  • Slow and disappointing Aug 8, 2018

By Just trying to help people
So far, this app has been great, but there are a few things that make me rate less than a 5 or 4. I primarily use this app for baseball, as football season hasn't started. I just installed this app it to see if it was better that other baseball viewing apps I own. So far, the interface is great and well designed, but the app is SLOW! It takes a long time to start up, and it has a hard time with simple actions in general such as clicking on the details or score of a game. So far, I have had no problem with the live TV viewing aspect of it, but it should be noted that I haven't used it much as I am at home with my TV. The main thing that annoys me the most is that when I click on a player up at bat in the app, it brings me to a glitched version of the app’s website. You are unable to scroll, and have to use a drop down menu to continue on to the stats. Then when you finally get the stats, there is barely anything! In other apps, I can click on the player an instantly get an in-app page of TONS of stats, just like it should be! ESPN, fix this please!

Used to work fine. Now Google bills me but my subscription shows as expired. 2nd month in a row! Paying $5 a month for nothing!!!! Update: 1 of the app updates broke using Google's VPN. So now I either give up security or ESPN+. I would also add, 2 of us are streaming the same match with this app and there is a good 20 second difference in the streams. Same app, same match and same wifi. Both Android phones.

This is everything I want in my sports app. I honestly love it. There is one exception. I don’t know if it’s from app updates or what exactly, but the app continually turns on “Breaking News” alerts. I go to the app settings and turn them off, then sure enough a day or two later they’re turned back on. I take my alerts and notifications on my phone seriously and and very deliberate about what I’ll allow to grab my attention. I like getting updates on my teams, but I absolutely do not want breaking news from espn. Most of it is completely irrelevant to me. It’s causing me to consider turning off notifications from the app altogether and going elsewhere for the updates I want. Please, please stop turning on breaking news alerts!

Update: Yay!!! Y’all fixed it, Tysm Devs, if you’re going to change how the content is displayed you should put that in the update notes, not just say that you’ve added an In-App ppv feature & nothing else but bug squashing... I can’t find any of the Greatest (KO’s, Submissions, Rivalries, etc...) videos (if they’re even on there anymore) w/how y’all have changed the landscape, there is no longer a “See All” tappable button to the right of the group heading so you can browse content, you just have to scroll from the right & read each individual title that way until it eventually ends & it seams like they’re not even in there...& as for the group headings that can be scrolled all there is now is Upcoming, Related & On-Demand, but again, no tappable “See All” button to browse anything else that was just there a few weeks ago.?

  • Annoying ads, video at top Dec 2, 2017

    By DP
My primary usage of this app is for checking scores, getting a quick glance at schedules and stats, and occasional browsing of sports news articles. It is OK. The older version of this app was better. The “new” version has so many ads, including the annoying ones that magically encompass the entire screen when you’re about to tap on scores or an article and therefore force you to mistakenly link to some ad site, that it makes scrolling cumbersome. Also, who wants to see some random video at the top of the screen when logging in that has no context that you mistakenly tap because it is constantly at the top of the page (e.g., scores of the game the highlight is from, or a 30 second clip of an interview that has no additional context)? I don’t!!! It seems like the app intentionally leads you to mistakenly tap ad-related material.

Dissatisfied and disappointed. The app had been working fine up to a couple of days ago when all of a sudden I would only get a white screen whenever I started the app. No content at all was shown. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times with no results. Whenever I tried to configure my preferences I kept receiving a message "device lost connection" while connected to the internet through my wifi.

The streaming availability is fantastic. The amount of sports and games that this app has made available is just amazing. The streaming itself is okay. The quality of the games that are only streamed is very obviously and significantly worse than watching tv, which can be annoying. The camera work is far worse, the announcers are worse, there are fewer and worse graphics. The biggest problem with the app itself is the functionality and ease of use. It’s god awful. If you aren’t looking for the exact sport ESPN is trying to shove down your throat at that particular moment, it can take forever to find it. I’ve had the app for about a year and a half and I still have no idea how to find scores I’m looking for. If I just want to see scores and I’m not looking for NBA, NFL, or MLB scores, i have to constantly search through multiple menus and links to finally find what I’m looking for. And the whole time I see the same streams and leagues that ESPN just assumes I want to see. There is no customization and no recognization by the developers that people may want to see scores from leagues that aren’t the top leagues. And for what it’s worth, I do look up scores from the top 4 US sports daily, as well as many top soccer leagues and tennis tournaments. However, because this app is so difficult to use, I always use Yahoo, the MLB app, or flash score to find those scores instead of this one.

You better fix this app now or we are going to have problems. I paid for the service so I could watch MMA/UFC content and this app is failing 90% of the time. The 10% of the time that the streaming actually works it's all choppy, buffering constantly, and even playing audio without the video. I'm not playing here. I don't appreciate or take kindly to my money being essentially stolen in this manner. I'm going to watch illegal streams until you fix this BS app.

  • Poor App, difficult to connect/watch Jan 4, 2020

    By Shahryar1983
I honestly have difficulty deciding which is worse, the ESPN app or the website, as far as being able to view live games. Typically, I have to log in and out 5-10 times and independently log in to my cable provider 5-10 times each time I want to stream live games or replays. It’s quite amazing how many times you can be told that your cable subscription does not cover the live stream only to find out, on the 10th attempt, that it does. Considering it’s listed as one of the supported cable subscriptions, I’m guessing the 10th time is accurate. I have considered the possibility that it’s related to my cable provider, but since I experience the same issues with my ESPN+ subscription without going through my cable provider, I’m guessing it’s not. Of note, ESPN+ won’t be renewed. I remember watching ESPN when I was young and have continued to do so as I approach middle age, but the difficulty in accessing programming with more modern technology is quite frustrating and makes me want to find another avenue to watch my football, baseball, etc. Disney, if you’re reading this, you could really help improve the quality by fixing some of these issues before a mass exodus of subscribers who watch on mobile devices or their computers.

My previous review mentioned that Chromecast support seemed broken, and I tried just about everything I could to troubleshoot the issue (lots of "Not Authorized" errors, despite everything working fine on-device). Since then, I hadn't tried it again, but it appears to be working fine now. That being said, ESPN didn't need to redesign their app, but they did and it's always an attempt to make finding content more user-friendly. I like the changes, and while I may not have ESPN+ all the time, it's nice to see what I could be getting (certain times of year it will come in handy). I've tried other sports apps, and outside of MLB At Bat, ESPN's alerts give the most information.

  • Truly the best sports app Dec 16, 2019

    By Review guy 467
News is great. Being able to fellow all my favorite teams in one app is the greatest. Game cast tracks the game well on time. It may take 48 hours to watch the last game my team may have played but that’s fine either way. On the Apple Watch I’ll say it’s great to have just my teams and GameTime & even there next game. Not having to scroll through other teams is a time saver. I do wish team standings was on there that’s what I like about the mlb app. So if you want a all in one sports app definitely this is your your only choice. Those with buffering problems all I do is make sure my WiFi is good. Since I do no problems. Also I wish it would give game details in the watch like how the mlb & nhl apps do.

Tuned in last night for all the early prelims and all main card fights on the UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs Dillashaw, experienced absolutely no issues with the streaming. I had watched early prelims on both my phone and laptop, and switched to my television using chrome cast, so in my experience the streams were handled well on multiple platforms. This adds up to 4.5 hours of stream time which means it was able to run for a good amount of time as well. The membership is affordable as well at only $5/month. I have heard from other people they had issues with their streams so your experience may vary, but since I had experienced no problems I give the app and the membership 5 stars

I think most of the complaints about this app are funny. I haven’t had a single problem with the ESPN App. My favorite teams and leagues are all in this app just like with Fox. They give you alerts based on what you want to see and it’s customizable and I muted news alerts to some leagues I pay less attention to and kept it on with the ones I do follow. I have to say ESPN+ is so worth it. I bought the subscription for more NHL, MLS and college hockey. I get that they have a lot of soccer/football (soccer is real football for the record) but it’s the world's most popular sport weather football and baseball fans like it or not. I’m happy with ESPN+ and glad I have it. Thanks ESPN

This is one of my most used apps. I wish that when I get a notification and click on it to open that notification that it will actually play that particular thread smoother. Other than that I love it. Update: the app has gotten slow...really slow. And glitchy. It takes almost a minute sometimes longer for it to open from a notification. Watching a game is null and void now unless I want to watch it in Spanish lol 🤦🏾‍♂️. Every time it says that I can’t watch it and to call my service provider. I call AT&T and they said that everything checks out on their end. Please fix this?? Baseball season is already here and football season will be coming next and I’d like to be able to watch the games like I used to be able to.

ESPN the network and the app are great. The app is everything I could ever ask for. The only problem I have is how Steven A Smith has a job there. First because of his remarks against women and then his flip flopping of opinions. He legitimately has no idea what’s going on but runs his mouth then apologizes later that he got it wrong. If this is all it takes to be a ESPN analyst and make 10 million a year then sign me up. I can say .ex:“ the Celtics are out of this series( cause Gianiss had a good game and tied the series.) and there is no coming back. If that’s all it takes is to pick a side then another and offer no insight then really my 6 yo could put Steven A out of s job. Congratulations ESPN on throwing money at a horrible analyst and sexist.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 sarcastic stars

  • Decent app, crashing issues Oct 7, 2018

At the time of this review, the app is having major crashing problems. It won’t stay open for more than a few seconds. I didn’t update it, and I’m on the same WiFi I always am, so no idea what’s going on. I’d submit feedback about it, but- you can probably figure out why I’m here instead. When it’s working, the only complaint I have is that you can’t add/remove sports or leagues from the main feed. I literally could not care any less about baseball, but during the playoffs that takes up a lot of the feed. Otherwise it’s solid. Probably the best thing about the app is the 3 minute SVP app segment they upload every morning. Blurbs about the biggest highlights in a more casual format. Great addition.

  • Apps needs to be cleaner Apr 29, 2018

    By anathalab
Two things. I like the app. It gives me updates I need with news and with games. However I wish ESPN+ was its own app (I purchased the subscription because of MLS, EFL) and having ESPN plus as its own (similarly to NBC Sports Gold helps eliminate non subscription content. This leads me into my thing; this is app is very messy to use. There’s no way to filter the content you want so you’re not seeing content you don’t want (I am only interested in soccer and don’t want to switch the UK version in the app because you can’t watch the games). In addition to a messy home screen, attempting to find the sports you’re interested in and their game is difficult and when you do find it those games aren’t listed (even thought that’s what ESPN+ advertise). I like the app, I truly do but I wish it was much cleaner than it is. Hopefully changes come soon.

Great place to get scores and info no doubt. It’s just truly ridiculous that you have to watch ads for every single video on ESPN. The worst part is having auto play on videos. You watch an ad watch a video, no problem, watch the same ad immediately and then the actual video buffers. Keep in my mind the ad is longer than the video you are trying to watch. Boom the same ad, another video buffers and the cycle continues. What’s the point of even clicking videos if you’re going to have to watch the same ad essentially on repeat as the actual video buffers, and plays in terrible quality like give me a break. I can deal with one ad, I can deal with poor quality of video. I can’t deal with the same ad before every video while the video buffers then plays in terrible quality, while the ad is basically 4K.

I honestly have no idea how a company with as much money as this has such an awful app. It’s slow, bordering on unresponsive sometimes. My phone is flaming hot after a few minutes of use on the app, although that could just be my phone and not the app. I get a lot of alerts on from ESPN, but when I click on them, it’s about a 50/50 shot of whether or not I get to see what I clicked. Ads freeze all the time, keeping me from getting to a video I click on. Videos also typically start at about 4 pixels on the screen and get marginally better as the video goes on, no matter if I’m connected to my very good WiFi or my cellular data. The amount of content is also a little subpar. When you look at an app like Bleacher Report that produces an insane amount of well-done and free content on an app that actually works, the paywall of ESPN+ is just silly. Streaming from the app is also nearly impossible for me. But the website is just as bad. The content that I actually get to see is usually pretty good stuff, making it a two star rating instead of a one star. Considering the money ESPN and Disney have, they should be embarrassed about the quality of their app and their website.

  • Could be great, but won’t save your place!! Dec 12, 2019

    By krokkta
I recently subscribed because of the Disney bundle and there are a lot of things I really am liking about ESPN +. I love all the old programming like all the archived Indy 500 races and Mohamed Ali fights. I also really like all the ESPN original programming like Payton’s places and being able to access all of the 30 for 30 episodes. That for me is probably one of the best things about the subscription. My frustration comes because a lot of those shows are long and I don’t watch them in one sitting You would think that there would be a ‘continue watching’ feature like every other paid, streaming subscription but there isn’t. I contacted ESPN and was told to just “remember where you were.” That seems so silly and unnecessary. Please ESPN, add a ‘continue watching’ feature and I will be a 5 star happy customer. As it is right now I have to scroll back through programming, find the show I was watching, click on it, and try to remember where I was and start fast forwarding which is a huge pain if your like me and watch different shows depending on the mood you are in.

ESPN, I have been all ESPN ever since I was old enough to care about sports. The writing and reporting is phenomenal, and I love to be the one in my family to break the biggest sports news. The app is great with notifications on your favorite teams and leagues as well as breaking sports news. The radio streaming and podcasts are great especially my favorites (Lebatard Show, Golic and Wingo, and 30 for 30). I will continue to use this app for all of those reasons. I do however wish you guys had full game highlights online, but I digress. The only bad thing I have to say is how god awful the streaming is. Tried to watch the ECF between cavs and Celtics and it lagged throughout the entire game when casting it to my chrome cast. It did the same just trying to watch on my phone and I have gigabit internet. I don’t know why that has always been an issue for ESPN. It has sucked since the first release of WatchESPN. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!! I’m begging you because the wife kicks me out of our tv room when I’m trying to watch the games! Thank you ESPN, and keep up the good work!

  • Suggestions and complaints Nov 1, 2018

This is a great app. I am, however, disappointed in a few key things. 1. I had my favorite teams selected in “favorites,” and one day I opened the app only to find that there was no “favorites” setting visible, and that my favorite teams scores notifications were turned off even though I never turned them off. 2. I’ve said this in previous reviews, and I’ll say it again; I really really wish you’d put AHL hockey in here. The AHL is a minor league, but it’s got a strong enough following, and I absolutely love it, and I’d love to be able to more easily access the scores/news/stats for it here as opposed to having to go to the AHL website every time. 3. NCAA hockey, both men’s and women’s, are listed as sports on here, but whenever I check I never see them updated or covered as much as the games are happening. For example, I’m a Penn State fan, and I never see the scores for my school. Hockey is big, as is college hockey, so this is disappointing and surprising to me. Thank you for your time, and I sincerely hope that my suggestions will be taken into consideration.

This app has great content, but unfortunately you're lucky if you can actually VIEW any of that content. I can't recall a single time that I've tried to watch something on this app and didn't experience multiple glitches. "Reached maximum amount of concurrent streams" when I can't even get one stream going is the most frequent error message. I downloaded this app on my Chromebook and I couldn't even log in. Overall its incredibly frustrating for something that isn't free.
