I have been using BitGym for a while but wanted to wait for some time to try most of the trails and features before I leave a review. As others have, I also tried a number of other apps and this one has been the best so far. The trails are great, video quality is excellent on my iPad Pro, and I have not had any issues during the video playback. I am also very happy with the choices of trails and the locations selected. The app controls are extremely easy to use and there is no learning curve. I also appreciate that I can use this app for multiple exercises, running, Elliptical, bike machine, etc. I have all 3 and use the app for every workout. So how could it get better? Really two things. In another very similar app, there is an option to use vibration to detect movement of the user or the speed of movement instead of the iPad/iPhone camera. It would be excellent if BitGym can support this feature as well. The camera does not always work well depending on room lighting and the video sometimes stops mid play thinking the user has stopped. Another improvement would be to work with the older iFit equipment that are audio controlled instead of Bluetooth controlled. There are still many devices like this in use. Overall, I highly recommend this app. It has definitely helped make my workouts more enjoyable as I visit some of the most beautiful and amazing sites around the world!

I like Bitgym. I downloaded it at the start of the first lockdown as a replacement for my gym sessions. I used it initially on a static bike and projected to a bigger screen using Chrome cast. I enjoyed being able to cycle different routes throughout the world and learn things from the little bits of information that pop up en route. I then purchased a treadmill and started running some of the routes. I would highly recommend this app.

I’ve tried 5 or 6 apps with the same concept. This is the best of them so far. However, it stutters a lot, even on a Wi-Fi network, and a lot of times it goes into an “initializing” mode in the middle of a workout and stutters backward through the video. The coached workouts could be improved by not having the coach’s face on there — just the audio (no offense to the coach meant at all — just not all Wi-Fi m earbuds work well with syncing with the video, so this puts the audio out of sync with the mouth moving — we can’t all afford a $160 pair of Apple headphones). So removing the facial video inset would make the coached version work better for a greater majority of people. Also, it would be nice to be able to have the music track separate from the coaching, so then we could use our own music, the same as on the uncoached version. I would also like to see an option for integration with fitness devices like Fitbit. The camera only option doesn’t really do a good job of matching pace. A direct reading from a fitness device would be better. And it could also take heart readings from that, too, and not be limited to an independent heart rate monitor.

Absolutely love bitgym. I've been using regularly for several months and I really enjoy the variety of immersive tours, guided hikes and guided rides. My favorite part is the cardio coach sessions. Absolutely beautiful scenery. I would love to see some tours from Eastern Canada. It's the only app that has kept me wanting to use my spinning bike and treadmill regularly. I also love that you can download the tours in advance if needed and also display on a TV. Highly recommend!

I’ve been using BitGym for almost 3 years now and could not be any more enthusiastic about it. I bought a treadmill that was iFit enabled and that software was a disaster, IMO. So I went looking for a similar, video guide of runs and landed on BitGym. The pros: seriously immersive experience. The video quality is fantastic and the routes are gorgeous. I’ve hiked several of the trails irl and it truly brings me back like I’m actually running on thru the forest, along the beach, or in the heart of the city. The interesting facts that pop up are easily enough ignored, but I like them as a way to refocus my mind and learn something new. The cons: it doesn’t sync with my treadmill to automatically raise/lower the incline. Occasionally the app crashes mid-run, though this occurred more often the first year or two I was using it and less often now. Wishlist: for someone to upload marathon and half marathon routes from beginning to end. Not during the actual race, but the route so that I could experience what running the route would actually be like. More trails. Now that users can upload high quality video, I hope to see something like that in a future release. It would also be fantastic to know what cities/trails/hikes are on queue or on a list for eventually, if it gets some users to help out. In all, a 5* app that has been my go-to when I’m training indoors and keeps getting better with time. Definitely a satisfied user!

I use this app at least 5 times a week. It has helped me so much. I started with only being able to do 5 minutes on elliptical and now I can keep going for over an hour. The trails keep my interest and the coached runs keep me motivated.

I really love this app and use it several times a week when I walk on the treadmill. There are trails and city walks for every taste. I personally prefer the nature trails rather than city walks. It would be great if users could rate the trail after they complete it and perhaps provide a comment for feedback. That way the developers could provide more of what people like. One thing a few of the trails do that I find very frustrating is when they are not continuous and stop/skip too often. There is a trail in Northern Italy that does this about 50 times during the walk. Conversely, there is a trail in Japan that is wonderful in that it goes up the hill then turns around and goes back down. This lets the walker experience the trail from both directions. One more thing; I do like it when the app stops and looks around at the view in scenic spots. It is what I would do if I were walking the trail.

I really enjoy this app, however, there is not that many tours so I have used all of them and it is starting to become a drag to visit the same place. Having a new area to run to is something I always look forward to and the new scenery keeps me motivated but there hasn't been any new tours uploaded yet so I am hoping a few new ones will pop up soon and when/if they do it will be worth the 5 stars and the monthly subscription that I feel is totally worth it otherwise.
  • Turns regular exercise machines into hi-tech fitness!! Apr 25, 2020

I've been using this for 6 months now. I've done over 180 workouts and 290+k steps. I bought a second hand elliptical machine in good condition and added this to it. Obviously it doesn't matter what machine you have unless you use it. But this program really makes using the elliptical machine enjoyable for me. I have a few iPads sitting around so adding this program was a no brainer. Beautiful scenery and the program runs well. For the most part it's glitch-free. Only complaint is there are times when I have to pause the program during a workout and get off the machine. When I get back on, sometimes it takes a while before the program tracks my movements correctly again. Otherwise I love it and I would highly recommend it. It has made working out not only bearable, but enjoyable.

Used it twice and it locked me out of all but one video..How can you decide if you want to subscribe on 20 minutes of use. $10 a month seems a bit steep to use this app but I may have got sucked in had I actally had more time to see how it all worked..It would not hurt to leave 10 videos up to let people get a feel for it. If they like it they may just send you some money....
  • Downloads keep freezing after updates Oct 30, 2017

    By Lyvso3
Every few updates all my downloaded videos stop working and I lose all my unlocked courses. If you are like me and have to watch your download data because it is not unlimited, then it becomes a big problem. Having a subscription based app, I would expect this not to keep happening, but it did again after the last update. The app wanted me to sign in on WiFi before I could see the courses. I downloaded the app again after I contacted support and it is still happening. I have now moved to Treadmill Trails where I will own the videos. I will miss two of the courses here but I still have some of the older videos I had bought on Virtual Active before they made this subscription based.
  • Overall very nice app Jan 14, 2021

I’ve been using BitGym for several months now; and quite a bit more since being sheltered in place these few months. Overall it’s been a mental life saver in mentally transporting myself to my favorite places (Hawaii). I like that I can use Pandora/my music while also on this app. I also tried the coached portions, but realized I’m more comfortable leisurely riding my indoor bike through the locations myself. Also, the app support is very quick to email respond, and responds with an honest answer and soloutions. Overall for around $10/month and how it’s helping me, I’ll say it’s well worth it. **Update: Jan 2021, I canceled my membership and deleted the app because it crashes, lags making it impossible to enjoy, uses tons of bandwidth.

I love this App! I do a lot of treadmill running on an older treadmill that has no built in video and this is the perfect addition to my running. BUT, with the latest upgrade, it no longer works on my tablet. What a shame, and a waste of money.

I’ve always found workouts on gym equipment slightly boring, as my mind would wander during the exercise. During the pandemic, I would often be in self-isolation doing workouts on my elliptical and rowing machines to relative monotony. Then I came across BitGym. The visual stimulation front the 190+ tours and the tracking my movement with my iOS camera (iPhone of iPad), allowing the video to sync to my motion.... I moved, the video played; I stop, the video stopped was awesome. The visual stimulation helped the time pass faster during the exercises. It’s basically given me a breath of freedom mentally during my workouts, so that workouts are fun again. The BitGym team is producing new places to travel and explore around the world monthly. It truly is an investment into my health, and I feel that investment was well worth the cost.

I’m in love with this app. I tried a few before I purchased one since most seem to have limited accounts without a subscription but this is my favorite. I love the scenery, I love the quality. Mine doesn't lag or stutter at all, we live in a city and have pretty stable wifi. I like to set my speed rather than have it track me. The ONLY thing I wish was different is that it wouldn’t cut the trail and hop you around to a different section so frequently. I do like having the variety of scenery but I wish I could follow one path for a little longer. However, this app has been a workout game changer for me hands down. I actually can have fun on the treadmill now!

  • Great app that makes working out more fun Sep 18, 2018

    By MauiBoy
This app transports me to places around the world, which is a fantastic motivator to walk and work out. Videos perform great, as long as they are downloaded over WiFi first; otherwise, it may stutter (gotten better over time). That stuttering used to lead to skipping to the next segment or course, but that seems to be rectified now. My only complaint would be that the app seems to have lost its iPhone X compatibility with this latest release in iOS 12. The screen is back to a rectangular view, a la the iPhone 8. Will this come back? I miss the wider view, especially on the Road to Hana, Maui, HI course. I’ve used the app throughout the iOS 12 betas, but this is the first bug I’ve seen.
  • I LIKE it! Jan 5, 2021

    By Left0verture
Getting bored looking at the wall while I’m sweating it out on my old Schwinn recumbent, so I tried Fitness+. Meh. Onscreen stats are cool, but the urban warehouse/gym with trainers yelling at me constantly isn’t my thing. Peloton app looks to be more of the same. Tried BitGym - NOW we’re talking! I miss my Apple Watch stats, but riding through virtual outdoor locations with only occasional trainer prompts (which are sometimes actually helpful) is right up my alley. I was skeptical about the app getting my rpm’s via the iPad camera but SURPRISE! They’re solid and within 1 or 2 rpms of the on-bike readout. I’d give it 4.5 stars - just wish there was a way to see my Watch stats onscreen, but maybe that isn’t feasible.
  • Community Tours Mar 30, 2018

    By Sangonzo
I like the idea of the community tours. However, when I tried them out, I can tell they are done by novice developers. The videos don’t run smoothly or transition smoothly specially during turns in the videos. Several times I almost tripped because the videos paused suddenly or handled a turn oddly. I can definitely tell the difference between these videos and the videos that were done by professionals with professional equipment. I probably will not use the community tours again. Too risky for my eyes and steps. I’m happy with the application overall. I just subscribed for another year.

I would prefer to run outside but this has been great for the treadmill or elliptical days. I'd say without good wifi though, it can be a little choppy streaming and has even been choppy with cellular. I could download I suppose but can't afford the space on my device. Again though, that could totally be related to the wifi or cell service, not sure. It's very cool though that it definitely picks up your cadence properly as I've tested it with my garmin cadence as well as my elliptical cadence and it's usually only 1 or 2 spm off.

But I am disappointed in the continued inability to turn on/off things like the coach voice and music. I realize that I can mute the device and listen to my music on a different device, but I should be able to do it all in one. People have been asking for this for a long time.
