This app used to be a joy. It was on the forefront of the digital comic book reading experience with a healthy catalog of different titles. Since Amazon purchased and made changes to it this has been a horrible experience. Smart lists are gone, books are not categorized well anymore and the panels won't rotate in guided view. I will still use it for now because of past purchases I have made but I cannot recommend this app to comic book lovers any longer. Please don't install if you haven't.

The current version is inferior to the one preceding it. It is quite glitchy. Some functions work for a while and then for no discernable reason will stop functioning properly. This is especially the case with the library sorting function which has decided to be very hit or miss with series groupings. Half of my series which were formally grouped together are now shown as individual issues and are randomly scattered through out my library. Not a plus, to say the least!

Well I was trying not to hate on the new app, but man, this new version does suck. It does look pretty, the interface is smooth, but for someone that looks for books by publisher, we are completely screwed. After further issues with trying to find my library, I would like to thank Amazon for helping to make pirating a better option

New Update removed useful features
The removal of the smart list is a big drawback for me. I have become an infrequent reader the last few years and the organization of such rows as “current reading” and “recently purchased” helped to remind me of things to pick back up after long periods of time away. I will occasionally buy something to read later and grouping by recently purchased as opposed to the release date helps for finding older comics I currently bought to read easier . The fact that these synced to the cloud was very convenient when switching devices, as it helped to maintain reading list continuity. The “Library” ( which seem to be what was previously “My Library” ) is not of much use to me, as I have a accumulated a large collection over many years and having everything in one place, for me, can make finding something I was reading but cannot remember the tile of difficult. Making that and “Explore” the only options seems like a huge drawback to me from the previous version. While I still go to my local comic shop monthly to check my pull box for a few series, I mostly read digital for it’s convenience. I hope that at least some of the innovative features like the smart list and others removed can find there way back into was a great comic reader.

I absolutely hate the interface after the redesign. Would recommend to frustration enthusiasts. This is a minimum-viable product, it has an interface as unwelcoming as Amazon Prime Video and can't do basic things that the Marvel standalone app can (rotate screen, change settings easily... just a complete reduction in quality-of-use).

The recent changes ruined digital comics for me
The last major update has ruined reading digital comics for me. Almost everything about reading and navigating was made worse, on top of bug after bug I find when attempting to read. Unread issues don’t show when filtering by unread, some items disappear when you group by series, the reading experience is buggy for swiping and zooming… I really can almost only say one good thing “the app opens when I tap the icon.” Not to mention, the setting to not show purchased comics inside the kindle app doesn’t work, so now these are all mixed in with my books in that app. Now, even my kindle app is worse because of this. This was a poorly executed switchover.

Awful “improvements”. Please fix.
The Amazon takeover has been just the worst. There is always a delay now when you open the app and frequent hiccups where it delays input while reading downloaded comics. You can no longer read apps offline because it will undownload every single issue you’ve downloaded the moment you lose connection. I used to read on frequent plane trips but now that is no longer possible without paying for over-priced wi-fi which I refuse to do. They must be trying to pull data on reading habits or something but it has destroyed the clean, clear, easy experience that was the case before they bought it out. And the store is horrendous too, just cluttered and non-intuitive and frequently pulls you out of the comics section. In every single way they’ve worsened what used to be a great way to keep up with comics. Please fix all of this. Not even improve on what came before but get it back to approximating that level.

R.I.P. Comixology
Now that Amazon has killed Comixology the new App is a complete disaster, the Amazon Comixology/Kindle store is even worse and Amazon is refusing to fix and upgrade store and App, what a disappointment for all that like me have invested in digital comics.

Terrible UX and customer service
You can read comics, but they’ve really screwed up the shopping experience by making it like the kindle bookstore and removing the in-app wishlist. It’s harder to find new releases and searching is more tedious. I like the addition of being able to subscribe to a series and seeing all items in a series, but it really is 1 step forward and 10 steps back, so what’s the point? It’s been three months since they rolled out the 4.0 update and they aren’t listening to customer feedback aside from bugs that people have found because they made their customers non-consenting beta testers and released a broken app to make things easier on themselves. They’ve also introduced a “delete permanently” button that people can hit on accident so that customers might have to purchase an item again. It’s despicable. I’d be ashamed to be whoever green-lit this for release and being ok with it, completely ignoring feedback from paying customers. As soon as there’s another platform that does something similar, I’m moving to that unless Amazon decides to get their stuff together.

Great as a reader but
So while I can read comics through the app...I've lost the ability to buy comics through the app...no response from the support team...which used to be fairly responsive...

Do NOT subscribe to their “Unlimited” service.
I never read comics digitally but it’s easier than buying the physical copies of them. I prefer not to buy digital because if I’m going to spend the money on a book, I would much rather have it physical. Thought I would try this out while on vacation because I really wanted to read invincible. I signed up for their “Unlimited” service. Which by the name you would assume actually let you read more than just a chunk of a series. This is a terrible business model. If you only want to buy the digital issues it’s a good reader, however this subscription service is an outright lie. Most series with the “Unlimited” tag are misleading. That conveys that the SERIES is available to read in its entirety. I decided to read Invincible, downloaded what I could (up to vol 10 of the collected editions) only to learn after blowing through those 10 volumes that I’ve only read less than half of the series and if I wanted to read the other 15 volumes I would have to shill out even more cash than I am paying. If you want comics to survive in the modern age you need to adapt to modern consumer standards. Especially for big name series that draw massive attention such as Invincible.

I have used this app for years, and have always loved it. The new update that has changed the format makes it very difficult to navigate or to even know what I have downloaded. Having to download a sample from the store and view it in my library rather than viewing on the comics page in where you can also purchase it is a huge step backwards. In a world where comic sales are struggling, this isn't helping.

New 4.0 is now Kindle Reader for Comics…and not good.
I definitely understand bugs in a new version that can only come to light when the new version sees the light, but I feel like 4.0’s shortcomings go well beyond that. The fact that less than half of my titles showed up in my library is a big part of my frustration. To add to that same frustration, when I go to borrow a title back into my library it tells me I already have it. I also cannot borrow the title through Kindle Reader due to the same reason, which was supposed to be a big highlight in the update. Also in the description of the new update it promised something akin to “faster/more reliable downloads” which isn’t the case. Let me be clear, some of these books are big files so a longer download time should be expected. However, when your titles keep getting stuck in “download limbo” and you opening them renders a blurry image that doesn’t go away after loading then I think the problem may be bigger than file size. I do not envy the developers in their task (whatever the goal may have been), but I have PAID for this service for a long time and the disruption in that isn’t sitting well with my extraneous income (or lack their of). I recommend don’t spend your money simply because of this new update, I may not be any longer.

On the plus side maybe this will get more people to support their local comic book stores. Because on the downside this is the worst user interface I have ever seen, a colossal step down from how it was before. It used to be really intuitive, but Amazon somehow came to the conclusion that they should remove every good feature comixology ever had

Awful, horrible, catastrophe. I won't comment much about using the app for shopping, because I generally do that on my computer (and it's awful on the computer, but that's another piece of software). But as for reading... This version is about a hundred steps backwards from before. If you used to like reading in Guided View, you'll hate it now. Panels are presented smaller than necessary to fit on your screen. If you have auto rotate on and you turn your device 90° for landscape format, it drops back to displaying the whole page. Double tap again to get a single panel and it's *tiny* — narrower than the short dimension of your screen even though it's displayed with the width along the long dimension; it uses about 1/8 of the total screen area. Which means it's too small to be readable on a phone. And there's no way to zoom in. [Added later: On further investigation this isn't true of all books. Some present well and some don't. In fact it may be only previews that are as mangled as I stated. Or is it? I'm not enthusiastic about buying a full version just to see if it's as mangled as the preview.] What used to be a pretty decent reading experience on a mobile device has become practically unusable. (And it's not really any better on the computer either.) What I've just found out, though, is that you can use the Marvel app to read any Marvel books you've bought, even from Comixology! And it's pretty nearly the same as the old Comixology app (for now, anyway). Doesn't help for non Marvel books but it's something.
