Great after streaming from 3 separate phones. The first two phones had amazing experiences, especially compared to competitors. The updates, with the espn sportcenter ringtone, unmatched and very personal. The live streaming was an extremely satisfying experience. It felt as though the games were being playing right in my living space. Very personal level, and clear. There were some buffering, but gets better w time. 5 stars!!!!

  • Slow and disappointing Aug 8, 2018

So far, this app has been great, but there are a few things that make me rate less than a 5 or 4. I primarily use this app for baseball, as football season hasn't started. I just installed this app it to see if it was better that other baseball viewing apps I own. So far, the interface is great and well designed, but the app is SLOW! It takes a long time to start up, and it has a hard time with simple actions in general such as clicking on the details or score of a game. So far, I have had no problem with the live TV viewing aspect of it, but it should be noted that I haven't used it much as I am at home with my TV. The main thing that annoys me the most is that when I click on a player up at bat in the app, it brings me to a glitched version of the app’s website. You are unable to scroll, and have to use a drop down menu to continue on to the stats. Then when you finally get the stats, there is barely anything! In other apps, I can click on the player an instantly get an in-app page of TONS of stats, just like it should be! ESPN, fix this please!

This is everything I want in my sports app. I honestly love it. There is one exception. I don’t know if it’s from app updates or what exactly, but the app continually turns on “Breaking News” alerts. I go to the app settings and turn them off, then sure enough a day or two later they’re turned back on. I take my alerts and notifications on my phone seriously and and very deliberate about what I’ll allow to grab my attention. I like getting updates on my teams, but I absolutely do not want breaking news from espn. Most of it is completely irrelevant to me. It’s causing me to consider turning off notifications from the app altogether and going elsewhere for the updates I want. Please, please stop turning on breaking news alerts!

Might give it a better score if you could block some sports news and articles. Takes your preferences into account but also pushes sports I have zero interest in. Basketball for example, or college american football, I'm sure they have loads of fans in the US but I am on this side of the pond, and not one of them, so would prefer not seeing news about players and teams I dont know and couldnt care less about.

All in all, it's a decent service for the price. I have one complaint: I cannot remove a team once I've made them a favorite. This is a small issue, but frankly it's rather annoying. I looked up troubleshooting on Google and found that this has been an issue since at least 2018.

Update: October 9. Still buffering for pretty much everything. I just download stuff over night and watch offline. Recently, sound is not synchronized with video. Really hard to believe how bad this app is. Original post: Even with measured 200-300mb download speed, the app buffers repeatedly. I don't know if it is a server side issue or the app itself. However, I can only rate my app experience as average, at best. And, compared to services like Netflix, it is far below average.

The streaming availability is fantastic. The amount of sports and games that this app has made available is just amazing. The streaming itself is okay. The quality of the games that are only streamed is very obviously and significantly worse than watching tv, which can be annoying. The camera work is far worse, the announcers are worse, there are fewer and worse graphics. The biggest problem with the app itself is the functionality and ease of use. It’s god awful. If you aren’t looking for the exact sport ESPN is trying to shove down your throat at that particular moment, it can take forever to find it. I’ve had the app for about a year and a half and I still have no idea how to find scores I’m looking for. If I just want to see scores and I’m not looking for NBA, NFL, or MLB scores, i have to constantly search through multiple menus and links to finally find what I’m looking for. And the whole time I see the same streams and leagues that ESPN just assumes I want to see. There is no customization and no recognization by the developers that people may want to see scores from leagues that aren’t the top leagues. And for what it’s worth, I do look up scores from the top 4 US sports daily, as well as many top soccer leagues and tennis tournaments. However, because this app is so difficult to use, I always use Yahoo, the MLB app, or flash score to find those scores instead of this one.

I have a paid subscription for the Disney plus package which includes Hulu and ESPN plus. Every time I try to watch live TV, it asks for a service provider which I do not have. If I use the app on my phone, computer or Roku on my tv its always the same. Its better to just pay for a service provider instead of dealing with this. Save your money and time. One star is too many when you have spent money and can't get what you paid for.

  • Poor App, difficult to connect/watch Jan 4, 2020

    By Shahryar1983
I honestly have difficulty deciding which is worse, the ESPN app or the website, as far as being able to view live games. Typically, I have to log in and out 5-10 times and independently log in to my cable provider 5-10 times each time I want to stream live games or replays. It’s quite amazing how many times you can be told that your cable subscription does not cover the live stream only to find out, on the 10th attempt, that it does. Considering it’s listed as one of the supported cable subscriptions, I’m guessing the 10th time is accurate. I have considered the possibility that it’s related to my cable provider, but since I experience the same issues with my ESPN+ subscription without going through my cable provider, I’m guessing it’s not. Of note, ESPN+ won’t be renewed. I remember watching ESPN when I was young and have continued to do so as I approach middle age, but the difficulty in accessing programming with more modern technology is quite frustrating and makes me want to find another avenue to watch my football, baseball, etc. Disney, if you’re reading this, you could really help improve the quality by fixing some of these issues before a mass exodus of subscribers who watch on mobile devices or their computers.

Espn radio is the best place to go to listen to commercials. Don't worry they know they are espn and you will listen to them no matter what so they won't bog you down with all that annoying sports talk. On the app you only have to watch a 22 second highlight to 30 seconds or more of an ad. Amazing marketing. I just can't say enough about how much value they put into their sponsors. Thank you ESPN for being the best shopping experience out there!!!

Update: Yay!!! Y’all fixed it, Tysm Devs, if you’re going to change how the content is displayed you should put that in the update notes, not just say that you’ve added an In-App ppv feature & nothing else but bug squashing... I can’t find any of the Greatest (KO’s, Submissions, Rivalries, etc...) videos (if they’re even on there anymore) w/how y’all have changed the landscape, there is no longer a “See All” tappable button to the right of the group heading so you can browse content, you just have to scroll from the right & read each individual title that way until it eventually ends & it seams like they’re not even in there...& as for the group headings that can be scrolled all there is now is Upcoming, Related & On-Demand, but again, no tappable “See All” button to browse anything else that was just there a few weeks ago.?

My previous review mentioned that Chromecast support seemed broken, and I tried just about everything I could to troubleshoot the issue (lots of "Not Authorized" errors, despite everything working fine on-device). Since then, I hadn't tried it again, but it appears to be working fine now. That being said, ESPN didn't need to redesign their app, but they did and it's always an attempt to make finding content more user-friendly. I like the changes, and while I may not have ESPN+ all the time, it's nice to see what I could be getting (certain times of year it will come in handy). I've tried other sports apps, and outside of MLB At Bat, ESPN's alerts give the most information.

  • Truly the best sports app Dec 16, 2019

    By Review guy 467
News is great. Being able to fellow all my favorite teams in one app is the greatest. Game cast tracks the game well on time. It may take 48 hours to watch the last game my team may have played but that’s fine either way. On the Apple Watch I’ll say it’s great to have just my teams and GameTime & even there next game. Not having to scroll through other teams is a time saver. I do wish team standings was on there that’s what I like about the mlb app. So if you want a all in one sports app definitely this is your your only choice. Those with buffering problems all I do is make sure my WiFi is good. Since I do no problems. Also I wish it would give game details in the watch like how the mlb & nhl apps do.

Tuned in last night for all the early prelims and all main card fights on the UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs Dillashaw, experienced absolutely no issues with the streaming. I had watched early prelims on both my phone and laptop, and switched to my television using chrome cast, so in my experience the streams were handled well on multiple platforms. This adds up to 4.5 hours of stream time which means it was able to run for a good amount of time as well. The membership is affordable as well at only $5/month. I have heard from other people they had issues with their streams so your experience may vary, but since I had experienced no problems I give the app and the membership 5 stars

This is one of my most used apps. I wish that when I get a notification and click on it to open that notification that it will actually play that particular thread smoother. Other than that I love it. Update: the app has gotten slow...really slow. And glitchy. It takes almost a minute sometimes longer for it to open from a notification. Watching a game is null and void now unless I want to watch it in Spanish lol 🤦🏾‍♂️. Every time it says that I can’t watch it and to call my service provider. I call AT&T and they said that everything checks out on their end. Please fix this?? Baseball season is already here and football season will be coming next and I’d like to be able to watch the games like I used to be able to.

ESPN the network and the app are great. The app is everything I could ever ask for. The only problem I have is how Steven A Smith has a job there. First because of his remarks against women and then his flip flopping of opinions. He legitimately has no idea what’s going on but runs his mouth then apologizes later that he got it wrong. If this is all it takes to be a ESPN analyst and make 10 million a year then sign me up. I can say .ex:“ the Celtics are out of this series( cause Gianiss had a good game and tied the series.) and there is no coming back. If that’s all it takes is to pick a side then another and offer no insight then really my 6 yo could put Steven A out of s job. Congratulations ESPN on throwing money at a horrible analyst and sexist.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 sarcastic stars

  • Decent app, crashing issues Oct 7, 2018

    By DanielManning
At the time of this review, the app is having major crashing problems. It won’t stay open for more than a few seconds. I didn’t update it, and I’m on the same WiFi I always am, so no idea what’s going on. I’d submit feedback about it, but- you can probably figure out why I’m here instead. When it’s working, the only complaint I have is that you can’t add/remove sports or leagues from the main feed. I literally could not care any less about baseball, but during the playoffs that takes up a lot of the feed. Otherwise it’s solid. Probably the best thing about the app is the 3 minute SVP app segment they upload every morning. Blurbs about the biggest highlights in a more casual format. Great addition.

  • Doesn’t really support personalization Aug 9, 2020

    By madmick2002
I’ve been using it for many years but it refuses to care about my interests, which through my interactions should be very obvious. They always push their own preferred content to the top. For example, I understand there is a PGA championship going on but I NEVER, ever once clicked on a golf story, but that’s what they’re pushing to the top these days. I’m the kind of fan that follow teams, not individual players, but this app is constantly showing a section to recommend I follow individuals, and the “Recommended for You” choices are a million miles away from anything I show interest in - nobody from the teams or sports I follow, rather just the players in pop culture or who have big contracts. Well, what about the teams I do follow, can I just get a quick glance at what they’re doing? Not really, I have to navigate around and scroll until I can finally find the content I really care about. There’s no attempt to really learn my preferences and show what I want. There isn’t even an option to pay for personalized content or to remove ads. This ESPN app really appears to be about promoting content, advertisements and agendas and we sports fans just have to deal with it. Having said this, once you get to the content you want, there really isn’t a better sports app out there - again that’s why I deal with all the other baggage that comes with it. Oh, and it can be pretty laggy with scores and updates.

  • Content is great...if you can see it Aug 19, 2020

    By Hentv
The amount of choice you have in regards to content makes it a great app. However, I find the video player to be less than desirable...making this an average ho-hum sports app. I try to use the app while I’m at the gym-particularly when doing cardio. I log on to the live version of “PTI” and 30-40% of the time I get error messages. Last night was a “re-authentication error”. So I went to settings and signed out of my cable provider and signed back in. Then I received another type of error...so I rebooted my iPhone X to see if that fixed the problem. It didn’t. So I quit the app and listened to music instead. This happens more than it should from a company owned by Disney. These guys know their tech...but can’t seem to get their player right. So, would I recommend this app? Yes, with the understanding and appreciation that you might not be able to see the content you want.

  • How? Apr 28, 2020

I honestly have no idea how a company with as much money as this has such an awful app. It’s slow, bordering on unresponsive sometimes. My phone is flaming hot after a few minutes of use on the app, although that could just be my phone and not the app. I get a lot of alerts on from ESPN, but when I click on them, it’s about a 50/50 shot of whether or not I get to see what I clicked. Ads freeze all the time, keeping me from getting to a video I click on. Videos also typically start at about 4 pixels on the screen and get marginally better as the video goes on, no matter if I’m connected to my very good WiFi or my cellular data. The amount of content is also a little subpar. When you look at an app like Bleacher Report that produces an insane amount of well-done and free content on an app that actually works, the paywall of ESPN+ is just silly. Streaming from the app is also nearly impossible for me. But the website is just as bad. The content that I actually get to see is usually pretty good stuff, making it a two star rating instead of a one star. Considering the money ESPN and Disney have, they should be embarrassed about the quality of their app and their website.

The app needs some work especially when casting . It cuts off randomly whenever it decides and you have to recast after closing the app. Not sure why it has this problem but I do not have a problem when using hulu (live events and tv shows), disney +, or youtube. Even at times when I'm just watching it on my phone (tried iphone and pixel) it will randomly just not show whatever I am trying to watch. I either have to close the app or restart phone.

  • Could be great, but won’t save your place!! Dec 12, 2019

I recently subscribed because of the Disney bundle and there are a lot of things I really am liking about ESPN +. I love all the old programming like all the archived Indy 500 races and Mohamed Ali fights. I also really like all the ESPN original programming like Payton’s places and being able to access all of the 30 for 30 episodes. That for me is probably one of the best things about the subscription. My frustration comes because a lot of those shows are long and I don’t watch them in one sitting You would think that there would be a ‘continue watching’ feature like every other paid, streaming subscription but there isn’t. I contacted ESPN and was told to just “remember where you were.” That seems so silly and unnecessary. Please ESPN, add a ‘continue watching’ feature and I will be a 5 star happy customer. As it is right now I have to scroll back through programming, find the show I was watching, click on it, and try to remember where I was and start fast forwarding which is a huge pain if your like me and watch different shows depending on the mood you are in.

[EDIT] Still absolutely horrible. It will almost never play any live broadcast. I tried to contact ESPN but have heard nothing from them. Absolutely HORRIBLE. I installed the app on an Android TV. I registered the app using my DirecTV credentials. The app shows me a long horizontal list of LIVE programming. None of them works. I have not subscribed to ESPN+, but this is not the issue. NO PROGRAM will play. Sometimes, a context menu appears through which I can select a broadcast. But NONE of them play the broadcast. One out of 10 times the Live program will play. But 9 out of 10 times it won't. Even re-installing does not fix it. Simply horrible. UPDATE: It is STILL a horrible app. I was watching a game and all of a sudden it stopped and sent me back to the main menu. In order to get back to the game I had to log out, log in, and reboot my television. It's a horrible experience and I see no way tp contact ESPN support.
