  • Lack of customer engagement Jul 24, 2019

By why make this so hard?
For 50 years our small town of 30,000, Los Altos CA, has had one and sometimes two Safeway stores. Several years ago the main store was razed and a new two story store was built. It is a very nice store and a great improvement. The one place it falls down in customer engagement. During the 40 some days of the old building the managers and checkers - really all the employees - were friendly, helpful and established relationships with the customers. If you could not find an item the order person would put in a request. They were beyond helpful and when managers moved on to larger stores we were sorry to see them leave. Today the employees seem disinterested. They say hello and did you find what you want but that is the end of the exchange. They tend to be both dis is dive and unfriendly. The managers are helpful if you ask but they change more often. I asked to talk to customer service one Friday evening and was told to come back the next day. In a town where there are 5 other super markets as well as two produce markets shoppers have other choices. I do not see my friends at Safeway very often as I used to. In fact, at the old store I could ask a clerk if they had seen my sister that day and find out where she was. I am devoted to the Safeway brand but I don’t enjoy my visit as I used to.

  • App isn’t working Apr 19, 2019

    By Philipm717
I would give the app 5 stars but it hasn’t been working for over a week. When it was working, right before it started crashing every time I’d try and open it, I had multiple experiences where the deals I’d loaded didn’t take affect when I was checking out. It was really embarrassing having to tell the cashier that I didn’t have enough money for the purchase because a handful of the coupons weren’t working. Not only did I have to put things back because of the app malfunction, I was also completely embarrassed. Now, an app that I used to love, has me terrified of using it. How am I supposed to know whether or not it’s going to decide to work this time or crash? My family and I have been shopping at Safeway for over 25 years. I’m really disappointed in the inconsistency of this app, and the awkward situations I’ve been put in because of it. I spend easily $10,000 a year here on groceries, and sadly I’m probably going to take up shopping somewhere else such as Raleys instead.

I love a lot about this app and it’s so helpful and I’m so grateful they’ve made this. I use apps for other grocery stores too. So with that in mind, there are a few features I’d love to add to truly make this app a 5 star app. First off I think I should be able to look up items in the store easily using a search function in the app. I do like like how the app seems to change function a bit when I enter a Safeway or Vons store. Also when you scan a product there should be similar product recommendations that pop up as well, even companion products. Buying hot dogs? Suggest to me that I might need mustard and buns and what aisle in my store I can find those in. That’s extremely helpful. Also include the ability to add to my shopping list from the suggested items. Also club cards are connected to phone numbers. Usually a cell. Ask me permission to send text messages and offer me a dollar off coupon for signing up for texts. When I’m in the app creating my list send me a text message asking if I’d like to have those items delivered for free. That would be amazing. These are functions that would be helpful and also beneficial to both the customer and the store because it will retain better that customers business. Why go somewhere else when I have all my needs met in one place? It would be brilliant.

This app has a long way to go before I give it 2 stars or more. When I select something in the weekly ad it should show up on my list by category with my Just for U items I selected. If I select Aisle in the sort, everything I selected in the weekly ad and Just for U should all be listed. I shouldn’t just see the Just for U items and then have to select Added items and have to backtrack through the store to get my weekly ad items. I don’t have time for that. Also, I had to go back to the Weekly Ad to find the information on the weekly ad items...size, count and price. I also had to go back and forth to the Digital Coupons to get the information for the coupons I selected because the information was not in the My List. All of this is digitally done and all the information should be automatically downloaded into My List as items from the Weekly Ad and Digital Coupons are selected. Not to mention the aisle information should also be automatically be downloaded because the specific store selected already has each item listed in its system with its aisle location for their use. This should be all pulled into the app. Also, wouldn’t hurt for the total price to be shown. On the positive side, I do like the fact that I can send notification for wrong Aisle listed on a item.

Safeway / Albertsons SUPPORT PAY ATTRNTION! No one pays ANY attention to my aisle feedback - I've stopped submitting any - a complete waste of my time. Now, a newish, much worse problem has developed - stupidly moves list items to "in cart" when I have never marked them as such - must constantly go to cart to restore items back to my list - another complete waste of my time As a 46 + year, loyal customer (20 of those years as a Safeway employee), I am sick of the mess Albertsons have created

Please fix this app. If U r not going to revert to the old version, which was much better, then please fix this version. The Weekly Ad is practically useless. Additionally it is much more cumbersome to operate. There are so many more steps that we needlessly go through now. 1. Old Ad items don’t automatically drop off of My List when expired. And bcuz there’s no date on the chosen item, there’s no way to tell which Ad it’s from. 2. There’s no pricing when U chose an item from the list. If I’m referring to my list I have no way of knowing what the price is for an item selected from the Ad. 3. Items chosen from the Ad aren’t automatically put into their proper category on My List. Everything is put in an Added Items category. This is not helpful when shopping in the stores. I’m sure there were well considered reasons for making this change, but as a very long time customer and early adopter of your app, I’m telling U that this change is not worth the misery it’s brought. And I’m not overstating this. It’s misery. This has been the worst holiday season shopping in your store. I’ve missed getting so many thin bcuz I’m so use to ur app being helpful and not a hinderance, which it now has become.

Been using the app since its first arrival. I’m ready to use another store whose rewards card doesn’t expect the user to spend a half hour filling it up with coupons, while eliminating their own gas rewards with useless grocery rewards that expire. It has undergone many changes, most of them forcing the user to work quite hard to fill their rewards card with savings. Lately, it now causes unaware users to use up their gas rewards with grocery “rewards” which really are coupons you may never redeem because the item is out of stock, you weren’t aware you had to pick up the item when your family sent you and now it’s expired, or you weren’t aware that you are taking your gas rewards away with a grocery item you didn’t really want or need. First they removed the Shopping List and after many, many complaints and requests from users everywhere it took two years before they put it back in only to change your options so that you couldn’t add only items you planned on purchasing, but every item you had added as a coupon. After the developer claimed to have fixed that my family gave up using the app, though I continued. The store staff is wonderful. The app is a terrible way to force its customers to view every item individually that has a sale price to fill their card up with coupons. It doesn’t always function properly and it expects you to spend too much time working for your shopping needs.

  • New Stackables Don’t Work Sep 11, 2019

    By Fullcart
Your new system of stacking the coupons sounds good, but in the end doesn’t work. I just bought Crest toothpaste and it was $4.50 and a one-time offer price of $2.99. Then, like in the past, there was another special offer of $2 off. Therefore in the end, it should have been $.99. Not the case after I found it on my receipt at home. Changing the way to find the coupons is good, but that also needs to be reflected in the application of those coupons. If a coupon can’t be stacked with a one-time offer, then it shouldn’t be put together. A frustrating start to your new system. Plus, I’m finding today, once I add the stackables, the individual offers still appear. If I hit the add button, it should remove the other variations from my options list. Your coupons and offers are listed as options of variants of similar-branded items, but perhaps this cross-over if multiple items is the problem. It’s not pulling all the options, but I’m assuming if I go to use these, that I will only get one option of them. I like the Safeway app and love the special pricing options based on what I buy, but honestly I liked it better to find the additional coupons and choose to implement those as I wanted. I also greatly appreciate the rewards and how easy they are to use. Overall the app is good, but this new stacking option either is not fully implemented yet or just complicating things more.

  • Great except in store! Sep 5, 2019

    By Katrober319
Yes I love the Safeway AP! And I purposely don’t use apps from other grocery stores because they are simply not user friendly and drive me crazy. But, of all things, the time it is most difficult to use their AP is when I am in a Safeway store. One would think they would make an effort to make it easy to use in store, but it is quite the opposite. Yes, I often spend time prior to shopping to look through their ads and make my list, yet I still want to use the AP in store especially if I forget to look for a particular item in the process of making my list. I am very annoyed and I know others with this same issue. When annoyed, it often means deleting the AP. I haven’t yet got to that point, but it is getting closer the more I struggle to use the AP while in their store. Also, just updated my Safeway AP and noticed I can no longer look at weekly ad in categories. It merely brings pictures of various flyers and when you click on categories, it plain doesn’t work well. Whatever rather update, please make it easy like before to view weekly ads easily by category. If this isn’t fixed, I will be deleting the AP, as this update seems insane. I do see the new stack coupon feature which is ok although the bright yellow banner is annoying. I was doing well before. I would rather have the stack feature taken away then to live with this update. Please fix!

  • Crashing all day long Apr 21, 2019

    By Chico21115
The app worked well most of the time until late last night. It immediately crashes upon opening within seconds every time now. I tried all the usual work-arounds, including clearing my browser, shutting down and re-starting my iPhone 7 Plus, etc. it still almost immediately crashes. I even did today’s app update with no change to the constant crashes. I will not be shopping at Safeway or Albertson’s stores until this latest glitch is fixed. Something is seriously awry in Boise, or from wherever this app is currently managed. UPDATE: I was finally able to fix the problem by deleting the app from my iPhone, and then re-installing and signing in again afterward. If Safeway and Albertsons cannot fix the problem themselves, they should at least advise users of this awkward needed fix. I have had mostly good experiences with the app until this past week. I also want to convey my agreement with the annoyance others have expressed about our points under 100 being deleted at the end of each month. I also am often annoyed that at least half of the time my local very large Safeway store in San Jose does not even carry the so-called “free” items being listed on the app. Sometimes in those instances the checker will allow roughly equivalent substitutions.

This app is easy to use and I can keep a running list of groceries until I place my order. I get coupons that I wouldn’t have seen if I were in the store and I still get my club card savings. The Safeway people pick better produce than I do and I’m saving money because now I see the prices in the app and it’s easier to compare them side by side. What could improve: 1. the default “item preferences” are “same brand different size” which no one wants, at least I don’t. Upon picking up my first order, the Safeway manager explained that it is a hard for them to get another size in the same brand because they don’t always carry it. I got a ton of chicken that I didn’t want but didn’t realize there even were item preferences. Then I said that those are the default preferences and I didn’t actually make those choices. Then she said “ohhh that makes sense because we thought everyone was choosing this option and we couldn’t figure out why.” A different default would be good like “different brand same size” every time. Or “no substitutions”. Or let us choose the default we like most for our orders in the whole with the option to change other individual item preferences on a case by case basis. 2. It would be nice to see the item preferences when looking over my list, having them be visible without opening each one up. Just small radio buttons with the options but no drop down. Use the drop down only for comments.

When you use a one-time-only deal, the app does not delete it so it looks like the deal is still available. There are often multiple listings of the same item within the same category. Just4U will sometimes include multiple prices for the same item. It's not always clear which price you will get at the checkout. The app will sometimes promote a free item in Just4U but it's difficult to locate that item within the app. As with many apps, it feels like the coders have never used any apps even remotely like the one they wrote. And the people who decide what the app should do and how it should function never use it either. Since you are required to choose a specific store location, why can't the app tell you which aisle the product is found? (Home Depot does and I think Target does too.) At least the app should tell you which department stocks it (e.g. Deli vs somewhere else in the store).

I can never get this feature to work. I want to click coupons but it simply won’t let me. I update my apps automatically and still no luck plus I am using a iPhone 11 which is the most current available model. Also the list which I routinely use doesn’t always give me the correct price and I have to go back to customer service. Depending on who is there, I often get some negative attitude from some of the clerks and they are not very happy when I have to remind them about what their own policy is about overcharges despite it being posted right there. It’s like they want to try and shortchange you again. Sometimes they have some “funny math” and need to have it explained where I see am am being shorted. The store is conveniently located for me and I generally trust their quality but I shop the specials but they are generally higher priced than other stores.

I don’t know what they’re done with this app, however it’s nearly impossible to get it to work properly anymore. I receive “special deals“ in emails and when I try to add one of the specials to my card, the link takes me to a webpage instead of the app now. The app consistently tries to change my location; I’m in Colorado yet it will change my location to California, or Idaho. That’s something I have to check each time. Since the email links do not go to the app, I have to open the app, which isn’t any big deal, then I have to scroll through all of the different “Coupons“ in order to find the one I’m looking for. It’s such a waste of time that I rarely ever do it anymore. I have better things to do with my time then to search through hundreds of “coupons“ to find the one I’m looking for. My time is too valuable to waste it this way. If you’re going to send me coupons, at least link them easily up to the app. Otherwise, what good is having the emails sent directly to me, and why bother having the app?

I realize the programmers need to qualify their reason for a weekly paycheck. Hence this newest version of the App...what was wrong with the previous version?...I have deleted several Apps in my time for the exact reason. The replacement of the very easy to maneuver Categories with the very old fashioned style of the weekly flyer advertisements is perplexing...what part of pinching and/or expanding on an ipad, much less on a phone, seemed like an improvement? Three times now since this update launched the "stackable coupons" feature has failed me at the checkout...we all know the frustration and embarrassment of challenging the cashier/total at the time of checkout, so I needed to return to my car, go over the receipt, double-check the App, then go back into the store, go to Customer Service, wait for help and explain the discrepancies...all three times I was correct, the App was incorrect and I wasted several unnecessary minutes of my life. The worst of the changes is the My List part...items DO NOT delete when expired!?!...previously, of course, they did...if you do not stay up to date & manually delete these items they will remain on your list...this has caused agita at the checkstand. All this is for not as I have deleted the App & will now do 100% of my shopping at Trader Joes...no sales, no coupons, no App...maybe will spend a bit more but will more than make up for it in less frustration.

First, the Safeway to which I have access is absolutely horrible. They sell past due date items. The produce is rotten half the time. Bakery items are covered in bugs more often than not. Too many staff members are beyond rude, they’re down right abusive to customers. That aside, the app is horrible. It constantly sends reminders and “deals” that are mostly useless. Worse, once you start getting this spam, you can’t make it stop. No matter how many times you unsubscribe, now matter how long you wait past the period the unsubscribe page says you need to wait before changes to your email settings kick in, the spam just keeps coming, and coming, and coming. Safeway is even worse than LinkedIn with respect to getting it to stop filling your email in box after doing every possible thing to get it to stop. I know, it’s hard to imagine such thing is even possible. Unfortunately, it’s not just possible... it’s a given. Shame on you, Safeway. Shame!
