Easy to Use Entry-Level Overview
Aug 30, 2013 This app introduces a new photographer to the basic tools and ideas involved in shooting with a DSLR camera through photos, short paragraphs, charts and so on; it does not use videos. The different factors seem fairly comprehensive: a person new to photography could use only this app and come away with a pretty strong sense of what they are doing. Quizzes allow the user to test their understanding, and tools allow the user to use the app in the field after they have learned and begun shooting. Very rarely I wished for slightly more in depth explanations of the subjects but for the most part a good level of detail was included to educate me without confusing or boring me. I especially liked seeing the same compositions photographed with varying settings so I could see exactly the different effects of changing one's camera's settings. Initially I was a bit skeptical of the quality because I spotted spelling errors but I guess the authors figure that, as a picture is worth a thousand words, they needn't worry too much about the actual written words they chose. I would recommend this app to the new DSLR owner or even someone in the market for such because the app spends some time discussing the pros and cons of different kinds of digital cameras available today. Worth three bucks
Aug 22, 2015 A pocket full of information as a quick reference is always a good thing. If you need to learn the most basic stuff the free version is all you'll need, but paying for the full unlock is really worth the quiz refreshers and the DoF/EV guides. Four stars, this app is incredibly smart and shiny until you pay for the unlock, then what you will get feels unrefined and incomplete. There are whole slides that are blank, and poor English that needs editing. As for the content, the most confusing parts of photography are explained and your understanding of them is tested with a simple "you got is right, or not" check system, and a help button to point you to the correct part of the guide. This makes it easy to see where your weaknesses are and what you'll need to go over before that next shoot. I'd hope for updates that fix the small issues and add more content like the use of polarizing filters, intentional lens flares or when to use a hood, ND for waterfall shots, etc. for more of the creative processes that people might expect in a hide like this. Overall this is a good addition to your arsenal, and I'd recommend this app to everyone, beginner to professional.more -
Easy to use beginner photography
Mar 2, 2018 This is a fantastic program for beginner photographers easy learning with visual aspects as well as easy to follow prompts I love this and have learned more in basic 1 thank hours and hours of watching videos definitely recommend. I was also having difficulty trying to get the in app purchase to go thru I finally wound up just rebooting my phone as it kept saying my purchase was cancelled and was able to get the purchase complete this was a problem apparently on my end so FYI your getting a message error saying purchase cancelled just reboot and try again.more -
Amazing...and not just for beginners
Mar 16, 2015 I've been using my DSLR for almost 7 years, and this app taught me more in 3 minutes than all of the articles and attempted lessons from photographer friends I've tried to absorb . though I had a solid understanding of the principles of photography, translating it to the digital camera has been frustrating at times. This app gives a clear, logical explanation of concepts and settings without drowning you in unnecessary information. It's an incredible tool and the price is far less than it's worth. Lots of "ah HA!" Moments. My only regret us that I didn't have this years ago.more -
EXACTLY what I need!!!
Aug 28, 2016 I've wanted to get into photography but the technical aspect has always intimidated me. Now that I just bought my first dslr, I have no choice but to learn. This app gives straight forward concise definitions of each concept and then provides really good examples. Many of the examples even include sub-examples. E.g.: when showing you the effect of changes to ISO it provides the same image taken with four diff ISOs, allowing you to actually *see* what ISO means in practice. I'm only through a couple of the units but I've learned so much already. If you're new to photography, this app is a must have.more

Not great.
Jul 28, 2020 It alright, until you open the exposure chart and there’s no back button, so you are stuck, and have to trash the app and then reload it to get back home. Makes me want my money back! -
App 2 times charged

Aug 12, 2013 Downloaded, couldn't open any links, apparently without upgrading, but no info on cost. Tried the "about" link thinking it might tell me about the cost to upgrade, but no such luck. "open" option goes nowhere. Can only submit a review, so I'm trying that. Otherwise I'm stuck on the "about" page with no way to go elsewhere in the app.more

Great App! A must have app for beginner photographers
Jan 2, 2021 I love this app! It explains the basics of photography in an easy to understand format and includes interactive graphics that enhance learning. It goes beyond my expectations. As a beginning photographer, I'm glad I can take this app with me on my phone for reference when needed. Above all, I believe when I complete all the lessons, I will not only be more knowledgeable about photography but I will be equipped to use that knowledge in real life photography situations.more -
Best kickstarter app for beginners
Sep 8, 2017 I appreciate this app. The material challenged me but was presented well for learning. The quizzes and charts and tables and exercise tool are brilliant. It's a great app to come back to for refreshers and when you've forgotten something. Out of the dozens of apps I've looked at and of all the apps I've ever bought this one is one of the tops for delivering value. PS years later, I'm still enjoying it. Thank you.more

Very helpful
Jan 3, 2015 This app is very helpful for beginners like myself. I believe the content is explained well and it gives good examples of the concepts. It is definitely worth the 2.99 in my opinion. I didn't give it 5 starts because I noticed while gong through the lessons a couple of the pages were blank where text should've been. Other than that, it's great!more -
Awesome teacher
May 18, 2016 I got my camera about a week ago and haven't taken any classes prior and I feel like I have a pretty decent understanding of photography from this app alone. Only gave it a 4 star because it has some empty slides every once in awhilemore -
Excellent!
Dec 13, 2013 Excellent explanation of the basics of photography. This app makes everything easy to understand. Sometimes freezes though and I have to shut down phone or re-download app.

Good but froze me
Oct 26, 2019 I liked the app but when I finally purchased it I used some of the features. But I opened the Ev table chart and it froze. I could not get back to the home page. So my only recourse was to delete the app. Then I went out and downloaded it again but it was locked and wanted me to pay again. I am not going to pay twice but I really liked it.more -

What’s Groovy
This goes beyond the typical beginner lessons elsewhere. Instead of the same old "don't shoot in auto" this interactive app teaches the fundamentals of exposure, light, lenses, when to do this or that, how to understand histograms, bracketing, and depth of field in one of the easiest explanations I've seen yet. It even has an introduction to flash photography and how it works.
Couple charts for EV table, DOF calculator, and quizzes on the information learned.
Well worth buying if you're serious and tired of hunting across the web just to find articles that teach in a million different ways what a million different people think is the correct way.

What’s Subpar
I really liked the basics 1 tutorial. I can see that the rest of the i formation available would be very useful. However, in-app purchases will not work. It keeps telling me they are not available. What good does that do? Looks like I’ll have to look elsewhere. Bummer!
