filmmaking app in existence, nothing is better when it comes to smartphone videography! But I have one feature that I would love to see in this app which would make it perfect, and that would be the option to film in more aspect ratios than what's currently available. I'd love to see 1.85:1 and 1.50:1 for example, but I have one very specific request, and that would be the ability to frame for a 1.66:1 aspect ratio - which was actually possible in previous versions of this app if what I've seen is correct - because this is my absolute favorite aspect ratio for filming my projects. I don't know how difficult this would be to add these feature into the app, but it would be my dream come true to see more crop guides introduced and a return of 15:9 (1.66:1). I hate to sound negative, especially when this app is already practically perfect, and I hate to go on about my personal issues instead of talking about improvements which could help everybody across the board (though hopefully other people would take advantage of these new crop guides, should they be added), but this would absolutely make my day. Thank you for all the work you put into this wonderful app!

Personal use or business, this app WILL benefit you. If you're invested enough in the digital film age, this will prove useful someway, somehow. The cost of cameras and editing software ALONE should convince you to get this app. Live analytics, manual and auto focus, ease of access to change exposure, audio sensitivity control, guides, frame rate options, a company that listens and interacts with the community-- the list goes on, I couldn't be bothered. I WISH the native camera app on smart phones was this intuitive. The fact that I live in a day and age where I can practically have a movie camera in my pocket is astonishing, all for such a generous price (granted you have a phone at all. If you're reading this, I'm left to assume that you do). Buying this will NOT turn you into Christoper Nolan, but the HANDS ON advantages that this app provides you are a no brainer. Quentin Tarantino didn't have a movie maker in his pocket growing up. But YOU can. As someone who strives to live in the entertainment industry, this is a must for me. I have gotten to experience so much from this app with my PHONE that I would not have otherwise experienced without investing in a thousand dollar camera. If you're interested enough in film, are super low budget, and want an introductory taste? Buy this app now.

  • FilMic Pro: Sure, it’s at least worth the money. Jan 23, 2020

    By Dudesaboy
FilMic Pro is great with iPhones. On the iPhone 7 Plus alone, it’s able to shoot 120 Frames Per Second (FPS), and just imagine what it could accomplish with future smartphones. On the new iPhone 11, it can even shoot 240 FPS. That’s totally unheard of for any phone camera. One thing I would ask the developers to do is not limit all of FilMic’s functions to the iPhone 11 Pro. I mean, granted, I’m sure a lot of Apple fans have the Pro models, but some of the functions are restricted to just these fans that I speak of. For example, the iPhone 11, the phone which I currently have, has a wide and ultra wide camera. The FilMic app has no problem zooming in, but it will not zoom out. What good is and ultra wide camera if I can’t use it? The Pro model phones can zoom out in the app, though. Also, I would like to see automatic focus. The focus is only controllable by the app user, so this ends up with slight imperfections. Overall I enjoy using this app, and can’t wait to see what future updates can accomplish.

Useless after update. Recording is choppy and stutters even at a normal frame rate of 24 fps. Anything higher than that and the app crashes and tells me to reset to default settings, which I've done many times but to no avail. I now have an expensive app on my phone which is completely and utterly useless. Would uninstall if I hadn't already paid money for it.

Similar to another review, timelapse was working fine til several days ago, now it doesn't at all. It will say it has recorded but when you go to play it back, it has only saved less than a second of jerky footage. Tried cleaning up phone, deleting and reinstalling but same issue. Only thing I really use it for and now it doesnt work at all. Surprised if it is a known issue, why it hasnt been fixed.

There is one reason I was interested in Filmic Pro: Fully manual exposure control. This is not actually possible with Filmic. You can lock the shutter, lock white balance, lock everything down... and as your scene changes, so does the exposure. This isn’t a problem if your scene is very static and does not change at all. However, let’s say you have a shot that begins with a well lit subject, and you want to follow them as they move through a dark hallway, or a subject that moves in front of a bright window: suddenly the image dims or brightens, ignoring your locked exposure settings. From what I have read, this is caused by Apple’s Dynamic Tone Mapping, which forces these adjustments, and that there is nothing Filmic can do about it. For that reason, I sympathize with Filmic if this is caused by Apple and there is nothing developers can do about it. Regardless, the result is that I have no true manual exposure control on my iPhone. This is a dealbreaker, as some of the shots shift exposure mid shot, becoming unacceptable for use. I was coming around to the idea that for my purposes, new model iPhones could be an acceptable platform for shooting video. After months of experimenting, I have concluded this is not the case.

  • Unstable app. Crashes too often on iPad pro and iPhone 11 Oct 2, 2020

The app has only ever been stable with built in device microphones. Hopelessly unstable with sound interfaces and sound sources that are perfectly stable with other apps. App destroys live event video with error messages claiming that it cannot save to camera role after it has been given permission and when there is over 100GB of storage space to spare. So unstable that it takes at least three Apple mobile devices working in parallel to achieve the result we would have gotten from a single major brand digital camera. The app is only suited to very short video clips where multiple takes are possible. It destroys live event projects because it’s too unstable for those, and too easily crashes for numerous reasons, even a mic battery failing or a mic pulling loose. There is never any graceful recovery, it just wrecks the video. Support can’t help with any of these project ruining software design defects. A major rewrite of the software to make it reliable will be needed.

Fixed! Problem was the terrible HDR mode. Samsung galaxy note 10+ manual shutter speed does nothing. Locking iso and rotating the shutter speed dial does absolutely nothing. Locking shutter speed and rotating iso changes shutter speed (and maybe iso too, unsure). I can see it's changing the shutter speed because increasing or decreasing iso fixes or worsens flickering of artificial lights. This renders the app at least partially useless for me.. And where I'm living, it's a very expensive app.

  • You get 10 stars Sep 11, 2020

Best app on the market. I got some major ideas for this app. Send me your email. I’ve used many apps and this is flawless. I’m a reggae producer who started video recording. I use a gimbal. Filmic pro. Filmic remote. Mic and light using only my iPhone. The videos are speechless. But I see some ideas that could lock the market. Expand the lens to 6x like the app for my gimbal. Add under community access to sign in a Client to access their camera but record the video into my filmic pro. That way I can record people from around the world in high quality. Make the app access more features on the gimbals. And a story mode like the app for my gimbal. That stitches video together into a movie. I would give you 9000 stars. I compared a few footages from filmic and the iPhone camera. No comparison. Filmic is like having a expensive dslr camera in a iPhone. Ohhh another thing. Add filters in a in app purchase for the lens. Another thing I thought of. Under audio. Add access to iaa apps. Like MicSwap. And we can swap the mic in the video to different mics. And filmic would be Hollywood. Oscar. Etc etc.

  • Indie Filmmaker Must Have App! May 9, 2018

    By Actartactivist
I’ve been using filmicpro for years (back when the app was $1.99 and iPhone 4’s were all the rage!). I was excited about the idea of iPhone filmmaking then and made a number of projects for the iPhone film festival circuit. Then I stepped away from iPhone filmmaking to focus on other indie films with a variety of camera types (not mobile phone related.). After a few years, I came back to this app and iPhone filmmaking because I love the flexibility of it. I purchased the new $9.99 additional feature with LOG as a setting option and I have to say, I am SO SO pleased to see FilMIC pro has continued to update their app and make iPhone filmmaking more of a legitimate and credible option for the independent filmmaker! The newest features with adjusting the ISO, focus pull, light balance, etc is really awesome! With a few options in lens attachments in addition to this app I really love how versatile it is becoming. It’s still not going to give you the performance of a DSLR or studio level camera, but it is definitely a viable option for filmmakers now! And I love it!

On a Nokia 8 it works ok, on a Sony Xperia 5 it is now finally fairly stable, particularly when using an external mic and using the Remote app (via the Nokia 8). Most annoying are frame rate issues, recording at a supposed 30fps actually records at 28.831fps (what the hell use is that?) or at a variable frame rate averaging at 29fps which is even worse. The remote app is it's killer feature. The recent addition of 10bit recording is welcome, albeit late. I use a 32bit DAC USB audio adspter.

Google found the issue to be with filmic pro app, the fix was simple yet tedious, but I found response from filmic here unprofessional. Lack of interest on helping of directing a client to possible solution. I only get 150 characters more then you dear customer support, if I could express my issue in 3 short sentences, you could have directed me to your faq page with a link to a troubleshooting step. App is fixed now (Google fixed it). Back to solid 4 starts, but a bad taste left in my mouth.

I bought the Cinematographer's Toolkit for $10.99 and it BROKE Filmic Pro, all I get is a black screen, attempts to change exposure do nothing. I can't even uninstall the Toolkit. :-( Update: after emailing CS, I rebooted my phone and reset Filmic settings to defaults. Now the app appears to be working again and I can now use the flat profiles from the Toolkit, so all is well. However, if rebooting and resetting are necessary, that should have been in the instructions!!!

I purchased this app because I had heard many great things about it and I will say that I was very impressed with a lot of the tricks of this app has to offer. However what’s been disappointing me over and over again is it the app has been crashing when using high frame rates, and not even for that long of a period. It will freeze when entering the review portion of the app where I would view the videos I’ve taken. I’ve also had times where I am switching resolutions and the app goes into mirror mode, which I’m sure is not supposed to happen. The image becomes upside down and reversed left to right making it impossible to record until I shut down the app completely and sometimes even have to turn off my phone. I have had the focus and exposure dials randomly start turning on me and I’ve also had exposure settings changed even though I have had them locked in. Overall I’m pretty disappointed because I never had these issues with ProMovie recorder which was only three dollars and I had heard amazing things about this app. These bugs could get taken care of I would be 100% satisfied because there are a lot of great things this app provides but I’m just not there yet. Thanks guys.

  • Great unless loses footage Aug 11, 2018

    By goblin89
99% of the time (rough guess) footage gets saved and the app is great to control. It reliably loses footage when phone shuts down mid shoot due to depleted battery, but that can be understood as an edge case. Once after shooting a 2-hour timelapse (a frame each 30 sec) the footage haven’t gotten saved. App didn’t crash, battery was well in the green and storage plenty. Footage never appeared in Photos, seems to exist in app’s built-in roll as a corrupted entry, from where an invalid file can be saved to iCloud Files (I’ll try fiddling with it on laptop later). I don’t know whether it’s out of the realm of possibility given iOS APIs but as an engineer I would try ensuring the footage gets continuously recorded into a backup file which does not get deleted until the output is saved and double-checked. With a low-FPS timelapse like I often do there’s so little data to write even if it shoots for hours, maintaining 2 or 3 backup files simultaneously would not be an issue and could possibly save a whole lot of frustration. Being able to shoot a timelapse with fixed ISO/exposure is great and something you can’t do with iPhone’s built-in timelapse feature. White balance UI is not really clear when I use a white sheet—I hit the tiny AWB button and try to guess whether it worked or not as there seems little feedback.

I don’t have time for many positives but I will say the app adds many features that the native camera app doesn’t have. I also get stunning footage in 24fps LOG. What I Want (Using on iPhone 11 Pro): 60fps LOG as this is disabled Shutter speed lock when switching lenses Simultaneous shutter speed and exposure lock Exposure lock when switching lenses Easier way to switch between lenses Easier rack focus mechanism Zoom mode that auto switches lenses like the native app while recording Zoom mode that allows me to quickly switch to 2x lens while recording Frame drops in any frame rate to stop occurring Easier white balance adjustments with lock and number input ability ISO number input ability Tap to focus option Histogram overlay while recording I have shot commercial videos with this app now multiple times and some videos on the side for fun. It is a major step up from the native camera app but I do not feel confident using this in a working environment as I am adjusting settings more often than shooting, missing many important shots as most of my work involves live events. For now, I will have to switch back to using my DSLR. If the above list of features were implemented into the software my worries would be gone and I’d give this app a 5 star rating.

  • DoubleTake and filmicpro!!! Nov 30, 2020

    By topper de feys
First thing first both apps when they works are fantastic HOWEVER I cannot trust that what I tell either app to record in will be what waits for me in the camera roll. 1) DoubleTake: I set to 30 FPS record rear camera as A-cam/ front as B-cam hit the red button.... go back at the end of the day to find a 3 frames per second video waiting for me. YES A WHOLE 3 FRAMES PER SECOND OUT OF 30..... a whole 10% of what I asked for. Don’t trust it. 2) filmicpro: this app does the same thing only not quit as bad usually end up with 10 FPS. Like I said when they work they work awesomely and if you have the time to check your videos immediately after you end shooting each individual section of video to verify it worked go ahead. However I cannot afford such a luxury. I cannot trust this app to save a file that matches what I told it that I wanted. I have reached out to their support and I am waiting to hear back. I will update once I hear back from them.
