The price for this app is appropriate although I still have to keep some ASL free apps on my iPod because there aren't that many simple words. I think there should be an update for more words and have an option to somehow slow the video down some words are just too fast. There should also be a favorites list, at least it would make my life easier.

  • The closest thing to a "Sign-to-English" dictionary! Dec 6, 2014

    By SilverHairM
This is my favorite sign lanuage app for many reasons, but the main reason I keep coming back to it, is it's one unique feature - it shows similar signs. Why is this so awesome? How many times have you seen a sign you don't know - but unlike a written language - there is no way to look the definition of a sign up! Instead, you have to keep bothering your poor friends to death for definitions all the time. lol So when I see a sign I don't know, now I can think of a sign that looks similar, look up that sign, and then drill down to the "similar" signs. Bam! I have found the definitions to so many signs this way! Just a bit ago, I was able to find the the sign for "appoint", by looking up a similar sign "find", which looks a bit like it. My recommendation to the Developers: Keep developing this part of your app, because there is nothing else out there like it! But it is still in the infancy faze. Mnay similarities still need to be added. For instance, under the sign for goal, you could put the similar sign "stars", and visa-versa. If you fully develop the similar sign feature, you will have created the closest thing to a Sign-to-English dictionary ever made possible.

This app has been incredibly helpful for studying ASL. It may not have as many definitions as a few other apps, but I still use it the most because of its great features and interface. It provides similar definitions, you can slow down and/or loop videos, there are example sentences, grammar help, and more. By far my favorite feature is that in the options you can download all the videos (under 200mb) for offline use without an Wifi/cell connection. So you can study on a plane ride, while camping, or if you have an iPod touch and you're not near wifi.

Over the years this application has gotten worse. The fact that I actually paid for it yet Half the time it doesn’t work. I’ll load the app look up one version of the word and it says “it can’t connect to the Internet” Then I click on another version of the word and it shows the sign for it? People are paying for this application yet the developer has done little to nothing to fix the network and Internet issues it has.

Ever since I updated my phone to iOS 14, this app no longer works for me. There is no video to match the words. This is the case for all the words I click on in this app..... Please fix this! This was one of my favorite/most helpful apps I have on my phone and I can’t even use it anymore! :(

Old signs and East Coast signs, so if you live west of the Mississippi these will only be good reference for communication or terping for older folks from the Eastern U.S.

  • Best ASL app! Nov 24, 2017

    By Sign language for life
This is one of the best ASL apps I've ever purchased! I refer to this app more than any other ASL app I have on my phone or iPad. I've rely on this app to give me the accurate ASL sign for words I'm trying to learn. Also, it provides written English sentences translated in ASL with choices to see English, ASL or both at the same time. You can view videos at normal speed or slower. There's information on ASL grammar to you understand the proper word or when signing in ASL. This is the app for anyone who is serious about learning ASL! Love this app!!! 👍🏽👍🏽

This app has been incredibly useful. It demonstrates many signs that the alternatives do not and many of the signs are more common than those shown in other apps, at least among my group of friends. I also love the grammar guide. That said, it currently has a connectivity issue which can be very annoying. The user sometimes needs to press "Retry" several times before a video loads.

Reliable source of ASL signs. I've been waiting a long time for this app to come to Android. The only downsides are that it needs an internet connection and it's not as comprehensive as I would like. It's still great though.

Very helpful and handy, but the video quality isn't all that clear and the app is kind of laggy. I wish it had a text description of the sign for use in areas with slow/limited internet access. It's also missing quite a few words but it has the main ones you would need

This app has the potential to be great and I would change my rating if some changes were made. The app sometimes accesses the wrong video for what you have selected. Normal speed and Slow speed are almost identical. Slow speed should slow down to like .5x the normal speed. Finally there are spots you get stuck in and the only way out is to close the app. Like if you look at the grammar section and select any link, you can’t go back afterwards, you have to close the app from the app switcher and try again.

But needs more features like slow motion. Most of the videos are almost to fast to see the full sign. I like that it gives similiar words to the one you looked up. But needs more polish. Some signers look grumpy, facial expressions do not really match the sign they are showing.

This app worked great until recently iOS updates. Now I get an error message when I try to view a video. Sometimes if I keep hitting retry it will finally work. Also, I can't find a place to inform the developers of this problem. Hope it is fixed soon.

    By WeisbergFamDesktop
Hardly any signs relevant to children. Hardly animals, things from world around you, “park”, “leaf”, etc. hard to remember now but only about 50% of words I look up or less are in here. And I’m just beginning asl with my child.

You can't slow down the video and there are no explanations of how/why to move your hands. You just have to see every inflection the signing person is using and video isn't all that clear. I would give it 0 stars. I want my money back.
