  • Great app, but.... Jun 19, 2021

    By Maine one
I’ve been using the app for a week and it is very accurate for western Maine birds. Great for the high pitched warblers that are on the edges of my hearing range. My biggest issue is that it freezes up and stops analyzing about every twenty analyses. At the times it’s frozen up (with the infinite spinning orb) there has been plenty of cell signal on my phone. Any suggestions of what to do in the field to correct this? Turning the phone off and on does not work. The only thing that works is to delete and reload the app. Big pain while in the field! I agree with another reviewer that it would be useful to submit feedback when multiple birds have resulted in the analysis. Often it’s right on one but not on all. Seems this would be good to know.

Fantastic for vocal id'ing but not perfect. I wish we could submit recordings that otherwise come up incorrect. I have a lot of blue jays with calls that sound like panicking squirrels (when they're in "warning" mode), but it keeps popping up as red tailed hawk, which I can confirm, and have reported, as the wrong species. Whenever I hear a new call, I open this app for id, then do my best to visually id, and it's been spot on.

First of all, this is a fantastic tool! You need to learn how to use it, but once you do it’s quite useful. Keep in mind, it’s far from perfect as a bird ID tool, as it often misidentifies with high certainty. You need to use it with other information if using it to ID. I wish it would use location and date information as Merlin Bird ID does to filter possibilities. For example, it was highly certain this morning’s yellow-green vireo was a red-eyed vireo; there’s no way it could be the red-eyed at my location this time of year. Duh! There is one annoyingly missing feature: the ability to bulk delete observations. Or at least to swipe-delete observations. Right now it’s a 3-click process. Multiply that times tens or hundreds…

It's an amazing app. It managed to pick up the sound and identify correctly even with many other sounds around... and I feel great relief at the transparency of the people behind it: makers, contributors, funders all listed as well as that it's for research purposes. Nobody trying to steal and sell my location and apparent love of birds. This is humane IT. Only thing for a new version; I'd like an option in the settings to switch off auto start recording when opening app.
  • Great app, can we keep observations but delete audio file? Jun 3, 2021

Loving this. Hoped song sleuth would do what this app does. Can you add the feature request to keep observation but delete audio file so we don't use up limited phone storage? Thanks

I love this app! I'm a novice but with this and a basic knowledge of what birds look like I'm able to discern what the birds that visit my feeders and in my backyard are. I wish it would say what it thought *all* the birds in the sound bite were, but I get that might be hard to program. I'd also love if it was able to discern what the different chirps meant but trying to figure out local "dialects" would be insane.
  • Needs features May 7, 2021

I’ve been using it for a few days and it seems to work pretty well. I only gave it three stars because it needs some features added. The most important feature would be the ability to submit feedback when it offers more than one possibility, in the likely event that we can identify the bird. The second feature would be the ability to import from our own library. I found that if you are in a remote location with spotty cell coverage the app is useless because it cannot connect to their servers. At the least we should have the option to record and select the part to be analyzed and then the ability to save it to be analyzed later.

this app is fantastic if you're in any way curious about the birds you hear around you! it's easy to use and understand the results. the only thing is like for it to have is a built in filter to eliminate or reduce cicada chatter because, no shade, they never shut up!
  • Amazing! Jun 3, 2021

This app is amazing. As an experienced birder I still puzzle over the trills of several species. The app provides virtually instant identification that has helped to reinforce (or correct!) my personal ID. And when I hear an unusual version of a song or only a partial song it has been quite reliable. It’s also great that it records for later analysis if I’m out of cell range. I’m not sure if this can be addressed, but it is sometimes difficult to get a good result when there are several birds vocalizing at the same time. My ear recognizes the separate songs while BirdNET seems “confused.” Any suggestions?

The app I was hoping someone would make, and someone actually did. I cannot express my gratitude for the developers, thank you so much ! Predictions are almost always accurate, though not so much for distant sources, or when multiple species sing at the same time. The UI is clean, friendly to use. No complaints. Add offline database maybe in the future.

  • Not able to identify - every single time Jun 17, 2021

    By LisaN08
I’m using an iPhone X and I get an error every single time that says “Sorry we were not able to confidently identify any bird species” with an option to view “wild guess.” The wild guess is always a Western Tanager. My husband has a Google Pixel and records at the same time and he receives instant results of a completely different bird, not a Western Tanager. No wild guess. What’s up with that?

This used to be awesome, now it says it can't identify anything. I recorded a very clear and isolated red tailed hawk call and it keeps saying it can't identify any bird. What happened?

  • Amazing! And a few feature suggestions... Jun 8, 2021

    By ravensaraha
This is an absolute game changer! I’ve been able to look for birds I had no idea about after being clued in by their song. I’m in birding heaven. Thank you to the researchers & developers of this app! That said, I do have a few feature requests/suggestions, in case they help: • It would be more efficient if the ‘record’ and ‘pause’ button were one and the same. As it is, I keep finding myself attempting to re-press the recording button to pause. One-button functionality is more common these days (see the iPhone voice memo app, for example), and is much easier when in the field. • When multiple bird results are given, I don’t see an option to submit feedback. This would be a nice addition, given how often multiple birds are singing at once. • It would be great to be able to upload pre-recorded audio for those times we record with another app.

This app is terrific. A few small quirks, but nonetheless, i have been able to correctly identify every bird song i have fed into this app (as confirmed later by other resources). You need almost zero volume. I've been surprised at how much signal-to-noise it can tolerate. Honestly, this is one of the most useful apps i have ever downloaded. Well done!
  • Excellent recognition capabilities, lacks cloud / submission options Jun 10, 2021

    By codrinb
I find this app really great, the recognition capabilities are really impressive. One important capability I see missing and I hope will be implemented is the ability to store / sync the observations with a cloud. Even better, it would be amazing if it would have the option to submit the observation(s) to sites like iNaturalist or at least the ability to share the sound with the iNaturalist app. I hope these features are planned and will be implemented. Nonetheless, I highly recommend it!
  • Birder’s dream app! Apr 8, 2021

    By Fr345df
This is the app I have been waiting for!!!!! It lets me record and view a bird sound sonograph in real time and select a portion to submit for identification and get a quick response. It also saves the WAV file excerpts with the id so I can share and study them later. (The sound selection mechanism lets you select along the time axis only. I don’t think you can select along the frequency axis. This is the only feature I can think of that would make the app even better. )

Useful app so long as you have data service. Always keep it open and ready when out walking. Only problem is that the "Explore your area" function does not work. I get a mssg telling me that there is no GPS signal but I know that's not correct because I can see the GPS location displayed on the home screen (and other apps have it too). I have set permission to access GPS when the app is in use and I know it works because my observations are accurately recorded. Be good if this could be fixed pls

Very good app. Clever, informative. Enabled me to learn local birds and their variety of songs. It has an amazing ability to detect multiple birds, even when they are a long way away. It even manages to ignore builders and traffic noise. A bug with the Android version is that the Explore Your Area menu option says there is no location data. The phone has the option enabled and the BirdNet app has the permission allowed. This is odd because the app correctly shows the location on observations.

This app was amazing, but sadly it hardly works at all now. Even when bird song is clear there is no identification. It's a shame because we've recommended the app to countless people but now it's so disappointing. We've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it still doesn't work.
