Control how, when and where your card is used. Set up and manage your Ally Bank debit card preferences right from your phone.
Our Card Control app lets you take control of your Ally Bank debit card – so you can define when, where and how your card is used. Once it’s downloaded, you’ll be able to track specific transactions, customize your settings, manage notification preferences and so much more.
Features
Card on/off setting: If you turn the card off, we won’t allow purchases or withdrawals until you turn the card back “on”.
Establish spending limits and merchant categories: You can allow transactions up to a certain amount to track spending and prevent fraud. Transactions can also be controlled and monitored for specific merchant categories like gas stations, department stores, restaurants, entertainment, travel and supermarkets.
Location-based controls: Using your phone’s GPS, the My Location feature can limit transactions to merchants located within a certain range of your phone’s location. You can also restrict purchases made in a specific region and deny international transactions.
Transaction push notifications: We’ll send a notification whenever you make a purchase or your card was declined, and you’ll have plenty of custom options to choose from. We also send the notifications in real time, so you’ll always know exactly when the activity took place.

Features

Not really sure what the fuss is about
Jun 29, 2018 By ZionlucretiaSure it’s a separate app but you simply login to the main app then click one button and click on the cards controls and your there. Pretty easy... you only have to login once it’s not a big deal and really it makes sense so you don’t have to have multiple logins for one thing. Besides that I think this is a amazing thing, to have control over your card. There are so many options and it even can track your location so that your card can only be used where you are! Great solution to prevent people from stealing your card info. more -

I finally got it to work; instead of send alerts for "All Transactions" choose "Selected Transactions." I then selected "Transaction Types," enabled transaction alerts and made sure all types are selected. Now I get notifications anytime there's activity on my card just like I used to. This part of the app needs work. more -

I love being able to turn off the card when I’m not using it. This gives me a peace of mind since I’ve waken up to overnight fraudulent charges on a card before. One thing that could use some improvement is the On/Off button. One time I thought my card was “On” and a charge got declined. Wish it could be a radio button for “Card On” and “Card off.” more -

Yes, there are a few steps to get to the card controls (logging into the banking app first and switching, etc.), which I wish would be improved, but for me, the minor inconvenience is well worth it. more -

I've caught so many unauthorized purchases and luckily with card control the purchases are block every time. Theft has gone up since covid lock down and I'm so grateful for this app saving me from loosing any money. more -

Read about it in a press release . Had a tough time finding it in the app. Finally found it under settings. A consumer friendly feature should be front and center, not make it hard to find. Understandable, certainly. The issue I have is you login to ally, then have to select other functions, then launch card control, and manually find the item the notification was for. Why not simply launch ally, to verify security, then immediately after logging in take me right to that specific charge. Another issue: It notifies me of my card use, but not my fiance's whom I share the account with. Perhaps all transactions using cards, or an option to notify for any transactions on the account would be helpful. Then finally, once you view the charge, all you can do is put notes on it. Why not add the ability to dispute a charge right into the app? I have had it happen where something billed me and they weren't supposed to, but I was so busy I just let it happen because there wasn't an immediate way to dispute it. more

Ally is a great bank...
Dec 11, 2018 By C15425However this app does not work. It’s kinda wonky that you have to even download a separate app for these features, but it’s no big deal. The problem is that the app doesn’t work. I opened an account with ally in September, and I downloaded this app then. I could not add my card to it, so I called customer service, which is always very helpful. The woman basically said because I can’t remember verbatim, “yeah we are aware of that issue but there is nothing we can do. I’m sorry about that.” That was in September. It’s now almost Christmas and the app still doesn’t work, I’m still getting the same answer from customer service. “Software engineering is working on it.” Ally is a fantastic bank to work with, however despite all of their good traits, you cannot lock and unlock your debit card or report it stolen in the app, as you can with every other bank I work with. I think they should either fix it, or give up on the app altogether, because I don’t even know how long it didn’t work before I tried it, but it’s been at least 3 months. If your engineering team can’t get it working in that time frame, then maybe the project needs scrapped, because this just looks bad. more -

This has happened numerous times. I've spent hours on the phone with support. This became a huge issue when traveling. I moved my money to another bank. more -
Outdated and pointless standalone
Feb 12, 2019 By Noel F.As a recent new Ally customer I really enjoy using their mobile app, it allows you to get at all your accounts immediately and make changes to everything right on your phone. When you go to your profile and tap card controls though it seems like you'd just be opening a menu but instead you're forced to download another app just to take advantage of additional security and convenience features. The kinds of things this app offers could easily be rolled into the main Ally financial application and keep your data in one spot, safe and sound. To top it off, this app hasn't been updated in a while, otherwise it would support the screen resolutions of the iPhone X/Xs/Xr/XsM among other new phones that have been released in the last few years. It's clear that this product serves some other use to Ally besides offering g the features it does, otherwise they would roll the functionality of this app into the main application. Also a bit scary that this app has fallen out of date, especially as one that's primary use is for added security. more -

Do you know how many user names and passwords I already have, you think I need more to do something as simple as control my debit card I rarely use? Discover has this feature integrated. Chase has this feature integrated. Capital one has this feature integrated. Bank of America, perhaps the worst company in the United States, has this feature integrated into their app, and yet here comes Ally with the worlds worst solution by making a simple feature an entirely separate app! It's almost like none of Ally's executives have smartphones themselves. That's how bad this is. Only someone who physically does not own a smartphone could dream up a solution this absurd. more -
Don’t Download, Doesn’t Work
Feb 14, 2020 By biabeaSuper frustrated with this app! Initially, I was able to log in and change my settings to be secure. Turns out I made it too secure because I can’t even use my card to get my nails done. Declined! So I tried to log into the app and it put me in a loop saying I need to log into the Ally Banking app first. I did, but this app doesn’t recognize that I’m logged into the other app. So I sign into this app using my regular password and it gives me an error (not “wrong password”, but an error with instructions to call). I’ve basically locked myself out with this app and now it won’t let me get into the app to fix it. I have to call or figure it out online, a desktop because no option on mobile site. Very inconvenient! more -

Not sure if ally has given up trying to make it work or what. Honestly, I love banking with ally, but this is a really bad look for an online banking company. Also, why should I have to download a separate app just to monitor transactions? Seems like in 2021 they could make this work. Invest some money in an app developer and get this going again ally. more -
Horrible Login Experience
May 27, 2017 By Carlette123It's ridiculous that developers designed an app with such an awful login flow. I'm guessing Ally doesn't have an good UX designers on their app team! You have to go to the main banking app, go into settings and then click on card controls so that you can get redirected to this app. I only downloaded it because my husbands card got compromised and I needed to turn mine off asap. It did its job, but not without confusion and frustration. Please get rid of this app and integrate card controls into the main banking app. more -

HONEST REVIEW - Ignore the low stars.

The only reason people are giving low stars is because Ally makes you have 2 apps. That’s the very bottom of my concerns, I don’t care that I have to go to a second app. Phones contain apps, we use them. Love it. Highly recommend if you have an Ally card. more -

Useful app
Dec 9, 2018 By SpaceRobot99App works fine but is awkward to use. First it’s not optimized for the newer iPhones without home button, so you get black bars at top and bottom. Second when you open the app you click a button that opens the main Ally app, and you then have to open Card Controls from inside the Ally app which then in turn launches Card Controls. They should just incorporate these features into the main app or allow this app to truly work independently. more -
Controls Card like it’s supposed to!

Dec 2, 2018 By A Google userFirst, this should be a part of the main Ally banking app. There's no reason to have a separate app for this. Second, every time I click on Card Controls from within the Ally app I always have to do it twice. The first time pops up a message saying card controls should be accessed through Ally bank even though I am. The second click properly starts it. Third, since there's no way on the website to lock your card then we need this put into the main app so it always functions. I always keep my cards locked until needed. The chip cards aren't any more secure than non chip cards. more -

Even if you get a notification that something needs to be done in card controls, it tells at you when you click on it saying it needs to be launched through the Ally mobile app. My guess is that it is to make it so they don't need to add the same security into the card control app. If that is the case it's a lazy solution. more

Alerts? Well intentioned, but ways to go. Learn from USAA

There are many members in our account, thus many cards. I can only control mine. What about everyone else? Learn from USAA BANKING notification, they are the role model for ask other banking notifications. I would like to enjoy the same alerts add my friend's. I WANT WHAT THEY HAVE! more

Bank of America, perhaps the worst company in the United States, has this feature integrated into their app, and yet here comes Ally with the worlds worst solution by making a simple feature an entirely separate app! It's almost like none of Ally's executives have smartphones themselves. That's how bad this is. Only someone who physically does not own a smartphone could dream up a solution this absurd. more -
Don’t Download, Doesn’t Work
Feb 14, 2020 By biabeaSuper frustrated with this app! Initially, I was able to log in and change my settings to be secure. Turns out I made it too secure because I can’t even use my card to get my nails done. Declined! So I tried to log into the app and it put me in a loop saying I need to log into the Ally Banking app first. I did, but this app doesn’t recognize that I’m logged into the other app. So I sign into this app using my regular password and it gives me an error (not “wrong password”, but an error with instructions to call). I’ve basically locked myself out with this app and now it won’t let me get into the app to fix it. I have to call or figure it out online, a desktop because no option on mobile site. Very inconvenient! more -
Apr 26, 2021 By Corey PattersonWorked great for years. Helped me avoid fraudulent charges on my account. Now it doesn't work at all, and hasn't for nearly a year. Not sure if ally has given up trying to make it work or what. Honestly, I love banking with ally, but this is a really bad look for an online banking company. Also, why should I have to download a separate app just to monitor transactions? Seems like in 2021 they could make this work. Invest some money in an app developer and get this going again ally. more -
Needs instructions & retina compatibility
Mar 24, 2017 By CatnippI downloaded this app, opened it, and was presented with a screen saying I had to open the banking app first. I clicked the button to do that and then...........? There was nothing about card controls on screen, and I had no idea what to do next. Went back to the card control app and all I saw was the same screen telling me to open the other app first. It wasn't until I came here and saw someone else mention that they found the card control link in settings that I figured it out. This needs to be made way more obvious is you want people to use it. It also needs retina support, there's no excuse for a brand new app to look blurry on newer iOS devices. more -
No way to remove old card
Jan 11, 2019 By nthpeteMy debit card was recently cloned and so I had my old card deactivated, cut it up and threw it away. I waited a week after getting my new card to reinstall the Card Controls app and it still shows the old one in there. No way to remove it and no way to add a new one. Good plan, guys. UPDATE: it’s now been over a month and this app still has my old card showing after deleting the app and reinstalling it several times. Guess I now have to take time out of my day to call Ally on the phone and complain. I love having to do this instead of enjoying free time. Why isn’t there a simple “remove old cord/add new card” option?!? more -

What’s Groovy
Love the bank and love the app. It's not another prepaid account like most banking apps. It's a legit bank. and honestly it's far better then the well known Bank branches I've used in the past. I love the card control app as well as the mobile app. Great features. But most importantly when I've had to contact customer service I was treated like I had a hundred thousand $ in their Bank. When in fact I was down to 20 bucks. They have the best customer service I've experience. A-1 !!!

What’s Subpar
Even if the performance is not that bad, it still feels more secure having everything in one app, versus having a financial institution that is relatively well-known, split their apps to dictate the number one thing that people stress over... their finances. Even if it’s minimal, I think that the majority of users would like a one sign in experience. Personally, I don’t like the fact that there’s two apps, I don’t like the time out factor when switching between the two, just in case I go to investigate something, I have to re-log back in to the other app. Not to mention that depending on which model of phone you have, the app can be reclaimed for resource allocation.
