  • Birder’s dream app! Apr 8, 2021

This is the app I have been waiting for!!!!! It lets me record and view a bird sound sonograph in real time and select a portion to submit for identification and get a quick response. It also saves the WAV file excerpts with the id so I can share and study them later. (The sound selection mechanism lets you select along the time axis only. I don’t think you can select along the frequency axis. This is the only feature I can think of that would make the app even better. )

I didn't know what to expect, thought i would have to pay to use it etc... I have never written a review before but had to for this app. It's fantastic, it is intuitive to use and not only was it correct every time I "tested" it on birds I could see, it also led to my first Whitethroat sighting. I am going to be recommending it to all my birding friends/family, it is so useful, especially as the Summer approaches and the birds get harder to see. It also works as an great educational tool.
  • Needs features May 7, 2021

I’ve been using it for a few days and it seems to work pretty well. I only gave it three stars because it needs some features added. The most important feature would be the ability to submit feedback when it offers more than one possibility, in the likely event that we can identify the bird. The second feature would be the ability to import from our own library. I found that if you are in a remote location with spotty cell coverage the app is useless because it cannot connect to their servers. At the least we should have the option to record and select the part to be analyzed and then the ability to save it to be analyzed later.

This app is absolute genius! and way too much fun. Upon launch, it immediately starts recording. The sample is presented visually so you can crop it to the exact call. Submit the observation and watch the magic as it is analyzed and the bird identified. Recordings are dated and mapped, and soon this app turns into a avian "scavenger hunt" as you quest to find and add more birds to your capture logs. In time, you won't need the app as your ears are trained to recognize many birds in your area
  • Awesome birdsong identification app Feb 26, 2021

I rarely go birding in the country. I’m a city-dweller. A couple weeks ago I headed out to the Virginia countryside in search of a Rough-legged Hawk. No luck with that, but I did hear a bird song that I did not recognize. This app identified it as a Grasshopper Sparrow, which eBird identified as either rare or uncommon for this time of year. So I was skeptical. But sure enough, upon reviewing my photos from the morning there was indeed a Grasshopper Sparrow. I am very impressed.

Great App So Far The only request I have is that an example of bird sound is provided when a species of bird is identified by the app, as often there are multiple bird songs in one area and it would be nice to learn which song belongs to which species. I feel this would be especially useful for a novice who is keen to learn, such as myself.
  • Great App for birder of 60 plus years! Apr 30, 2021

BirdNet hears birds I no longer can. I can then search for the birds it “hears”. All new exciting way to experience my life long hobby. Thank you. I have added my MKE 600 Sennheiser mic and headphones to my iPhone XR. Is there a way to monitor what my mic is recording while it is recording using BirdNET? Love to have that capability.
  • One of the best apps on my phone Apr 3, 2021

This app is simple, yet elegant. I have not only learned more about the bird calls and songs I hear every day, but I’ve found myself appreciating them and noticing them more, even when I’m not using the app. It’s simplicity and accuracy are amazing

It's a good start but needs work. When you open the app it immediately starts recording. Sometimes when you think you're playing back what you just recorded it actually is recording again. An option to move forward in the graph is missing and would help a great deal when trying to select a clip. I look forward to future improvements!

I’ve tried numerous bird song identifying apps, but have now deleted them because this app is by far superior. It’s very easy to use and it really narrows down your selections to actual legit possibilities. Awesome app!

I'm so happy I've discovered this app! It does exactly what it says it will do - identity bird species by their sounds!! It is so easy to use. I have recommended it everyone, especially friends with young children. They have fun whilst learning..... Just as it should be! Only negative is that it is highly dependent upon Internet access, which can be non existant in remote forests etc....but that is only a fraction of the times I use it. Well done to the creators 🎉.
  • Thank you - amazing! Apr 18, 2021

Wow! What a joy this app is. It actually displays the pitches for the bird song tones, and I was able to quickly and easily identify the song of a beautiful new bird in my area. Thank you, Cornell!

I absolutely love it! Thank you so much for providing such a fascinating and fun technology and for free! Never in my life would have predicted or imagined something like this could possibly exist and so it really is enchanting to interact with to get to know better the lovely sounds around me and who they are originating from! It helps connect to nature and our beautiful planet that much more and is a perfect use of technology in my opinions to help inspire us to conserve & preserve what we can

Great app but disappointed it won’t run on iOS 12. I have found a few birds it can’t identify. Mostly does really well.

I love this app! I only gave it 4 stars because there are a few things they could do to make it more user friendly; like being able to go back to listen to you're recording, or even better, being able to mark a spot while recording, so you can go back to it after you're done recording. As it is now, you have to stop your recording to analyze a section, and when a lot of birds are singing/calling, it often leads to missing some birds.

It has incredibly good interface, I liked it, but after some time I've noticed that it doesn't analyse songs properly. It was able to identify couple of easiest species, but with a lot of different samples it yields same (wrong) results. It always suggests me some quite rare forest species, but I always record in the city and samples comes from common in-town species. Hope it will be fixed, because app itself is great, really approaching and user-friendly.

Love the app for North American birds. However I do wish that the GPS coordinates of the observation were visible. This is because I'm doing bird surveys for sites on the Great Texas Wildlife Trail on behalf of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and they want the observations in INaturalist.

Cool app. It would be neat if one could go to their observation page and edit or suggest the proper bird. I recorded a red winged blackbird and it suggested a Baltimore oriole and then a chipping sparrow. Thanks
