I have been using BitGym for a while but wanted to wait for some time to try most of the trails and features before I leave a review. As others have, I also tried a number of other apps and this one has been the best so far. The trails are great, video quality is excellent on my iPad Pro, and I have not had any issues during the video playback. I am also very happy with the choices of trails and the locations selected. The app controls are extremely easy to use and there is no learning curve. I also appreciate that I can use this app for multiple exercises, running, Elliptical, bike machine, etc. I have all 3 and use the app for every workout. So how could it get better? Really two things. In another very similar app, there is an option to use vibration to detect movement of the user or the speed of movement instead of the iPad/iPhone camera. It would be excellent if BitGym can support this feature as well. The camera does not always work well depending on room lighting and the video sometimes stops mid play thinking the user has stopped. Another improvement would be to work with the older iFit equipment that are audio controlled instead of Bluetooth controlled. There are still many devices like this in use. Overall, I highly recommend this app. It has definitely helped make my workouts more enjoyable as I visit some of the most beautiful and amazing sites around the world!

I’ve tried 5 or 6 apps with the same concept. This is the best of them so far. However, it stutters a lot, even on a Wi-Fi network, and a lot of times it goes into an “initializing” mode in the middle of a workout and stutters backward through the video. The coached workouts could be improved by not having the coach’s face on there — just the audio (no offense to the coach meant at all — just not all Wi-Fi m earbuds work well with syncing with the video, so this puts the audio out of sync with the mouth moving — we can’t all afford a $160 pair of Apple headphones). So removing the facial video inset would make the coached version work better for a greater majority of people. Also, it would be nice to be able to have the music track separate from the coaching, so then we could use our own music, the same as on the uncoached version. I would also like to see an option for integration with fitness devices like Fitbit. The camera only option doesn’t really do a good job of matching pace. A direct reading from a fitness device would be better. And it could also take heart readings from that, too, and not be limited to an independent heart rate monitor.

I love so much about this app. I've used it several times now. You have no idea how much it helps when the scenery is passing at your pace, until you have that capability. I have had buffering issues a few times. The fact that you can't move the video forward, or back, is kind of annoying, but I figure that that's a minor inconvenience. I wish that they had an option to just purchase the routes you want, instead of having to pay a monthly fee to use them.

I’ve been using BitGym for almost 3 years now and could not be any more enthusiastic about it. I bought a treadmill that was iFit enabled and that software was a disaster, IMO. So I went looking for a similar, video guide of runs and landed on BitGym. The pros: seriously immersive experience. The video quality is fantastic and the routes are gorgeous. I’ve hiked several of the trails irl and it truly brings me back like I’m actually running on thru the forest, along the beach, or in the heart of the city. The interesting facts that pop up are easily enough ignored, but I like them as a way to refocus my mind and learn something new. The cons: it doesn’t sync with my treadmill to automatically raise/lower the incline. Occasionally the app crashes mid-run, though this occurred more often the first year or two I was using it and less often now. Wishlist: for someone to upload marathon and half marathon routes from beginning to end. Not during the actual race, but the route so that I could experience what running the route would actually be like. More trails. Now that users can upload high quality video, I hope to see something like that in a future release. It would also be fantastic to know what cities/trails/hikes are on queue or on a list for eventually, if it gets some users to help out. In all, a 5* app that has been my go-to when I’m training indoors and keeps getting better with time. Definitely a satisfied user!

I really enjoy this app, however, there is not that many tours so I have used all of them and it is starting to become a drag to visit the same place. Having a new area to run to is something I always look forward to and the new scenery keeps me motivated but there hasn't been any new tours uploaded yet so I am hoping a few new ones will pop up soon and when/if they do it will be worth the 5 stars and the monthly subscription that I feel is totally worth it otherwise.

I've been using this for 6 months now. I've done over 180 workouts and 290+k steps. I bought a second hand elliptical machine in good condition and added this to it. Obviously it doesn't matter what machine you have unless you use it. But this program really makes using the elliptical machine enjoyable for me. I have a few iPads sitting around so adding this program was a no brainer. Beautiful scenery and the program runs well. For the most part it's glitch-free. Only complaint is there are times when I have to pause the program during a workout and get off the machine. When I get back on, sometimes it takes a while before the program tracks my movements correctly again. Otherwise I love it and I would highly recommend it. It has made working out not only bearable, but enjoyable.

  • Overall very nice app Jan 14, 2021

I’ve been using BitGym for several months now; and quite a bit more since being sheltered in place these few months. Overall it’s been a mental life saver in mentally transporting myself to my favorite places (Hawaii). I like that I can use Pandora/my music while also on this app. I also tried the coached portions, but realized I’m more comfortable leisurely riding my indoor bike through the locations myself. Also, the app support is very quick to email respond, and responds with an honest answer and soloutions. Overall for around $10/month and how it’s helping me, I’ll say it’s well worth it. **Update: Jan 2021, I canceled my membership and deleted the app because it crashes, lags making it impossible to enjoy, uses tons of bandwidth.
  • Downloads keep freezing after updates Oct 30, 2017

    By Lyvso3
Every few updates all my downloaded videos stop working and I lose all my unlocked courses. If you are like me and have to watch your download data because it is not unlimited, then it becomes a big problem. Having a subscription based app, I would expect this not to keep happening, but it did again after the last update. The app wanted me to sign in on WiFi before I could see the courses. I downloaded the app again after I contacted support and it is still happening. I have now moved to Treadmill Trails where I will own the videos. I will miss two of the courses here but I still have some of the older videos I had bought on Virtual Active before they made this subscription based.

Used it twice and it locked me out of all but one video..How can you decide if you want to subscribe on 20 minutes of use. $10 a month seems a bit steep to use this app but I may have got sucked in had I actally had more time to see how it all worked..It would not hurt to leave 10 videos up to let people get a feel for it. If they like it they may just send you some money....

  • Poor video quality, too many people in them Dec 11, 2018

    By NMLady97
The app is pretty easy to use and it detected my running speed well, but I did not find the videos enjoyable. The fact that there are people in the videos ruined the whole scenic run experience for me. On the plus side, at least I now know that I will never want to visit northern Italy - so crowded! Even the trails that run through the woods were full of tourists. Also the video quality is poor so the vegetation looks blurry on my TV - makes me wonder if I am having a stroke. Not worth $8 a month for me, so I will just have to find some scenery for the TV that is actually scenic.
  • Overpriced for casual user Aug 28, 2018

    By 2much42little
the motion sensor only works if you can prop your iPad just right and then it is limited. Still I would be ok with manual, but it is overpriced for most people. They need to offer based on usage levels- maybe $3 a month for 2 hours per week. Netflix and other movie subscriptions are not much more and you watch those more than 30 minutes per day with royalties going to the movie companies. The free version is too limited. Only reason I give it a 2 star rating is that some people may not mind the 5 or 10 minute limits or at least interruptions, and only 6 trails.
  • Needs several improvements for $10 a month Jul 27, 2021

I like how the app finally doesn't require camera access, however, It uses over 1-inch of the bottom of the screen. I have a Gold's Gym bike that has a black tablet holder in the same spot. I cannot see whatever is at the bottom without using plastic straws. So I'm no longer required to use plastic straws since the app doesn't need the camera anymore. HOWEVER, the buffering business is just wrong. I'm on a +500mb internet connection and there's no reason that the app is taking forever to download to less than 1mb/sec.
  • Crashes and buffers - unusable Feb 10, 2018

    By yesitsmyrealnickname
I’ve used this app for years and it seems to have gotten worse to the point that it is no longer usable. The app is constantly crashing, it won’t even stay open at this point. When I was able to open the app, it is endlessly buffering and unable to stream to my Apple TV. I know this is not an issue with my network because I’m not having this problem with any other app.
  • Fair warning: DO NOT SUBSCRIBE Apr 15, 2019

    By leitejl
I just canceled my subscription because, suddenly, for no reason whatsoever, the premium features got locked and the account set back to “free” mode. I felt this app had something going for it, but I can’t put up with that incompetence. Really horrible customer experience. This is just another pathetic attempt to take your money under the disguise of yet another workout app. Stay away from it.

And there’s no contact number to call to resolve the problem - and no answer to my many emails!!! What are they using the 9 bux a mo from each user for?!?!

Absolutely in love 😍 but I still have the issue where the app logs me out if I open the app while in offline mode. My device is LG G8 ThinQ running Android 10. Other than that, it's actually impressive to see the quality and the quantity of content you guys have curated. I was looking an for app with the exact same features for a very long time and you guys absolutely nailed it. In the future, maybe you can partner with Renpho for their AI bike which would be game changer.

    By sitkajerry
I’ve always found workouts on gym equipment slightly boring, as my mind would wander during the exercise. During the pandemic, I would often be in self-isolation doing workouts on my elliptical and rowing machines to relative monotony. Then I came across BitGym. The visual stimulation front the 190+ tours and the tracking my movement with my iOS camera (iPhone of iPad), allowing the video to sync to my motion.... I moved, the video played; I stop, the video stopped was awesome. The visual stimulation helped the time pass faster during the exercises. It’s basically given me a breath of freedom mentally during my workouts, so that workouts are fun again. The BitGym team is producing new places to travel and explore around the world monthly. It truly is an investment into my health, and I feel that investment was well worth the cost.

I’m in love with this app. I tried a few before I purchased one since most seem to have limited accounts without a subscription but this is my favorite. I love the scenery, I love the quality. Mine doesn't lag or stutter at all, we live in a city and have pretty stable wifi. I like to set my speed rather than have it track me. The ONLY thing I wish was different is that it wouldn’t cut the trail and hop you around to a different section so frequently. I do like having the variety of scenery but I wish I could follow one path for a little longer. However, this app has been a workout game changer for me hands down. I actually can have fun on the treadmill now!

I did 2 of the trial rides, and loved the views, the guide support and encouragement. I took advantage of the month free due to Covid, but will subscribe. I hadn't ridden in a while due to not finding a good app, but now I'm excited to do more!!
  • The Best Exercise App Sep 5, 2020

    By 1000 Splinters
I've used many different apps to keep me engaged during my morning exercise, and this one is my absolute favorite, the one I keep coming back to. Not only does it have the best selection of trails, but it has the genius function of speeding up the trail when you do, and slowing when you do. It's just like being on the trail as you move. And it tracks rpm very accurately. I highly recommend it! The main downside is the most recent version stripped overall progress tracking. You can only see the last few months in the app, and can't even tell how many sessions you've done in total. That needs a long-overdue correction.

Videos perform great, as long as they are downloaded over WiFi first; otherwise, it may stutter (gotten better over time). That stuttering used to lead to skipping to the next segment or course, but that seems to be rectified now. My only complaint would be that the app seems to have lost its iPhone X compatibility with this latest release in iOS 12. The screen is back to a rectangular view, a la the iPhone 8. Will this come back? I miss the wider view, especially on the Road to Hana, Maui, HI course. I’ve used the app throughout the iOS 12 betas, but this is the first bug I’ve seen.
  • I LIKE it! Jan 5, 2021

Getting bored looking at the wall while I’m sweating it out on my old Schwinn recumbent, so I tried Fitness+. Meh. Onscreen stats are cool, but the urban warehouse/gym with trainers yelling at me constantly isn’t my thing. Peloton app looks to be more of the same. Tried BitGym - NOW we’re talking! I miss my Apple Watch stats, but riding through virtual outdoor locations with only occasional trainer prompts (which are sometimes actually helpful) is right up my alley. I was skeptical about the app getting my rpm’s via the iPad camera but SURPRISE! They’re solid and within 1 or 2 rpms of the on-bike readout. I’d give it 4.5 stars - just wish there was a way to see my Watch stats onscreen, but maybe that isn’t feasible.

Literally just tried the free version - just for a minute. My row machine is nothing fancy and well since it's basic this app makes my experience on my machine one that I never thought I would have. I got lost in the scenery and feel I am literally there and don't want to stop rowing. I literally fell in love with my "basic" machine because of how true BitGym makes my experience. Thank you, makers of BitGym!!! 4stars for now. Havent tried all the features.
  • Community Tours Mar 30, 2018

    By Sangonzo
I like the idea of the community tours. However, when I tried them out, I can tell they are done by novice developers. The videos don’t run smoothly or transition smoothly specially during turns in the videos. Several times I almost tripped because the videos paused suddenly or handled a turn oddly. I can definitely tell the difference between these videos and the videos that were done by professionals with professional equipment. I probably will not use the community tours again. Too risky for my eyes and steps. I’m happy with the application overall. I just subscribed for another year.

Good app for the cost. Easy to download your favorite circuits if your Wi-Fi isn't putting out a good enough signal. Wish there were more cardio coach series tours. Enjoy the community tours. Biggest complaint as an Android user is still no HRM support. Ya''ll have been "working on it" for a very long time. Let's get that done, ya? I'm using Wahoo as a work around, but I'd like the app to tell me what level I'm at.

I would prefer to run outside but this has been great for the treadmill or elliptical days. I'd say without good wifi though, it can be a little choppy streaming and has even been choppy with cellular. I could download I suppose but can't afford the space on my device. Again though, that could totally be related to the wifi or cell service, not sure. It's very cool though that it definitely picks up your cadence properly as I've tested it with my garmin cadence as well as my elliptical cadence and it's usually only 1 or 2 spm off.
  • Best Available But Needs Work Oct 13, 2019

    By claidheamdanns

Missing features: rewind, forward, remember last location when reopening, include sound track with all videos, eliminate echo on soundtracks, use stabilizer for all videos, make sure audio correctly syncs with video.
  • Upgrading is a pain Feb 21, 2021

    By Jenfr26
LOVE the scenes but upgrading is a pain. Having to go through a website sign up and can just use the app makes it super inconvenient. And I don’t see where it just auto pays. If it did that it would be perfect!!!!
  • Works okay Sep 29, 2020

    By tadz00ks
It worked really good until iOS14, when I stop on the treadmill this keeps on going yet it doesn’t detect my movement. There is a option for set speed, but I have mine on manual. I wish this would be patched..
  • Premium nor so much Jun 28, 2018

I like the scenery, but I don’t like that the app can’t consistently find my camera (rather me in my cameras view) even after walking through all of the troubleshooting points.
  • Can’t change music and have coach Aug 8, 2018

    By lovemysweetbabies
I REALLY wanted to buy this app for the coached runs, but I need to be able to change up the music. The music is unchangeable, if you mute it you also mute coaching.

  • Overall very nice app Jan 14, 2021

    By Beans2800

  • Sound Dec 27, 2019

    By Suewhoo92
I was only able to use it a few times before the sound cut out. I think it is a great app but without any sound to hear the coach speaking, it becomes useless to me.
  • Seriously? Jan 9, 2019

    By Not HavingIt
I’m giving a rating of 2 based on the fact, that this app was too cheap to offer a free month before the billing began. I will be canceling as soon as I can before the next billing date due.
  • Something changed Feb 23, 2021

Over a year ago this app was amazing! It matched the rpm and stayed consistent! Now the meter goes all over the place! So I won’t get any accuracy on how I am doing! It’s irritating! I used to love this app!

  • Needs several improvements for $10 a month Jul 27, 2021

    By fieldtripz

  • The worst May 18, 2018

The subscription fee has no problem smoothly going thru my bank account - but when I’m ready to workout - nope! Each week I get “subscription not found for the Apple ID! So frustrating. And there’s no contact number to call to resolve the problem - and no answer to my many emails!!! What are they using the 9 bux a mo from each user for?!?!
  • Love to try but keeps freezing May 31, 2020

I’d was excited to try after a referral but I cannot even sign in as the app freezes after a few minutes of being accessed. Very disappointed. I’ve even tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Issue persists. 🥺
  • Video Stalls A lot Aug 28, 2018

    By Cashcraze0123
I could see myself using and loving this app while walking on the treadmill. I love that sounds of nature is included. But the video stalls constantly, even though I have downloaded it. I would not purchase videos assuming they will also stall.
