I've donated to this project and also paid full price for the ios version. This is by far the best cloud encryption software you can get. Just understand what the ios version is... You're paying for the app, which allows you to manage single files. You are not going to get access via the file app, swiping of images, or anything else fancy. The app is as basic as can be, but it does the job of getting you access to files when needed.

Hey, you can manage folders and files by pressing \/ on the right side. Who knew?! Thanks for the reply, dev! I'm fairly happy with this app/service. It's nice being able to store files securely on a cheaper service without having to worry about my files being read/scanned.

Update: since my original review, a cache feature has been added. It still doesn’t let you pick and choose which files you’d like to have offline, but it’s better than nothing. Beware that it will start to take up lots of space if you use the app often, and the only way to reclaim that space is to clear the entire cache. That means any offline files you had get cleared and you have to open them up again to make them accessible offline again. It can be a hassle on devices with less storage. Original review: My only gripe with the iOS version is the inability to download files onto my device while keeping them in an encrypted vault. I often work and travel in bandwidth constrained environments (remote locations with no signal, flying without wifi, etc) and can’t use Cryptomator because I’m not connected to the internet. I don’t want to download unencrypted versions of the files from Crypomator partitions onto my device due to their sensitive nature. Being able to store encrypted files locally with Cryptomator would make it the ultimate secure storage solution for me.

  • No Folder Upload in iOS Apr 11, 2020

App works, and the concept is great. For some the shortcoming(s) of not being able to upload folders via the app and duplicate file name issue will be able to be worked around - for others these will be reasons to not purchase. Folders can’t be uploaded via the app itself - only selecting individual files is allowed. When you use the Share menu via the Photos app (which does allow you to select all) Cryptomator decides that all/a majority of your selected photos are duplicately named and the upload can’t proceed until the file(s) are renamed. I thought perhaps this was actually due to duplicate photos, but this is not the case - I would suggest everyone to go look at the Cryptomator iOS App help tag on their forums prior to app purchase.

Good app for additional encryption layers. Useful that it works with cloud storage and is cross platform. Update: they fixed the bug I encountered

While some minor UI issues, this app and tool has worked as advertised. I appreciate having a guaranteed endpoint encryption option even on Cloud services that claim end-to-end encryption, when it turns out there are still several vectors in to their services. I’d prefer that the folders are completely hidden/masked when not unlocked but I am sure a feature that developers can work. Additionally the iOS Files integration is still a bit spotty. Sometimes forcing me to save unencrypted on iCloud or device to then move it into a Vault. Once they fix some of these issues and update their mascot/logo (a bit hideous for a legit company), definitely will update to 5 stars!

I’ve used Cryptomater for a couple of years now to block cloud storage providers from scanning my files. While that’s still my primary objective I now work for a corporate company who relies on Microsoft 365 and OneDrive. So this prompts an opportunity to use Cryptomator to protect my files from the potential prying eyes of the IT department. I recommend this for all employees of any size company to protect their data.

Love it. I've tried Boxcryptor and Veracrypt but Cryptomator has just the right feature set for me. I don't need thumbnail previews, but it would be nice to have. I've heard of thumbnail cache leaks though so I'm ok without them. Love the simplicity, that I'm in control of security keys, open source, and the one time purchase not subscription. Perhaps that last one is my favorite. Oh yeah, despite screenshots it does have dark mode. The countdown until locked is cool. Happy with purchase.

No way to automatically store backup files from other apps, to a vault. 😕 I am currently using DropSync to make sure my my are backed up in the cloud. I would like to encrypt them while in the cloud, but there isn't any way to do that with this app. There needs to be a way to do this. I understand that exposing a vault to other apps is a security risk, so maybe Cryptomator needs a way to select local folders and map them to folders in a vault, and keep them synchronized (2-way, up/down only)

Stinks but I knew it would so no biggie. Doesn't offer grid view & doesn't do picture thumbnails (even after viewing the picture). Doesn't support Android's Storage Access Framework (SAF) so you can't open documents from apps like Office without downloading them (making editing and then uploading them manual). Boxcryptor is better in these respects but it uses a subscription model that requires an account so Cryptomator has the advantage there. Hoping it gets better, still $upportive of it!

Happens across multiple vaults, even after clearing Android app cache/data/reinstall. EDIT 1: How do I locate the file if the file names/structure are encrypted? Gdrive via web browser Recents tab shows activity some file changes when I upload from Android app.

After unlocking, hope to add a function. When viewing pictures, you can slide left and right to view the pictures before and after. Also hope to add a picture thumbnail function, which is very useful when there are many pictures.

I’m allowed to use my company issued computer for personal business, but they sync everything, so there goes my privacy. And what if their data gets hacked later? So I encrypt all my stuff and sync it on Google Drive. It’s all the security you thought you had already, but you were mistaken. This is what you need to protect your privacy.

Makes encrypting across devices stupid easy. Had minor issues with encrypting a folder on a thumb drive but since my primary use case is cloud, it doesn't matter much to me. Serves my needs in a user-friendly, open source way and isn't a subscription to boot! Well worth the money.

I have been trying all sorts of encryption apps this week and I am glad I found Cryptomator. It does exactly what I need it to do. Easily protect my files on my Dropbox. Dropbox has the best syncing and now I have the best encryption to protect my files. And it unlocks my encrypted files with Face ID on my iPhone X. Very easy to upload encrypted files to my Dropbox from within the Cryptomator app. Highly recommended!

Great idea for encryption and privacy however it’s frustrating because the app times out on every single upload and even while just trying to create a folder. Have to keep force quitting this and other apps trying to send files to it. The files successfully upload but Cryptomator sits there and hangs, holding the other app and your screen hostage. Hope there’s a fix on the way.

Just what I have been looking for. This is the most seamless encryption cloud synchronization tools I have found yet. The one thing new users should be mindful of is that the app must be open and unlocked to access the encrypted files. Additionally, I wish the service offered it's own cloud decryption solution what worked in a browser to open encrypted files remotely. Nevertheless, I don't see how that will be possible the way the service is currently engineered to work. I think the mobile app is well worth the $5.00 (US) and I am planning on donating at least $10.00 (US) to the desktop version of the app. Thanks.
  • IOS Files Integration Mar 3, 2021

I love this tool but can’t use it yet. I’ve paid to use a competing product simply because I require the IOS Files integration. I know it is slated to come and on that day I will be 100% Cryptomator. Still giving 4 stars because this is such great work and I recognize that FOSS sometimes takes a little longer.

Great app, but it's missing a very essential feature! I have hundreds of pictures, and it's really hard to find a specific one by the name alone. It would be greatly useful if you could add "gallery view" mode in which we can see the thumbnails of the pictures in the folder!

Thank you for the reply. After a day of WTHs, one of those that make no sense for those who deal with tech, I was able to finally download and install the app. As for the app itself, it works great, as advertised and as expected. Thank you for the good work and please excuse the lowered rating I gave earlier as it was a reflection of my frustration with google play.

The app is great and does things as advertised. But their are concerning bug. When you set vault to auto-lock instantly, it does lock normally on most condition. But when you turn off and turn on the screen of the device while viewing certain file, the vault is not locked and can’t be locked until I restart the app. I think this is a serious security issue and I hope it will be fixed soon.
  • Can’t open from “Files” app Jan 18, 2020

    By kreviewsapps
A lot of cloud services as well as local storage can be accessed via the native iPadOS/iOS Files app. Maybe I’m missing something, but from what I can tell, Cryptomator doesn’t seem to have a way to open a vault from the Files app, which limits you to using the cloud services built in as options in the app. Unfortunately this means I can’t use it a planned. Still great to see Cryptomator supported on iOS nonetheless!

It's good but, folder upload is lacking. This is incredibly tedious to use when uploading files in multiple folders! Screen time-out causes uploads to stop while in use. This option should only be active when not doing anything. Is it possible to add a local sync folder, for the vault(s), that encrypt and updates locally saved files to the encrypted vault(s) on the fly / automatically? Would it be possible to stop other apps from deleting the vaults? I imagine this might not be possible?
  • Mar 14, 2019

Not sure ... Should I rate it 5 stars, because it works as advertised. Or 1 star, because you can not save any files directly into the vault ("no moint point"). You have to save files outside the vault, then upload it with the app (even if the vault is on local storage) ... Knowing this, I still purchased the app. Hoping this will be added in the future :) And to support open source development.

Not being able to upload folders is a huge headache. Its only allowing to upload files. Plus, the iOS and MacOS are not truly in sync. I didn’t know this until after the purchase o_O. The concept of this app is good, but really need to fix these issues. Please fix or provide a remedy. Thanks

There are a few files that don’t open. It just stays in the “Loading...” screen forever and never works. I’ve verified the files are not corrupt or anything, or that it’s a bad file format. I have other identical files opening without a problem. Can’t seem to diagnose the issue.
