  • Shiny but missing polish Apr 4, 2020

Carcassonne functions, but it missing some features that hold it back from being truly great. 1) There really isn’t a simple way to play with your friends. Currently without a turn based option/notification system you’d all have to be available at the same to play a game together. Which isn’t ideal since people are busy. 2) The interface isn’t as intuitive as it should be. I had to stumble around all sorts of menus to try and find out how to change my color. 3) When waiting for your turn, you can’t plan ahead, since the interface is showing the AI’s tile. I suppose that’s the way the rules are written, but it’s a shame that you sometimes think it’s your turn and you have a great tile, only for you to realize that it was just showing you the computers instead. Finishing with some positives: The game plays smoothly and the placement options for where to put a tile are made to be obvious which I appreciate. I like the graphics and the animations. Options for playing with and without farmers is appreciated as are the toggle switches for being able to glance and see how the fields are currently owned/shaped. Carcassonne is a great game with nice new look that is lacking some features that keep it from giving you more value for your purchase.

A little glitchy and disconnects from the game quite frequently. If you have an older phone it'll take longer to reconnect. Things to improve: 1. Improvement to disconnection - either quicker reload or to stop the issue. 2. Buying expansions do not show on Family account phones.

  • Getting too harsh of reviews Apr 17, 2020

Lots of reviews are pretty harsh for a game that works pretty well, is a good adaptation, and looks decent. I’ve been playing single player and online with family and enjoyed both. Yes there is room for improvement but give them a chance to address the issues. Pros - good adaptation of actual game, intuitive interface, overall good art, AI keeps single player interesting, you can play with your friends online, you can set time limits such that playing with friends can essentially be turn based so games can go over many days, features like showing fields and tiles left is fun, seems only host of online game needs expansions for everyone to play expansion Cons - needs a recap feature because if you aren’t online at the end you can’t see how an online game ended, the chat in online play disappears every time you leave so you can’t have a dialogue, sometimes takes a moment to connect or disconnects but not terribly so, wish you could turn specific features in expansions on and off (e.g. use builder but not pig or just use tiles from expansions but not other mechanics), can only add friends to friends list if they are online. Overall I’ve enjoyed both the single and online play. Absolutely worth the cost if you enjoy the board game.

    1. Brilliant implementation of the physical board game with added graphical tweaks to make things clearer (ex: completed castles, roads, who owns which fields, etc) 2. One of the best games for online play with friends over a video call chat with some food & drinks. 3. Fits & performs perfectly on my S8+. Not cluttered at all. Makes good use of screen space. 4. Fitting background music & sound effects 5. Easy to understand tutorial and rules for reference

  • Not as good Jan 24, 2021

I have the old Carcassonne and play online with some of my children. It works very well, when you are notified of your turn the app opens quickly and it is just very quick and slick. This new app is NOT better/faster. Oh sure the pieces bounce and the graphics are more vibrant but the game play is SO much slower even with things turned off in settings. You do get a notification when it’s your turn but opening the app takes a long time. If you leave the app open and switch to a different app or screen or put your screen to sleep, opening the app takes a long time. Let’s Speed things up please.

Purchased the game with great excitement. It turned out you have to spend more and more and more. Asked for a refund straight away. Rubbish. Staying with the real boardgame version which is free after you purchase it.

Love the game, despair at the app... It should be so much better. We can forgive the clunky UI but given the baked-in karma system there can be no forgiving the glitchy issues with online play. The app freezes in the last ten seconds of a game and it just disappears, no way to resume, no knowing who won and worse still, negative karma for not finishing your game and no points for your ranking... This is just bad, bad, bad app development. I love the game but this app needs to sort out the basics

The game’s timer has caused me to lose twice! The first time, it subtracted way more time than I’d actually spent, and it timed me out even though I hadn’t run out the full 15 minutes! The next time, the game was in the middle of scoring, but it hadn’t stopped my clock (which again, was running too fast), and the clock ran out in the middle of scoring so it automatically recorded a loss for me. The camera always pans away from the full board when someone places a tile. I’m constantly adjusting the camera so I can see the board after I’ve placed my tile. Why do I want to stare at my just-placed tile until the other player places theirs? I don’t. This interpretation of the game is just not as clean and nice and simple and functional as the previous version. As a side note, I bought this game on Nintendo Switch as well. I was excited to play Carcassonne online there ... but, no dice! There is no online!

Everything is broken! Login is broken, resetting password is broken, even their support contact form is broken. My login credentials just stopped working a ago. It keeps saying "connecting to our servers". When I try to log in it says my username and password do not match. I am certain that I am entering the correct password. However, I tried resetting my password and that did not work either. I spent forever filling in a very detailed bug report only to have the contact form crash as well!

Finding friends via chat is clumsy, you can’t invite them via SMS or by link, and they didn’t show up searching by name most times I tried. When my online match was over it just ended the game and showed me the main menu, no match summary or anything. The timer had run out but still should have shown the summary so we all knew how we did. The turn mechanics need to be more flexible. I couldn’t leave the app and come back to take my turn without it saying “internet disconnected”. I do need to do other things on my device like chat and browse, so this is a deal breaker. I want the option to play timed matches OR a turn based match with friends as we are able and maybe with notifications when it’s my turn.

  • Works great. Lots of fun. Pretty layout. May 27, 2020

I think many reviews here are bitter about a previous app which no longer exists. I started playing table top Carcassone last week for the first time. Then bought the app a day later. I don’t know the old app. But this one is good and worth paying a couple of dollars for. You can play against a very good AI, the last one of the four is very tough (at least for me) - the others easier. You can play online against other players which also worked well for me. I didn’t notice any lag as some complained about. A brief tutorial for the first time player might be helpful when facing other humans. I’m still not sure what the icons in the game selection menu really mean and I have no idea what the ranking points are and how to gain or lose them. I’m also not sure if those games or with abbot and river or just standard. I didn’t buy any of the other expansions yet. In sum, I like it. I almost wouldn’t have bought it because of the reviews. But they seem to be more about other stuff than the app itself.

  • Doesn’t deserve all the negative reviews Aug 26, 2020

I bought this game with some trepidation after seeing all the negative revues but I have had no problems with it at all. I feel like a lot of people were really attached to the original Carc app (which I never used) and so they are unfairly down on this one. The graphics are great. The game plays smoothly, the controls are easy to use, it has a lot of features that I really like like farm highlighting. The AIs are challenging at different levels. I haven’t had any trouble with online play or setting up a game against my wife. A lot of people have complained about the game just ending when the time you set at the beginning runs out. That sounds really annoying but I just always set it to the max (14 days or something) and it hasn’t been a problem. All in all I love Carcassonne as a board game and I really like how it was implemented here as an app.

I have played this version on my pc while playing the former iOS game on my iPad and iPhone. I have always preferred this game to the other, and I was looking forward to its release in the App Store. I know everyone has their own preferences, but I don’t think this game is as bad as many of the reviews indicate. I really enjoy playing it and I’m glad to finally see it available for iOS!

Occasionally glitchy. Exs: A piece never shows up, an error occurs and won't let you back in, placing your tile boots you from game, your pieces stay in a completed city, etc. It's also unfair that time ticks while scoring. Especially in the bigger expansions where every piece is accounted for in a huge city. Overall really user friendly and fun.

Good game but I have problems with online matches. One problem is when the oponent is disconected and I have to play the AI. The game should end and the remaining player should automatically win. Insted I have a timer and the Ai doesnt so it feels like Im playing speed chess against an opponent who is playing regular chess.

Just as the title indicates, the AI is really slow to play if you equip much in terms of the add-ons. I have a pretty new iPad and it's still a problem.

While the game is fun to play, with a decent level of AI, it is spoilt by needing to re-log in regularly. Also, limited add-ons / game tile sets.

The former developer created an easy to follow game. This developer has spent too much time on the graphics and silly bells and whistles. The intricate graphics make it so difficult to see where the meeple sit. I would rate the app higher if the graphics were simplified.

The game is amazing, one of my favourites, bit there are some really serious issues. The main one being that the timer keeps counting down whole scoring after the game has ended. I just lost a game I should have won because while it was adding up the scores my timer ran out 😡

Switching to this game because the other company lost their licensing. I was excited for the cross platform version so we could add more friends. However, Load of game and switching games always goes to load page that takes a long time. The game chooser doesn’t tell you which game you have a move in. If you’re in a game and want to go to main menu it says you are opting out of the game. We have a group that is multiple continent and the game takes weeks due to time zones. And we regularly have 3-4 games going at one time. It would be good for Asmodee to look at what their iOS predecessor did right and copy it. I don’t think fancy 3D graphics is the most important thing when trying to play with friends.

Most recent update has been better. Only issue I have now is when games finish, you can't see the score if you don't play the last piece. Update: This app is bad. So many issues including when playing online sometimes it will make you play your opponents turns, kicking people out of games, etc.

  • A Sad Day for the Kingdom of Carcassonne Apr 6, 2020

    By Pete0596
The old Carcassonne app, which thankfully I still have, was a masterpiece. It led the way for amazing board games on iPad. Everything was thoughtfully done, and it was extremely popular and well-loved. By comparison, this app is a joke. The new 3D graphics are nice (if a bit jagged) at first but distract from the game and make it quite uncomfortable to play on larger boards; the multiplayer is unreliable (which problem Asmodee Digital seems to repeat with each game so far); the interface and translations are poor. The beautiful art, music, sound design, and voiceover are gone, replaced by thoughtless content from a seat-of-the-pants dev shop. It is the end of an era. A great app bites the dust and is replaced by a poor one. A sad day for the kingdom of Carcassonne.
