I've been a user for 5 years, and although I have been a huge advocate of this app, I'm so disappointed they have moved to a paid subscription model. Not to mention, all the updates have been glitchy - such as creating two separate categories for "expense" and "income". It was far simpler previously of toggling the "+" or "-" to indicate the difference. Also, their help center link doesn't work on their website and I can't locate any press release info explaining the shift to subscription.
  • Seriously Best Financial App Ever!!! Feb 20, 2021

I discovered Dollarbird about three or four years ago. I echo another user’s comments I can’t understand why mor people don’t use this app. I have uses them all. Most track budgets - as this app does as well - but the calendar cash flow view is simply the most powerful budgeting tool I’ve ever used! Not only can I track my budget against my spending categories but I can control and predict and run budget scenarios quickly. I have never felt more completely in control of my finances. Also the fact that this app does not link to a bank connects you to your financial life and keeps you constantly aware of where you stand. I thought it would be hard or I might forget but that never happens. Also there are reminders to add transactions and the ability to program any type of transactions. Also the new ability to make a duplicate calendar to run budget scenarios: new monthly expenses, buy a new car, change in mortgage/rent, save for a trip, change in salary you name it. The ability to literally see your daily cash flow for months into to future has proven to be a game changer. The new look is the perfect refresh. It keeps all the functionality of the app but updates the visuals in a way the makes the app even more useful and useable. Great work all associated with this app!!

This is exactly what I needed. My pay fluctuates and I like to see what I will have inbetween paychecks. I didn't need anything that shows what I am spending my money on. I used Spendee for about a year before they upgraded and I liked their app. However, it is very buggy and doesn't update my balances so I changed. The balance update feature is great too! I have no desire to put every receipt or transaction so it's nice to just update my balance every few days and see where I'm at.
  • Well worth it to pay for the subscription changes!!! Feb 27, 2021

I have been using this app for awhile now when it was free. They recently changed from a completely free app to a monthly or yearly subscription price. Let me tell you that it is worth it if you are serious about tracking your finances. Excellent tool to help become debt free. I have no choice but to go ahead and pay the price to continue using it’s features. You can input your income and budgeted bill amounts to the corresponding date and see a forecast of your cashflow months out. Bills can be set up to be recurring or custom made fit to your payment schedule. No this app does not pay your bills for you, neither connects to your bank account. You have to manually reconcile when a payment clears. Not fully automatic, but still i love how this works. I am more disciplined to be more involved with how i relate and spend money.

Why aren’t more people using this method?!!? This is the best way that I know of to project expenses. We don’t get consistent bill amounts in a consistent manner. So without having that information, how can you anticipate if you have enough money for the next month? Just because there seems to be enough in your account doesn’t mean that there is. Especially when you factor in that there are five week months. On some of those, you get paid three times per month (factoring in bi-weekly paychecks). But what about the other 5 week months, when you only get paid twice? You still have two factor in an additional weeks expenses, such as gas and groceries. By being able to project out, I can make sure that I have enough in my account. I can’t say enough good things about this method!

I love this app and was willing to pay for premium access to keep it. However, the newest update has QOL downgrades. I have a lot of categories and the bottom row is cut off in the select categories menu, so I can't see the names of those categories. It's inconvenient that you have to click into the expenses box before entering an expense (before you could just start entering the number). When I confirm a predicted expense it makes a DUPLICATE so I have the erase the predicted one. Unfortunate.

Love the app. It's so helpful to be able to plan out my finances far in advance. The new update does have some glitches. Most annoyingly, I happily paid for a pro account but my husband is not able to get access on his phone. I do have faith that future updates will fix any issues, so overall it's money well spent regardless.

I've been using the free version of this app for a couple of years now with no problems. Now there's an update that limits my daily transactions without premium. I can't figure out what the limit is, but it seems to be very low. Very disappointing. The app is not worth the monthly they're asking for. I'm tracking every dollar for a reason, I'm not going to pay more than a one time fee of 4.99 max for this app.

Dollarbird is my favorite app for budgeting forecasts and keeping track of my balances and expenses. It’s so easy to set up re-occurring payments and income, while also being easy to change. However, whenever you make one of these changes, you have to re-confirm every entry in a series, one at a time. This can be quite tedious if you’re playing around with values, making category adjustments, or altering a schedule of payments/income. Whenever you make a change to a series item, Dollarbird asks if you want to make the change to just that instance or the entire series. The one thing that it won’t let you do is confirm all entries. A great example of this is they just added some category symbols and diving into my categories made me realize that I need to breakout and combine certain categories for better representation of my spending. Well, for many of those items that I know will always happen, I now have to go through and confirm all future instances of them. I know this lack of feature is because “what if something changes,” but I’d rather have to make a one time change at a singular, random point in the future than have to confirm my transactions every single month or whenever I make a minute change. Being able to “confirm all” is the only feature I could possibly ask for from this app.

Love the app, but nothing is more frustrating than opening an app and finding that features that used to be available are behind a pay wall. Before, you could enter unlimited transactions; the app was really great for keeping track of what you may have spent while running errands or paying monthly bills. Now it's a giant pain to have to remember to open the app the next day and finishing entering everything.
  • Freezes and crashes constantly Nov 13, 2017

    By moopoints
I am pretty disappointed by the update to Dollarbird 2, mostly for two reasons: 1) the new interface feels like it had the purpose to look good with no real purpose. Charges are harder to find and the monthly overview looks jammed. 2) A bigger letdown however is how data is handled on Dollarbird 2. Now it takes a long time after launching the app until all data has been loaded (it appears the app tries to load the most recent state from the server every time you open the app). This makes the simple process to open Dollardbird and adding charge very slow and cumbersome. Additionally the app freezes (probably also due to server communication issues) constantly. All in all the previous Dollarbird was much simpler and faster to use and this version feels heavy and slow. I am close to giving up on Dollarbird. Update after developer’s response: The app works worse than initially reported by me. It consistently freezes (approx. 9 out of the 10 times I open the app and try to add a charge it freezes). It crashes often as well. And approx once a day it logs you out so you will have to log in again. The app needs serious fixing.

EXTREMELY disappointed in their new limits! I've been using DB for YEARS to keep my budget in check and recommend it to everyone. Suddenly, and without warning, they've changed their free model so that users are limited to an unreasonable 3 transactions a day unless you want to pay $10/mo. They don't even offer a lifetime option. How is an app that's supposed to help me control my spending going to start asking me for money? Very, very disappointed in y'all, Dollarbird. I'll be switching apps!
  • Used to love this until last update. Jan 4, 2019

So they fixed the app hiding old transactions, great! However, now the app runs so slowly I cannot stand it. It also duplicates transactions, or doesn’t add them at all. Seriously, whatever update you did a month ago, please take it back. There’s no shame in it, Instagram had to do it last month too. I don’t need to take pictures of receipts, I just need the app to work. You had so many good reviews for a reason, please don’t make me have to find another app! Old review: I’ve consistently used this app almost every day for the last few years to keep track of my budget, but the latest update has me quite frustrated. On the calendar there are little circles on the dates to let you know you’ve missed a scheduled transaction. Well now when I go to update the scheduled transaction it’s not there, but the circle is still there! It’s frustrating because I have all my bills scheduled, but they don’t always leave my bank on the day I schedule them for, so I just update them the next day, but now I can’t see them anymore. If you please fix this I’ll update it to the 5 star rating it deserved before this.

DO NOT PAY FOR THIS APP! I was using this while it was free and for the most part I was happy with it. Every once in a while there would be a glitch in my balance from an expense not getting added, or it would be double, or income would be doubled. I got back on to update accounts and now you have to PAY to be able to do the bare minimum! TRASH!
  • DB classic is best Nov 4, 2019

    By Drakuldragon
DB Classic is wonderful, functions perfectly. Ive used it daily for years with no trouble. One of the last updates to DB classic broke it for iPhone XS screens. I’ve got 10 items recurring on the first of each month, I can no longer scroll through that entire list and check them all off. It stays below the bottom of the screen. Unusable now, forcing me to use this crappy new one or not use recurring items anymore which is the whole point of being able to track expenses. Very unhappy about being forced into the new app from DB classic. What does it mean by “shutting down” oct 27? One of my biggest complaints is adding items on this version. Categories used to be so easy. Now it’s another click and scroll through a tiny window. Horrible in use! So many other “features” this app has are just clunky, unnecessary, and function poorly. I like the addition of photos and online access but having those is not worth dealing with the horrible operation of this app. There was nothing wrong with DB Classic. Forcing happy users to stop using your product is just bad business.

This app used to be perfect for an easy way to balance my checking account and manually entering my bills and spending in a nice calendar format. This new subscription system is rediculous, I don't need multiple calenders or users. There should be a one time charge for a single user vs a subscription for multiple users and cloud connectivity.

I have been using dollar bird to organize my finances for YEARS and have recommended it to plenty of people in that time, alot of whom have opted for the paid version. Now I'm limited to 3 transactions per day? All because it doesn't seem cost effective for me to pay for more than one calender and user since that's all I need? I get you need to be competitive but why nerf the free version to the point where it's hardly usable?
  • May 3, 2021

I've used this for years and loved it- but recently transactions often don't sync. They periodically reappear/disapear. If I can't trust it to save the information I enter, it's unusable.
  • New interface is not as good as original Aug 25, 2017

    By tempest26
Dollarbird classic was such a good expense tracker app. It was simple, easy to use, colourful but very clean looking. I am disappointed that this new version of Dollarbird is inferior to the original despite being able to sync with cloud. Both the calendar and the transactions are larger now, so now you can only see two transactions per day, until you scroll. When you go in the report to see the spending of each category, it is now ordered alphabetically, the original version put them in descending order from most expensive to least, which is much better. This version tries to pack more details in the report but it ends up looking less clean and is harder to read. It also crashes a lot, and being online it is slower to load up than the original. Please please bring the old interface back!

  • Absolutely Indispensable Oct 17, 2019

    By amandarbintz
This app completely changed how I manage my finances. I use it compulsively. I don’t know how I’d get by without it. When I found Dollarbird, I was fresh out of college and struggling to track my income vs. my expenses. Dollarbird came to my rescue. I love that it’s all manual. Other apps I tried that link to bank accounts often misread transactions and placed them in the wrong category, which resulted in the budget functionality not working properly. With this app, absolutely everything is within your control, and it’s so customizable. Budgeting is the one thing I wish Dollarbird had. I’ve come up with a workaround, but this app would be absolutely perfect if there were some way for it to alert me I’m approaching the limit on one of my spending categories for the month.
  • Great app - if I ever lost it I’d be screwed Sep 5, 2018

    By Jeyjayp
The only thing I would want changed (and it’s not even close to a game changer) is that when you do a balance update, the difference goes into the “money spent” chart under it’s own category. Other than that, this is a great app. It allows me to see my bills in real time from this moment to weeks down the road to months down the road to even years down the road. It would also be cool if it had a savings feature where it would keep track of what you should have in savings - now and later - based on what you tell the app you have and what you are putting in.
  • I love this app, too bad it doesn't seem like it's progressing Dec 2, 2019

Honestly this is the only app I've found that works with the way my brain works - having the running balance of the month displayed on a calendar is great for us visual thinkers. Sadly, it feels like this app is being run by a skeleton crew - there are no updates or real improvements ever and on browser, I constantly get this annoying notification in the corner with news from like 2017. Ugh. And yet - no one else has this, so I'm sticking with it. Until some tech company comes along and buys it, I guess?
  • Favorite Simplified Tracking Tool Nov 14, 2019

    By OliviaGabriele
This app is my favorite simple way to track spending and balances. I subtract my savings so that the balance shown is just my spending/loose cash and like to know how much I will have on any given day based on reoccurring expenses, and daily spending so that I can see when I’ll have extra cash to save extra one week, or for larger purchases. I think it’s also a really great way to EASILY avoid overcharging if you can see any danger zone days where cash might be tighter for one expense or the other and want to avoid dipping into savings.
  • Almost what I was looking for Jan 3, 2021

    By Auntie vintage
I can’t believe how hard it is to find a calendar based budget app that works. I like that I don’t have to link my bank accounts. It’s hard to get used to the fact that it upcoming expenses are reflected in balance forecast but today’s expenses are not until they are confirmed. I also wish there was a way to track various “sinking fund” balances for cash savings (like the envelope system). And I wish the overall could balance be split ti reflect the 3 different bank accounts I use.

Minus one star because there are several known bugs that have not been fixed for probably a year now; the development and maintenance of the app seems to be either at snail-pace or has stopped all together. Nonetheless most of the bugs are minor and don’t usually take away from the utility this app provides. The only major bug I recall is that when switching time zones, some calendar items shift a day or two – making the data inaccurate and rendering the app unusable until you’re back to your normal time zone. My workaround is to temporarily change my time zone on my device to my default, if I REALLY need to use the app while traveling.

This app is a much better way to track cash flow than the google calendar I was marking up by hand. The AI feature is handy for auto selecting expense categories based on the brief titles of each entry. I would give five stars except for one annoying bug - it constantly logs me out of the app, sometimes more than once per day, sometimes after several days of usage. My iOS is up to date; I hope this is something that can be fixed in the future. The benefits of the app far outweigh this inconvenience, however.
  • Amazing financial tool, some bugs Nov 19, 2017

I use Dollarbird everyday! Even for the smallest transactions, I open up the app and categorize it in a way that makes sense to me. It’s really given me more awareness and power over my assets! Some bugs after the latest update (balance updates won’t save) but none-the-less I’m very happy. Hope to see more future applications with regards to future worth analysis for savings accounts or even weekly financial tips.
  • Perfect for Day to Day Budget Dec 31, 2019

    By Bag of
This is the 2nd time I’ve used DollarBird and I will be sticking with it. We are in the midst of paying of bills and pretty much live day-to-day. This helps see how spending money today can affect your money in the future. Pros: - Really easy entry - handles recurring really well (allowing to apply one-off changes) - free version is extremely useful (pay to share with others or have more than one checkbook) Cons: - needs the ability to enter a “twice monthly” option (my husband gets paid the 15th and last day of the month) - a search function would be tremendous! I have to search day by day right now to see if I remembered to enter a bill Would be 5 stars if had search function. Love it otherwise!

Though it misses some small features that would be nice (like currency conversion and a calculator built into the expense input-like Venmo), the app hits the nail on the head for the majority of uses. The calendar format is nice and the summaries are helpful when you figure out how to use it. Not the easiest interface, but fills the niche without any bugs.
  • Great App Sep 6, 2018

    By Nandagokul
The App works great. It will be even more useful if you can add the feature to show graphs on annual spending as well. I would like to see how much is spent on a label at the end of the year to make necessary changes to the budget next year. Overall the app is great.
  • Great but missing giant feature. Feb 14, 2020

This is my favorite financial app except that it’s missing budgets! That’s nuts. It forces me to have two or three financial apps when I’d be happy to just use this one if they’d bring back the budgets feature like the older Dollarbird.

The app is perfect for tracking spending if that’s all you want. I’m hoping that soon there will be a budgeting option to set budget ceilings and send alerts when they are crossed.

  • Buggy, not as clean Sep 9, 2017

    By DeeLamps
The old dollarbird was so clean and did exactly what I needed. That app seriously turned my personal finances around. This new version had a lot of great things, but it's just so buggy. It freezes and shuts down all the time, you essentially can't use it when you don't have cell service/wifi, when you flip through different months on the calendar it's a 50/50 on whether the next month will actually load, the transfer feature between different account calendars just doesn't work (I try to use it to denote when I'm putting money in my savings), and switching between different calendars also takes two or three tries before it actually loads. I could keep going... Dollarbird classic was absolutely crucial in the last year for me, and it's disappointing to have to switch to this new version and then not have a product that can handle the type of use its users have come to depend on.

I have been using this app for 4 yrs now... I have a love/hate relationship with it. My biggest issue is FREQUENTLY the app stops syncing the stuff I enter and that means my balance is not accurate. This is so frustrating. I reach out about it and rarely do I get a helpful response

Nice and simple calendar for entering expenses and income. Not many bells and whistles. Too bad they are turning it into an expensive subscription app ($40/yr). If they kept a simple one calendar model for $10/yr, I would probably keep using it.
  • Preferred classic’s UI, hate the auto-category Dec 9, 2019

    By AppWatch456
Been using Dollarbird for almost 4 years now. Appreciate being to export the data now but I really miss the classic’s UI so much. If it weren’t that Classic is shutting down at the end of the month, I would have kept using it and not switched over. I also hate how the new version deals with the expense categories. Sometimes it guesses correctly but when I click done, it jumps back to uncategorized. Other times it guesses wrong and when I try to change it, it logs it so now I need to take extra time to go back and edit it again. Other times, it doesn’t guess for an expense I log every week (same exact thing). It’s so inconsistent and unreliable. I’d rather not have thing dynamic, trying to be real time thing. I really miss the classic version.
  • Interface is okay. But crashes all the time Sep 13, 2017

    By itsadrianlin
Edit: The developers responded to my review so I tested it out again. The autofill is pretty good and the overal system is better. HOWEVER, I can't confirm new transactions on the phone without it crashing. Also, in the chart view, you can't scroll to the next month as you could in db classic. Also, I can't find a way to delete categories I made by accident and now they show up in the auto-suggest. Previous: The original Ui was what was so great about db classic. I could easily find the icon that represented my spending since it was laid out on a grid. Now I have to scroll or really on the unreliable auto select. Please fix.
  • Multiple accounts Apr 16, 2018

    By wentworth.us.itunes
I just downloaded the app, so this may be user error. However, it would be nice if there was a way to have account balances for multiple accounts (e.g. checking, savings, cash, etc.). Perhaps this is what the “multiple calendars” option is? I often use different accounts for my everyday transactions so being able to track each of these would be extremely helpful.

I use this app everyday and it’s great except for one thing. It logs me out all the time and that I don’t like. Wish it was able to be fingerprint password protected to make it easier for log in if it is going to continue to log me out at random times.

This app was great until the upgrade. Now new entries don't sync to the app, and I have to repeatedly put in the same entries and refresh the app, and it still doesn't save new entries. The upgrade ruined the app.

If you are like others on this thread that really enjoyed the classic version of Dollarbird but don’t like the new one, look no further than an app called Money Manager by Realbyte Inc. That app is literally perfect in every way in my opinion and is infinitely more powerful and modern that this app. And they even have a free version but you should purchase it for the one time $3.99 price tag. I would even buy it if it was monthly. It is just amazing. I’ve searched for so long for a Dollarbird Classic replacement and I have finally found it. Everyone told Dollarbird’s developers that the classic was much better and they don’t really listen or care so moving on finally!
  • Annoying Bug, Please Update!! Sep 6, 2017

    By Igmn417
I've tried countless of times to fix the .01 off bug and it worked the first time but then it happened again. Now when I try to update my balance, the balance doesn't correct itself and instead the 0.01 that was suppose to go towards my balance went to my expenses instead and the balance stays the same. Under by 1 cent. It's extremely annoying. The app hasn't been updated since the 18th of August and you would think that after so many people reported the bug that the app would've had an update already to fix the issue. 🙄😪
  • No download from my bank? Jul 27, 2018

    By tedowiz
I was so excited that I thought I had finally found what I was looking for. I just want an app that will connect to my financial institution download my transactions, and show me when I’ve spent for the day. But then also take into account my scheduled transactions, my planned income, and give me a forecast for any day in the future based on that information. This looks like the perfect app, except I have to enter all my transactions manually. There is no way I could ever do that! Way too much in and out. I’m sad.
  • Got the app when it was free... Mar 4, 2021

    By emu604
...and then suddenly it’s not free. I like the app itself, it addresses my limited needs. But I specifically didn’t want to pay a monthly fee for this, so it’s more than a little frustrating to now be forced to either fork over $3.99/month or find and learn yet another money manager app. Maybe there’s some middle ground here, like offering a one time purchase option, or a cheaper $0.99 monthly option without “teams” features (or any other stuff currently in the premium plan)?

EXTREMELY disappointed in their new limits! I've been using DB for YEARS to keep my budget in check and recommend it to everyone. Suddenly, and without warning, they've changed their free model so that users are limited to an unreasonable 3 transactions a day unless you want to pay $10/mo. They don't even offer a lifetime option. How is an app that's supposed to help me control my spending going to start asking me for money? Very, very disappointed in y'all, Dollarbird. I'll be switching apps!
  • Used to love this until last update. Jan 4, 2019

    By Vmartin7
